11:00 - 21:0021:00 - 23:00

11:29 AM
@Rusher @Rusher I am seriously thinking of putting in the effort to host the challenge. It will require some pretty involved simulator engine to drive the components. Currently I am thinking a rudimentary ray tracing engine but modelling Infra red instead of visual light.

@Doorknob oh, sounds interesting. I'll have a look later this month when I don't have to revise for exams any more :P

12:43 PM
SuperUser Election, 7 hours left to vote

I'm going to be super interested in puzzling.se when public beta happens but I know that I won't ask/answer 10 questions in the next 3 months.

A: Should homework be allowed?

Adam TolleyNew to this site, I came straight to this question as I was concerned that code golf was a thin veneer over answer my homework please. Now I see that those sort of questions will be jumped on by a bunch of elitist asshole alpha-nerds assisted by cruel instinct that can smell homework questions...

Ummmmm ^^

1:15 PM
Quick question... if another users golf's someone else's code, do we accept that edit?
Or reject?
They left the original beneath it. Seems kinda strange though...

I'd reject, personally, on the basis that it's no longer the answerer's code.
If it's a slight modification, it can be suggested in a comment. If it's a significant one, it can be its own answer.

Ok. I just skipped it since I wasn't sure.
That's a valid point. I don't see a reason to radically overhaul another answer now that you said that

I'm nervous for saturday because I'm going to a programming competition and I have no idea how we're going to do.

What is the name of the competition?

I mean, we made it to finals, which I thought was an unrealistic goal. No matter what, I'm happy with our performance. But still, I'm nervous :P
I believe it's just "ECOO Programming Competition" or something like that
I'll google it

1:22 PM
i found it I think

s/mpetition/ntest/

I recently competed in one of those.
Actually 3

Most of the problems are pretty easy, it's just hard to program quickly and efficiently enough that you get all the results in 30 seconds.
The exception being finals, where some of the previous years have had questions that I don't even know where to begin solving them.
Luckily, 100% of my job on my team is "watch the guy who's actually programming to make sure he doesn't make dumb mistakes", so I don't actually need to know how to do anything. :P
@TheDoctor Which ones?

2 that were put on by Rocky Mountain College and one in my hometown, a Hackathon

Cool
The ECCO contest only has highschool students as participants, and each board holds its own "qualifying round". We came in first at boardwide (out of 8), third at regionals (out of 55) and finals has 25 teams going

Q: Troll a beginner with addition

zscoderA beginner asked you to write a program that adds 2 integers. Troll him with a program that either does so, but with a very high time complexity, or a program that looks like it works, but actually doesn't. This is a popularity contest, so be as creative as possible. The code that gets the most u...

Ok, this one deserves deletion

2:12 PM
Sometimes I don't understand how people upvote: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/26683/20152

Generally I hit the up arrow to the left of the question and let the rest handle itself
2

Heh. I meant the reason behind the upvote of an answer :P

I know ;)

@undergroundmonorail Good luck in your contest. My third favorite part of high school was programming contests. Unfortunately we didn't have robotics :(

@Rusher Thanks :)

2:23 PM
Robotics is cool!

@14mRh4X0r I commented with the problems I could see in that post. Did I miss anything?

Did stack exchange go down?
I can't get to Board and Card Games or PPCG
or SO

Works for me

:(

@undergroundmonorail Maybe the regex, r'[/\S/g]' can be changed into r'\S'

2:35 PM
Ah, see, I barely know any regex so I didn't catch that :P

And thanks for writing that comment, I tend to be really bad at constructive comments.

No problem. It's something I'm actively trying to get better at, so i get practice where I can. :)
I really like reading people talk about stuff that they're super into, while I just kind of know about it.
Reading about high-level chess, for example, despite only ever playing chess for fun a few times in my life. I have no idea what's going on but it's super interesting.
@Rusher isup.me

@undergroundmonorail Oh it came back right after I asked. No idea why :-/ Thanks for that link though. I didn't know about that

@Rusher No problem

3:03 PM
h1
h0w 4r3 y411?

|-|! @+|-|3|)0(+0|2

It's sad how easy that is to read for anyone younger than 50
But ProgramFOX lost me..

