To whomever who did it, Thanks, Thanks, Many thanks. Finally some peace !!!!

Well, at least until Mar 3.

what now?

@terdon, just want to say, I appreciate your decision re: mikeserv. I don't know all the details of the recent events (nor do I particularly want to) but I had myself noticed his general tendency to argue in the comments and I hope the suspension prompts him toward a reevaluation of his behavior.
@mikeserv, if/when you read this...I really do hope you can move on past the suspension, and not get stuck in a protest against it. I've found your take on shell scripting questions to be unique and clever on many occasions, and I really feel you can continue to provide great value to the community here...but at the same time, the value you provide doesn't eradicate the need for polite behavior and recognizing that others here are people also.

Discussing suspended users is, itself, against the rules, for general information.

8:38 AM
@MichaelHomer Really? Source?

@MichaelHomer @FaheemMitha's request for source seconded - I can't find any such rule in the Help Center for U/L or Meta U/L or the chat FAQ.

Or any of the fifty others in that same room, or the ones intermittently pinned in h-bar, or ....
It would be helpful if they wrote it down somewhere properly, yes.

8:55 AM
@MichaelHomer Yes - I completely agree with the principle that discussing people when they can't answer is a bad thing, but it'd be nice to have it in the FAQ. As it stands now, the closest thing I can find is the one about being courteous to other users.

If I had to guess, perhaps they think that listing out what you're not meant to do makes it sound like everything else is fine.
Covering everything with "Be Nice" lets them be as capricious as want.
I have seen the rule acted upon repeatedly regardless, so the general information stands. This room isn't as problematic as Mos Eisley, though.

@MichaelHomer Also a good point.

@MichaelHomer What does PSA mean here? And thanks for the link.

"Public Service Announcement"

@MichaelHomer Oh. Thank you.
That's certainly a chatty group of people.

9:07 AM
Indeed. The whole site is a bit of a mess, really.

1 hour later…
10:28 AM
grumble bash needs to fully support data structures...
Q: How do you you keep a bunch of things, where you have two bits of data for each thing?
A: Use an associative array, with `declare -A`

Q: What if the order of those things matters?
A: `s{#!/bin/bash}{#!/usr/bin/perl}`
Same if you want more than two bits of associated data, of course.

Hi @derobert
Guys, what opinion about those ASUS sound cards. Xonar, I think.
I have the ancient Soundblaster Live! and am thinking of the XONAR-DX.
Which supposedly works under Linux.

@derobert or you could use a language that does... This is why I use perl a lot more than bash.

There is some weird stuff in the reviews about needing a floppy cable for power. Does anyone know what that is about?
@JennyD Agreed. I don't fully understand this site's shell fetish.
Then again, a fellow yesterday thought it was "erotic", so apparently, different strokes.

@FaheemMitha Um. He clearly has never used erlang.
Or else he's just kinky.

@JennyD Do tell. What do you know about Erlang that we don't? :-)

@FaheemMitha <mean>How to use it?</mean>

12:13 PM
@JennyD Yes, mean indeed.

I just find elegant solutions a lot more interesting than clunky ones... and interesting/intelligent is far more sexy/erotic.
I like things that make me think in new ways. Bash doesn't do that for me.

Hey, nice ASCII art job on unix.stackexchange.com/q/260548/4671. Assuming he/she did it by hand.
@JennyD So, quiet Sunday? Or else, why are you hanging out here? :-)
No horsey time?

@FaheemMitha I'm heading out to the horsey in about an hour and a half - I plan on riding indoors, so I don't want to cut into his outdoors time. All the horses come in and get their afternoon meal at about 3.30, so if I get there around that time he can get to eat while I take care of his bridle and saddle, and then I can ride.

@JennyD I see. That sounds very organized.
So, have you caught up on Supergirl yet?

@FaheemMitha At this time of year the days are so short that you really have to plan your time... if I wanted to go riding out of doors I'd be there already. The sun sets at 4.17 today.
@FaheemMitha No, I just saw Childish Things yesterday. It was a good episode

12:20 PM
@JennyD Incidentally, what does riding indoors mean?

I like that Wynn never ones used the term "friendzone" or blamed Kara for wanting a different sort of relationship from him.
@FaheemMitha We have a small building with sawdust floor, about 15x25 metres, where we can ride

@JennyD Oh. Back and forth?
@JennyD He has now. :-)
Episode 11 and 12 are both quite strong, I think. Don't worry, no spoilers.
I wonder if it will get renewed. The US networks are very unpredictable.
And I am constantly having shows cancelled that I like. They often don't get to a full season.
The major exception being TBBT, for some reason. I still don't really understand why it is that popular.

@FaheemMitha Darn. Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
@FaheemMitha No, it's just big enough to turn around at a trot, or at a canter if the horse is strong enough (mine isn't yet)

@JennyD To be clear, I'm referring only to the "friendzone" word, not the other thing.

