Retina, 25 bytes, ^(?!.*(?<!:)[^:;\s](?!:))

nice

@Dennis Can you pull CG one more time?

Code Golf?

pull it? he dominates code golf :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Finally got around to implementing all the tools for that lego piece challenge. It's 32 bytes which is kinda meh but shorter than the rest so that's cool
@HelkaHomba Cinnamon Gum

12:02 AM
@quartata Done.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Quel est le resultat de (+)(1,2,3)?
@quartata I thought CG is for fixed output

@LeakyNun What made you think that? :P

That be bubblegum

@LeakyNun c'est trois--parce que le troisième paramètre est ignoré

12:05 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ d'accord

where is the meta thing for "avoid 'do x without y'"?
@LeakyNun je pense que cette est mal--peut-être le bas chevre veut répare
my french is bad :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ voici
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ "le bas chevre"

the down goat :P

"répare"

I'm too lazy & forgot how to future conjugate that

12:08 AM
Stop Frenching :I

( ͡° ͜ʖ °)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ then add the r at the end
@HelkaHomba Arrête d'anglais

jamais

toujours
:)
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I think it's bad - maybe the down goat wants to fix?

According to Google, "jamais" means never and ever ._.

12:12 AM
@Zizouz212 correct.

@HelkaHomba Depends - generally it's never

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Full explanation if you're curious

@HelkaHomba well, yes. ne <> jamais is the proper "never", and jamais is never informally, but technically means "ever"
@quartata thanks!

@HelkaHomba It would be equivalent to the "ever" in negative sentences

12:13 AM
I've never done it! Ever! - Je ne l'ai pas fait! Jamais!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ <>?

@HelkaHomba <> is omitted text :P

@HelkaHomba old-style !=

Je ne le ferrai jamais = I won't do it ever
@HelkaHomba Je ne fais jamais = I never do, but word-for-word would be "I not do ever"
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Comment télécharger make?

12:14 AM
@HelkaHomba vous ne pouvez pas nous arrêter. nous sommes une infection

@LeakyNun qu'est que c'est "make"

Tout le monde parle en francais!
Mais pourquoi?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ voici
@Zizouz212 pour la diversité

Almenaŭ uzi ion universala : Programado Enigmoj kaj

vous utilisez "Fene^tre"?

12:16 AM
Vous avez plein de diversite deja! Regardez voz langues!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ oui

Langues, comme les langues de programmation!

@Zizouz212 Je ne sais pas, il y a beaucoup de francophones ici.
Kinda weird actually.

@LeakyNun @"node_modules\.bin\babel" src\ -d dist\ --source-maps

12:16 AM
lol, I'm considering going to a French university program :P

@HelkaHomba I should probably get around to learning Esperanto

puis exécutez cette

Well, bilingual, but a fair bit of French

@Zizouz212 ils s'appellent les langages, pour l'ordinateur
Les langues sont ceux que l'on parle

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh hey, when did you improve ,a?
dammit 24 bytes

12:17 AM
Darn it... 12 years of French and I still don't get it...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ d'où?

@quartata More so that Logjam? (or w/e)

@LeakyNun dans le "folder"

Meh, I don't talk about programming languages in French anyway

Haven't done any logjam in a while

12:18 AM
@quartata after you told me to :3

The code doesn't compress too good anymore since it's getting more and more random.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Je ne comprends pas

Poor Zopfli only squeezed a byte out of it.
BB96 did better though.

@LeakyNun demandez le chevre

$ git clone github.com/cheddar-lang/Cheddar.git && cd Cheddar
fatal: could not create work tree dir 'Cheddar': Permission denied

12:19 AM
._.

@LeakyNun You don't have write access to the directory you're in
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ *demandez

@LeakyNun First is "asking the goat" second is "ask the goat"

@quartata No, you can use infinitive to form commands

12:21 AM
I keep on having to look up the french for programming terms -.-

Mini challenge: Tell us a real English word that is actually an abbreviation or shortening of another less common word. e.g. pram -> perambulator

@LeakyNun That's for impersonal imperatives

@Downgoat probably, I don't know

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ demand the goat?

