@m59 If you need portability, avoid echo.
For more than you ever wanted to know about why, see here:

A: Why is printf better than echo?

Stéphane ChazelasBasically, it's a portability (and reliability) issue. Initially, echo didn't accept any option and didn't expand anything. All it was doing was outputting its arguments separated by a space character and terminated by a newline character. Now, someone thought it would be nice if we could do th...

@Kusalananda (picking on you 'cause you happen to be here) why not upvote that ls question that just got you +40 rep?
3 people answered, it's perfectly clear and decent and yet only I upvoted.

@terdon Sorry, an oversight. I have now upvoted it since it is a good question.
I'm trying to do too many things at a time...

@Kusalananda Thanks :)
It just always bugs me a little when decent questions attract answers and no upvotes.

He keep rolling back the edit.

@Kusalananda leave him be now, we've both pinged a mod and I've flagged for mod attention. terdon can fix and lock the post in due time.

@muru I was trying to improve the formatting of the question when he defaced it.
Oh no, now Rui is engaging him.

I'm not getting into that comment discussion, not even to save Rui.
We're both pingable forever in that post, since we've both edited it.

Mods will clean it up

Thanks @terdon

Man. . .
And here I was, asking you to upvote and everything. :|

And I'm sorry if I made stuff worse by trying to roll back.

You didn't really, but yes, in future, when you see something like that happening, just flag and walk away.

Just flag and walk away. (I knew it.)
BTW: Was the account deleted by the user itself or a mod?

@terdon I'm just not used to that type of personality...

I wish we could squash revisions like git commits.

@Kusalananda Who is?

> "Sweden is not Swedish anymore, oh my gosh."
And they actually say stuff like that. On the air. You can't make this shit up.

@terdon It probably means "Wow, I can't believe what you're saying is actually true, which it must be because you said it and I'm hearing it, which is, after all, the definition of what truth is; a statement has been made. There is nothing denying that this statement was made, therefore it is true."

@Kusalananda I doubt it. This is FOX news we're talking about. If it's laying the blame on Muslims, they believe it.

@terdon That's kinda what I'm saying :-)
If Sweden has a problem with a particular group of people, it's the far-right crowd. The Sweden Democrats (a more or less openly fascist swedish political party) is topping the league of officials with criminal records.

Anyone in here knows how to use the Solaris automounter to mount home directories from an NFS server? I had it working a while ago, but I had to do a reinstall, and now I can't remember what I did to get it working... :-/
Current /etc/auto_home:
+auto_home
kk -fstype=nfs,soft,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nosuid omni:/exports/home/&
(not working)

@Kusalananda Sorry, I don't have access to a Solaris server at the moment so it's hard for me to check.

@JennyD Quite ok.

3:38 PM
@Kusalananda /me points to the topic... (And I don't have a Solaris server either. Nor have I for a really long time.)

@derobert If this had been the Comms room I would have been the first to point to the topic :-)
@Kusalananda Still, you might want to place a question on ServerFault or here if you don't get it solved.

3:57 PM
@derobert Sorry, this will be in a manual somewhere... it's not a good U&L question. I had it working some days ago. Just need to find the format.

@Kusalananda Half the questions of the site are in the manual somewhere, if only the OP knew which one.

AArrrgh! It was working all along!! For some weird reason I was given /exports/home/kk as my $HOME on the Solaris system, but the automounter is triggered for /home/kk. No wonder I couldn't see my files, I was in the wrong home! Now I just need to vipw to change my home directory and I'll be flying again.
Well, I would vipw if that existed on Solaris, but it doesn't, so I'll just be careful instead ;-)

@Kusalananda Oh dear. Hope that doesn't happen often. I hear the police get upset if you keep winding up in the wrong home... :-D
@Kusalananda Presume they don't have a usermod, etc. either?

Ah, they do. I'll use that instead then...

Solaris is a weird mix of very corporate looking System V stuff, ancient things like an awk which is older than nawk, and with a familiar sprinkle of GNU tools...

@terdon great post. I did switch immediately to printf :)
Even if echo were viable, it was apparent to me that printf was the simple way. Being explicit with the trailing newline is nice anyway.

@m59 Yes, it is. That particular user is extremely knowledgeable, especially when it comes to portability issues.
