i liked the flying. working 12-15 hour duty days separated sometimes by as little as 8 hours in 4 day blocks, sometimes extended to as many as 6 days starts to wear on you
When I was a low seniority captain I was living about 4 hours from my base (too close to have flights unfortunately, so I drove). 4 hour drive (usually 8 am - noon), 4 - 5 days at work, 4 hour drive home (usually 2 am - 6 am), sleep half of that day, at home the next day and back to work the day after.
and being home 36-48 hours a week on average where you are sleeping off around 16 of those hours sucks if you are trying to have an semblance of a normal life
there were schedules that did 3 or 4 one-day trips a row with a few days off between that kept you home every night but you had to be really senior to hold those lines
the lowest seniority reserve schedules only had 11 days off a month and the senior ones went up to around 17. I had some pretty decent schedules as a senior first officer
...but first officer pay sucks
for most regional carriers first officers are going to make low to mid 30k /year, maybe up to 40 if you stuck at it for 15 years. the most junior captains made mid-high 60k / year (at my company)
i was also there during the economic decline and contract negotiations, neither of which are pleasent
