@Izzy Strange, it's a coincidence I also tried VirtualBox and Android-x86, but apart from MacType giving me compatibility problems (disabled it), it works just fine without modifying anything in grub. I'm using Windows though...

@AndyYan I already started thinking it might be that, as most howtos I found where Windows-based. But that would be strange indeed.
Must one create a Windows VM first to install Virtualbox in that to create a VM for Android? #/
Funny. the 32bit ISOs get one step further, switching video mode (and size) – but then staying black.

"Must one create a Windows VM first to install Virtualbox in that to create a VM for Android?" - huh? No I didn't O_o
I just loaded the Ax86 img in a blank (Linux, other Linux x64) VM and it went alright

@AndyYan I just managed to install MM 32bit (install before hung on formatting the drive). Cannot boot the installed Android, though.
Had the same thing on my old installation (I just recently switched from Ubuntu 12.04 to Mint 18.1).

"Install" as in install on a drive opposed to running it in VB?
I'm having problems with my own installation at this moment too, namely distorted screens. It's not sth I 100% need though so I'll try figuring it out but will back off if I hit walls

@AndyYan Yupp.
8G virtual harddisk inside the VM.

As it's about installing Android, it should be on-topic on our site, right? Or would one argue it's rather a Linux question? But on Unix&Linux they might argue it's about Android…