@quartata alright
@Downgoat no, "demander" means "ask"

12:22 AM
@Downgoat ask

@HelkaHomba Ooh, I saw a really good one the other day. Lemme see if I can remember it

@HelkaHomba laser

@LeakyNun Good. But I knew that one :P

@HelkaHomba "brb"

light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation isn't exactly a word though.

12:23 AM
> real English word
If that's in the dictionary....

@Dennis alright

Darn, I can't remember.

@Dennis True. But a phrase is ok I guess

@Downgoat I downloaded the zip for make
what should I do next
@Dennis Podes responder a mi cuestion por favor?

12:26 AM
@LeakyNun have you cloned cheddar and have node+npm?

@Downgoat I think so

@Quill pls halp. how start server:
$ npm run start_server

> stack-news@1.0.0 start_server /Users/vihan/Documents/Code/StackNews
> forever start dist/web/index.js

warn: --minUptime not set. Defaulting to: 1000ms
warn: --spinSleepTime not set. Your script will exit if it does not stay up for at least 1000ms
info:    Forever processing file: dist/web/index.js

@Downgoat it doesn't work like that
you need actual servers
or at least an instance of Redis server running

>_> I just want to submit PR with design tweaks

12:29 AM
@LeakyNun ¿Cuál pregunta?

@Quill For Aussies, what's the turps limit for driving an ute? (using slang from here)

@Dennis En la frase "mis versos", el uve suive el ese, entonces se pronuncia el ese como /z/ o todavia como /s/?

I don't know about the other states, but >=0.05 [source]

And for playing a lute?

@Downgoat halp with make please

12:32 AM
ok?

@HelkaHomba I really don't understand <_<

@LeakyNun No lo sé. Aquí hablamos con seseo.

@Dennis eh, el seseo es que el sueno /θ/ y el sueno /s/ vuelven uno
porque /mizversos/ es mas facil para pronunciar que /misversos/

I don't understand IPA, sorry.

eh
se pronuncia el ese en "mis versos" como el zeta in ingles?

12:35 AM
English pronunciation has rules? o_O

Wait, what?

??

Is someone trying to make sense of English pronunciation?
lynch him

@Dennis Do you pronounce the s in "mis versos" like the z in English

12:37 AM
Like in zoom? That sound doesn't exist in Spanish, at least not in the dialect I speak.

@Dennis like cuando vos lo hablas rapidamente
los suenos cambian mucho

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Can you explain the 31-byte V lego piece answer?

por ejemplo, el "d" en "edad" se vuelve como el "th" en la palabra inglesa "the"
@Dennis no?

The Spanish spoken in Spain sounds very different, and I'm hardly an expert. Also, out of respect for the other chatters, I really think we should chat in English here.

@Dennis eh, alright
"chatter"

12:42 AM
What word is this about?
"Mis versos"? La pronuncia como "s"
At least I think. I'm pretty bad at pronunciation in general

Why is it that every time I join this chat room you guys are talking in a different language? I mean, it would be fine if you were talking in programming languages and discussing them, but discussing them in foreign languages is a bit odd...

@GamrCorps Eh, because I'm here xd
sorry

no you are fine, don't worry 'bout it :P

@LeakyNun Ask on Spanish Language SE if you want a comprehensive answer

@quartata good idea

12:47 AM
@quartata if you want rep* ftfy

@Dennis This video seems to confirm my hypothesis.

@quartata oh, haha, I think I posted that in the wrong challenge.

@GamrCorps Haha, that's funny, but seriously, like half this room's population doesn't live in the USA. And the other half typically has some foreign language knowledge/experience.

.i xu mi kakne tavla do fo la jbobau

logjam alert

12:50 AM
I knew that was coming.....

