Hello
Is anyone on?

Yes
I am in awe at how sparsely v8 and node.js are documented...
Question: anyone have least bit of experience with v8/node.js internal
If I create a node::CreateEnvironment() how to interpret that as a Local<Context>

@MartinEnder Ah well. You can just tell yourself you were too focused on being a helpful mod to think of trolling :P

Q: Do people in non-English-speaking countries code in English?

DamovisaI've heard it said (by coworkers) that everyone "codes in English" regardless of where they're from. I find that difficult to believe, however I wouldn't be surprised if, for most programming languages, the supported character set is relatively narrow. Have you ever worked in a country where Eng...

So... How do people in non-English-speaking countries code in English?

Non-English-based programming languages are computer programming languages that, unlike better-known programming languages, do not use keywords taken from, or inspired by, the English vocabulary. == Prevalence of English-based programming languages == There has been an overwhelming trend in programming languages to use the English language to inspire the choice of keywords and code libraries. According to the HOPL online database of languages, out of the 8,500+ programming languages recorded, roughly 2,400 of them were developed in the United States, 600 in the United Kingdom, 160 in Canada, and...

@HWalters wat
@HWalters submit to SROMG with context please?

@Qwerp-Derp Your example using the recurring digits isn't clear (probably would read clearly with merely a reorganization; or something suggesting that this is a recurring decimal digit rather than a recurring fraction or something)
Also probably need an example with multiple digits (1.7<17> I suppose is allowed?)
@DestructibleWatermelon That was just meant to be an amusing, and a blank version of what you submitted

@HWalters and?
I fail to see the relevance
this is a SROMG on the site

why no link
there we go

@DestructibleWatermelon You're trying too hard to bind this to SROMG; this is more bound to you and the comments in TNB by mınxomaτ

Which was started by minxomat commenting on SROMG

You're still doing it

Q: Equal out bracket types

Dirk ReichelOut of THIS question. Given is a random string. It may have brackets (or not). If there are any brackets then change the string like this: Outer most ones are () inside of () should be [] inside of [] should be {} inside of {} should be <> inside of <> will be () again (cycles) all other chars...

@NewMainPosts I hope they edit it. It looks like a great challenge sans the language restriction

They did.

Q: Generate n-ary numbers

MegoA secondary number is a positive integer whose prime factors (without multiplicity) are all less than or equal to its square root. 4 is a secondary number, because its only prime factor is 2, which equals its square root. However, 15 is not a secondary number, because it has 5 as a prime factor, ...

@Downgoat is there a particular name for the process of writing stdlib in the language you're writing? e.g. writing cheddar stdlib in cheddar

How do I check the serial number of a computer programatically?

I don't think it works that way

There's no canonical specification for serial numbers.
So you don't.

darn
that would have been nice

2:03 AM
You can fingerprint the PC by using some hardware IDs. That's how many DRM software works.

well, not actually what I have in mind
I just want to procedurally generate stuff

That's the closest to what you asked.

@DestructibleWatermelon Are you trying to inventory machines? Just identify them?

I'm trying to make like, an identicon map thing for a game

So why would generating a GUID stored on each machine be a bad idea? (And would you really want this per machine or account?)

2:08 AM
@ConorO'Brien Self-hosting, eating your own dog food, bootstrapping

Anonymous
(though the first and last typically refer to a language compiling itself)

@HWalters IDK, I just feel like this would be better for some reason

If this is an online game (sounds like it), closest thing you have to a SN on every machine is a MAC; however, though this is in principle unique it's not actually guaranteed to be

Well, I wasn't really thinking of online

(And I suppose in principle there could be non-MAC'd machines, if I could find my modem somewhere)

2:13 AM
Any of the checking occurs on the computer itself
hmmmm, I guess it isn't really necessary

@Mego isn't bootsrapping the same as booting?

