TFW your non-programmer friends are using Discord and they don't get why you need `\\` to type a backslash

user165474
There are 10 types of people: Those who understand binary, and those who don't. And those who didn't expect a ternary joke here.

user165474
(not my own original joke)

@HyperNeutrino there is 10 type of people: those who got annoyed at the grammar errors until they realised this was unary
actually that doesn't make sense
better now

"There are 10 types of people: Those who expected this to be in Base10, Those who didn't expect this to be in Base2, And those who never expected this to be in Base3."

12:08 AM
there are 10 types of people: losers, winners, men, women, programmers, laymen, scientists, mathematicians, and those who can't count.

@ConorO'Brien are those mutually exclusive?

I'll give you 2 guesses

I'm going to guess yes and maybe

Q: Shortest Payload Compatable Quine

Down ChristopherWe have Golf You A Quine for Great Good and we have "Hello, World!". All of those are the same type: a collection of programs and none of them get accepted. I decided to round this off with Payload Quines. No answer will be accepted but this is still Code Golf so make it as short as possible Cha...

wait lol for quines aren't strings basically "reading the source code"

12:15 AM
no?

@NathanMerrill You here?
hides from sudden gaot downattack

Pretty sure that challenge is impossible without reading the source code.

^
except maybe in some obscure esolang

The problem is the unescapability requirement
That would make it near-impossible
(If I'm reading it right)

Any language that can solve that is either reading it's own source code, thus invalidating it, or not inescapable, thus invalidating it.

12:23 AM
I mean, I can make an esolang that does it
that doesn't do either of those things

But that wouldn't be very valid, would it

well yeah oc

Actually, I think I might have a solution...

( could be a string that is unescapable, Q prepends Q(, implicit output.
short of that, I don't think it's possible, unless ATaco corrects me

I think that challenge is the exact reason the sandbox exists
8

12:24 AM
^

Hold on, Writing a valid solution.
(I actually thought of one!)

wait haven't we basically had this challenge before, minus printing the program?

yeah, also minus quine restrictions

what was it again? I remember it was BF that won
but like, weird BF

SMBF?
or EBF

12:30 AM
No, it was an implementation in an esolang
and ! started the "input", which was how it worked
it was a cat program ending with a !

Yeah, That's how I was going to solve it...
I'm writing my own quine for it...

I mean, unescapability can be done with a simple /dev/fd/1PIG<insert...>
I wrote the PIG interpreter with that usage in mind

CMC: What's the the oldest piece of electronic technology you own, going by the date it was manufactured? It does not still need to work. Post a photo if possible, especially for obscure things. Oldest wins.
Probably an N64 for me, circa 1996

@LegionMammal978 now I am

CMC: find a pair of languages A, B where there are two challenges on this site (C, D) such that the optimal solution in A on C is shorter than the optimal solution in B on C, and that the optimal solution in B on D is shorter than the optimal solution in A on D.

12:45 AM
Is anyone here a Mathematica wizard?

martin iirc
@DJMcMayhem do you think 2i2i<insert text here> is valid for this?

Yeah, but he's not on right now ;-;

@HelkaHomba Bell & Howell movie camera, circa the 50s
getting picture rn

Does anyone know how to get a sampling distribution of means in mathematica?

@Riker Not even close

12:46 AM
why not?

well shit

What if <text here> contains <esc>

doesn't matter

12:47 AM
@ГригорийПерельман a literal escape keypress isn't text

I've got a theoretical solution, but it's 6kb.

lol

@ConorO'Brien are you typing that url?

@Riker Yeah but this is V, there are no keypresses.

