This question academia.stackexchange.com/questions/34723/… was about a conference, I made a comment that one of the users here is listed on that conference site, how can I do that @ for a person that is not within that discussion (the autocomplete doesnt show for me)

@user1938107 generally, users who have not participated in a discussion can't be notified with an @ comment. This is by design

A: How do comment @replies work?

GnomeYou can use @name syntax anywhere in your comment to reply to a specific user. This will notify that user in their global inbox. There can also be notification through email if you set it up in the preferences found in your profile page. In short: See comment replies in the Markdown help. ...

Can the questions which are not about wikipedia website, but they are about wiki type websites; be tagged by ?
For example, this question is not really about wikipedia website
it is about peer-reviewed wiki publishing (e.g., Scholarpedia)
so it is not directly about wikipedia
should it be tagged by ?

@EnthusiasticStudent Hello ES. In that particular case, I would find your proposed [wiki-websites] tag useful. I don't know if in Academia.SE you prefer to have a minimal approach to tags, but that Q briefly mentions Wikipedia, but it is aimed at other wiki sites like Scholarpedia.
A very granular, taxonomic approach would go with [wikipedia], [scholarpedia][wiki-websites], but we probably don't need that many tags. [wikipedia], [wiki-websites] would be the best, for me. If we want to be minimal [wiki-websites] is probably the way to go (I did put Wikipedia because we have that tag and not wiki-website: I still believe that other Qs do need the Wikipedia tag :-).

@EnthusiasticStudent Why not just a and make "wikipedia" a synonym of it?

3:33 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent why don't you ask the user who tagged that question with 'wikipedia' what the rationale was
Also, I agree with @EnergyNumbers. For tags that apply to only a small number of questions, having multiple tag levels (general and specific) is confusing. Tag synonyms are better
It's not a good idea to tag all those questions with 'wiki-websites'

If I'm not mistaken, I'm the one who tagged that Q with [wikipedia]. This is because I recently proposed the creation of the [wikipedia] tag: I believe that, among wikis, Wikipedia is diverse websites. It is different per scope, per scale, per features (tertiary source, no original research, neutral point of view). Several question pertain Wikipedia and not other general wikis.
That is my rationale for the creation of the tag. As per the specific question, maybe the tag should be different. IMHO, Wikipedia should stand on his own, and not be a synonym of other tags.

5:02 PM
@EnergyNumbers Good idea... what about [wiki-websites]? Is there any preference over [wikis]?
@Aubrey I agree that wikipedia is an exceptional website
but
let me give you an example, and tell you why I think the website needs more general tags and why the idea of making wikipedia tag a synonym to wikis is good
we had separate tags for facebook
but we had questions about other social websites
such as twitter, facebook, linkedin
etc.
I we wanted to have separate tags for each of those
we had to create more than 10 tags and only 5 or 6 questions were suitable for each
the website went for the [social-media] tag
we still have facebook tag, and the newer tag also covers all the questions about social websites
Energynumbers idea does not say that we have to delete your created tag wikipedia
we will still have wikipedia tag on the site
but now, that we have questions about other wiki sites on academia
we have to think about them,
we have to decide,
whether to have the wikipedia and tag irrelevant question with it
we may have a separate tag for non-wikipedia websites such as wiki-websites and we have both wikipedia and wiki-websites
or we can have a general tag like wikis and make wikipedia tag a synonym of it
I find the last choice more useful and efficient
we have similar situation for other questions about facebook, linkedin, etc.
all these websites are exceptional and perfect
but have a general tag for all of these questions which is social-media
@Aubrey But I strongly believe that having a more general tag like [wiki-websites] or [wikis] and making [wikipedia] a synonym of it is the most efficient way to organize the related questions with tags
It will cover questions related to wikipedia, as you correctly mentioned that the site lacks a tag for
also, it will cover other questions which may be about other wiki based websites

5:44 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent let me understand: if we put the wikipedia tag as a synonym of wiki, everytime I use the tag Wikipedia the system will replace it with the tag wiki?
In that case, I probably prefer the social media- facebook situation: a tag for social-media and a tag for facebook. Then, we would use one or the other (or both) depending on the specific question. But, please: I'm a noob here and I don't want to dictate taxonomies :-)

6:29 PM
@Aubrey No. If the wikipedia is the synonym of the wiki-sites
you will see the wikipedia tag on your question
but if a user clicks on the link
he will be moved to the wiki-sites or wikis tag
I think it is like this.
One of the moderators can help us more.

mmm. it seems reasonable then :-)

let me become sure, and I will let you know.
I am not sure about what will appear on the questions then, the synonym or the original tag
@Aubrey I think that
after making wikipedia a synonym to wiki-sites or wikis
the tag which will appear on the question will be wiki-sites or wikis
@Aubrey look at tag
and are synonyms to it
but only tag appears on questions
but those two keywords appear in its synonyms page

@EnthusiasticStudent isn't "websites" redundant? Wikis are websites. Even if there is a gopher wiki still out there somewhere, it's not really a contender, is it?

6:58 PM
@EnergyNumbers Yes... So wiki or wikis are the better choices... I prefer wiki though.

@EnthusiasticStudent ok, so they are remapped, there is a redirect.
I would like to hear other opinions: I expressed mine, but I don't want to be a pain in the ass for a simple tag :-)

@EnthusiasticStudent Given that the community seems to have already expressed an (opposing) opinion on your meta suggestion for a "general" wiki tag

A: Creation of a Wikipedia tag

Enthusiastic StudentDon't run, walk! I am in favour of having good and precise tags on the website. But, if you take a deeper look at the results of your search about wikipedia on this website, we only have 6 questions which are exactly about wikipedia and have wikipedia keyword in the title of the question, and we...

I suggest you bring up your new suggestion on meta, explaining your new position, before you do anything