@ConorO'Brien No... bootstrapping is the name for writing libraries in a language using your own language, based on the idiom "pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps"; it's not the same as booting

booting does originate from the term bootstrapping though...

@HWalters oh, fantastic. wikipedia lied to me

Well, yeah, I guess it could refer to booting... but its use here is distinct

2:20 AM
also citation needed!

Wait... sorry, no... bootstrapping's where you write your compiler using your own language

Anonymous
Booting computers nowadays is often done using bootstrapping. You have small, hardware-specific code (the BIOS) that runs slightly more general code (the bootstrapper) that loads the OS and runs it

@ConorO'Brien best practice?

@DestructibleWatermelon hm?
@Mego oh, cool

@flawr Hmm, indeed, that is interesting...

2:27 AM
We've moved on from BIOS, it's now the UEFI

Anonymous
@GabrielBenamy Still the same concept, but a bit more advanced. I was simplifying the situation for a quick explanation.

fair enough

Anonymous
The main difference is that UEFI takes the place of both the BIOS and the bootloader (which I accidentally called the bootstrapper)

is the ifndef to make sure it isn't loaded on each inclusion, but only on the first?

@ConorO'Brien Yes; those are inclusion guards.

Anonymous
@ConorO'Brien Only on the first inclusion within each compilation unit (aka source file)

Anonymous
If I had a.h, b.h which #included a.h, and main.c which #included both a.h and b.h, I'd be in trouble, unless a.h had a header guard

oh, I see

Anonymous
The preprocessor is very very dumb. It can't do anything except for find-and-replace

Anonymous
2:54 AM
#include "file.h" replaces that line with the entire contents of file.h

I find non-SCU to be pretty relaxed for C/++. No more fixed order for function declarations. You also don't have to worry about include ordering at all.

Well, it can do pattern matching and math

Anonymous
@HWalters It doesn't do pattern matching. It can only do "take this symbol and replace it with this symbol". And it also doesn't do math - that's the compiler.

Actually, no, it can do both

Anonymous
About all the preprocessor can do is count up to 200 and then complain that it doesn't know any more numbers

Anonymous
2:56 AM

That's what chaos and order are for, they bring static computations and templating to the PP: chaos-pp.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/chaos-pp/order-pp/example/…
Non constant math is still beyond the preprocessor though.

@Mego Give me a few moments for some culled down examples

Anonymous
patiently waits for #define add(a,b) (a+b)

Oh, you'll be waiting a long time then... that's not how you do PP math
I was going to start with pattern matching... want math first?
Math is done using #if (expression)
Not #define
(Though you can use macros in #if, #elif; it's those constructs that do the math)

Anonymous
Ok yeah you can do very simple arithmetic in the context of a preprocessor #if

3:01 AM
You can do multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, modulo, xor
Reducing the numbers isn't easy but perfectly possible (because you can do these things)

Question: is it good idea to use const std::string& for field in C++? Initalizing it with foo(foo) syntax feels unnatural so I feel like I am doing something wrong

Both chaos/order and P99 do some pretty ordinary integer math just with the PP. There's nothing really hard about it.

It doesn't look like a "call" to add(10,15) expanding to 25 for sure

Anonymous
@Downgoat Yes, much more so than using const char*.

> Who tunes in to watch people get along? -- some game

Anonymous
3:03 AM
Ok so I exaggerated a bit when insulting the C preprocessor. It's still not nearly as intelligent as a compiler.

@HWalters Well yes, if you would actually look at the example, you can build complex operations with basic choas atoms: chaos-pp.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/chaos-pp/order-pp/example/…

@mınxomaτ Exactly... but it's fun to hack these up from scratch (chaos-pp isn't doing anything magical)

also another question: I know I can add a folder to lookup in things like: #include "foo.h" with -I. But is there a way to add a folder to lookup for things such as #include <foo.h>?

