8:00 PM
I'm finding gscan2pdf is not picking up my USB scanner reliably, though replugging the USB port seems to fix things. Is this something I should be concerned about? It didn't seem to happen before.

@FaheemMitha Pretty well.

@MichaelHomer How's the student thing? Graduating soon?

@FaheemMitha I graduated years ago.

@MichaelHomer Oh dear. How out of touch I am.

8:18 PM
I thought you taught or were a post-doc or some sort of Academic.

Yeah, I am

Good, so my memory isn't entirely lost yet.

8:37 PM
@FaheemMitha yes, jgg is Jason Gunthorpe

8:49 PM
@StephenKitt Ok. So he hasn't completely disappeared.

@FaheemMitha people rarely do — even Branden Robinson recently reappeared on the Debian mailing lists!
I mean over sufficiently long timescales

@StephenKitt Is Branden not active on Debian any longer? I haven't been keeping track.
I guess everyone stops eventually. I wonder who the longest active DD currently is.
Even JH quit, after all.

@FaheemMitha he’d disappeared for a long time

Do you know what Jason Gunthorpe is doing now?
@StephenKitt Oh. And he was project leader once. For shame!
@StephenKitt Do you go to the Debconfs?

@FaheemMitha when I can manage it, yes
@FaheemMitha nm.debian.org/public/people shows a few candidates ;-)

8:57 PM
@StephenKitt How are they? Busy, I expect.

@FaheemMitha next year’s DebConf will be closer than ever to you

@StephenKitt Where is that?

@FaheemMitha Taiwan

@StephenKitt Hmm, that's fairly close.

@FaheemMitha they are very cool, very friendly, as busy as you want them to be
the atmosphere is unlike any other conference I’ve ever been to

8:58 PM
@StephenKitt I don't see how a new member list helps with that question.
@StephenKitt "as busy as you want them to be"?

@FaheemMitha you can sort the list by date, it still tracks all the accounts (but only two accounts older than 2000 have their date defined)

I'd feel like an imposter at a Debconf, but maybe I should think about going.

@FaheemMitha you can do as little or as much as you want

@StephenKitt ok

@FaheemMitha if you can manage it I would highly recommend it

9:00 PM
@StephenKitt ok. Are you going?
To Taiwan, I mean.

@FaheemMitha I don’t know yet...

Ok. So, looking at the people who seem to have been around (per my recollections) they seem to date from around 2001/2003. When did you join?
Roland McGrath has a blank page.

@FaheemMitha I only became a DD in 2013
@FaheemMitha yes, accounts older than 2000 are incomplete

@StephenKitt Oh, that recently? Hmm. Was it hard?
@StephenKitt Which makes it less than useful to track the oldest active DDs.
Sam Hartman is 2000.

@FaheemMitha yes, but it limits the scope

9:03 PM
@StephenKitt True.

@FaheemMitha it took me about a month to get through the process, then three months before the paperwork was completed and my account was created
but I'd been contributing since 2001 or 2002

@StephenKitt That's very fast. But you must have been active in Debian for awhile.

and a DM since 2008 I think

@StephenKitt ok
So plenty of history then.

a fair amount :-)

9:05 PM
Yes, Ian Jackson is blank too. I guess he's been around for awhile.

yup
he rewrote dpkg in 1994

Why blank before 2000?
@StephenKitt From Perl to C? Or from shell to Perl?
I've got a vague memory that dpkg was originally shell.

@FaheemMitha that’s when the NM database was created
@FaheemMitha Perl to C

@StephenKitt They don't have records before then?
@StephenKitt Ok.

@FaheemMitha various emails etc. but nothing in the database, except where it’s been added manually (Ian Murdock and Lars Wirzenius)

9:11 PM
@StephenKitt Ok.
I just found Ian Murdock's medical report online. It makes depressing reading. Not really recommended, but it's easy to find. Though I'm surprised it's public.
Easy, as in, linked from his Wikipedia page...

9:31 PM
When do the Debconfs normally happen? My impression is August or thereabouts.
And when would the dates be formally announced?
And it's like a week, correct?

1 hour later…
10:48 PM
@FaheemMitha Nope, lasts year was in July

Hi @Braiam. Have you been to any Debconfs?

@FaheemMitha nope, only read the minutes

@Braiam Well, I don't imagine you're going to fly to Taiwan.

Hey there, I'm trying to get more acquainted with linux/server management as a web developer who usually works on a windows machine.
I'm trying to figure out what would be closer to a "on the field" experience for VPS hosting management.

Is it better to run via Virtualbox a flat Debian install, or use Vagrant and search for a debian image? What is more viable also "performance" wise? I mean would Vagrant+Vbox create more overhead than Vbox alone?

I thought Taiwan was "close" to Bombay. Apparently close is relative. Google tells me it's like 3000 miles.
I guess I'd be closer if I was on the East coast.

11:07 PM
@FaheemMitha Well, right now, I'm not sure if I will be not able to.

Pricey air fares. Starting at Rs. 40k for August 1. Yikes.
Expensive for an Indian, anyway.

Supposedly, I live on a high-medium income country... yet income's about ~600 usd for jobs like mine

@Braiam That's terrible. Monthly, I assume.
But I thought you were still a student.
