Everyone, please do not feed the trolls. It makes it more difficult for everyone.

Oh jeez, the flag dialog on that page covers literally half my screen. >_>

Good lord, now it's 41 comments.
@Doorknob Could you just temporarily lock it so people can cool down?

It's like someone dropped a logical inconsistency into a pool of programmers
I'm fairly certain it's deliberate trolling but our responses aren't casting us in a good light as a community

It looks like the discussion has become more productive recently.

oooh drama
and that used to be my avatar on a few sites o_O
noo, I was reading the comments, almost done, saw two new ones, all deleted

12:39 AM
You aren't missing out on anything.
5

wow, those were some quick stars

Probably from people who already wasted time reading the comments

I found it to be a rather interesting discussion
it sounded a lot like a political debate

You're lucky if you get to hear meaningful political debates...

Take another from me :)

12:43 AM
I believe the word you're looking for is "mudslinging"

@trichoplax lol

what is it about this room that attracts all the mods?

It seems to attract all of everyone - it's a very busy room

Anyone know anyone on Spanish Language?

Lots of the mods in here were regulars before they got their powers

12:45 AM
I wanna try to revive that room to practice my Spanish
@trichoplax that makes sense, but there's you, a mod on Computer Graphics, Zizouz on OS and some others

We're a chatroom of immigrants. Always have been.

@Geobits lol

I was a regular here in TNB before Computer Graphics was even a site - I just happen to have been here long enough to have helped start a new site that made it to beta, and for some reason they made me a mod

can some of you migrate to AU and get 3k rep? We really do need help with the review queues and you all seem pretty active
@trichoplax "some reason" that's reassuring ;p

@Zacharee1 I think it was somewhat evidence based, but not as rigorous as a graduated site election...

12:48 AM
heh

@Zacharee1 I, well... kinda hang around here

@Zizouz212 well you seem known here, so I'm gonna count you

You may as well count him. I mean, wynaut?

I just haven't been around for a long time because, you know, if I hang around, I'll never get off
And with my last year of school coming about... Probably not a good idea :)

I think that's another reason - people wander in here accidentally and then get hooked

12:51 AM
sounds like AU

Yep, that happened to me too. TNB is kinda addicting...

we have some people even weirder than I am (I know right?)

Speaking of which... school is so draining -_-

@El'endiaStarman Right. Like Java is kinda verbose.

Java is stupid verbose

12:52 AM
Bit of MC anyone? helkahomba.mcserver.ws (@DJMcMayhem)

Ugh, do you know how annoying java is?

@Zizouz212 oh god yes

@HelkaHomba I'd send Minibits your way, but he's headed toward bed instead.

@Zizouz212 learning it right now. I wanna go back to Arduino :(
@HelkaHomba what version?

@Zizouz212 I know exactly how annoying it is. Which is more annoying than a delicious meal, but less annoying than most users in the room make it out to be ;)

12:53 AM
@Zacharee1 I'm kind of happy that I have Computer Science first period though, and since they used the room as a storage room last year, there's a couch where I just plop up and sleep :P
Except for now I have to do the work at home...

aww

No.

I want a couch :(

No..
My couch.

@Zizouz212 true that

12:54 AM
o_O

We live in a world where people are giving away couches constantly

I answered a simple question 20 minutes ago on SO, and it's now my 2nd highest voted answer
What is wrong with the world

Should I be the bad guy here and say that no matter how draining you think school is, you haven't seen anything until you get a full time job?

@Zacharee1 1.10.2

@Zizouz212 people are happy someone had the patience to answer what should have just been Googled

12:55 AM
@Geobits Haha, is that supposed to be optimistic?

@HelkaHomba starting up

@Zizouz212 Dunno. My highest voted answer on SO isn't all that great imo.
@Zizouz212 Nope. Not at all ;)

Seriously though. Explaining what // gets me 8 votes in 20 minutes.

@Geobits I merely have a part-time job (that's basically janitorial work) and I can definitely attest that it's draining.