@NathanMerrill prolly if he took it on his phone

12:48 AM
@NathanMerrill yes, I uploaded the picture from my phone and was transferring the link

@ГригорийПерельман vim actually I was thinking
didn't make that clear though
@ConorO'Brien called it

Oh, 2i2i isn't a vim quine anyway.

yes it is
hm, well you do have to end the program with esc so techinically not

Yeah.
Only works as a V quine

@ConorO'Brien snazzy

Random QuestionTM: Is there an app for Stack Exchange Chat/is one being developed?

no
there is not and no plans for one

@HelkaHomba I have a TV that's pretty old. Not sure what the year is though

@Riker if you are going to make that edit, I'd also add sample programs to make it clear

Q: Add chat rooms for Android app

Samuel LiewBeing able to join chat rooms from the Android app would be a plus! It would truly make us connected on the go, instead of having to sit down at our desks and open a browser window. This will allow more users to fully utilize the chat system and join events no matter where they are.

@NathanMerrill you mean working answers?
or just examples of what might work
in a fictional language

@HelkaHomba Casio VL-1 monophonic keyboard/synthesizer, circa 1980

12:52 AM
the latter

Q: Include some chat capabilities in iOS app

Enrico SusatyoCurrently, the app notifies users when they're mentioned in chat. However, when we tap on the notification, we got redirected out of the app to Safari. Is there a chance we can get some chat capabilities in the app, so that we don't have to login again in Safari to quickly reply to the messages...

@NathanMerrill do you think it would be overstepping to edit some in?

I mean, if he gives you the go-ahead
but otherwise, yes, I think it'd be overstepping

hm, ok

@LuisMendo drools

like, the concept of being able to add any arbitrary text there is a rather interesting one

12:53 AM
That looks really cool

but I'm not entirely convinced it was his idea and not yours :)

if it gets closed I get imaginary dibs on that idea then :p

that said, I'm not sure its possible in any language. Like, if you have a string, how do you close it?
the only way I could see it being possible is if the text can be added to the end of a program
and you're able to get all of your reading and processing code before the string
and the string auto-closes at an end of file

yeah

also, how would the eof character work?

12:56 AM
What, 0x4?

oh, apparently that isn't a character

yeah, "text" needs to be clarified

0x4 is EOT, but sometimes referred to as EOF.

@DJMcMayhem Nah, this one is much more drool-like. Specially from 1:10 (not me playing)

12:57 AM
Otherwise, -1 is an acceptable character code for an End of File.

also, it could be possible with 2D languages that wrap

@ConorO'Brien I can't be sure about optimal but I bet many of the languages that are longer than Mathematica here can beat it in other challenges

but even then, I'm still not sure how you would signal "stop reading this string" or "stop printing out these characters"

Is the sampling distribution of a normal distribution itself normal?
Does anyone know?

Hey Pavel, is there anything you'd like to see in RProgN?

1:02 AM
@ГригорийПерельман The sampling distribution of which statistic?

@NathanMerrill it's been closed now. Do you think I can try to sandbox a better version? or should I wait?

@LuisMendo The mean
@ATaco Is there a proper builtin for randomness yet?

@ГригорийПерельман In that case I think the answer is yes

Would you also happen to know how to get such a distribution in Mathematica?

@LuisMendo ... I just clicked that link and got a link to a userscript I installed earlier today
wtf chrome
can't repro either

1:05 AM
@ГригорийПерельман No idea of Mathematica. But the distribution is the same normal, only with the sigma divided by the sqrt of number of samples

Not yet, I'll need to add one.

@Riker I'd wait a bit. Also, see if you can even think of a language its even possible in

@NathanMerrill yeah, am doing

@LuisMendo It's fine if there's not a builtin, I just need a way to get the sampling distribution.
Thanks

np!

1:07 AM
@Dennis I like your verdict. I'm glad you're a mod :)

Wait, mod things happened?
What?

he hammered the post
the payload quine one

Oh yes +1 that.
Good call.

$0 would be cheating for a bash quine, right?

@NathanMerrill :)

1:10 AM
At least two answers were posted for it. Both were invalid. ATaco at least tried to make a valid quine though.

Can anyone help me parse this sentence:
> Write a recursive method, fib, to calculate the nth 6th Fibonacci number
isn't nth 6th oxymoron

uh
yes

@Downgoat I say it's an erratum and "6th" was meant to be deleted

maybe n refers to the starting values?

