My ideal setup would be an SPI SDcard + some 8bit (6502 maybe) with a minimal Brainfuck kernel + some means of output (AVR+VGA? just to display ASCII on a video feed). There's an Apple ][ assembly BF interpreter for the 6502 already, should be easy to port

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

steveverrillAnother cake question - Share it fairly! I'm having a party, and there were going to be 8 of us. As I like to cut the slices of cake fairly, I normally get a round cake and make the cuts with the help of a protractor (any code golfer would!) But this time I found the bakery were making octagonal...

Chat challenge: What's the shortest string you can google to have the first result be codegolf.stackexchange.com ? (You could use a different search engine than google.)

Does it have to be the homepage, or can it be a different one (ex. a question)?

1:04 AM
8 characters in Google: "codegolf"

@Doorknob I'm thinking the homepage or the questions page or something, but the question ones might be interesting too.
@AlexA. cdegof works too

Haven't been able to get shorter than cdegolf.

Gross, Bing
The problem is that there's already a search term. There needs to be a bar which can receive no input and the first search result will be PPCG.

The last guy in Seattle who got a job at On-Site (where I worked prior to SO), quit a week after he started to work at Damnazon.
Not impressed. :-(

Yeah, I've heard nothing but bad things about working at Amazon.
(Literally nothing but bad things. I had not heard a single positive thing.)

I've heard both good and bad things.
Steve Yegge apparently loved his time at Amazon.

Should I know who Steve Yegge is?

He was an outspoken blogger who used to blog about all kinds of programming-related topics. He even appeared on one episode of Stack Overflow podcast.
Other than that, no.
Last I heard, he works at the Kirkland office of Google.

1:44 AM
^ also very close to me

Yes.
That would be why he used to work at Amazon, after all.

Why? Because it was close?
Amazon is down in Seattle close to where I work now.

Well, I'm not sure whether he lives closer to Seattle or Kirkland or Redmond. I figured if you live in one, you'd be happy to commute to the others.
In the same way that, theoretically, jobs in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill would be of interest to me (even though in practice I hate having to commute >30 minutes, which was why I never pursued anything with Google's Chapel Hill office).
(Back when I lived in Durham, travelling to Chapel Hill wasn't too bad. But travelling there from Raleigh is more onerous.)

I also hate having to commute >30 minutes, which is why commuting to Seattle from my house everyday is the worst. (Can be closer to 40 minutes depending on the time of day.)

1:52 AM
Ideally I'd like to work from home. ;)

I worked from home when I was working for On-Site, but they only wanted to hire senior devs for remote roles.
I like the flexibility of working at home and from the office. Some Stack Overflow employees do actually do that, if they live close enough to the office.
(50% home, 50% office)
100% WFH is not my preferred mode of work, but since there's no Stack Overflow office in Raleigh, I do what I have to do. :-)

Entirely remote isn't your preferred mode of work?? I think it sounds wonderful. (Though I do think there's value to having face-to-face time with your colleagues.)

@AlexA. I've worked 100% remote for 7 years now. It's a lonely way to work, after a while.

I can imagine but I'm pretty introverted so I still think I'd do well in that situation. :)

I'm probably more introverted than you. I'm much more introverted than people think I am. ;-)

2:02 AM
Introverted or antisocial?

Having said that, I'm an NF type (INFP), not an NT, so I guess I still find value in interacting with people.
@ZachGates Antisocial doesn't mean what I think you're trying to mean. ;-) oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/…

Indeed that's what I meant. :P

What, "contrary to the laws and customs of society"?

Clearly we aren't antisocial given that we're here in chat. :P

I mean, okay, so I speed some, so that's "contrary to laws" I guess (not so much customs, since there are lots of speeders in these parts), but still. :-P

2:06 AM
@ChrisJester-Young I'm ISFJ.

