Mathematica claims that it's using UTF-8, but ignores any non-ASCII character.
I can paste Unicode into the terminal if it's not running, but once I start it I can't.

1:54 AM
Yeah.... Unicode has always been weird in Mathematica

Its Unicode support is utterly broken anyway.

But but but, I need to make a subset symbol!

Use Julia. The REPL has LaTeX autocomplete for Unicode math symbols.

Julia doesn't generate new builtins while you're thinking of what program to write though.

That's true. That'll be in the next patch release.

1:59 AM
Also, have you tried identifying goat rotation with Julia? It's a mess...

I considered trying but decided against it...
Goats always make a mess though.

@AlexA. ಠ_ಠ
I'm going to try to make a Mathematica golfing language, name suggestions?

Mthmtca

@Vihan @LegionMammal978 is already working on one

@AquaTart oh
There could be 2?

2:08 AM
Eh

Might as well go for it. There are already a billion JavaScript-based golfing languages, I see no reason why there can't be multiple Mathematica-based languages.

@CoolestVeto someone should of said this about the JavaScipt golfing languages before like a 100 were made

I guess people figured if you were using Javascript anyway, you might as well make it a golfing language. It's already got most of the problems badly maintained golfing languages do.

Yeah, I see (c_,d) if that's what you're asking. "և"

CD is empty for me too.

@AquaTart I can't see 0x20.

@Dennis That's a space.
@Doorknob This is correct

I'd dispute that the pinky or thumb would be considered "up".
Maybe the pinky.

@El'endiaStarman Even the sequel. shudders

Evan Almighty? :P

2:38 AM
As much as I like Steve Carell, that movie was just bad.

I thought it wasn't terrible. :P I enjoyed it too.
I tend to enjoy a lot of movies that people think are bad.

Like Star Wars?

Sounds like Dennis is trying to stir up shit :P

Considering I have 115+ Star Wars novels, I'd say yeah.

That doesn't mean a thing. I enjoyed the 7 Harry Potter books. The movies were garbage.

2:40 AM
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I liked the books and the movies.

Speaking of which... @AlexA., did you ever end up seeing the The Martian movie?
("the The" looks kind of weird)

There's a Martian movie available to watch?

I specifically included two "the"s and you're still... :P

Not as weird if the

@Doorknob I try to be dependable.

@Dennis you don't like star wars? o_O

@EasterlyIrk No, he doesn't. The blasphemer...

2:44 AM
I don't. But since I signed up for better and for worse, I have to watch it anyway. >.<

> The blasphemer
@Dennis Why not?

He actually had to ask if The Force Awakens was any good.

@Dennis That's the true test of the vows, not all that "sickness and health" nonsense.

Dennis doesn't like star wars. Eh, it's okay. He has the freedom not too. He has that right in exchange for the right to be good at golfing. BUT ITS STAR WARS!!!!

2:46 AM
@EasterlyIrk s/ITS/IT'S/

@El'endiaStarman I haven't seen it yet. Is it any good?

Looks like Valve is adding a mobile authenticator requirement for the Community Market too

@Vihan but you don't correct "too"?

@Geobits I loved it. Dunno how much that tells you. :P

Better buy everything I can before I'm completely locked out from doing anything trading-related

2:47 AM
@Doorknob too?

> He has the freedom not too
typing that felt wrong -_-

J.J. Abrams deliberately went back to the origin to ensure that he wouldn't make the same sort of mistake that people think Lucas did with the prequels.

why didn't you just copy+paste?

more effort
I guess I haven't reached Enlightenment yet

@Doorknob I was just about to post that XKCD

2:49 AM
Since you all are so positive about Star Wars (and I feel like ranting), what's the worst movie you've ever seen?
This is my pick:
Marie and Bruce is a 2004 drama film from Holedigger and New Films. It is directed by Tom Cairns and stars Julianne Moore and Matthew Broderick. It was based on the 1978 play of the same name by Wallace Shawn and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2004. Although the film was well received and starred many major motion picture stars, it failed to receive distribution and remained obscure, until it was released on DVD in March 2009. The music was done by Mark degli Antoni of the band Soul Coughing. == Plot == The film is based on the somewhat whimsical and somewhat comic...

I saw only the most recent Star Wars. It was tolerable, but you shouldn't see it if you like things that make sense.

@Dennis That's really hard. There are a bunch of terrible movies :/
Maybe it should be "worst movie on IMDB's top 250"? That way it's more likely a few of us have seen it.

> worst movie on this list of best movies

Exactly :D

And I am back

2:54 AM
Lowest-ranked movie I've seen: Beauty and the Beast.

heh, when luser droog's avatar appeared for a second I was thinking "is that... is that old @Dennis? O_o"

@Geobits Not the worst, but I never got why Inception was so popular.

haha

@HelkaHomba Really? I liked Inception a lot.

@HelkaHomba I loved Inception. Then again, two of my favorite games are Portal and Antichamber...

2:56 AM
Can you suggest any good (ideally public domain) songs for a mining timelapse?
@El'endiaStarman Portal's fun

@Doorknob No, haven't seen it yet. I've been wary since you gave me info on it.

@SuperJedi224 how about this one?

@Geobits M was pretty bad, but given that it's from 1931, it isn't a fair fight...