Is this sentence correct (English perspective)? "Why my app stops working when I switch the place of elements?"

ugh I haven't read anything written in it in like 6 months. I've completely forgotten all my vocab

@El'endiaStarman That's true. I guess this is what I get for taking Latin. Who knew that another benefit of taking a more common foreign language would be multilingual chat rooms. Oh well.

@Shafizadeh why does is better

@Shafizadeh No. "Why does my app stop working when I switch the place of the elements"

12:52 AM
ah I see, thx

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ so thats why you asked for the link to the "doing x without y"....

@GamrCorps yup :3

xup

hahaha
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ question: If I made the top half of the X of random characters and just reflected it would that still count, or does every character have to be randomized?

@quartata Yup, I totally posted the wrong TIO link. This is the right one: v.tryitonline.net/…
I'll post an explanation soon

12:58 AM
@GamrCorps hmm.... I'll have to say every char must be randomized. This prevents someone from making a single strut and making it four times

ok thanks

Q: Do X without Y

Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'BʀɪᴇɴUsually, it is said that "Doing X without Y" can be a trap to beginners writing challenges (source). However, I am cocky and think that I can definitely make an X with any Ys. Randomly. Oh yes, this will be good. Challenge: Given an odd integer n greater than or equal to 1, output an ex of side ...

@Downgoat basically install redis, run redis-server, comment out the if statement in src/modules/route.js, then do gulp && node dist/web/index.js

@NewMainPosts the smart among you will notice that there are only 14 characters there.

@NewMainPosts Ugh, Cg doesn't have random

Ping me when you post an explanation. I'm little sad that CG didn't perform as well as V here

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan cinnamon gum

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Cinnamon Gum. Look at the newest answer, I made a 32-byte one with some new features
I'm hoping there's some really simple thing I can add to make it better and that your V answer will give me inspiration :P

1:21 AM
@quartata Explained:
22
A: Print a Lego piece

Dr Green Eggs and Iron ManV, 43, 40, 38 36 bytes One of the longest V answers I've ever written... Àio ddÀPñóo î½o u2Pí.«/| °| Vr-HVr_ Try it online! Since this contains unicode and unprintable characters, here is a reversible hexdump: 0000000: c069 6f20 1b64 64c0 50f1 f36f 20ee bd6f .io .dd.P..o ..o 0000010: 0d0a ...

Cool, thanks.

I really just explained the improvements, rather than explaining the whole thing again.

don't show downgoat >_>

Inb4 ";_; Y U do dis" because you included goat on the list.

1:24 AM
Interesting.
It did give me an idea...

Nice! Which part?

The construction of the top and bottom.
It would save 3 bytes.

Ah, the Vr- and Vr_ parts?

Yeah.

I've checked fish, but I only like it raw.

1:28 AM
Yeah, I've realized the majority of V answers use Vr<n> somehow, so I figured setting up Ò as a synonym would help.

Who eats boar :o

Althought this is definitely my favorite new feature.

Boar is delicious.

@HelkaHomba I have had everything on this list.
Even elk lmao

@quartata You ate elk while laughing your ass off?

1:32 AM
No.... well, maybe. Don't recall.

@quartata So how does CG work? Is it still almost entirely just compression?

Question: What does IBM do these days apart from making huge AIs?

@LegionMammal978 Keep developing CPUs and their C compiler?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan not really anymore. It's kinda like a really golfy markup language. Basically there are different modes of operation (specified by the first byte) that manipulate the code and the input. Then if the result starts with a backtick, it chops off the backtick and the next mode and starts again with either everything after an exclamation point in the code,a new line from stdin or the last input if stdin is exhausted for input. It's kinda a bit like Slashes, actually.
I hope the explanation was coherent, it is really hard to explain.

1:38 AM
huh. That's almost like V. Golfy, string-based, modal.

