Had a great story today. Sat down with one of the directors, told him I'm concerned about my own lack of experience. Particularly the fact that I have no idea what responsible corporate software development does or should involve.

I asked him about the possibility of getting a mentor (somebody with a decade or 2's experience) to look at my current work, and advise on steps to take and processes to implement over the next 6 months or so.

Anyway, turns out that one of the other companies he owns has a problem like this. They've got an employeee who's nearing retirement, and the whole company basically runs on an accumulated ten years of undocumented code written ad-hoc by this guy.

So, my director has a guy already doing this retrospectively for another company, and he'll see if we can organise something for me (and some training too ^^ )

Very nice. I could have used a mentor on my first job.
