I moved yesterday's conversation on cs.stackexchange.com/questions/29204/… to the newly-created chatroom where I'd migrated the comment discussion as well. I think it makes more sense to have it all in one place. Please continue talking in that room if you want to join the discussion.

@Gilles Good idea, thanks

a very nice visualization of basic voting trends found on Game Development. seems all the se's could really benefit from the same graph as a critical measure of site health.

@Raphael and others: what would you think of this question on CS.SE?
Suppose I want to build an operating system based on a very small native lower kernel that acts as a managed code interpreter/runtime and a larger upper kernel compiled to a non-native machine language (Java bytecode, CIL, etc.). Examples of similar operating systems would be Singularity and Cosmos.

What pitfalls and development challenges exist writing an OS with this sort of infrastructure in contrast to a purely-native solution?
it's a bit broad, but what I want to know is whether you'd consider it off-topic

@Gilles I think offtopic, in that form. It's certainly a problem -- rather project -- that spans the gap between programming the thing and understanding concepts, but due to the broadness of the question it doesn't fit (either).There are probably some conceptual subquestions that would be fit for Computer Science. (I'm not an OS person so I can divine them.)
