@CodeX 12th, 13th, 84th, ##th
@EthanBierlein it will clear up

@QPaysTaxes What exactly is good?

anyone mind if I change the room name? I kind of like CR Watercooler
star one or the other
The Nth Monitor
2

@Malachi Huh what are those?

CR Watercooler
2

@Malachi Hmm. Not sure.
I like the name "The Nth Monitor" though.

7:02 PM
Its always been the Nth Monitor

Vote!

But you should give in to peer pressure and change it

@CodeX This room's only been around for about a day.

@EthanBierlein Is this not the.. nvm

Eh. I really don't care. I still prefer Nth, simply because it feels more, CR to me.
Ah. Here goes.
I want to apologize to everyone affected by the recent events. This was (mostly) my fault.

7:11 PM
@EthanBierlein It was NOT your fault trust me

@CodeX It sort of was. I created this room in the first place. I instigated this whole series of events. I really didn't intend for any of this to happen.

@EthanBierlein there are a lot of people in there chatting constantly all day when they should be reviewing code or going outside and getting some fresh air and a sun tan. it is not on a single person.
nothing to do with the room

Okay. Thank you.
in the meantime...

@EthanBierlein ............... Look out your window.. there is a world out there.. :)

I need a break from chat. Maybe even Stackexchange. I'm gonna leave for a couple of hours/days. If you need me in chat for any reason, ping me. I'll try to respond. Bye.

7:29 PM
@EthanBierlein I disagree

@Vogel612 Hows things

I do hope you will stay around, and I've told you earlier that this is not your fault
2
at least not to the extent you make it to be

Its definitely not @EthanBierlein fault
@Vogel612 Hello?
(removed)

this isn't the unicorn killing room, what's going on?
oh I see

@Malachi Hey
@Malachi Latest project?

7:39 PM
working on a Legacy site, and I have to update some stuff on another site's stage environment to make sure it works with the latest update

Are you an intern or professional?

I work for the State. I have been out of school for 3 years now

Congrats, do you find the work satisfying?

sometimes.

I find coding fun so when i have to work it is satisfying but i guess sometimes things can become more like a chore
5mins in the garden with a cup of tea usually fixes that

7:43 PM
I like the coding part. it's the rest of it that becomes a chore. lol

Is it a legacy system or application or are they the same?
Ah, i see, you have to do planning and stufF?

I work on a site that has survived a transition from mainframes to Windows servers I think. so I have to deal with Data Conversion issues and interactions with the site. and I am working on maintaining the site so that it continues to function when the technologies it's hosted on change.

Oh, i see @Malachi Is there a point where the system has to be taken down to implement the new code or is it seamless?
Why not rewrite the whole lot ?

@CodeX usually seamless, unless something on the hosting server isn't set up the same as my Dev environment.
@CodeX 6months to 2 years we will rewrite it.

That makes sense, what language is that written in?

7:47 PM
well they told me 6months to a year, but it's the state we are talking about, and it's a big application that will affect a lot, including income to our part of the government
@CodeX VB sigh

Thats a weird decision
C# would be a better option and easier to upgrade?
I can't imagine it would change much

@CodeX it's over 10 years old. when we rewrite it will most likely be in C#
I hope

Its the whole windows xp thing but in coding form
I know so many huge business's that wont move to windows 7
I believe it is a lack of understanding on the management part

Monking

Monking
Are you new @Yann

8:00 PM
I think I'm new again

hmm.. maybe

I was reasonably regular, briefly

Well welcome back

:D

Ask @Vogel612 to un-ignore me

8:01 PM
Yo Vogel, Codex apologises and promises to be good
disclaimer may not have actually said that

Ive just got the android dev program for windows and its asking me to get the JDK
i should get this one right?
oracle.com/technetwork/java/…
Windows x64 180.44 MB jdk-8u45-windows-x64.exe
I have win7 64bit

I assume you're asking vogel, as I have no clue. But that looks reasonably right, based solely on the url

I was just asking in the hope someone would help
Im installing it now so we shall see

I have a severe hatred of setting up new dev environments

Im jumping in at the deep end with java / android development

8:05 PM
Yeah, that was the last one that I tried to set up, and I just can't convince anything to work

What did you use?

I think it was eclipse/android sdk

Ive got the official android dev program from google

eclipse doesn't like Windows a whole lot, I think they fight over resources.

I can't really reccomend anything, as I gave up before actually making anything

8:08 PM
I made a super simple app one time, but that was on a laptop almost 5 years ago

I always find it fun, when I start a new iteration, to check out the source code all fresh and clean, and then set up a brand new dev environment from scratch.

eclipse tends to work better on Ubuntu than Windows

Well this isnt working

Hm, I might give that a go then (on ubuntu).

Android studio cant find JDK 8

8:09 PM
My work forced me to learn and use linux, and despite my best efforts otherwise, I now like linux

But I would never use Eclipse. I'm strictly an IDEA man.

haha i just skipped that part... :/

Is that an editor or ide?