There's almost a pun in there

@Zizouz212 people are happy someone had the patience to answer what should have just been Googled

@trichoplax I see it :)

@Zizouz212 I've got +93 for using modulus, so I know how you feel. I didn't even really explain mine at all.

My highest answer is 26... -.-

My only ever SO question scored higher than any of my PPCG challenges, despite putting much more effort into them

@trichoplax effort and rep don't seem to correlate

12:58 AM
Yeah... Traffic changes everything. I could only dream of getting 8 votes on open source nowadays

Gone are the heady days of private beta...
Same on CG

I can write a full out answer... 2 up votes. And I feel happy from that

If you want I can join so you get more downvotes.

lol, good luck :)
Oh that reminds me! Meta

Good luck? Nah, I only need 125, how hard could that be? :P

1:02 AM
Ugh... Super important meta post gets 4 up votes... Does that mean people actually saw it?

You can see the "viewed" count at the top right

80? I bet of you half of those are Art and I...

Not sure if those are unique but it's a guide

This is depressing

They're unique

1:04 AM
CG is similarly slow. Someone came into the chatroom today and asked more or less "am I allowed to talk in here?"

IIRC they're semi unique. Views from the same IP will count again after 15 minutes, or something along those lines.

Googlebot 1, Bingbot, Googlebot 2, ...

@Zacharee1 They're not. It's smart enough to not count if you click refresh like a maniac...

ahh

Huh. Apparently my username on OS is Bits. I don't really remember doing that o_O

1:05 AM
lol

Do usernames ablate over time?

Apparently

I'm not surprised you don't remember it if it's from back when you were cycling your username at high speed :P

So there must be other bits somewhere around the world then...
Now quick! Each bit will be a golf course. Whoever can golf to all the bits fastest wins!

I've got quite a few odd names floating around the network. I just don't remember this particular one.

1:08 AM
Ooh, I wonder if there's been something with Djikstra's algorithm on code golf...

I seem to remember...

Pfft. Dijkstra's is A* for lazy people.

Can't find a challenge though - might have just seen it in an answer

Found one. But it seems to use matrices... I'm sure I can twist it up :P

@Geobits "lazy people" - you mean programmers...?

1:11 AM
No, I mean lazy even for programmers.

@Zizouz212 We have lots based on networks, so it's hard to come up with something that doesn't end up being a camouflaged duplicate. People (Peter) will point this out in the sandbox though, so you can adjust it until it's different

Hmm... I'll think of something, hopefully. But by the time that happens, 6 to 8 weeks will have probably passed

Just so long as it's before November 1st.

Why November 1st?

1:14 AM
november first is election day isn't it

Maybe leave it until after you finish school. When you're in work you'll have plenty of spare time for PPCG

I thought that was the 8th?

November 1st is 6 to 8 weeks away.

wait
I'm an idiot, carry on

@trichoplax After school will be summer work, and than uni :)
Speaking of which, good luck with elections :P

1:15 AM
I have elections?

Well, for ye 'mericans

Oh them. I don't get to vote for their leaders...

@Zizouz212 we're all going to die

OMG!

I want to move to New Zealand

@Downgoat Microwave for the win

Its only one line

I'm going to promote your language.

So is it a sergeant now?

how do you push items to the stack?

@HelkaHomba If you want to try it out, my server is mc.x-p-w.tk. Right now, I need to sleep (or try to anyway)

@ConorO'Brien You can duplicate with :. To push a zero just do ::^

Wat.... There are microwave pizzas now apparently...

I golfed the CMC down a bit: pastebin.com/txDt2aj4

@Downgoat Not good ones...

@Downgoat As long as they haven't gone bitter, crush them over a dessert - maybe yoghurt or custard or icecream

@trichoplax good idea, Downturtle trichoplax :P

While searching main for Djiksta's algorithm, I stumbled upon this comment:

Try searching for Dijkstra instead ;)

Wow - that's much more effective...

Yeah, my mind rebels at the thought of consecutive jk too :P

1:39 AM
I actually noticed you spelt it that way earlier, and just assumed it was a typo...

