It will only encourage question like "Computer broke. What is wrong?" :)

@kurtm fair enough. In this case though, it is quite clear what happened.
you're quite right though, bad call (mine) :)

I'll let it go this time :)

Gee, thanks ;)

@terdon - oh boy....

?
@slm what'd I miss?

dv plz: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/94126/should-i-use-or/… (it's almost completely wrong — and highly upvoted and accepted :()

out of votes...
@Gilles why not just edit and add the quotes? If I understand correctly, the answer would be fine as is if it were talking about "$*" and "$@"

@terdon too much stuff is wrong for me to feel comfortable editing

> $@ : Same as $*, but each parameter is a quoted string, that is, the parameters are passed on intact, without interpretation or expansion. This means, among other things, that each parameter in the argument list is seen as a separate word.

10:31 PM
here, $@ and $* need to be "$@" and "$*"
then the advice in the next bit isn't very good, and the explanation sucks

Yeah, just read the next bit about expansion.
Care to post one of your trademark comprehensive answers? I'll have more votes in an hour or so

it's on my list for tonight

@slm that was a joke, at least I took it as one

it doesn't need a lot, basically the opposite of that answer plus a little explanation

@Gilles cool, I look forward to reading it, I often get mixed up with those myself

10:33 PM
it's easy: use "$@". The others are very very rarely useful

That's what I tend to do, but I couldn't tell you why exactly
By the way, is there an IPA symbol for the French long L? As in your name? Was thinking about it the other day when discussing it
Or like belle?

@terdon it's not a “long L”. Double letters in French don't indicate a long consonant, we don't have those
the IPA symbol for the French L and the English L are the same, even though they aren't the exactly the same sound

Do you want me to downvote that?

I know, but the way they are pronounced, sounds like a long L

I guess an L at the end of a syllable might be a little longer

10:37 PM
@Gilles compare the L in legume to Gilles

@terdon same thing

Huh, not in Marseille

we should take this to the right chat room, and wait for Evpok to come along

OK, I warn you though that my written French is atrocious, I can speak it well enough but rarely if ever write it
Yes, it is not specific to L, it may be something more general in the French accent.

@Gilles DV
@terdon I was joking...
@Gilles I think I've used $* like one time, $@

Q: Is it possible to run a private mailserver?

Martin DrautzburgLast week my email provider (mout.web.de) got listed on spamcop. So I cannot send emails to recipients whose mailserver uses spamcop. An obvious solotion, which popped up in the forums, is to switch to another (paid) email provider. Since I have a local mailserver (exim) running anyways, I wonde...

don't we have a duplicate somewhere with a better answer that explains all the difficulties of running a proper mail server?

@Gilles I think so I started to look but got distracted with work. I'll look harder after dinner unless you find it first. That's why I skipped answering it.

You're not thinking about this one?

Q: Does the mail command require a mail server?

pukDoes one need to set up a mail server before being able to use the linux mail command?

@slm has posted a very nice answer there but not quite the same issue

@terdon no, that one is about sending mail
sending mail is easy, receiving mail is the difficult one

in other words, spending is easy, making profit is difficult, noted!

A: What email features/functionality are baked into a typical Linux/GNU distro?

slm Is there some type of email framework already built in? Yes. There are multiple options for most distros. You can use MTA's such as Postfix and Sendmail on most of the larger distros such as Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, etc. It really comes down to what your preference is. Do I need a...
