Hi, can somebody rise a delete vote for this question of mine? It needs only one more delete vote and because it has an answer posted to it; I can not delete it myself.

Q: How much homework or exam is normal for a teaching assistance class?

Enthusiastic StudentEverybody has his own method of teaching in the TA class. One may only go and solve problems of a book. The other may be into teaching and then solving some problems and the other may be interested in giving tests and homeworks besides to the restrict approach in assessing the students work. ...

@EnthusiasticStudent In response to your flags about obsolete comments...
when I evaluate a comment flag, I typically check whether the comment adds anything to the conversation
sometimes, even though a comment is standing on it's own (i.e., other related comments have been deleted), it still adds value and clarifies something about the question
most of the comments you flagged, even though they are in response to now-deleted comments of yours, still add clarity to the question or answer

@eykanal Thank you for your response. Can you tell me, what does a disputed flag means?

6:00 PM
I honestly don't know what the term means, I assume it means you put in a flag that a moderator didn't agree with. @ff524 @aeismail @StrongBad, can you clarify?

6:23 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent perhaps you can show an example. As far as I know, flags can be "helpful" or "declined"

6:48 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent are you the one flagging a lot of old comments? If so, please make sure to distinguish between "not constructive" and "obsolete". I'm declining a lot of "not constructive" flags (and deleting the comment anyways) because they're inappropriately flagged. The system is intelligent, using the wrong flag may cause permissions issues.

Am I under the false impression that studying 12 hours a day for higher education for a significant part of the year is a lot of studying? I'd probably burn out before the 8 hour mark on my first day.

Q: Decision and PhD. Take a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity or pursue a life dream

PALENTL;DR: Young male student soon to receive an Engineering Degree in Computer Science and who likes Mathematics unsure about the next steps to follow. Undecided whether to go for a PhD directly or do a Master studies first (if he goes for the Master, he will first have to do a thesis work anyway). ...

And the associated comment:
@Compass: there's nothing wrong with studying that much; it works for some people, at least for me. — user1997744 9 mins ago

@eykanal all the flagged comments are declined and then deleted!
Yes I am rising flags
At least don't delete them and let me understand what the difference is...
@ff524 I have risen two flags
and received the disputed flag response:
7
A: Heard of Chamber of Chartered Java Professionals International?

JeffE Heard of Chamber of Chartered Java Professionals International? No. 2. If they can [offer a degree], is it a reputable degree? No.

and I think that the second link is deleted...
@eykanal Could you help me with obsolete and not constructive flags? What is the exact difference?
I usually flag comments like these as not constructive
when the user only mentions +1 for ... or -1 for ...
when the user puts an irrelevant comment
or something like: good point! thanks! etc....
I only use obsolete when the comment is now part of the answer to the question
or the comment to which the comment is pointing does not exist
something like these...
Am I missing any point about these types of flags?

7:32 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent I would go as "too chatty" for thanks and +1 type comments. Not constructive has a negative meaning to me. Things like "did you check google".
As for obsolete, to me that is for tags where edits have been made, or a question has been closed/reopened which then make the comments unneeded.
Also be aware that with the holidays mods may handle flags less quickly. Please make sure you do not fill up the queues.

can you see the deleted comments?
@StrongBad

As for disputed. I think when a flag is declined, one option we have is "no evidence to support the flag". I think that might lead to a declined status.
@EnthusiasticStudent I am on an ipad, so cannot easily chat. I don't have time to check right now. Will look into it later.

I have risen 5 flags for this post:

Q: How should an undergrad student prepare to get into top college for PhD?

user3131378I am pursuing computer science engineering and just got into second year. I want to know what all should I do to increase my chances to achieve so. I know that some similar questions exist here but they are more oriented about SOP and recommendations. What I have different is that I have lot of ...

two of them are obsolete and are helpful
but three of them, I flagged for not constructive
and they are declined
I want to know what were these comments that were deleted
They were wrongly flagged and now they are deleted
so thenot constructive flag was wrong for them and obsolete was correct flag for them
* the not
I want to know, why they were not "not constructive" and why they were obsolete
@StrongBad sure, thanks.
Also, what about comments like: "This is great answer, thanks!"
Are these not constructive or too chaty?