It's an IDE.
It's mostly for Java development, but I use the Scala plugin - it's a great IDE for Scala.

What do you code with Scala?

8:16 PM
@CodeX A system used to manage the archive and the archive intake and distribution services.

Is there different variants of Scala?
Looks just like PHP
But more complicated
sort of

@CodeX Yep, that's what I use.

Oh ok i understand how that workd
works*
Its just pulling info from a database and outputting in nicely formatted in HTML5

I mostly use Lift because it has outstanding Comet and AJAX support for single page web apps.

Mmmm AJAX
Comet.. hmm never heard of it gonna goole
Comet looks like XML

8:25 PM
@CodeX Comet is a technique where the browser/client hangs a read waiting for an update from the server. When the server has an update, it pushes it to the client via the hanging read. It's a way to implement push using pull. The form of the data isn't important.

Polling..

Any chance of a quick, reasonably unbiased summary of what the hell happened in the 2nd monitor?

ermph.. not really

It got too much moderator stepped in and now they are discussing its future

but the gist is: rolfl wanted to enforce the implicit rules

8:27 PM
Its a minor really, it will be resolved soon

The community didn't want that?

and upon encountering resistance went to shut down the room to make an argument

There were aspects that were unclear

I know nothing and I don't want to know anything.

@Yann well.. not in the way that rolfl enforced it...

8:28 PM
@rolfl Was right to enforce it but he should have explained it better

Fair enough. Go to the winchester and wait for all this to blow over?

@Yann Its all blown over

go to the winchester???

@Yann Haha
@Yann Just got your reference

You need to watch Shaun of the Dead @Vogel612
(If you haven't)

8:30 PM
hmm... sounds like a plan

It's one of those films that I'd recommend to 90% of people
But I'm sat in PJs, watching adventure time and talking here, so take my word for what it's worth

@Yann Have you seen worlds end?

Just in the cinema, but it's a pretty good film. I'm not sure it measures up to shaun of the dead, but it is very good
I'm so excited for friday. I stop having to pretend to be a big boy for a year
I'm on a placement year on a 4 year degree

room topic changed to The Nth Monitor: Chummy discussion between chums (and anyone else who joins) [bs] [idle-chat] [watercooler]

9:06 PM
Hi

Hilo

Hey @EthanBierlein Feeling better?

@CodeX Yah

Good :)

9:09 PM
@Malachi I went outside, like you suggested. I went for a long walk, and it cleared me up.
5

awesome!

9:36 PM
maybe I'll see about going fishing.....
TTQW

9:57 PM
@rolfl That's fine with me

Whatever happened to @Lyle'sMug? I haven't seen him around anymore.
2

@EthanBierlein He changed his name back to @Malachi

@Quill Oooooh! I see now.

Lol. Priceless.

I think we need to unpin some messages.

10:13 PM
You're right @EthanBierlein. Maybe @Malachi can do that when he gets back.

G'night all

10:42 PM
Whoof. I have the worst headache ever right now.

A: Bayesian monophyly testing from MrBayes and BEAST posterior tree samples

Ethan BierleinFirst off, read PEP8, Python's official style guide. Since you have many style violations, here's a list of many of them. You need whitespace between certain things. For example, the expression len(pair)!=2 would become len(pair) != 2, or trees_start=0 would become trees_start = 0. You need whi...

A: text justification--code challenge

Ethan BierleinWhy on Earth are you storing fullJustify as a static function in the class Solution? In fact, the class solution serves no purpose whatsoever. It can be removed. Secondly, function names and variable names should be in the style snake_case, not camelCase. Classes should be in PascalCase. The th...

I'm not here (just lurked a little bit)

okay
Oh dear, le internet has decided to go haywire again.

I'm nearly finished writing my take on these events

Hello @SirPython!

A: How much idle chatter do we tolerate in The 2nd Monitor?

QuillBefore you read ... Personally, I follow @TimPost's ideology: My 'razor' for such things (well, actually most things) "When in doubt, don't." I would even say I've deleted or stopped writing what I was going to post more times than I've actually posted. As @rolfl pointed out, I've been of...

11:35 PM
I have the iOS 8.4 update now. The new music app looks... colorful.

Thank you for that answer @Quill. :)
@Jamal Screenshot?

@Jamal They're gonna put Spotify outta business

Poor spotify. Stupid apple music.

I had a 6 month premium membership with my service provider, it ended like a week ago

Bah.
KILL APPLE

11:48 PM

@Jamal I'm excited for iOS9, but my developer license is bugging out and won't let me download it

If you have a CSV file with five million or more rows, it may be time to upgrade to a real database. — Ethan Bierlein 9 secs ago

in The 2nd Monitor, 15 secs ago, by Quill
@CaptainObvious I don't think it includes all the code

Usually when you say filter, there's something you want to filter it by
Most likely the code is not at fault for your large execution time, but rather, the size of the file, although 530 hours seems a bit excessive. — Quill 18 secs ago

Who on Earth would want to store that large of a CSV file locally for no clear purpose whatsoever?
