10:00 PM
@mikeserv Where does it complain? What do these cat files look like? Dir listing?

Lemme see... It's been a little while. I guess I will look at it...
Here's ouput from the bottom of man -d man:
converted /var/cache/man/cat1/man.1.gz to /var/cache/man/cat1/man.1.gz
will try cat file /var/cache/man/cat1/man.1.gz
chdir /usr/share/man
pre-processors `t' from file
page_encoding = ISO-8859-1
source_encoding = ISO-8859-1
locale_charset = UTF-8
roff_device (locale) = utf8
roff_encoding = ISO-8859-1
output_encoding = UTF-8
less_charset = utf-8
Terminal width 193
Terminal width 193 not within cat page range [55, 80]
Using 188-character lines
formatted_encoding = UTF-8
format: 1, save_cat: 0, found: 1

10:22 PM
@mikeserv Ok, looks like these are not being saved for some reason.
So /var/cache/man/cat1 does contain files then?
Terminal width 154
Terminal width 154 not within cat page range [80, 80]
Hmm. Too wide?
I don't see why that would matter, though
Oh, maybe because the output would look wrong?

@FaheemMitha - I was trying to demonstrate what it looks like when it doesn't work.
I had my screen pretty wide. Hang on...

@mikeserv I keep mine pretty wide too.

I guess groff is super picky or something.

Those lines I posted were my output, if that wasn't clear.

Terminal width 77
Terminal width 77 within cat page range [55, 80]
Using 75-character lines
formatted_encoding = UTF-8
is_changed: a=/usr/share/man/man1/man.1.gz, b=/var/cache/man/cat1/man.1.gz (-2)
format: 1, save_cat: 1, found: 1
They were your own? I thought they were mine.
I just resized the window and ran reset to make it properly updated $COLUMNS

10:33 PM
@mikeserv So, does it save the files now?

Well, maybe not $COLUMNS - probably man goes to terminfo or whatever.
The cat file.
Oh yeah - see the save_cat thing?
It's 1 here, was 0 before,

@mikeserv Yes. So it does get saved, then?

Yeah it's there, just a sec...
shit
The only one I have in there right now is lsof for some reason. I have to check the paths in that conf again.

@mikeserv Strange. Looks like it was saving the man one. /var/cache/man/cat1/man.1.gz

I know - but it's not there. What the hell/

10:38 PM
@mikeserv Weird. Anyway, groff does seem super fussy. Or man.
This seems like a good time to say "oh, man".

@FaheemMitha - It is getting created, but it looks like lesspipe.sh eats it.
maybe not. I dunno what's going on with it. I figured it out once - it's telling me it's doing it. Maybe it just deletes it really quick...

@mikeserv Strange.

I got lsof in there somehow. Now I've gotta figure out what's going on. thanks, @FaheemMitha

@mikeserv Um, not sure why you are thanking me. But you're welcome. Man, it's raining again.
Just spent the entire day rewriting my insanely stupid code from years ago. I did get a 5-fold speedup.
