@Zizouz212 I updated my answer (opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/1753/…) to re-word what I meant
I didn't mean to say "it's not worth asking", what I meant to say is "if you ask, you won't achieve anything"
see the answer for what I mean

Ah, alright.
Looks good :)
Surprised it got a downvote

In my opinion once a developer doesn't accept pull requests in a timely fashion, the project is essentially dead and the best solution is to cut off all the deadwood and start over
It's a bad idea to try and resurrect the project after that point, I've seen it happen and it never works. Starting over however, can create a thriving project

The issue there is the definition of a "timely fashion"
@AbhiBeckert I completely agree there.

for example CocoaMySQL was dead, the code completely unchanged for several years... and then I made a fork (Sequel Pro) and it now has almost daily commits and tens of thousands of users

Wow

12:07 AM
I guess people need to use their own judgement for "timely fashion"
half the people who contribute to Sequel Pro today were contributors to CocoaMySQL, but the person running the project wasn't accepting their contributions
I've mostly moved on to other projects myself now, but before doing so I gave other people commit access so that's not a problem

Sounds cool. Was it a single maintainer there?

it was long before github...
but yeah, basically a single maintainer
now there are about 4 or 5 maintainers

Sounds like a question: When is it appropriate to have multiple maintainers?
You know what? I'll ask it

I think the answer is "it's always appropriate to have multiple maintainers"
the more the better... but make sure they're good people

Well of course, let's get someone who will just delete the repository xD

12:11 AM
yeah...
or just write buggy code

Yep :)
Yaar, a question with no diamond...

?what's that?

Ah, I should probably get a meta post, that's like the third time I've been asked

In my case it was pep8-naming that appeared moribund. But that was basically because the (a) the author was working on something more interesting and (b) the repo hadn't needed changing until a point release of python broke it

oh
I think it's natural for a project author to move onto something "more interesting"

12:15 AM
@kdopen Ah, pep 8 :)

I hit the bug and raised an issue, but it got nowhere. Then I discovered the code-quality mailing list which discusses all the various python analysis tools like pylint, mccabe, pep8-naming, pep8 etc.

for me, Sequel Pro already has all the features I want it to have and none of the outstanding bugs affect me... so I prefer to work on other stuff, nothing wrong with that
but other people use it differently, and have features they want or bugs they see all the time
that's why you need more than one maintainer

That's how I ended up a committer on ... let see ..

I think it's good to see people's thoughts on it. I'll give a sample project to make sure that it won't be closed as broad or opinion-based, but I'll ask it

CocoaMySQL's binary release had bugfixes that weren't part of the source code release

12:16 AM
And then... back to Freelancing :)

yep, 3 opensource repos

I've got two of them, but then the second I just got lazy and stopped -_-
I doubt anyone was going to use it, but then of course, it would likely be useful the way I planned it if you were running a small project

Ah no, I'm alo a committer on json-c
Plus I've got one python module on pypi
And, of course, I'm the committer for about 200 repositories at work
the as in the ultimate authority, though others manage them

You must have lots of fun :D

oooh I just noticed we have 970 SVN repositories at work now
have to get some champaign for the thousandth one
maybe I should stick an easter egg in the "create new project" script

12:20 AM
:)

I have a million repositories on the job :)

Yeah, 120 of mine have mirrors on Github

what do you guys do at your day job?

Chief Architect for an operating system

Well... I don't have one. You're talking to a 15 year old who still goes to school :)

12:21 AM
ziz does homework

lol
@kdopen I get homework, but I don't bother

"an operating system"?

Yep ... webOS
Previously on phones and tablets, now on smart TVs

oh awesome!

Cool. So you probably made everything on my tv :/

12:23 AM
It's not exactly a secret, my id will take you straight to linkedin and GitHub
Only if you have the latest LG ones

I don't own a TV...

Smart person
I own two, but only because I got one for free :)

I use my computer, which has a plenty big enough screen, or my laptop

Actually, case in point. My friend and I were developing a high-level API, mostly for use for junior student developers, so this will actually be a real question ;)

The boys use it for their playstation gaming

12:24 AM
@AbhiBeckert We've got a tv, but for Treehouse

my housemate has a dodgy no-name brand TV, which pisses me off - you can't disable overscan so it's impossible to get clear pixels from my laptop

The other one is only for Netflix/Amazon and DVDs
No TV service or cable/satellite
Which means complete control over what we watch - no ads, news, reality, etc

I'm Australia so TV is a bit different here

Take a look at my icon :)

where do you live? I thought you were aussie but your profile says silicone valley?