@EnthusiasticStudent the disputed flag happened when you flagged a post as "not an answer." Besides for raising a moderator flag, this also causes the post to go into the "low quality post" review queue for community review
If the review gets some "delete" votes and some "looks OK" (from the community), it is marked disputed
A comment that is written to clarify the content of a post is never "not constructive."
Clarifying a post is very constructive; it's what comments are for

Q: What is a disputed flag?

BrandonIn my flagging summary under the statistics, there is 1 flag listed as "disputed". This is the first time I've ever seen a disputed flag in my summary, so I'm just curious, what is a disputed flag? How would you even dispute a flag? Is this the same as voting a flag as invalid? Also, as stated in this question:

A: Should a "thank you" comment be flagged?

Eliah KaganA "thanks" comment that doesn't provide any specific praise about the answer is usually not constructive, and almost always qualifies as "too chatty" as well. However, when the comment says something substantive, even if general (like "Great post! This explains a difficult concept in a very clear...

simple thank you comments are not constructive
@StrongBad you say thank you comments are too chatty but the above answer says it is not constructive....

8:12 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent I was referring to the declined flags on "How should an undergrad student prepare to get into top college for PhD?" with what I said about "not constructive"
all of those comments were for purposes of clarifying the post, so they were not "not constructive." They may have been obsolete
as for "Thank you" comments, as it also says in the post you link, different communities have different opinions on "Thank you" comments. Perhaps you can ask in Academia meta
Since you have some declined comment flags, you might be interested in this post:

A: A guide to moderating comments

Shog9When should I flag a comment? When it will be shown to future readers but offers them nothing of value. There are many different sorts of comments that qualify here, roughly categorized by the flagging dialogue itself: rude or offensive comments should always be flagged. What you consider ...

For example, it is not considered useful to flag comments that aren't shown by default
Similarly, there is no reason to flag comments on questions that qualify for automatic deletion by the system (per meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5221/…)
Also, comments having to do with closing/reopening only become obsolete if the question is edited so they are no longer relevant. If the issue that is being discussed still exists, it's not obsolete.
And, a comment that is meant purely to alert someone about an edit to a post might be "too chatty" after a long time, or after the person it's addressing writes a response indicating that they've seen it. But a recent comment like that still serves a purpose
because the person it's addressed to may not have seen ityet

@ff524 what do you mean, flag comments which are not shown by default?

At most 5 comments on a post are shown by default (to see the rest, you have to click "show N more comments"

@EnthusiasticStudent: When a page first loads, by default only the five or so highest-rated comments are shown, along with a link "Show X more comments."

if it's not one of the 5 comments shown by default, unless it's actively harmful (e.g. offensive) it's not necessary or helpful to flag it

@ff524: Sorry. Didn't mean to step on toes.

8:27 PM
@aeismail thanks :)

no problem :)

@EnthusiasticStudent: As for your comment about "Thanks!"-type comments, I would suggest the following: go with the "lowest priority" flag.

@aeismail what does it mean?

"Too chatty" is less negative than "obsolete" or "not constructive."
It has minimal influence on other users.

aha...
got it

8:29 PM
So I'd prefer that over "not constructive" if it's something harmless.

I don't usually find it necessary to delete "Thank you" comments unless they are distracting (e.g. interrupt an on-topic comment thread)
one "thank you" on a post is not really harmful to anyone

will it be OK?

What is "it"?
Leaving a comment thanking someone unflagged? Yes, that's fine.

I am thinking about asking a question on academia's meta
about exact policies on flagging comments
I think that
it would helpful to other users too...

That's fine—but there's no such thing as an "exact" policy on a community site.

8:34 PM
@aeismail sorry my internet was disconnected at that moment...

OK.
But like I said, you're going to get suggestions and guidelines, not a strict or "exact" policy.

I understand... But I think such guidelines will be helpful to other users too...

Big, broad questions like "What are the guidelines for flagging comments" are not usually so helpful
you probably won't get anything new that hasn't already been re-hashed before

At least they may use flags more wisely...

