Oh, right.

@Mego But non-mods can still do meta posts and everything. If 3 mods can do the actual moderating work of 4 just fine then a 4th is superfluous. (Sorry for suggesting we break up the dream team, hate on me etc.)

@Calvin'sHobbies By that logic, we only need 1.

Perhaps
Though, I'm not in favor of that because then it'll be much harder to get a hold of a mod

1 or 2 would be bad should any highly emotionally-charged issues come up.

What I'm saying is, there are more factors at play than just handling the moderation workload. Having multiple mods makes it easier to get more perspectives on situations.

Additionally, the number 1 engineering rule is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Our moderation team works very well, so there's no reason to change it IMO.

@Quill Woo #6! Though I frankly have no real interest in modding. (@Sp3 said the same once maybe?)

@Downgoat Sorted by election candidate scores

Yeah, and Peter too

@Quill Rep was waaay to much weight then...

That was for last time though, not sure if things have changed

Some of those are... a tiny bit misleading. It's literally impossible for moderators to earn the flag-related badges. :P

4:05 AM
Didn't peter enter the last election

The candidate scores are garbage.

@Doorknob yes and no. you can step down ;)

@Calvin'sHobbies I nominated Peter, but Peter declined after thinking about it for a few days

The candidate scores are as good at indicating candidate quality as A51 stats are at indicating site quality.

The candidate scores miss out on one vital detail: personality. Peter is incredibly helpful in the Sandbox and elsewhere on meta, but is much too abrasive (imo) to be a successful mod

@xnor Do you suggest any modifications to my sandboxed challenge to move it away from the question Peter linked to?

@Mego You'd think this site would like objective mod choosing criteria :P

Objective graduation criteria!

Disclaimer: The Candidates Score are in no way complete and binding judges of participation. They're simply a very broad way to categorise and rank you

@Doorknob Yep, have 15 q/day average on the 1st of November

Anonymous
> Disclaimer: The Candidate Scores are in no way useful. They're simply a very pointless way to attach numbers to usernames.

Well, if you don't like it, you can categorise yourself by rep

Anonymous
There is no database query that you can do that will say "these N people should be mods"

Candidate scores are worse than ranking by rep because they imply that they have value

Observation: Marky has some issues. Hypothesis: Several things might help. A larger data set (including more scripts of non-TNB language), decapitalization, and better tokenizing. Experiment: Lower-case everything, and add 300k lines of movie scripts and 150k lines of South Park scripts. Increase vocabulary by 40k words. Cook for three days; serve.

4:14 AM
@Geobits I look forward to see the result of this experiment.
The Nineteenth Byte is not the prime example of human language.
That would, of course, be South Park.

@El'endiaStarman @PhiNotPi If you guys were actually thinking of running to be a PPCG mod, I'd happily support you if you can show your dedication through consistent meta posts and such. :) Yes, our current mods are fine and friendly, but naming them the definitive winners already seems a bit presumptuous, and disheartening to other contenders.

Or, you could feed it Reddit's Top 100 books

@Calvin'sHobbies I basically have exactly 1 Meta post. :P
(Other than those in the Sandbox, of course.)

@Quill I thought about books, but the problem there is separating dialog from narrative. He needs dialog more than anything.

@Calvin'sHobbies I don't think anyone is naming the current mods the definitive winners.

4:16 AM
or he'll just be a really classy speaker

Especially not those two mods that nobody likes.
>_>

Who are those?

@AlexA. Are you sure you want to know?

Huh? What's that? Oh, no names. I wouldn't want to stir up trouble ;)

Shhh @Geobits, don't tell them

4:17 AM
@ThomasKwa yes ;-;

There's definitely not a coup happening.

I was considering running but I see no point. I actually think it would probably be bad if I won over a pro tem with more experience.

@Quill We should be rating the mods by best avatar ;)
(^ SO mod with best avatar)

That wouldn't be fair to non-Geobitses.

lol

4:18 AM
uh oh, if we're rating by phallicness, I don't stand a chance

( Í¡° ͜ʖ Í¡°)
Yeah, you willfully dropped your phallus rating.
6/10 to 2/10

I would try to drop it to 0/10 but then it would stop looking like a doorknob altogether

haha

It looks more mammary than phallic right now.

Waaaaaaaay more.

@quartata A: No, he should get something fresh.

how about we put the moderators in a pit and make them fight to the death

All of the pro-tems should change their usernames and avatars shortly before the election.