12:28 AM
Yep, I live in Santa Cruz and commute over the mountains to SV each day
But I have three passports

Three passports?
I've only got a Canadian one...

Aus, UK, US

where in Aus did you live?

Grew up in Sydney, moved to Canberra, then off to the UK and finally here. Parents moved to Tas

I've been in Cairns most of my life but am currently moving to Mackay, until the end of the year and then I'll be moving again... not exactly sure but hopefully to Maroochydore

12:30 AM
Gonna leave QLD and move into the 21st century?
Not to mention daylight saving
:)

my closest friends live in melbourne and sydney... but I don't think I will
my girlfriend works for QLD education and it's probably too much to ask her to leave that job

Nah, couldn't pay me to move back to Sydney

Melbourne would be nice though

Yep all 4 seasons in one day ... twice
Their bridge fallen down again yet?

last time I was in Melbourne it was just "winter" all night and all day

12:32 AM
... and that was in January

nah it was actually winter... but definitely not what I'm used to

and ziz has no idea about the various rivalries that I'm playing on :)

in Cairns I can sit on the esplanade wearing a t-shirt eating eat icecream at 10pm on a midwinter night...

@kdopen I'm listening... (but I'm confused)

Lots of rivalries between the states in Aus

12:34 AM
@Zizouz212 australia is a lot bigger than it looks on the map (due to dodgy projections used by most maps...) and this means the weather is extremely different depending where you are

The old saying about QLD was that in summer it was 20years and 1 hour behind the rest of the country

Ah, like Canada?

Australia is almost exactly the same size as the USA

yeah but our climate varies more than the US does I think?

Ha! USA is smaller than Canada! :P

12:35 AM
We have one sheep station (the US call would callit a Ranch) which is bigger than Texas

right but all of canada is cold

@AbhiBeckert It was 38 celsius today...

sure, but how humid?

Sorry @kd
@AbhiBeckert That's with the humidity?
Otherwise, it was 30
Which is normal for August

melbourne is one of the coldest cities in Australia, and they get 38 celsius every year in summer

12:37 AM
How cold does it get in Melbourne?

I'm from Cairns where I don't think it has ever been as hot as 38, but because of the humidity it's one of the hottest cities in the country

And my parents farm (north coast of Tassie) gets snow in winter, and 30-40 C in summer

temperature alone isn't a good indicator of the weather really

@Zizouz212 THink of it this way, the top third of Australia is in the tropics. The southern most point is far enough South that Aus can legally claim part of Antartica as its own territory

@kdopen Wowz

12:39 AM
And there's a 4 hour (not 3 like the US) time difference between the east and west coasts

I don't know... It got to about -39 last winter, and it's been to about 42 this summer :/
Great! I'll have two questions to ask today :)

yeah but your 42 degrees is colder than my 30 degrees in terms of how it actually feels to stand outside in the sun

On the other hand ... the US has a population of about 318 million vs 23 million in Australia

humidity changes everything

Oh, Toronto is really humid. Any sane Torontonian will say that

12:42 AM
Tell me about it ... Sydney was terrible for humidity
Canberra on the other hand was nice and dry
And if you can get away from the coast, California is great too. I went shooting earlier in the year in the central valley. 48C according to our thermometer

I lived inland from cairns for several years... the heat there in summer was insane
standing in the sun could literally kill you

The real nightmare though is Hong Kong. 1am, 40+C, 90% humidity

but it's too humid in cairns, the water in the air keeps it cooler

Yeah Santa Cruz is like that. You get a day or two of high temperatures, that produces a low pressure inland, and the marine layer moves in to "air condition" it

cairns ranges from 23 to 31 in summer and 17 to 25 in winter

12:46 AM
25 in winter?

We get -25 in winter!

yeah
that's what I mean, totally different climate
the real difference between summer/winter in cairns is the rain

Well you're tropical so you only really have two seasons - wet and dry

Q: Is it appropriate for me to have multiple project maintainers in this project?

Zizouz212I'm currently the sole maintainer of an API that a friend and I have written. It is currently written in Java, and is designed to make a lot of the low level interfaces high-level, to help ease the learning process of beginners learning Java. It's sole application is in my school, where other stu...