Meh... a bit lazy... here is a cpp bottles of beer program that does math

Anonymous
@Downgoat Uhh you're a bit confused. #include "foo.h" looks in the current directory first before going to system directories. #include <foo.h> only looks in system directories. You can specify additional locations included in the "system directories" with -I.

3:08 AM
huh oh :|

...and here is a simple pattern matcher

And as a bonus, play tic tac toe against the preprocessor

@Dennis At least Dedekind cuts are immediately somewhat comprehensible...

3:23 AM
Trying to extract properties is a pain though.

Yeah, was trying to figure out what the set would be for the real number 0
Turns out, finding the set for the integer 0 is hard
(Natural 0 is just the empty set, of course)

3:35 AM
@Downgoat pls can you restart the freaking ppcg server

@Dennis BTW, is there a way to run pure C preprocessor programs on TIO?

Not sure. How do you do that on a local machine?

You can use g++ with g++ -E -P; or you can use cpp (preferably with -P)... and the output is just what you want
On TIO it actually goes past this if I try a C++ program and inject -E -P flags (-P is just to make it pretty)

Compiler flags are planned but not yet implemented. In the meantime, you can always compile things from tio.run/nexus/bash.

@Flp.Tkc I added a permalink button, just for you :-) Let me know if you have any problems with it.

3:48 AM
Hmmm... might need a file to do this (pipes; both of | and <(...) forms; don't work)

That's not a problem. You can create files.

Just found that out... they don't stick around forever do they?

No, everything is wiped when the session ends.

So one last response to drill in that, yes, the C preprocessor does do math

4:10 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I just did this morning?

4:20 AM
Can any C++ expert please help me find entry point in here

@Downgoat Guessed it was in something with main in the name (in case the authors decided to be nice)... opened it up, and lo and behold... it's node_main.cc

Oh .______.
now I feel stupid for not figuruiring that out >_>

hey, I was logging into my server via SSH, but it no longer works (and is asking me for a password). Does doing ssh-keygen (while logged into the server) reset the ssh keys to log into it?

It shouldn't because ssh-keygen generates into ~/.ssh/id_rsa by default but the server uses ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

hmmm...well, I appeared to have locked myself out of my server
and I have no idea how :/

4:28 AM
don't feel bad, I've done it more than once :P

oh wait, no I didn't
this is odd...when I initially ssh-ed into it, it worked just fine. But then, I ssh-ed again, and it tried using an old IP address I had for the domain
but ssh-ing using the new ip works

@Downgoat still down

@Downgoat grep is your friend

5:46 AM
hey, how do I clear the "cache" of domains to ip addresses in linux?
oh, it is called cache -.-
I tried a bunch of words in google, but the one I try here is the right one :P

Linux doesn't usually do OS-level caching. Is this for a browser?

nah, it still has the wrong ip when pinging it as well

chrome://net-internals/#dns
in chrome
Oh, huge ping today....
@NathanMerrill That's probably your ISP

DNS changes can take a while to propagate.

ok, I'll wait then
my server is waiting for a specific domain, so simply hitting it through the IP won't work
@Dennis you are using Let's Encrypt, right?

5:52 AM
@Dennis Actually they don't. DNS changes are almost instantaneous today. The only issue that remains are misconfigured DNS caches usually run by ISPs. A good network with a good nameserver (like CloudFlare) will see no delay with any DNS change.
One can usually clear the ISP's cache by re-authing the router (turn off/on again) if you have a dynamic IP from your ISP.

I'm using internetbs with digitalocean's nameserver

That makes sense. When I set up a new sub-domain, it works immediately. But if I change it...
@NathanMerrill Yes, I do.