I spelled it dji at first, then edited it lol

I missed that. I also missed that Google corrected my spelling when I looked it up on Wikipedia

damn autocrrect

I'm sure I used to know how to spell more things

I doubt it. You probably spell things like colour, flavour, and yoghurt.

1:44 AM
What colour is aluminium flavour yoghurt?

Grey :P

Ha! I knew it
Stars?? I'm not the only one who's overtired then...

Well it's not like I can have a cup of Earl Gray.

Is it too expensive after the thumb tax?

Oh geez. That's a new low :P
Besides, tax on tea is no big deal. Just pitch it overboard.

I forgot how disgustingly OP Choice Specs Rotom Wash can be

@quartata Is that a sentence?

Ah, good ol Rotom

Yes it was.

I can't parse it. Not sure if tired or out of touch

@Geobits Oh no did something happen to him in XY?

No, he's there. Just haven't played with one in a while
God forbid they give it a mega evolution. There'd be no need for anything else :)

@NathanMerrill I added to your meta question a link and description of Peter's answer. By excluding it, you created the false impression that more people were for allowing non-programming languages, when it is by far the most-supported answer against them.

@WheatWizard is it Wise or wise in a sentence ? I.e., is it always capitalized

Q: Print some JSON

Nathan MerrillThis challenge is straightforward, but hopefully, there are plenty of avenues you can approach it: You need to print/return a valid JSON object of at least 15 characters, not counting unessential whitespace. Your program should work without any input. In the interest of clarity, a JSON object ...

I give up on writing a Malbolge answer on this one… TT_TT
I believe there is a short (<50B) one

isn't there an online text -> malbolge covnerter? :P

@ConorO'Brien I would think it is always capitalized. Language names are in general.

2:07 AM
@WheatWizard ah, okay. thanks!

That’d be like submitting ++++++…+++++.-----… to a challenge in Brainfuck

I managed to print a { and got stuck trying to print a " from there because I picked the wrong setup
But it’d be smooth sailing from there! You can easily print like {"::::::::: because the accumulator doesn’t change, and changing the accumulator is the only hard thing in Malbolge.
Okay, that and looping. Of course. those are the only things it does.

@Mego Oh, my bad. I had it sorted by active, but I thought it was sorted by votes
I thought that that was the top answer
thank you :)

Q: Windows 10/Linux mint 18 internet problems

cracingbozo7I recently installed Linux mint 18 alongside windows 10, and I did some grub editing and downloaded some games and stuff like that. When I later booted back into Windows, I couldn't connect to the internet, all it said was "could not connect - no connections available" I have scored the internet...

Can we start answering these questions with the shortest Google query, in bytes, that solves their problem? >_>;

maybe we should just make a language that shortens a lmgtfy link

I want to know how the internet scored though.

Anonymous
@Geobits Over 9000, naturally.

Maybe we could start asking people how they found the site. If we have challenges that often show up in searches for computer help, maybe we could add a notice to the top of them

2:28 AM
Maybe. I can't see how you'd find this place from a Win10 Mint grub internet issue though.

What I've seen happen a lot is: 1) Post a poorly-worded question on SO. 2) It gets closed. 3) Start posting the same question on every other tech-related SE site, sometimes using different accounts.

Anonymous
I suspect that a lot of these obviously-off-topic questions come from bots who copy-and-paste questions from other sources (Quora, Reddit, other forums) in hopes of getting enough reputation to start spamming without immediately getting banned.

A quick search for windows linux mint using site:codegolf.stackexchange.com does return quite a few results...

Anonymous
@trichoplax The only problem is, most of those "users" (I use quotes because I doubt there's a real person behind many of the accounts) don't respond to comments.

Good point

2:31 AM
@trichoplax Well, sure, but then again searching it without site: shows nothing in the first few pages at all.

yeah. It's still a mystery to me

Anonymous
If the user can't figure out how to read the FAQ for sites and decide which site is appropriate for the question, I highly doubt they'd read Google's search documentation to learn how to use the site: feature.