12:47 AM
we average 400mm of rain in january
and 450mm in febrary, 424mm in marge
*march
those three months are a killer
that's just the average. some years we can get ~400mm of rain in one day
and it will be stinking hot while raining, so you'll stand out in the rain sweating your shirt off

Well, I'll have to ask another license recommendation soon...

San Fran averages about 600 per year ... but with El Nino coming that will jump way up

El Nino?

Warm oceans ... more rain. Looking for it to break our drought

Whatever... I wish we get rain. I love the rain!
Anyways, was my question a good question? Ways to improve?

12:50 AM
Now, high temperatures + rain makes for a good time to walk
Currently, since it's not very active, and is only used within our school, updating and maintaining the project. However, since we are expanding it, and making it available to other schools.
That paragraph makes little or no sense. It's and 'if' without a 'then'

@Zizouz212 you wouldn't love the rain we get in cairns...

@kdopen Yep, fixed that :)
@AbhiBeckert Why?

Used to hike through rainforests in NSW in the rain. Just T-shirt, shorts, and shoes
Then remove the leeches when you get home

NSW? -_-

New South Wales

12:53 AM
Ah. Australia I guess?

Parents had a farm south of Sydney with rainforest on it
Aus is a wierd mix of climates .. as Abhi said.

I remember last year... Vancouver didn't get rain for an entire month :/

some of our rivers can flood to ~15 metres above the normal water level

In Canberra it could be 40+ degrees mid-summer. Then you'd drive an hour or so south, up towards the Snowy's and there'd still be Ice and Snow on the ground, with the temperature dropping to single digits
My droughts bigger than yours :)

Ah, opinion based vote

12:57 AM
No, there are places in Australia where it hasn't rained for 5 years

@kdopen But isn't a lot of central Australia desert?

Just need to see the filenames to know what those are about
@Zizouz212 Yes, but technically so is much of the USA

@AbhiBeckert Looks serieus.

I was just driving to my dad's house on the other side of the state (1700km drive in a straight line...) and it was perfect weather when we left home

12:58 AM
@kdopen I thought it was mostly the west/south portion of the US?

it was horrific, I was too busy driving to take photos of the worst parts

Well that's a lot of the USA

@AbhiBeckert Likely why I'm afraid to drive

And if they didn't pump water down from the mountains, a large part of California would be desert instead of farms
The north-south mountain ranges provide a 'rain shield'

I think I've watched a documentary on that

1:01 AM
hehe, we have to pump water out of the city in cairns

In Australia they're mostly on the East coast, but the prevailing winds come from that direction
So that stops the rain reaching inland.

Ah, our flag handling average is going to go up by so much...

also the whole east coast of Australia has a single long mountain range

But the US has long N-S valleys between mount ranges

they're not big mountains, but almost all of the rain doesn't get over them

1:02 AM
@AbhiBeckert which runs under the Bass Strait to form Tasmania and also under the Northern seas to form PNG etc
That's why the East coast is on the ring of fire
And why the coastal plains are largely sandstone (elevated sea beds)

I used to live 2 hours drive inland from Cairns, on the other side of the mountain. Only 0.001% of the rainfall that crosses the coast gets to the other side of the mountain

Yep and the other 99.999% fell on Sydney and Cairns ;)

sometimes it might only rain once or twice in a year

wow
Am I required to declare myself lucky?

one side of the mountain is some of the richest rainforest in the world, the other side is almost desert

1:04 AM
Now you're making me homesick

lol

I'll head off into the desert again this weekend

not total desert, because some of the rain falls at the top of the mountain and flows into rivers going inland, but all the trees ned to be able to survive a couple years of almost no water
but if you go far enough inland, where the rivers end, it really is desert

Yep, that's "The Bush" which you go through before you get to the real Outback

which is why everybody lives on the coast in Australia

1:06 AM
Yeah, what is it ... 80% of the population within 200 miles of the sea?

there are only two inland cities, one (alice springs) doesn't really classify as a city and the other is the nation's captial and was only built inland because they didn't want the nation's capital vulnerable to naval attacks

Sounds like Canada. A lot of people within 300 km of the US border :)

then ther's a couple of hundred miles of wheat
Ooh they've changed history? That's not why Canberra's where it is

really?
that's what I'd heard

But it sounds better
Nope. The Aussie government used to sit alternate years in Sydney and Melbourne. They couldn't pick one because the other cried foul, saying it gave them too much influence.
Draw a line between Syndey and Melbourne, then mark the halfway point.
Guess what's there