@NathanMerrill DO runs name servers? Are you sure you are not using IBS's NS?

yes. I was specifically following DO's instructions, and they said to use their nameservers
ns1.digitalocean.com
ns2.digitalocean.com
ns3.digitalocean.com

Oh indeed. Well, I don't know DO's cache times. CF is instant (still the ISP issue though).
Hah, DO's NS are just CF with a skin :D
ns1.digitalocean.com is anounced by walt.ns.cloudflare.com.
Then it's your ISP :(

5:56 AM
ok. well, that just means that its time for me to go to sleep
and hopefully I've got a website running tomorrow :)

Or add your domain/IP pair to /etc/hosts until it's working.

ah, that would work as well

TIL you can use Google 2FA with OpenSSH.

Seriously? Wow.

That's so awesome. How have I lived without this.

6:01 AM
does it support all of the different methods?
like, I use the "enter this time-limited 6 digit code"

Yes.
It's standard compliant, you don't have to use the Google thing.

what's included in the standards?

The server prints a QR code to scan into the console. (For setup, after that it asks for the OTP code on SSH login).
@NathanMerrill I mean that all RFC 2FA compliant apps can use this SSH extension.
There are companies like CloudFlare that require you to store the secret random seeds on a third party service (Authy). That violates the standard and locks you in one app.

@mınxomaτ i tries but problem is a lot of files (patticularially test ones) have int main(int argc.... Within them so yeah :/

Most of them are test* folders. Exclude them :)

6:12 AM
Easy in theory, much more difficult when you have no idea how to zsh glob :P

so, the tutorial I'm reading says that Let's Encrypt certificates expire after 90 days. That seems short. Is it?

AFAIK the nice thing about Let's Encrypt is that you set up auto-renew scripta

@NathanMerrill DOs tutorial does tell you how to setup renew as a cron job.

oh I know
I just thought that the standard expiration was around 1 year or so

Not for free certificates.

6:23 AM
ah, I imagine that price does factor into that :)
ah, my website works!
well, the IP cache is cleared
it doesn't actually work I get a 502

@Dennis Before LE, we had StartSSL et al. These gave out one free cert per owner and they lasted one year.

I'm a bit confused about 3/40 = (0).(075)() => (0).()(075) = 75/999 = 25/333

Yeah, I should put the decimals in, but that is 0.075075075...

9:44 AM
Oh

Should I change the brackets to be clearer?

Anonymous
So what about something that terminates (e.g. 1/5). Would you do it as (0).(2)() => (0).()(2) = 0.02 = 2/100 = 1/50?

Anonymous
I think just having the decimal value without the brackets before turning it into a fraction would help a lot

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I just wanted to know what was the reason for "retiring" (if not personal). I'm not 100% certain it would bring "hard feeling" at all, there are varying reasons someone might do such a thing (e.g. focusing on family more by removing an unneeded and time-wasting routine for some time, taking a break from code-golf etc.), and I can't think of a sad reason right now. More specifically, I don't think the probability of that bringing bad memories back is anywhere over 10% IMO.

too late
it's already bruoght some back

that sounds like an awful idea
why would you even write rm -rf / --norecursive

reverse makes it sound like you're reversing each of the pieces (so (0).(14)(15) would become (0).(41)(51)) - that would make an interesting challenge, but it's not the right terminology imo

But I probably won't because you shouldn't be spoiled

@KritixiLithos The numerator and denominator both divide by 5
Nah, I've played some of Antichamber

That makes sense

To be honest, I tried it on a cracked version, but I didn't finish it there, because the cracked version doesn't save your progress
Although that does mean I shouldn't be spoiled on everything after the second gun

Q: Swap out some periodic and non-periodic parts

Sherlock9In the decimal representation of every rational number p/q, you have a periodic tail, a non-periodic head, and a section before the decimal point in the following format: (before decimal point).(non-periodic)(periodic) Some examples include: 1/70 = 0.0142857... = (0).(0)(142857) 10/7 = 1.428...

@Mego Oh, is it? Ah, I'll watch your streams another time then :D
@zyabin101 What's RRT?

Maybe I'll stream a horribly awful FEZ playthrough

Or being really rusty at Super Metroid