This means we should flag any obviously off-topic question as spam.

@Mego I think the point was more that the keywords do show up on the site, not that they're specifically using site: to find it.
But I can't imagine anyone would scroll to the 934th page of regular google results to find us from a query without site:

Yes that was what I was checking. I agreed that it seemed unlikely those words would give a result here, but then I checked and found they did.
I think I'm optimistically looking for a logical explanation for irrational people. I should stop

2:36 AM
I like skeptics.se for this reason. They have a Blatantly off topic close reason :)

Reminds me of a teacher where I went to school, who used to put up a hand written sign in the summer saying "NO WASPS"

@HelkaHomba I'd love to later (in a few hours)

@trichoplax I guess my cultural bias is showing - all but a handful of my teachers were female.

If in C#, I have a class A than implements an interface B, I should be able to do B foo = new A(), right?

Anyone here familiar with rigging in Blender using rigify?

@trichoplax Woah, weird. It doesn't include the name.

@El'endiaStarman it does, but it's white. hover over your reply

Sure it does ;)

@El'endiaStarman It does. Just in white. I didn't realise it was invisible because my own messages have a turquoise background

Hmm... A graphics-oriented site has white text on a white background.

@ConorO'Brien Holy crap, that works. Highlighting didn't.

I don't think I'll be looking for answers there.

@El'endiaStarman weiiird

@El'endiaStarman It's because it's an image with transparency, not text.

@trichoplax Odd. Mine are light blue.

What colour do you see Downgoat's avatar?

2:46 AM
Turquoise and light blue both seem to be acceptable names for me.

@trichoplax Cyan?
I think of turquoise as having more green than the text box, but ymmv :)

Anonymous
I'm colorblind, so I'm going to go with "whatever shade of blue that color is"

I guess I'd call my message background light cyan

Colors are stupid subjective.

Turquoise
@Geobits IMO cyan is way lighter

2:48 AM
I think of cyan as being more saturated, not lighter.

Anonymous
Clearly the correct color name is #e3f8ff

It's an awkward conversation to have among programmers, where cyan means equal parts green and blue. To make matters worse the root of "cyan" means blue

Anonymous
blueide and happiness?

@trichoplax In addition to being a programmer, I used to work on a newspaper press, so cyan is a bit weird.

Q: Why does rigify generate my rig so small?

Ashwin GuptaI'm a beginner with Blender, I'm trying to use it to create some basic 3d character models for my program. 2:50 AM
@AshwinGupta That definitely sounds a better fit for blender's scope than computer graphics'

@trichoplax yeah I'd say so. Probably just stick with Blender SE then.

It's best not to cross post anyway - wait and see what response you get from one site first

Anonymous
When in doubt, go with the site with the tighter scope

Yup. I agree w/ both of your points.

2:53 AM
Blender.se covers use of blender, whether programming or not. Computergraphics.se is for researchers or programmers, so more questions about code and algorithms

TIL the closest color to SE chat's message background is categorized under white

Right, this is more about blender-specific modeling tools, so Computer graphics is actually the wrong site.

@ASCII-only Did you measure just one pixel's colour? The chat background is mottled
@AshwinGupta Indeed. You chose wisely

@trichoplax The message background isn't

Thank you master. May the force be with you.

2:55 AM
@trichoplax The message background isn't

@ASCII-only So it isn't. I had to tip my screen to tell...

I don't care what that tool says, it isn't "Lily White" in any sense :/

It is white.
Gimp says its 255, 255, 255

That's other people's messages, right? It isn't calling the light cyan Lily White?

No, it's calling #e3f8ff lily white

2:57 AM
no, other people's messages are white according to Gimp.

^^ The blue of your own message.

@Geobits exactly.

A tool to avoid then...

@trichoplax No, that's actually called Lily White by Wikipedia or Crayola or Resene
Downgoat's avatar is close to turquoise I think

2:59 AM

I've never seen a Lily that far off white unless it was orange

Downgoat's avatar is Scooter, whatever the hell that means.