Or perhaps "nth 6th" means the 6th (n=1), then the 12th (n=2) etc

1:12 AM
hm

FML I just spent 2 hours installing a fucking fake screen
It's some cheap TN LCD with a plastic cover.

@LuisMendo ah good idea

is using $0 valid for a bash quine?
I don't think so, falls under reading source

Well $0 outputs location of script

@Downgoat Or you're supposed to compute both.

1:13 AM
FFS

>_> i can never tell with CS teacher but I'm not sure she actually grades the homework

Unclear specification is unclear.

@Downgoat name your function "nth6thfib()"

@Lynn I did not know about Haskell's shows, that's a nice optimization

@Dennis brb seeing if I can close homework as unclear what you're asking

1:18 AM
Ask your teacher to post homework as PPCG challenges and to grade the answers.

@Dennis That's what I do, but I make them CMCs.

>_>

Seriously?
Here's my eBay feedback
>
I received a poor quality fake screen. It has poor color reproduction, bad viewing angles, and the front panel is plastic. Additionally, the promised screen protectors were not included. Keep in mind that the description states that this is an OEM part.

@DownChristopher are you going to attempt to salvage the challenge, or can I try to make a new version and post it myself?

1:29 AM
@ГригорийПерельман PowerShell, 26 bytes -- $args[0]-gt0|%{$_+!($_%2)}

@LuisMendo in spain, do you ever say things such as "googler" or "googleando", in sentences like "I'm googling it" -> "lo estoy googleando"?
in english, it's somewhat common to say "I'll google it, 1 second" or "let me google that" (using google as a verb)

@ГригорийПерельман :O your java teacher discovered Java 8

@ГригорийПерельман RProgN-2, 10 bytes. {0<}-{1+}r

@Riker My spanish teacher uses googlear

hm, cool
argh insert xkcd giraffe comic here

1:32 AM
The problem with trying to ask PPCG to do your homework is this is not good practice.

@MistahFiggins not "googler"?

Just because it's shorter, doesn't mean you should ever use it.

it's "googleando, right?

@Dennis idk I'd probably get in trouble if her challenge gets closed

@MistahFiggins I just say "googleando" on spanish.se, so idk

1:33 AM
I think using your hammer to avoid doing your school work is suspendable.

@ATaco haha

> (sondeo rápido googleando cada opción).

if it was er/ir, it would be googliendo

When will Australian.SE be a thing?

1:34 AM
@MistahFiggins oh, good point

"What is the correct way to say 'Hello Friend, would you like to go out for a drink?' in Australian?"
"G'day <Redacted>, Fancy a Tinny?"

and with googlear, it kinda separates the parts: goo-gl-e-ar vs goog-ler

@Riker Definitely googlear.

hm, ok
@Dennis do you ever use that in paraguay?
@ATaco when australians break off from the world and start speaking australian, a completely incomprehensible dialect of english.

On a daily basis.

1:36 AM
@Dennis lol

Clearly you haven't seen a bunch of Australian's having a chat.

@ATaco example?

"Yeah Nah", and "Nah Yeah" are complete valid sentances.

> Does anyone else speak Australian
XD

ikr
anchorman 2 is best movie

1:37 AM
translate: sentance
(from English) sentance

Australian Slang is complex enough to have dictionaries.

Hey, Bing speaks Australian

@Riker :( Xfinity does not have

Speaking of "foreign" languages xD

1:39 AM
user image
2
Does not correctly translate Australian.

@Downgoat youtube does though, if you don't really care about pirating
@ATaco that's glorious

@ATaco English (Auto-Detected)

translate: oi mate, wanna head up the bottle-o and grab a slab a tinnies?
(from English) oi mate, wanna head up the bottle-o and grab a slab a tinnies?
:/

@MistahFiggins It's "googleANdo", not "googleanDO" </hermione>

> hermoine
> oine
oi watch your 'oi's
@ATaco do you guys actually speak like that?

