Guys what do I need to back up if I'm blowing the system away?

@JeffreyLin formatting your PC?

user43095
Was going to compress the home folder, anything else worth keeping?

user43095
@Jochem Yeah, once Windows 10 comes out I'll burn it to a CD, then bliw up everything so that I can have GPT.

user43095
Although I wonder if I really need more than 4 partitions.

it depends on what you have installed on your PC, some stuff might be kept in /var/ or /opt/
/var/www would hold any web stuff you might've messed with, /opt is popular for some stuff like media centers and dlna/upnp servers

The only thing I can think of would be some configs, although I don't remember which ones.

Also: what has the better compression rate? Think I've narrowed it down to .tar.gz and .7z.

I doubt there'd be much in it, honestly
7z is a bit easier to extract from I think, as tar.gz is really a two step process
tar.gz is probably better if you want to restore everything to a linux system, 7z is better if you want to use a linux/windows system to recover individual files at random times
though honestly, you can do both with both filetypes

Meh, pretty certain 7zip can do tar.gz, so I'll go with that.

it can, but it needs to ungzip first, then untar. which means you'll need the room for that

3:14 PM
@JeffreyLin *.tar.gz overall has better compression and compatibility, *.7z has decent compression and easier on windows

4:08 PM
@JeffreyLin a CD? Good luck =p
@JeffreyLin don't do .tar.gz!

A CD is 700 MB... so yeeeeah

You can't access random files in a .tar, you'd need to decompress everything before it

@KevinvanderVelden BUT I CAN DO IT!!!!!!1one

Indeed, but just because you can doesn't mean you should

WOW! AMAZING!

4:31 PM
@KevinvanderVelden so that explains why winrar couldn't show me my tar.gz compressed backups of my server

@Ieuan naah, winrar is just terrible
(But yes, I think it's literally $filename$ $attributes and size$ $data$ repeat

@KevinvanderVelden DriveDroid FTW

user43095
@KevinvanderVelden What do I do then?

@JeffreyLin .7z
Anything but tar
Unless you're writing to actual, physical tape
(Or you always want to extract the entire thing in one go)

user43095

user43095
@KevinvanderVelden Pick one

The top one

user43095
5:01 PM
46k files :O

user43095
8.4 GB

@JeffreyLin average of 182 kilobytes per file
Yes
That factor is right

3 hours later…
8:17 PM
so I'm not insane, right?

8:29 PM
Naah
I'm totally not planning on just making bees for that
Ooh also this site is a thing: beesbeesbees.com