> The Processor Unit chip (PU chip) has an area of 678 mm² and contains 3.99 billion transistors

But it sounds more complicated.

Transistors have gotten too small, I give up

@LegionMammal978 That's wild.
I wouldn't touch it if I were you.

It's not imperative, at least not in the traditional sense. It modifies itself

1:40 AM
Interesting. So It's like it modifies it's own source code into more source code/larger strings?

Yes exactly. I think the best way to learn it is read the source and ask me for examples :P I will make docs sometime

I probably won't put a ton of effort into learning it, since I already have a favorite string based golfing language.
That I also need to write docs for.

Hehe

@Zizouz212 Yeah, it's ~5.88 transistors/µm²

Although, I'm excited to have more competition!

1:44 AM
CG has been brewing for almost 6 months, I just haven't gotten around to making it good until now
V will probably end up being more flexible but I think CG will be a fun experiment

V is not very flexible. It's only branching/conditionals are extremely hacky.
I guess it's ok when it doesn't have to handle edge cases.
Actually, I suppose it has a builtin "eval", but it's rarely the golfiest approach, so I haven't used it much.

I don't even have loops lmao. l is lookup mode which makes an ok conditional
That's how I handled the special case.

Just out of curiosity, what would the byte count be without the special case?

22-23.

1:50 AM
Tough to know without actually compressing it. Probably about that though.
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan :P

You know, golf is really interesting to think about from an information theory perspective.
When you get a whole bunch of different languages, with different designs, you start to approximate the optimal Kolmogorov-Complexity of a challenge.
Or the way to calculate a certain value with the least amount of data.

2:12 AM
@HelkaHomba kangaroo and crocodile are delicious btw

@Quill wat
@HelkaHomba ಠ________________ಠ
> chevon (goat)
;_____________; @HelkaHomba y u do dis Q________Q
ಠ_ಠ to the two people who have consumed my brethren
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan :|

@Downgoat Inb4

@Downgoat goat isn't bad, it's not great though

I don't think any of those choices are right
@Quill Kangaroo and crocodile? That's something I haven't had

2:25 AM
@quartata Fixed >;P

Well unlike goats I have several defense mechanisms
Like thunderbolts and glider guns
I'm at the top of the food chain, really.

Uh, I thought humans were. And I'm a superhuman.

I eat humans.
(Well that ended that conversation fast)

Yeah, you scared all us humans off.

2:41 AM
Mm, I need decimal-to-unary and unary-to-decimal don't I
Decimal to unary can be done with `p~0~ but thats long

Decimal to unary in V is dw@"é1
So I think you're fine.

@quartata *'1 :3

@HelkaHomba I'm starting to notice a theme in your strawpolls.

Oh?
Futurology?

2:50 AM
Or food.

@HelkaHomba that's a tough one

@HelkaHomba That was actually fairly easy for me. Automatic taxi please!

it was either 3, 4, or 5 for me :P

@El'endiaStarman Really? What's the point if you're still paying for the gas? I wouldn't mind driving.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Have you ever driven for ten hours? :P

2:51 AM
^

Oh. That's an excellent point. I've never driven more than... uh
idk 2 or 3.

I'm not driving until I'm 18. I fear that I will nerd snipe myself while driving

Or in a place where you have no clue where you are

I am easily distracted

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Does turning 18 magically protect you from nerd-sniping?
I think I'm just as vulnerable. I golf in my head while driving.

2:52 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan no, but by then I hope to have overcome it :P besides, I think I can skip the permit at 18

Once you have enough driving experience, driving on the highway becomes a weird sort of boring. I often think about all manner of things, and it's essentially become normal for me to not really pay attention to my surroundings (in a muscle-memory sort of way).

#2 would be awesome if I could afford to buy random shit from amazon all the time.

I'd probably build so many PCs

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan #2 for groceries would be real nice
And I bet drone delivered groceries will happen in my lifetime :D
though idk about "no additional shipping fees"
(does "groceries" = food & etc. shopping outside the US?)