You can see the size of it here: youtube.com/watch?v=g2SzU-WoS5I
@FaheemMitha I got that

12:25 PM
I suppose riding out of doors after dark is dangerous. Though you don't have an open field or something?
@JennyD Yes, that's small.

@FaheemMitha We can ride on the roads as well, there's very little traffic out there on the small farm roads, and there are some fields that we can ride on as well as forest paths. But you can't go at any speed in the dark. If there's snow and a full moon it's different, then you can ride almost as well as during the day.

@JennyD I see.

The main problem is if you can't see if the footing is even or not, if there's a hole or something the horse can stumble and at worst break a leg.

@JennyD Yes, I gather that's something that can easily happen.

12:59 PM
@JennyD BTW, do you have difficulty with suspension of disbelief when watching stuff like that?

@FaheemMitha Like superhero movies/series? Not with the superhero stuff as such - I can accept a world where vampires and Slayers exist, or where Supergirl does, on their own terms. If my suspension of disbelief falters, it'll be because the people within that setting don't work within it, like if their reactions to the setting don't work for that character, and so on.

@JennyD I must admit part of me has difficulty watching a slip of a girl fly up into the sky and catch a plane. The Kryptonian power set doesn't so much violate the laws of physics as ignore them, so it can be a little bit hard for me.

I have more problems with the IT stuff in e.g. Criminal Minds. But I've decided that's in an AU too where Garcia is simply a technomage.

Buffy, in contrast, was rather more subdued.

I just saw the last Buffy ep a few hours ago

1:04 PM
Buffy doesn't fly, or shoot lasers out of her eyes, or... Well, you get the idea.

She does kind of break the laws of physics sometimes, though.

Actually, she isn't obviously very super-powered at all. Even though people call he ra superhero (or super heroine).
@JennyD For example?
@JennyD You mean, Chosen?

@FaheemMitha She doesn't have enough mass to do some of the fighting things she does. Strength and agility can only take you so far, you need actual mass too.

@JennyD Well, in the real world she'd be something of an improbability, that's true.
Not to mention one hell of an athlete.
But it isn't quite the same as catching a 747 in mid-air.

@FaheemMitha It's the same kind of thing, only way further down the normal side of the scale

1:07 PM
@JennyD Agreed. But therefore correspondingly much harder to ignore.

@FaheemMitha For me it's easy to ignore, I just file it away under "magic" and let it go.

Then again, Buffy is magical. Or partly so. So she gets a pass to some extent. Kryptonian powers are supposed to be "natural". Ha ha ha ha ha.
@JennyD What, the Kryptonian power set too?

@FaheemMitha Yes, from my point of view it's magic. They can call it whatever they like, but since their physics has no relation to our Earth physics, it equals magic to me.

@JennyD Fair enough.
Though it's unclear what kind of Physics that would have to be, to be indistinguishable from ours most of the time, but have the "Kryptonian exception" built in.
Oh, well, there are other exceptions too, of course.

@FaheemMitha Hence, "magic".

1:14 PM
Also very special biology. Not just eyes that can shoot laser beams, but how does a Kryptonian on earth manage to avoid destruction everywhere he or she goes? I mean, if he/she shakes hands with someone, he/she should rip the others arm clean off. Just as an example...
At one point they had Kara break a stapler accidentally, which was funny.
But that appears to be a rare nod to realism.

@FaheemMitha yeah, they had Buffy do similar things a few times, which was also funny

@JennyD I don't remember any of those, though.

@FaheemMitha she tried to help a teacher get some slides out of a slide tray and broke it... she broke a bottle just holding it and getting upset once, she lifted an entire huge metal thingy when she tried working in the building trade

@JennyD Hmm, don't remember any of those. Bummer.
I do remember her tossing a boy over her head once, because he put her hand on his bottom. Or something like that. They were in the gym, I think.

@FaheemMitha yeah, doing self defense training :-)
now I'm going to get something to eat, and then go riding. Talk to you later

1:23 PM
@JennyD Take care.

@FaheemMitha I'll do my best not to fall off :-)
have a good day and take care you too

@JennyD Thanks. Have a good ride. Regards to the horsey.

6:10 PM
@Dinir So the automute will not disable itself?

6:29 PM
I can disable it, and I did it...
@Faheem

@Dinir Did it make no difference then?

No of course. :(
let me... try to connect with that computer
I also suffer other problem as well
One is wi-fi not working. :(

@Dinir wi-fi is usually easy to fix.

I think I was confused which one is for wireless connection… confused between network device and ethernet device. @FaheemMitha

6:58 PM
;) Google ist your friend. please inform yourself about bind mounts link or bindMounts . Once you understood this, read the C code of the btrfs tools (which i did to investigate the issue). Fact 1: Bind mounts exist. Fact 2: There is no code in btrfs progrs, which deals with bind mounts. Fact 3: Try to run it btrfs and falsify any facts stated here. — Mandragor 4 hours ago
Irony doesn't carry well over the Internet. I don't understand whether he's realized that I wrote “link”.