"Hi @TheDoctor"? :-P

Hi

3:07 PM
Oh I see. Ultimate leet. brenz only does basic leet

‮I like U+202e
‮It's pretty cool
‮Someone star that ^^

I wish the MTG questions on Board and Card games were more frequent

I might have an account there if i had any decks
you play?
‮ @Rusher

3:25 PM
I was considering if something MTG-related could be turned into a challenge for here... maybe something like the chess/monopoly game state encoding challenges. But I think it's just too complex to convey in a code golf challenge, even if you try to limit yourself to some self-consistent subset of the rules.
Wait, @Rusher, what do you mean by "I wish MTG questions were more frequent" boardgames.stackexchange.com/tags ... That seems to amount to "I wish boardgames.SE was more active"?

MTG KOTH!!
^^ waaaaaaaay too difficult

I don't know, I could probably write a bot that runs a turbofog deck. :P

Then again, people have had challenges to write emulators
I wonder if we could bring back code-tennis?

3:42 PM
@m.buettner After you explain why what I said amounts to what you said, then I'll respond that very leading question(s?).

walks around asking random strangers if they like puzzles

Because MTG questions make up a bit over 1/4 of all the questions on the site?

@Doorknob I do! I'm just not knowledgable enough to promise n appropriate questions and 10-n answers in the next three months.

It's only less than one post per week @undergroundmonorail! :-P

@Rusher what Geobits said... it's by a wide margin the most used and most active tag.
@TheDoctor what's code tennis?

3:51 PM
@m.buettner I don't care about the other 3/4 of the site, and so my reply to your question statement is "0.25 times Yes" or "0.75 times No"
If my wish comes true and mtg grows more active, that fraction may change
This site does well because everyone is generally interested in the cool things people do in other languages. I don't understand how B&C games will ever get out of beta though when everyone only cares about their own game
Their chat room has like 24 hour gaps sometimes
Does anyone want to start a MTG stack site?

If a == [1, 2, 1, 22, 3], a[3] += 1 doesn't syntax error.

Well, that's just an inherent difference in the subjects. You can easily apply algorithms written in one language to another. It's hard to apply an answer from an MTG rules-question to any other game.

I'm not playing actively any more (for 6 years now), so I don't think I could really contribute.

Same here, haven't actively played in 8+ years.

It needs to be standardized anyway. The questions there all go out of date when a rule changes
So I went to CR today and some mod started spouting an endless stream of information at me. He was going over site policies, how to identify a mod, how only mods can do certain things, etc.
I was a little overwhelmed and didn't want to tell a mod "Hey guy, I can read FAQs on my own."
Plus he seemed like a nice guy. He obviously thought I was a brand new user or something.

4:18 PM
@TheDoctor Oh yea, sorry. I play. Didn't notice that you pinged me backwards.

1 hour later…
5:27 PM
Guys

Hi @Trimsty

Hi @ProgramFOX :D
I have a VPS server. Would't it be interesting if people made AIs to play a survival browser game (server side of course) as a KoTH? People could watch...

That would be cool

very

Great idea!

5:29 PM
now i just have to make a browser game
xD
I said "VPS server", didn't I :I
I'll get to work on it ;D
what do you guys think, kinda like Minecraft but 2D? And PVP?
(this is like glorified Survival: Create Your Wolf)
perhaps a different kind of game

That would be cool

suggestions? ;3

Would the output of the map be in realtime?

5:45 PM
@Trimsty When you connect to your VPS server, do you have to log in with a PIN number? Like on an ATM machine, I mean.

sorry, was afk for a bit
@TheDoctor Yeah, probably via WebSockets
@undergroundmonorail I'll approve and manually move the programs to my server, the speed of the response of the program should have an impact on it's performance and I don't want people with inferior systems and great entries falling behind

@Trimsty (Your clue is: Why did I reply to the message that I did? Why not a different one?)

@undergroundmonorail My server would have separate threads running for every entry, calling the program with the current state of the game and updating the state with it's response, and doing so repeatedly (that is, if i understand your clue correctly)

@Trimsty (Your next clue is: What do the three acronyms I used have in common?)