@AshwinGupta It isn't hard to tell other people's messages are white...

Mine is the much more reasonably named Azure :)

@ASCII-only yeah thats what I was saying. But then what are they arguing about?
Hold on, im checking miens

3:03 AM
Yours is clearly TARDIS blue >_>

@AshwinGupta The color of your own messages

@Geobits Ah yes, that would be 100% correct.
@ASCII-only oh woops.

@AshwinGupta The background of your own messages is what I call light cyan, what Geobits calls blue, and what some tool calls Lily White

I called it light blue, tyvm :P

hm, definitely gonna go with blue here.
I honestly am terrible with colors.

Anonymous

wait wait wait. Are you people trying to tell me that this Name that Color Site has a name for all 255^3 color options?

Anonymous
Granted, I have a natural disadvantage :P

@AshwinGupta No, they find the closest match based on some sort of distance.

@AshwinGupta I'm guessing it just picks the nearest named colour

@trichoplax oh okay, that makes more sense.

3:06 AM
The small box in the tool shows the actual named color.

@Mego colorblind? R/G?

Penguins don't see colors

@Geobits oh. Well who knew?

Anonymous
Red-green colorblindness is a misnomer. There are a lot of different types of color vision deficiency.

@AshwinGupta (it's not true)

3:07 AM
@Geobits like I said earlier: who knew?
@Mego yeah. I know but R/G is most common.

Penguins see more colours than we do. To a penguin we're all colourblind

Anonymous

Anonymous
@AshwinGupta But "red-green colorblindness" doesn't actually mean anything, because there are multiple types of color vision deficiency that are lumped together as "red-green colorblindness", despite being not all that similar.

@Mego oh thats interesting. Now I'm checking myself for color-blindness =P
oh thank god. I'm able to see color.

They made sure I could before they let me loose on aircraft wiring.
Go figure.
The worst part is that roughly 99.7663% of our wires were white anyway.

Anonymous
3:12 AM
@Geobits Is this the part where you find out that none of the wires were white, and you're actually suffering from a rare form of CVD?

Haha, no. Turns out using labels is much better when you have 30+ wires in a bundle.
"You mean the red wire?" "No, I mean the one labeled LR2246"

Hmm. I can't decide whether I'd like that or hate it.

you'd really have to have the right group. Either a group that is able to laugh off the stress, or a group that is super focused
but don't try to mix those groups

I assume this is on some sort of "not easy" difficulty though. Hopefully?
Because if the game just throws you into that straight off, screw that.

Would this make a good challenge? Write a polyglot that outputs the string Parent in one language, and the string Child in a language which is implemented in the parent language.

For example, you could write a C/CPython polyglot that outputs Parent in C and Child in Python

Self-implemented languages are obviously out (so no RPython/PyPy or C/C++ polyglots)

Q: Trick or Treat polyglot

BrainStoneSince Halloween is coming up I though I might start a fun little code golf challenge! The challenge is quite simple. You have to write a program that outputs either trick or treat. "The twist?" you may ask. Well let me explain: You program has to do the following: Be compilable / runnable in ...

Anonymous
4:24 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev It's a more specific (and more difficult) task than Trick/Treat.

Then why did my challenges that did that ged marked as dulplicateds?

@DmitryKudriavtsev You don't have to link the challenge - I've seen it (my answer is the latest answer on that challenge)

Any solution from the other one could be trivially modified to solve that one and be competitive. Only a small subset of solutions to Trick/Treat could be modified to solve what I'm proposing.

Q: Regression to solve sin(x)=-x

theideasmithThe goal is simple: to numerically estimate the solution to sin(x)=-x and print it out in the fewest number of bytes. You can do this however you like. An obviously suboptimal python solution using gradient descent: from math import * from random import * a=x=0.001 def dE(x):return 2*(sin(x)+...

Oliver did use the Sandbox recently, but it was the post-after-less-than-a-day-with-no-comments-and-a-negative-score way of using the Sandbox.
