This question could use some undeletes:
(Defaced and deleted by poster)

9:54 AM
@MichaelHomer Does it deserve an undelete? And it looks like the poster deleted it, anyway. And defaced how?

10:07 AM
@FaheemMitha It's a valid question that may be of use to someone.

@Kusalananda Sigh. Ok, voting to undelete. Though I think one should respect the poster's wishes.

@FaheemMitha I dunno. There are people who asks interesting questions and then deletes them as soon as they've had the answer. This is not the way this site is supposed to work. Hence the possibility to "undelete".

@Kusalananda Oh, you think he deleted it because he got an answer? That's dumb, certainly.
I didn't know that happened.

@FaheemMitha All sorts of possible explanations. Maybe he thought it would be harder than that?

Is anyone here familiar with Coccinelle?

Hello

11:58 AM
guys?
gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html do I reallt need to do this entire thing?
isn't there like a good tutorial which covers some of the most usefull things
cos currently I even duno how to add an entry to the menu

12:14 PM
If you don't understand the thing, you shouldn't be meddling with the menu in the first place.

I'd like to add an install
so I can boot the install from the disk

yes, I see, and I apologize for being so curt in my answer. But still, if you mess it up in can go very wrong indeed, so I strongly recommend spending the time to read up on it first. Following a tutorial blindly without understanding the whys and wherefores is a good way to completely mess up your systems to the point of unbootability.

>Following a tutorial blindly without understanding the whys and wherefores is a good way to -completely mess up your systems-
:Not learn anything at all
I knooow :D
Okay, I'll get to it^^
I don't have to read anything. It seems to be very structured and easy!

Good luck!

grub has it's own shell?
oh boy...

@Junaga Many boot loaders have a sort of shell. Don't confuse it with anything like bash though.

yeah, it probably has a lot less features xd

1:07 PM
@Junaga Depends on how you see it. bash has more features than my coffee machine, but it can't brew coffee.

That's a good one ^^

a bootloader is system-software, So I am asking myself where does it get saved? I mean physically?
I see a grub directory on every /boot. And the configs are in /etc right ? So are these saves just copies? does the bootloader overwrite the other copies on the other partitions when it starts?

4:24 PM
@Junaga I'm not entirely sure I know what the question is, but you may want to look up 1st and 2nd stage bootloader, and read the manuals for boot and bootup.

4:42 PM
I just meant to ask where grub gets saved
its data and configs and the software itself
because I find a grub folder in /boot/grub
on every partition
it's systemsoftware so it's data and installation isn't operating system specific.
>on every partition
I have three distros on one disk and all of them have the grub files so I just got confused x)

@FaheemMitha Did you look at the revision history?

7:38 PM
@MichaelHomer No, I didn't.
Oh, I see. "deleted because I do not wanna be help to future generations" etc. That's pretty bizarre.
There are some strange people out there in the world. And with a poor command of English too.

8:23 PM
@terdon It's him again.

Q: ssh - logic-less-ness?

MarioIf there was a tunnel between your home and a shop couldn't you simply go to to the shop grab some item and bring it back to home ? The principles (logic) of "ssh connection" seem disagree. in order to grab a file from the remote server (shop) and transport it to your local computer.. (home) ...

After a few reasonable questions...
This one is also reasonable, but he's ranting a bit like he usually does.