1:41 AM
The correct translation is "Hey, do you want to go to the Liquor store and buy a 24 pack of Beer?"
And yes, especially around the more rural parts of the country.

@Riker Oi vey

my thought train at that point

@Riker I disagree

"damnit why does carusocomputing's avatar have to be so similar to AdmBorkBork's"
8
>_>

1:42 AM
Tempted to make a command NO that acts like a negated filter, e.g., $isneg NO
@Riker SAME

I was in a different tab with desktop notifications, so I only saw the image really
username is a bit hard to read

@Riker It's carusocomputing though iirc. And they don't chat.

huh, didn't realize they didn't chat
but thanks for the name, edited
@WheatWizard <shrug> I'm going by wikipedia, though it doesn't really matter
why would it be capitalized though?
when you're not referring to Quine himself of course

Australian Cuisine is also pretty out there.
We range from Vegemite to the Glorious HSP

I've been to outback steakhouse does that count as australian cuisine
@ATaco vegemite is amazing
people put wayyy too much on though

1:45 AM
Yeah, although we do eat it from the spoon.

@ATaco what's 'Glorious HSP'?

It's a great way to kill mouth Ulcers.
It's essentially a Kebab in a box.
That's laid ontop of chips.

o_O
@ConorO'Brien pls youtube.com/watch?v=XfR9iY5y94s music video is so much better

I neither wish to watch it nor be responsible for its contents

1:47 AM
o_O it's not that bad
it's got a dude with dancing a fake koala

@Riker It's worse when I go "Wait a minute, I don't remember asking this challenge ..."
4

eh
@ATaco O_O

I love this country.

@ATaco TELL ME PLS WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES "head full of zombie" MEAN

@LuisMendo Oh cool, I'll make sure to check it out. I like synths a lot, but I don't have a ton of experience with analogs

1:48 AM
google says high on marijuana, tired, or heat exhausted (sources contradicting each other)

@ГригорийПерельман Stacked, 10 bytes: [0<]1/NO#^ @ATaco

Head full of Zombie is a new one for me.

it's from the song

-Shrug-

> Travelling in a fried-out Kombi, on a hippie trail, head full of zombie.

1:49 AM
probably just because it rhymed

There are slang variations depending on which state you're in.

oh, wikipedia says it means high on marijuana

People who use return like a function in Java should not be allowed to program O_O

ninja'ed

@Downgoat what?

1:50 AM
@Downgoat o_O elaborate?

@ConorO'Brien e.g.:

@WheatWizard I re-disagree. "Quine" was originally the name of a person but (for whatever reason) it is not capitalized in modern texts and it's weird to do so (just like diesel or nacho)

My keyboard full on derped.
By yeah, that also removes 0.

no it doesn't
it's "remove negative then increment"

public int fib(int n) {
     if (n <= 1) return(n);
     else return( (f(n-1)) + (f(n-2)) )
}

1:51 AM
@HelkaHomba yeah, that's my opinion also
@Downgoat o_O wha'ts wrong with that

Oh, my mistake.

@Downgoat oh, people who add parens to return?

@ConorO'Brien no parens to everything
like around method calls too

parens to return is OK
parens around everything is not

1:52 AM
(j(a(v(a()))))

(l(i(s(p()))))

(everything)

@HelkaHomba My feeling is that it is a tad disrespectful to the legacy of Quine to not capitalize his word. For the same reason I capitalize Turing Complete or Von Neumann Machine. I also don't like lowercase Qs so that might contribute a bit to my opinion. I don't care that much to be honest I made the edit to fix other stuff that actually mattered.

the queer queen in a queue

quite

1:54 AM
Also, Stacked and RProgN2 still tie.

I can't seem to golf this down further, not without an increment builtin.

It is also worth pointing out that I am extremely bad at capitalization and frequently capitalize words accidentally without much real reason.

@WheatWizard I don't really think it's a big deal either. No tough 🍪

I too am bad at it, even though I know the correct way to do it.