1:09 AM
ah ok, I got it wrong

NO, I can imagine they'd prefer the naval Attack story

as a queenslander the whole rivalry between sydney/melbourne annoys me

It was probably a consideration, but the real one was political.
Now you see where it came from though.
The first two big cities of the country

the only two big cities even today if we're honest

it's not a real rivalry, just an in joke nowadays.
Melbourne lost
Just like the Aussie/POM thing
as long as you aren't a whinger

1:11 AM
living somewhere like cairns it feels a lot like people who live in the cities have no idea the rest of the country exists
we tend to get forgotten in terms of government policy

The US is definitely like that

but we're not forgotten in terms of the government's budget

Oh, not that way though,

mines and farming in regional australia keep the country alive

The agri-corps and the bible belt have way too much influence to be forgotten by the government
It's only places like CA and NY that balance them out

1:13 AM
ok
regional Australia's population density is too low to have a serious influence on democracy, which is frustrating when there's so much money coming from the area that doesn't get spent here

But the city dwellers and the 'country folk' each think the other are a different species
I don't think it's pop density here. I think its influence. The rural areas get out and vote, and the agri-corps vote with their check books

half the people working in the mines in australia live in the city

My parents started off in Wyallah in SA. Red dust everywhere
NO sealed roads etc. typical early mining community n the 60s

there's a big scandal in the northern territory right now where shops are selling spoiled food, because fresh/safe to eat food isn't available due to shitty infrastructure investments by the government
which is just crazy, since there are trillions of dollars worth of mining assets in the area

They were heading for Melbourne on the 10 pound assisted passage. But the company that was sponsoring us just said "Changed our minds, you're getting off here. We'll ship your stuff back to you when we dock in Sydney and unload:

1:17 AM
yuck

That kind of money should translate into political influence on the part of the mining companies

sure the mining companies have plenty of influence, too much perhaps

That was back in the days of "White Australia" etc.

but their priorities are wrong

So why aren't they exerting it to improve the lot of their workers? They're not philanthropists, but if the local infrastructure breaks down they won't be able to convince people to work there

1:18 AM
also I personally think the people running the mining companies are idiots

Sounds like a lot of Canada :)

it's a joke the way they run things, and completely unsustainable

Nah, just different priorities. Also, are they actually even in the country nowadays?

they have huge amounts of money and waste it on short term unnecessary expenses

They finished stripping Mt Isa yet?

1:20 AM
which is going to hit them hard long term, as mining picks up in third world countries where the mining companies spend their money wisely
I'm not sure what's going on in Mt Isa specifically

Figured it must be a hole in the ground by now

in Mackay a lot of mine workers are earning more money than you can get as a startup programmer in silicone valley

@Zizouz212 basically a mountain full of minerals and metals that they have been digging away at for decades

and many are flown to/from work on expensive chartered flights

Like the oil rig workers in the UK

1:22 AM
@AbhiBeckert Sounds like a lot of crummy politics

anyway, gota go

yeah but it's necessary for oil rig workers
it's a waste for the mines here

@Zizouz212 Is there another kind?

There's crummy politics
And there's crummy politics :)

and then there's statistics

1:23 AM
That the crummy politicians don't like

I just think it's unsustainable, and the economy is going to crash hard when reality sets in

...or invent
Yep, been through a few of those over here
dot.com, sub-prime mortgages, etc

yeah

It's down to conflicting incentives

we mine all kinds of resources in australia but don't do anything with them
it's all shipped overseas
mostly to china

1:24 AM
What's good for the company/politician is not necessarily what's good for the country

eventually china's going to get their resources elsewhere for cheaper prices than we can offer

Yep, look at our country...

But ... Australia doesn't have a large enough population to consume the resources it produces. What else would you do with them? LEave them in the ground?
That makes Aus a target for a hostile takeover

no I think it makes sense to export the resources

It's a problem with the economics of the region

1:26 AM
but we need to be doing it at lower prices
or rather, be capable of doing it at lower prices
currently we aren't
you can get $120,000 per year cleaning toilets in a mining company right now

That;s when the companies will cut back

the companies can't cut back

and you won't be able to get a job cleaning their toilets

@AbhiBeckert Sounds like a good first job :P

because all their workers are in powerful unions

1:27 AM
Yeah they can ... seriously. Unions seem powerful, but only until the company or government is determined to break them
Watched Maggie do it when I lived in the UK

if they tried to pay minimum wage for what should be minimum wage jobs, then the unions would drive them bankrupt
the mining unions are powerful

So, does Aus still allow closed shops?