@Quill Not a bad idea. Keep going until there are only modSlots-2 alive, then elect to fill in those two spots.

or have a Nethack battle

I fully support this

Or just a code-golf challenge

Definitely not a code golf competition though because I'm the worst golfer among us by a large margin

Either Dennis or Martin would win if it were a golfing challenge.

4:24 AM
How about a quake match

@AlexA. What if it's about giant burritos?

@Calvin'sHobbies Burritos are tempting but they don't change my golfing abilities. :P

4:25 AM
oh, it's a seeded random thing

Anonymous
RAND() is kinda dumb in SQL

Misspelled Dennis sock?!
@Mego Yes it is.

Anonymous
It's equivalent to doing srand(0);return rand(); in C

In T-SQL (which SEDE uses), you can use sort by newid() with select top n.

irb(main):001:0> ['Martin Büttner', 'Dennis', 'Alex A.', 'Doorknob'].sort_by &:hash
=> ["Alex A.", "Dennis", "Martin Büttner", "Doorknob"]

I like how you accepted his answer without following his advice :P

somebody should write a language that takes game of life blocks as code

^

@AlexA. I followed 1/2 his advice and remove two re.subs

Anonymous
So thoughts on a new language I came up with an idea for, heavily influenced by Data and Jelly:

4:32 AM
Is it Jata? Or Delly?

Anonymous
Each line/block is a piece of code in a language given by a label

@Mego What's the benefit of using multiple languages?

I assume the label is a single byte?

Anonymous
The first line/block is code that runs the blocks in a specific order, with each output piped to the next block's input

Anonymous
@Downgoat For complex problems where different languages excel at different subproblems

4:33 AM
Hmm. At first thought, I think that whatever separators or labels you use would cost you more than you'd gain. For most challenges at least.

^

Anonymous
I don't mean for this to be designed specifically for golfing :P Though it would do decently if the syntax can be made golfy

If you do it, you have to use the name Rosetta, though. Looks like it's not taken on esolangs.org.

I was thinking Polyglob

I guess that works, too ;)

Or Shoulders

As in 'standing on the shoulders'? I like that.

Anonymous
The metaphor of dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants (Latin: nanos gigantum humeris insidentes) expresses the meaning of "discovering truth by building on previous discoveries". While it can be traced to at least the 12th century, attributed to Bernard of Chartres, its most familiar expression in English is found in a 1676 letter of Isaac Newton: If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. == Attribution and meaningEdit == The attribution to Bernard is due to John of Salisbury. In 1159, John wrote in his Metalogicon: Bernard of Chartres used to compare us to [puny...

Can someone answer this puzzle for me:

Persons A, B, and F approach you on the road and make the following statements:
A: If I am a Knight, then B is a Knave.
B: If that is true, then F is a Knave too.
what are each of A,B and F?

@Liam Yes.
Not necessarily correctly.

someone is trying to tell me I have the wrong answer and I want to make sure I'm not crazy

Anonymous
@Liam People. No need to be so discriminatory.

@ThomasKwa i take it there's also squaring, but it's pointless because you can multiply and parens are not allowed?

@Mego ? is persons discriminatory?

4:53 AM
@xnor There is also squaring. I guess that could help, because X^2^2 is one byte shorter than XXXX

Is it assumed that one can only be a Knight or a Knave and not anything else (aka do we have the law of the excluded middle)?

@ThomasKwa Oh, I didn't think of successive squares

only knight or knave. normal Knight/Knave puzzle rules apply

@AlexA. :D

@ThomasKwa Marky gave that exact same answer :o

4:54 AM
A = Knight, B = Knave, F = Knight works.
A = Knave, B = Knight, F = Knave or Knight works.

k so maybe I wrote a really bad puzzle and am just too slow to see that

There's not enough information to resolve it further

Can A be a knave though?

No wait

if he is a knave then the negation of his statement is true

4:56 AM
What does B mean by "If that is true"

which is ( I am a Knight) AND NOT (B is a Knave)

The entire statement by A, or just (B is a Knave)
?

If that is true ---> If the person who said it is a knight

Okay
Let me re-analyze

Is it just if or iff?

4:57 AM
if

@Mego too bad

A = Knight => B = Knave => F = Knight
A = Knave => B = Knight or Knave... umm.

A cannot be a knave

No wait

I don't see why not.

4:58 AM
A cannot be a knave

p=>q

Suppose A is a knave

if p is false
then the statement is true
and a knave cannot make a true statement

Looks like I missed a big discussion about the potential mod election.
2

Suppose A is a Knave
Then the statement (A is a Knight) => (B is a Knave) is false.
Then A is a Knight (think of the truth table). Contradiction.