Hopefully it shows up well on my LCD display.

5:53 PM
Geobits gets it.
:P

I have a bad case of RAS syndrome, sorry.

@Geobits @undergroundmonorail The actual graphics of the game are separate from the how the entries interact with it
@undergroundmonorail still not getting it? :P

@Trimsty (Your final clue is: How do each of the acronyms I used relate to the word I used after them?)

@undergroundmonorail I can only perform O(1) functions in my brain. :P I don't think a passcode would be necessary, as there's no networking going on between the entries and the server since the entries are ON the server ;3

@Trimsty When you connect to your virtual private server server, do you have to log in with a personal identification number number? Like on an automatic teller machine machine, I mean.

6:00 PM
@undergroundmonorail I guess the answer would be no.
@undergroundmonorail What are the implications?

Yo. I'm back (grr glitchy WiFi card)

@TheDoctor wb ;3

@Trimsty the joke is "virtual private server server", "personal identification number number" and "automatic teller machine machine" :P

@undergroundmonorail ...reddit has ruined me ;_;

Such memes?

6:02 PM
RAS syndrome stands for Redundant Acronym Syndrome syndrome and refers to the redundant use of one or more of the words that make up an acronym or initialism with the abbreviation itself, thus in effect repeating one or more words. The term "RAS syndrome" itself is an example of self-referential humor. Common English examples * ADSL line - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line line * AC current - Alternating Current current * AMT tax - Alternative Minimum Tax tax * ATM machine - Automated Teller Machine machine * CAC card - Common Access Card card * CICS system - Customer Information Contro...

@TheDoctor You missed: A human being being non-deterministic about determinism
@TheDoctor wow

@TheDoctor now that you're back. What's code tennis?

Like code-golf, but with bigger balls and smaller skirts.

@m.buettner congrats, that is the first instance of 'code tennis' i have ever seen in my life

@Geobits ewwwww

6:05 PM
According to someone a long time ago, it's where two people send code back and forth optimizing it

So, any mechanical suggestions for a game played by AIs?
i want it complicated ooo:

Did you catch the Forth pun?

@TheDoctor almost :S

@Trimsty generate a map with cellular automatas (i can help)

@TheDoctor I have some experience with cellular automata ;3
@TheDoctor Help welcomed though @_@

@TheDoctor that banner isn't actually working, is it? :O

@m.buettner it is

I'll show you

@m.buettner golly comes with a copy of it :P

Life>Guns>Golly Ticker.rle

6:08 PM
I'm pretty sure it wasn't put together by hand. Surely there are scripts to make stuff like that

@Trimsty I see... I was hoping it might be some obscure/long-forgotten type of challenge that would fit as a ppcg question ^^
umm

@m.buettner A ticker generator as @undergroundmonorail implies would be a good one

clicked the wrong message to respond to

Metapixels have been constructed by hand!!!

@TheDoctor my "I see..." should have been @TheDoctor

6:09 PM
@m.buettner still, it's a good code-challenge :P

True :D

I want to answer a challenge in CA, like WireWorld or Codd

@TheDoctor that...would be hard
@TheDoctor NP-hard
Anyway, uh, the browser game. I want it to be something human-playable like 2D mc (maybe even arcade-flavoured). CA might play an underlying part in it somewhere obfuscated (for the good submitters to figure out and predict a "random" action)
Perhaps just the current design will work with special map elements
I'll get to work on the front-end first
<3 graphics
I shall make it Doge themed
names, anybody?
friend suggested Doge-ventures

6:29 PM
DogeCraft, Dogaria, Dogebound, Doge Starve

@m.buettner I like Dogebound a lot :D
@m.buettner Thanks, i'll be using that one ;3 also, nice pun on the last one :P
I need a scoring fomula. How about (avg death separation in minutes)*(time played in minutes)*(average value of items handled (between 1 and 1.2))?