(in australia)
I'm not sure
but I think 99%+ of mine workers are in a union

(and the coal miners union used to be all powerful in the UK ... until the companies let them stay onstrike for a couple of years)

that wouldn't work here
first of all, the unions also have huge government influence

1:29 AM
Then eventually, the strike funds ran out, the workers were all broke, and they finally went back to work

here if the unions want something, they can get it passed into law

At the time, the Labor party was run by the unions -- officially -- in the UK

they don't need to have their workers put on strike, I've never heard of mine workers going on strike

It was the same in the UK. But the strike happened when the Labor party had an absolute minority in government and Maggie said "that's enough"

1:30 AM
-_- 2 close votes... debating just deleting the question now...

seriously, research the "winter of dicsontent" (I think it's called).

anyway I think the mining companies should be making long term investments to get their expenses to a more reasonable level

There were riots, beatings, etc. But the companies and government just kept saying NO and waited them out.
I agree, most companies should be forward looking

I'm not convinced companies can be forward looking

When the Labor party was voted back in after the strikes, the first thing they did was strip the unions of all their political power

1:32 AM
surely the people running them aren't idiots, they're probably smarter than me

But the people running them also know you shouldn't lend people money for a mortgage they can't afford
But the people running them get a bonus based on how much they lend out
Conflicting incentives

also if you refuse to give somebody a loan, one of your competitors will do it

In the case of mining companies etc, it's the share price, earnings per share, CEO bonuses based on it.
Turkeys don't vote for Christmas

and then they'll get a reputation for being easier to get a loan with and all the business from people who can afford to pay off the loan

Well, not if they are applying the same 'sane' standards of risk evaluation
But house prices were gong through the roof ... a company could make a huge profit by reposessing
Then prices fell, people went into negative equity, and realised they could just throw the keys through the mail box and walk away

1:35 AM
@Zizouz212 I disagree with everything congusbongus has said in his comment on your question

I do too

having a large backlog of PRs is in itself a bad thing

Stop trying to pay the mortgage at all, and tell the bank "Take it, it's yours"

@AbhiBeckert If it gets closed as opinion-based, it won't really be a help to anyone..

I'm getting extremely frustrated by questions like that one always being closed

1:37 AM
I tried to narrow it down substantially, @kdopen Any thoughts?

to me the entire point of this site is about being able to ask questions like that

YEs, I think it's why we're seeing such a low level of participation

Let me guess, two up votes are from you two?

I just hit upvote now yeah

Figured :)

1:40 AM
I think you should just leave the question there
who knows, a closed question might be re-opened in future

Well, I'll see. If it does get closed, well...

YEp that were me

if it gets closed, ask on meta how you can re-word the question so it can be re-opened

Yep, definitely will.
I'll raise my on-topic:licensing off-topic:everything-else theory as well

I've been constantly trying to broaden our scope. 5 of the eight meta questions I've asked were slanted that way. And the 'Goals' question was prompted by me
But I've just about given up on that

1:44 AM
I hear you, don't worry :)
In fact, that reminds me, is there any good puns with the word "licensing" in it?

and I've just voted 'Leave Open' on the review queue
Are there any good puns?
NOw I really gotta go

-_- Give me one!

:p
cya kdopen, good chat

Bye

@kdopen See ya :)
For the record, I need to raise a big meta post about the [licensing] tag - fixing the questions with that tag, and rethinking the [license-x] tags. I think breaking it up could help: the first tag being [licensing] must certainly not help with project management questions

8 hours later…
9:21 AM
good idea Zizzouz. I can imagine splitting things up would help a lot. I don't know if we have any questions currently that would get worse from not having licensing as one of their tags
though take some time to formulate what you're thinking, and make sure that a single meta post is a single isolated unit

Feel free to drop the post in mod chat

the license-x tags seem fine to me, but I could be convinced otherwise, and I'm not sure it's the same question
I'm more than happy to see if I can help you shape it up
well, not if it's in mod chat obviously, but otherwise

10:18 AM
kdopen and abhi Beckert, your earlier discussion reminded me of static.fjcdn.com/pictures/…