@Doorknob ಠ_ಠ

@El'endiaStarman The J. J. Abrams Star Trek movies are the worst pieces of garbage.

2:57 AM
@SuperJedi224 I remember that when you upload a video to YouTube, you can pick a soundtrack from a bunch of free-to-use songs.

@AlexA. ah, okay. Yeah, it definitely disappointed me after having read the book first

The highest one on that list I actively disliked was Léon: The Professional.

@AlexA. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I enjoyed them.

@AlexA. (redacted)

They weren't true to the original series
Kirk was portrayed so incorrectly

2:58 AM
I dunno if you guys have noticed, but I never say movies are good or bad. Only that I enjoyed or did not enjoy them.

I love saying movies are good or bad. I speak objectively in all situations.

As for Star Trek, I've seen very few of the episodes, one of which was the worst according to basically everyone.

@El'endiaStarman That's because you haven't learned yet that your opinions are the only facts that matter.

This is so weird. I'm charging my portable speaker with my computer and have it plugged into the headphone jack, and when I move the scrollbar in chrome the speaker emits faint static noise.

@HelkaHomba That's me speaking softly into your computer

3:00 AM
chirp

Actually it seems to make noise anytime my mouse goes over something interactive

is your computer connected to a wireless network?

Your computer is anticipating making noise.

yes

it's probably interference from the wireless stuff
i discovered that happening with one of my old phones whenever i got a message

3:03 AM
But it's doing similar things in notepad. No internet interference there.

This may sound stupid, but... wireless mouse? Maybe your speaker is way too sensitive to interference.
I honestly can't see it being that sensitive, but you never know.

@Geobits Wireless, yes. Hmm. It does get a bit staticy when I click and move. Just weird that it gets way louder when I hover back and forth over the chat messages, for example

Time for an exorcism.
@PhiNotPi It's kinda hard to play Minecraft, develop a language, learn German, and develop circuitry all at once. :P
...oh cool. "Berg" in German is pronounced like "Berk" in English...which is the name of the Vikings' home in How to Train Your Dragon. Which is basically a little mountain sticking up out of water.

@El'endiaStarman Could you be a little more specific than linking the page? :P

I mean, I copy-paste a row of the table, and there are tabs in it.

There are no tab characters in the code. The only place a tab character would appear is in the button text for the tab character.

Anonymous
Are you copying the first row of ASCII?

@El'endiaStarman Then you should drop trying to learn German and developing a language, to focus your time on more productive things, like Minecraft and Tetris.

3:42 AM
@Mego No, fourth row. You'd probably get similar results for other rows though.

Anonymous
Hmm

I just c/p'd rows 2_ and 3_. Definitely tabs. Probably from the table, like suggested.

Anonymous
That's weird and it most definitely shouldn't be doing that

Anonymous
But that's not something I can control, I don't think

Probably not.

Looks like @AquaTart has a different target to sue.

Right now I'm implementing a red-black tree for CS extra credit.

Counterstrike: Extra Credit?

Anonymous
Not my monkeys, not my circus

@Geobits definitely that
I don't actually need the credit, the professor was like "I challenge any student to do this. I had like one student successfully implement red-black trees last semester. If you do, I'll give you extra credit or something."

Anonymous
3:52 AM
I don't remember what makes red-black trees special

Search, insertion, and deletion are O(log n) in the worst case at all times, basically.

Anonymous
That describes the performance but not the implementation

Implementation seems to be pretty complex.
A red–black tree is a kind of self-balancing binary search tree. Each node of the binary tree has an extra bit, and that bit is often interpreted as the color (red or black) of the node. These color bits are used to ensure the tree remains approximately balanced during insertions and deletions. Balance is preserved by painting each node of the tree with one of two colors (typically called 'red' and 'black') in a way that satisfies certain properties, which collectively constrain how unbalanced the tree can become in the worst case. When the tree is modified, the new tree is subsequently rearranged...

However, they fail to note an important caveat: if you just naively transpile bf to C and then compile it with optimizations, the C compiler will do even better

Didn't they kinda note that fairly early on?
> We use optimization level 0 (-O0) to make sure we benefit as little as possible from gcc’s optimization engine.

Anonymous
They noted that they didn't use gcc's optimizations

Anonymous
But they didn't mention that all of their optimizations are kinda pointless because gcc can do way better, if you just naively transpile and let gcc do all the hard work

Ah, gotcha.

Anonymous
4:36 AM
The madmen at the GNU project have spent the last 40 or so years fine-tuning gcc's optimizations. I think I'll defer to them :)

I wonder what it takes to get a job working on gcc.

Anonymous
Nothing

Anonymous
It's open source

Oh, cool.
Anyway, finished that article, and I think it's worth noting that you can use their tricks in near any language, like Python, for instance, where you won't get any benefit from a compiler.

Anonymous
Did you not realize that the GNU Project is FOSS?

Anonymous
4:40 AM
@El'endiaStarman While that's true, in many languages there are probably better tricks to use :P

I think I was thinking of IBM's C/C++ compilers.

Anonymous
Oh. For those, you have to have a CS degree and be fresh meat

Anonymous
Then you get stuck maintaining compilers that nobody uses

I remember one of the first times that I had any idea of the power of compilers was when I saw one factor something like x - x*y into x * (1 - y).