@Trimsty except it doesn't make sense :P

@m.buettner :P
My friends are still suggesting names, they've come up with "Need for Shibes" and "Doge Kombat"
"Call of Doge"
"Revenge of the Doges"
"Grand Theft Doge"
;_;

In view of today's release, I'd totally vote for Doge Vikings.

@m.buettner I'm in the third world and thus do not understand that reference
@m.buettner so yeah, that sucks

6:40 PM
That's a reference to Lost Vikings, 1992 SNES and DOS game by Blizzard (which was called Silicon & Synapse back then) - and Blizzard released it for free today

@m.buettner Ooohhhh. Maybe, not as catchy as Dogebound though

true

woah, 8:50 pm already?

In your time zone maybe :P

7:19 PM
I attempted to sprite a tree...
didn't go too well :p

7:56 PM
Anyone know a good awk interpreter that I don't have to download?

online awk? You're weird

@Rusher sorry, nope :c

That's like online grep or wc

you guys know that tree above?
the worst part is, now i have to sprite a shibe :S

8:13 PM
coding dungeons and doges?

"This site is currently in read-only mode; we’ll return with full functionality soon."
Not just me again right?

Fine here.

Lies!

Aaaaand it's gone.

We're being whooped by that awk solution @Geobits

8:19 PM
hi :)
yes read only not just you

Hello

@Geobits it crashes if both numbers are Integer.MAX_VALUE

@durron597 I think someone already wrote that in a comment on his answer

yes, that was me.

Oh yea. Sorry. Comments took ages to load. Seems to be working better now

8:22 PM
Eh, technically it doesn't work for all "positive 32-bit integers" anyway (MAX_INT is just under 2^31).

I hope you don't mind me intruding on your answer, especially since i wrote the question ;)

Hah, I didn't even notice it was your question :)

@durron597 Is 2147483647 the largest possible input?

yes

That's what I get after import sys sys.maxint

8:25 PM
i'll edit when the site comes back

Ok good

what does it mean when it goes read only mode
@Geobits m/=i;i=1; -> m/=i--;

So... the interpreter I have read in 2147483647 2147483647 without crashing but it has been running for a while and isn't done yet

Yeah, I'm thinking I should lower it, I don't want array bucketing to be the reason solutions don't work.
maybe I'll make it 2 <= m,n <= 65536 I didn't think about that when writing the question.
I hate editing stuff like that after people have been working on it though

I'd leave it now

8:30 PM
I'm half inclined to just start putting every single post in the sandbox :-/

Your question made the hot network list :P
32 bit integer inputs were a reasonable limitation. I don't see how sandboxing would have caught that
Geobits and I both wrote a solution completely ignoring it, apparently
I assume mine would finish someday on a supercomputer lol

hot network list on a site that's read only, i guess it will be there for awhile! :)

Also, I sandboxed a question for three weeks once and actively replied to comments and stuff. Released it and it was broken in two days.

two days is longer than most of my questions have been ;)

That's when you say "K. You win. More importantly, the best answer (in my opinion) is LegitAnswerGuy."

8:40 PM
ahem
:P

acknowledges that Doorknob has arrived.
I should copy all of my chat messages to clipboard, write something incredibly vulgar, and then ninja edit them.

So.
Admittedly I am not nearly as active as the rest of the people in this room
But I see very little activity from Chris Jester-Young and gnibbler
Meanwhile, I always see @Doorknob (hi!) around and, to boot, you did very well in the SO moderator election
Given the lack of activity of other mods (maybe they respond to lots of flags and I wouldn't know), how do beta sites get diamonds next to different people's names?

8:57 PM
@durron597 Heh, thanks ;) But I don't think you're judging this fairly. Lots of the things mods do are behind-the-scenes and not publicly visible. (Although I wouldn't mind if they were a bit more publicly active (chat, editing, closing, deletion, etc.) either.)

Well I'm trying to be fair
I fully admit that I don't know what they do (or don't do) behind the scenes

The mods are selected at the beginning of beta, as "pro tem" mods, by SE staff.
I believe one or two of our mods have mentioned handing back their diamonds, but that'd be a shame; they're all nice people. I'm fairly sure that they do a lot more than it looks like they're doing
