Q: How to boot via grub2 rescue promt on UEFI system?

KupferdracheI installed a Ubunutu 16.04 from an USB drive onto a second USB drive. Now it is suppossed to boot for the first time. but instead of giving me the bootmenu it only booted to the rescue promt. I found my ESP slighty unexpected under hd0,gpt2 (espected hd1gpt2) Now i looked through other similar...

@Kupferdrache Please edit your question and explain exactly how you installed, where the bootloader is installed, if you have a bootloader at all, which rescue prompt you see (what does it say), why you expected the ESP to be at "hd1gpt2", what in the world "hd1gpt2" even means. It would also be nice if you could fix the various typos like /boot(/efi, boot chase, lower case I etc.
The better and clearer your question, the better your chances of getting an answer.

on my way to edit it in

Edit finished, hope it is better understandable now.

back to my question: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/293476/… Anybody a idea?

3:39 PM
@Kupferdrache What does /boot(/efi) mean?

that is the mountpoint of the ESP after linux has booted, at least I read that before.
@terdon not helpfull in my questions context?

@Kupferdrache Not with a parenthesis it isn't. Do you mean /boot/efi?
By the way, I did a major edit to your question, please check that everything is still OK.

@terdon I saw both so I used th brakes way, to name both, this may be not correct programming grammar.
@terdon here I am

Ah, right. Cool.
So, there are still things I don't understand in your question:
1. What is /boot(/efi)?

i figured to anwser it here as it is more about linux in general as about ubuntu

3:48 PM
2. Why do you mention hd0,gtp3? Wasn't it hd0, gpt2?
@Kupferdrache Sure, the question is on topic on both sites, it's completely up to you.
3. Did you create the EFI system on the USB? Are you sure? Can you boot into your normal OS and add the output of sudo parted -l /dev/sdc (change sdc to whatever your USB drive is)?

so, /boot(/efi refers to both /boot as well as /boot/efi, as mountpoint for the ESP
grubs hd0,gpt3 should be the root of the whole filesystem after boot.

@Kupferdrache Wait, that doesn't make sense already. You have two mount points?
@Kupferdrache Then why do you mention only hd0,gpt2 and hd1,gpt2 at the beginning?
The ESP should be /boot/efi and not /boot
And certainly not /boot(/efi

no, the installer only used the term use as ESP, so I don't now for sure which one will be used, a the first boot failed.

??
We need to see what the current situation is. Boot the machine, then put the USB stick in and add the output of parted -l as I asked before please.

i had it already preformated so I had the option to choose the partion it is mark as ESP if I check it with Gparted on the stick I used to install this stick that now won't boot the kernel

3:58 PM
@Kupferdrache Look, all of this will be impossible to explain unless you show the current situation. The problem is probably that the /dev/sdXY names for USB drives change depending on the current state of your system. So, you need to show us:

Unknown comand 'parted' I get, the maschin is booted

1. The output of `ls` on the USB drive.
2. The output of ls `USBDrive/boot`
3. The contents of `USBFrive/boot/grub/grub.cfg`

@Kupferdrache Was that with sudo? If yes, install parted with sudo apt-get install parted first.
@Kupferdrache Don't show me here, add them to your question.

ups, forgot to change the output of my kvm

4:12 PM
@Kupferdrache The ls and the other commands need to be run from a normal system. You need to boot your normal OS, insert the USB, and then run them on the USB's mount point. Not in the grub rescue prompt.

I edited all accasible info in, for the content of grub.cfg, I have to load the stick with the other system, I am writing from

Yes. Load your normal system and then investigate the contents of the USB you created.

zup, as expected, all entrz in grub.cfg are h2 instead of hd0 because, the boot entrz in EFI was diifferne, it is quiet long, should I edit in the question, or, should I use a pastebin_
have to change out keyboard lazout or I am sorry.
@terdon keyboard layout change, you should unterstand me now again

:)
@Kupferdrache We don't really need the entire grub.cfg, just the part that loads your system. For example, on mine, it's:
menuentry 'Arch Linux' --class arch --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $me
nuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-simple-98202b4b-af35-413a-b3ff-87c149c5061d' {
        load_video
        set gfxpayload=keep
        insmod gzio
        insmod part_gpt
        insmod fat
        set root='hd0,gpt1'
        if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
          search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,gpt1 --hint-efi=hd0,gpt1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,gpt1 9943-114D
        else
          search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 9943-114D
So, find the first menuentry.

4:36 PM
hm, having trouble to mount sdc2

@Kupferdrache Looks like you managed. So, as you can see, grub is looking at hd2,gpt3. Now, I think it might work if you just change that to hd0,gpt3, save and reboot. If the system is booting from the USB, the USB should become hd0.

yup, I think I hav to change the file in etc as well.

@Kupferdrache No!
What file in etc?

the file in etc/default/grub.cfg, at least I should check that.

5:02 PM
had to ajust the gub.cfg in the ESP as well as expected.

5:14 PM
@terdon i ajusted it to hd0,gpt3 still unknown filesystem. I suspect I have to copy some grub files from sdc3 to sdc2 manual.

@Kupferdrache I doubt it. You could try this though:

A: How can I fix/install/reinstall grub?

terdonSo, it sounds like you have not installed a boot loader (e.g. grub) on the disk. This means that although you have a valid OS on it, there is no way to boot it and so you can't use it. You need to attach the HDD to a working computer (you can use a live CD), set up a chroot environment and insta...

Change all cases of sdb to whichever /dev is your USB

ok, I have to chroot again, thangs for the link @terdon

4 hours later…
8:50 PM
ok, I copied the grub mod file to the esp, wish me luck that it was all that is needed @terdon

9:20 PM

I read a lot about grub2 but I don't know, why the grubinstallion, got so messed up, the x86_64-efi files, aer not wantet be the rescue promt, either the are in the wrong place, or, grub espects 32bit ELF format.