If you ask a very specific, focused question, like "Should I flag 'thank you' comments?" you are much more likely to get a useful answer

8:38 PM
OK :)
@ff524 @aeismail @eykanal @StrongBad you helped me indeed. thanks...
@ff524 thanks for the links to questions on Meta. It was great.
@ff524 why my flag to the thanks comment on the answer is declined?
@Piotr Migdal, thanks for the suggestion. — Joel Reyes Noche Feb 15 '12 at 13:12
+1 for Just write one good one — AliBZ Nov 15 '12 at 19:15
for both I have raised two different flags and both are declined
Also this: the user has edited his question to include his major in the question
so having this comment on it:

@ff524 Hi! Did you really intent to introduce a new tag here?

will be obsolete
Statistics, @Compass. I edited also the question. — epsilone 1 hour ago
why my flag for obsolete is declined?!
I can not understand
I can not understand

yo'
@EnthusiasticStudent I wouldn't flag a recent comment as obsolete. Especially since there is not too many comments, and it can be useful to somebody

@yo' But it depends...
when a comment is stating something that is added to the question's text
it does not matter it is new or old

yo'
@EnthusiasticStudent yes, it depends, and the moderator decided to decline the flag.

it is on the post's text and it's comment is now obsolete

yo'
9:09 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent It does. You can't know, for instance, if the target user had read the comment by the time of raising the flag, and you can assume that he is interested in knowing the text rather than just having a lonely notification in his inbox.

yes... moderators' decissions are important here...

yo'
@ff524 I decided to edit into since it really looks like a missed keypress during the tag edit to me. If I'm wrong, then I apologise...

May be I am too much sticking to my preferences...

yo'
@EnthusiasticStudent that's something I can't (and won't) judge

@yo' No that was a typo, thanks for fixing it :)

yo'
9:13 PM
@ff524 ok, no worries then :)

@yo' can I ask you something irrelevant? please feel free if you prefer not to answer it

@EnthusiasticStudent This comment:
+1 for Just write one good one — AliBZ Nov 15 '12 at 19:15

yo'
@EnthusiasticStudent hit me of course

is not "just" a thank-you, because it specifically highlights an important and useful aspect of the post

@yo' is yo' some pronunciation of your full name?

yo'
9:14 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent not at all, it's just an arbitrary sequence of symbols that I like somehow :)

As for this comment,
Statistics, @Compass. I edited also the question. — epsilone 1 hour ago
it's not obsolete because it's from one hour ago - the people it's addressed to may not have seen it yet
As I said before
52 mins ago, by ff524
And, a comment that is meant purely to alert someone about an edit to a post might be "too chatty" after a long time, or after the person it's addressing writes a response indicating that they've seen it. But a recent comment like that still serves a purpose

@yo' aha, interesting and so nice :)

yo'
@ff524 @EnthusiasticStudent and IMHO, it serves another purpose: It shows that the OP cares about the posts, responds readily etc., that's an important thing, too

@yo' Well, presumably the fact that the OP edited the post shows that even without a comment

@ff524 got it.

9:17 PM
but the people who commented on the post wouldn't necessarily be alerted to the edit without a comment :)

yo'
@EnthusiasticStudent in my profile, you'll see that it's a recent thing, and I may go back to my previous username one day. My real name can be obtained from the profile as well, and you'll see that it contains no y at all, for instance ;)
@ff524 but it's not as apparent, especially if someone else makes another edit afterwards.

@yo' I thought for instance, your friend call you that way... not specifically part of your name.

yo'
@EnthusiasticStudent ah ok, well, no
:)

@EnthusiasticStudent You don't need to go looking for comments to flag. If you happen to be reading a post, and come across comments that are distracting and not helpful, you can flag them

yo'
@StrongBad I'm living a happy hat-less life, too :)

9:20 PM
It isn't really necessary to remove comments unless they are bothering or distracting

yo'
@ff524 amen.

@ff524 Yes... I understand :)

yo'
Now I'll have to go, tomorrow's gonna be a busy day :) Merry Christmas, @ff524 and @EnthusiasticStudent !

@yo' thanks, the same to you. Wish you all the best :)