2:57 AM
g'night

3:13 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I got my permit at 16 and my license at 18. I skipped an intermediate phase - drive any time with someone else that has a license. I do suggest getting a permit because you really need driving experience.

3:24 AM
@HelkaHomba Toughie. I don't care about transportation too much, and I enjoy cooking so the meal thing isn't that big a deal. 3D printer would be nice but I think I'm gonna have to go with the cliche housemaid bot :P

@HelkaHomba I know that at least in England, groceries means food bought at a supermarket

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The best way to keep that from happening is to start getting driving experience early :P

okay :/ any tips on being focused?

the biggest advantage with a self-driving car is the ability to use your hands (computer) while driving

Heh, I didn't have a problem with being focused when I was just getting started driving. In fact, I disliked driving at first because there were too many variables (i.e., people), so I was very aware of everything. Now that I've been driving for six years or so, I'm much more relaxed.

3:38 AM
@quartata On the other hand, driving when you're shorter is harder. I remember when I was 15 and learning I could barely see the road compared to now

That's true. But even just driving around in a private parking lot a bit will be invaluable for teaching him about the physical feedback and feel of the car and staying focused. Even if he decides to wait to get his license/permit
(Obviously with a parent to teach him)
@NathanMerrill Dunno I'd feel nervous about having my hands off the wheel that much, even though a self driving car can probably do it better than me :PP

there is no wheel

Surely there is some kind of manual override though is what I meant
I haven't really been keeping track of self driving cars...

@Quill Installing redis seems hard. But here's a screenshot of the design changes I would PR:
idk if too bright

@Downgoat Wus dis?

3:44 AM
@quartata stacknews.org

@Downgoat ehhhh, I'm not really a fan....

:( ok

I was trying to avoid using white, but I suppose ice blue isn't bad

Q: Does (Should) instituting a bounty count as earning negative rep for the daily rep limit

Rohan JhunjhunwalaIn the current state does placing a bounty on a question count as earning negative rep on the daily rep limit? Currently I believe that one can only earn 200 rep daily. Thus, say user foo has 800 rep today. Then he places a bounty for 50 rep on question bar. Now he is at 750 rep. Now if his stell...

@Quill since the background of the icons are white, it felt wrong having a white box arounnd the icons. Perhaps no background and just any brighter color
what colors are you going for?

3:51 AM
I was just going for a colour scheme that avoids using massive amounts of white

how about a black and red color scheme with a goat and a -1

@quartata I think Google is the only one right now really without a wheel, but lots of other companies are moving towards fully or almost fully autonomous

A: Graduation Design Ideas

Helka HombaGuiding Principle/Color Scheme - Anything but blue All beta Stack Exchange sites have the same light blue design which I am kind of sick of, but it doesn't stop there. Looking at all the SE sites, I quickly categorized the non-beta computer-related sites as blue or not blue, based on their icon ...

@quartata a thing I made: github.com/The-Quill/StackNews

(even if I am ice blue...)

@HelkaHomba ice blue and beta blue are different

3:56 AM
Beta blue is the color of despair and crushed dreams

@Quill ^?

Is my design really that bad?

@Quill sorry if I implied that. It's fine but the white boxes very much bother me ._.
\o/ \o/ \o/ I hit 16k

@Downgoat yeah, okay. They kinda bothered me too

anyone can give link to repo of the Github thing which identifies languages? I want to make one for cheddar

4:14 AM
however: "We try only to add new extensions once they have some usage on GitHub. In most cases we prefer that extensions be in use in hundreds of repositories before supporting them in Linguist"

I read that but I'll do it anyway

4:32 AM
@ven not really sure what __0<\G,>| is supposed to mean..

No one wants quick shipping? strawpoll.me/10843492

it's not that big a deal
it solves itself by waiting, unlike the other things

Wait a few years and some of those things may exist :)
