Q: Keyboard Shortcuts in SE Chat

rolflThe Stack Exchange chat FAQ should be updated with some documentation on what keyboard shortcuts are available. e.g.: Typing @<startofname>-<tab> starts an autocomplete of people's names (update actually is in the FAQ).. Up-arrow to edit last chat message (update actually is in the FAQ) escape ...

@mikeserv ah

slm
you can install extensions for extra goodness

Q: Is there a shortcut for replying to chat messages?

MaxpmIs there a keyboard shortcut for replying to messages, much like the up arrow is a shortcut for editing your previous message?

I meant "not everything is a file"

9:02 PM
sockets fucked that up, back when Berkley was doing stuff in BSD
then FIFOs
and then of course there's the elephant in the room
D-Bus
pappp.net/?p=969 is an absolute, 100% must-read
2
really interesting and eye-opening.

9:24 PM
@strugee yeah - dbus is an elephant all right. but I think sockets are still files - you just can't get at them. maybe I'm wrong there - but there is some kind of kernel/file mystery there I only begin to understand.

@mikeserv no, they're not "just" files. they have their own special APIs for reading and writing and whatnot.
the Berkley Socket API.
and also, under the Linux kernel, sockets do not have to be in the filesystem namespace
sockets can either be in a separate namespace, with a special "socket tree" (e.g. named) or they can be unnamed in a third, anonymous namespace

slm
with the SE chat extension all the entries in chat now show up with a number next to them
see ss

@slm ah
fancy!

slm
typing /help shows this
you can click on those when they show up
ooo I'm using slash me
/me <msg>

@slm /me wonders how this shows up on @slm's monitor
there's like one other person here besides me who regularly uses that and just expects people to do mental expansion
I think it might be @FaheemMitha?
idk

9:32 PM
@strugee ?

slm
I see /me
patrick does /me all the time

oh, the irc /me? Several people here, including @derobert at least.

slm
hipchat offers it so it's hard to context switch

@FaheemMitha yeah

doesn't work here, but consider it an "emulation"

9:33 PM
yeah, me too

slm
take a look at this extension if you're into irc

slm
i like this extension the best
SEChatFaviconNotifier
it adds the count of msgs + mentions to the favicon in your tab
say my name

> This usage has been carried over to mail and news and apparently also Stack Exchange chat, where the reader is expected to perform the same expansion in his or her head.
@slm

slm
hang on do it again

9:36 PM
@slm

slm
that's a 1

nice!

slm
if there are more mentions or different types it's different

switch away

@slm What's that?

9:37 PM
@slm @slm
@slm

mm... like Gmail thingy

slm
shows 3
that's the extension to the browser SEChatFaviconNotifier
SS from the website
Adds unread count and @-mention notifications directly to the favicon of the chatroom page. The circle shows the number of unread messages and turns green when someone @-mentions you.
@strugee - this entire area of extensions that I use and what they do is suppose to be my topic for my blog post
With my new job I've been kinda swamped
I have ~10 extensions that I use w/in chrome that make using SE a lot nicer

@strugee that's what I meant by you can't get at them but isn't it the inode that makes the file, not the name? I mean, they do have inodes don't they?

@strugee - I't took me a while to respond because I spent the time reading the must read. You were right. I'm glad I did.

slm
9:51 PM
@Braiam thank God, that's such an annoyance

slm
Did you guys try the keyboard nav features of this extension?
SEChatModifications
Ctrl+up arrow and you can up arrow to a chat comment and then hit r to reply to it

@slm yeah, why?

slm
just that it's a huge improvement over the stupid mouse to reply

right arrow is better
meh, the whole SE can be controlled from the keyboard :P

slm
9:58 PM
what's this?

Q: Announcement: Keyboard shortcuts are now integrated into the site

balphaOriginally we had implemented keyboard shortcuts as a user script. We have now finally made the change to have them integrated into the site. When you go to the "preferences" page on your profile, you'll find a new checkbox labeled "Enable keyboard shortcuts". Click it, and from there on, everyt...

slm
how do you summon these?

use ? to get help, if you are not used to the interface

slm
yeah I have vimium installed so that's why I've never seen these 8-)
? is how to bring up that extensions help
mine doesn't show up in a nice box like yours, why?

@mikeserv I know, right?

10:06 PM
do you have other extensions that can mess up this one?

slm

@slm :/

slm
meh these seem buggy to me
many don't work for me and several take you to dead ends so I have to use the mouse to get out
the VU didn't work
several others too
+ the help page looks awful to me
A note saying use shift would've been nice too. Am I suppose to just know that the comma is not part of the shortcut?
when you're in chat they don't work
@Braiam - what browser are you in?

Iceweasel 31.0 with Greasymonkey