@Dinir Your sound card issue should be fixable. Did you want to try to debug it?

debug it?
I should want to do anything to fix the issue I think... @Faheem

7:14 PM
@Dinir Ok. Try bringing your master up.
It looks like it is at below 50%.
@Gilles Feel like taking a look? unix.stackexchange.com/q/260548/4671
@Dinir Gilles is our big gun. If he doesn't know about it, it's not worth knowing about.

Whoa...
I always set it to 80% of the maximum

Also, S/PDIF is MM. Unmute that.
Auto-Mute is now disabled, right?

Can I unmute them? Arrow keys don't work on them.
yes

@Dinir Um. You should be able to, yes.
Did you try both left/right and up/down?

Yes.
LR move the cursor and UD adjust the value.
and for this MM I don't know how to control it...
GUI version? doesn't even have S/PDIF optoin.
no Space and Enter work.
What I can hear is stupidly big beep sounds anyway...

7:22 PM
@Dinir Try hitting m.

oh wow

man alsamixer

I am playing two songs for the moment, so if it work then any sound will pops up very soon.

"When a mixer control is turned off, M (mute) appears below the volume bar. When it's turned on, O in green appears instead. You can toggle the switch via m key."
Unfortunately, nobody reads the documentation.

Feel bad for myself being lazy to forget the man
the paragraph resides in line 54...

7:26 PM
So, no change, then?

kernel driver for my audio device is snd_hda_intel. Is there anything I can do with this?
yes, no changes.
I restarted vlc player and still no sound.

Ok, so everything is now unmuted?
In pavucontrol, what is your profile set to?

By the profile do you mean one in the Configuration tab?

Note, at the top, you had:

Built-in Audio - Profile: Analog Stero Duplex

7:29 PM
Item: Master [dB gain: -20.25]
I think that should be 0.

uhh...

@Dinir Yes, that one. And I think that's what I have too. One sec. That's probably fine.
I've got mine on 0.

AlsaMixer says I have dB gain of -6 on Master
sometime it's -4.5
But it wouldn't be a problem? I can make it to 0 if I set the volume to the max.

Well, try taking it to 0.

and restarted vlc player. not yet works..

7:31 PM
In output devices, what is port set to?
And what are front left and front right set to?
How are you playing the sound? Via headphones?

Output Devices
Built-in Audio Analog Stereo
Port: Speakers
Front Left and Right are both set to 100% (0dB)
and the bar above 'Advanced' wiggles indicating it is playing sounds somehow.

Hmm, that all looks fine.
Hey, what are the other options for Port?

Analog Output, Headphones (unplugged)
I can connect earbuds to test, but already found it doesn't work neither.

Are you on speakers right now, then?

Right.

7:36 PM
Try just "Analog Output".
Hi @terdon.
The sound is been sent, you're just not receiving it.

I changed it so it might applied immediately?

Which strongly suggested some local misconfiguration.

but I don't he..

@Dinir I think it should be.

I changed it and
notification message says I muted the volume
unmuted
and not yet any sound..

7:39 PM
@Dinir Hmm....
What kind of notification message?

@FaheemMitha not for sound I'm not

just a... normal one appears when you adjust volume
the... volume bar

@Gilles Ok.

not special about it

@Dinir volume bar where?

7:40 PM
hmm...

Be specific.

when you press volume up/down on keyboard
like... function key for notebooks?
and some small message box appears and it shows current volume
when you press the volume adjust button it shows you changed volume

@Dinir Oh.

yes... not a special thing. :(

Is volume at max right now?

7:42 PM
and I found, after that, headphone and speaker are set muted, on Alsamixer.

You're on "Analog Output" right now?

right

@Dinir Post an updated image.

oh... to where can I?

Here would work.

7:43 PM
hmm
I'll use dropbox to show images...

@Dinir I meant the Alsamixer thing.

I have set headphone and speaker unmuted as soon.

@Dinir Ok. Maybe a screenshot instead.
That ASCII image isn't clear.

@Dinir Is that the [All] view?

7:49 PM
Yes.

Headphone and speaker show muted.

hidden from the screen resides Auto-Mute, Internal Mic Boost <x2>
I set them unmuted now.

@Dinir You've unmuted them?

it's... what happened after changing output devices on pavucontrol
Yes.
I saw the notification message of showing master volume muted, turned on alsamixer, and discovered both headphone and speaker are muted, so I unmuted them.

@Dinir Ok.
This could really use an expert. Where is @derobert when we need him?

7:54 PM
I am worried that if I have missed a really fundamental thing so the issue goes big...
while it being unclear... I should work around with wi-fi setting.

@Dinir I think we are both missing something, but I'm out of suggestions right now.
Sound can be a real pain at times.

:,(
It feels like I really don't know anything about using computer and I feel depressed when this happens.
It's also an unexpected thing, when I use ubuntu both sound and wi-fi are not a thing I have to investigate on.