@AlexA. I talk here in chat a lot, but I typically don't chat with people often IRL. :P

"Antisocial" meaning "not sociable; not wanting the company of others". "Introverted" meaning "preoccupied with your own thoughts and feelings", though. I was wondering if that was the case, or if you just didn't enjoy socializing at all.

@ZachGates I'm not unsociable. I just like my own company a lot. :-)

Same, haha.

@AlexA. Huh, I took that test and got the same result.

2:13 AM
Is there a faster way to invert a boolean in Python than flag = not flag?

Faster as in golfier?

Yeah

@Doorknob Either the test is rigged or we have similar personalities. :P

@AlexA. Forer effect.
Try this test instead: keys2cognition.com/explore.htm

Forer?

I suppose I could do something like
flag = 1
if flag > 0:
    flag = ~flag
but then I'd need the inverse, so it's really just longer.
Oh.
Nevermind.

@ZachGates I bet there's a shorter way to write that in Pyth! :-P

I'm sure lol

@ChrisJester-Young That one told me ISTJ.

@Doorknob Interesting.
Do you have the chart? If you could message me with the chart, I can read more into it.
(Doesn't have to be publicly posted if you don't want to.)

2:24 AM

@Doorknob Roger.

@Doorknob that's racist
are you saying blue people should have more power than black people?

>_>

<_<

\o/

2:25 AM
@Doorknob Looking purely at the top functions, I'd say you're ESTJ.

oh we're doing that thing
INTP

(and not ISTJ as the site tells you)
Reading the other bars confirms my supposition of ESTJ also.
@orlp "That thing" == keys2cognition.com/explore.htm and not some other MBTI-style test.
The test I linked to produces cognitive function charts that I use to determine what type looks like the best fit.

@ChrisJester-Young So... what does that mean? (These are all just random, cryptic four-letter combinations to me.)

@Doorknob There are 8 cognitive functions: sensing, intuiting, thinking, and feeling, each with extroverted and introverted attitudes.
The chart tells you which function/attitude pairings are used most.
The 16 personality types map to a certain "preferential order" of these pairings.
For example, ESTJ function ordering is Te Si Ne Fi, which means Te is the strongest function, Si is the second, etc.
If you look at your chart, you can see that it reinforces that sequence.
ISTJ is Si Te Fi Ne.

Isn't Ni stronger than Ne in my chart?

2:33 AM
Yes, but you can see that neither ESTJ nor ISTJ has Ni in one of the top 4 slots.
Very few people's charts match the "standard" ordering very perfectly.
You just have to do a "best fit" and go from there.

Ah, I see.

Am keen to see what Alex's chart looks like, though.
(and orlp, if also participating)
@Doorknob BTW (and this is advanced-level stuff, so don't break your brain over it), there is a way to algorithmically work out the function ordering for each of the 16 types. i.e., it is calculated, and not just "I said so".
And of course, there's an inverse algorithm (using the function ordering to work out the type), which is what I do when I try to work out people's types.
which is why I ask for the charts. :-)

Yeah, this is really interesting stuff that I never knew existed. :)

Well, if you're interested enough to learn the algorithm, just ask. I'm more than happy to share. :-)

The website you linked actually lists three possibilities: ISTJ, ESTJ, and INTJ. If I were to personally describe myself, I would probably say I'm somewhere in the middle of those three.

2:42 AM
So we've looked at the ordering for ISTJ and ESTJ. INTJ is Ni Te Fi Se.
Your Ni score is too low to be an INTJ, at least for the test results you have, I think.
I definitely think you're T-dominant.

Hmm, yes, I can see that.

I don't want to spam this room, so I'll explain the algorithm in the other room. ;-)

What other room? :P

@ChrisJester-Young It's not as if there's much other conversation here at the moment anyway, but sure ;)

@Doorknob Okay, fine, I'll put it here then.
To understand the cognitive function preferences, you actually have to know what each of the 4 letters in the MBTI type means, plus, of course, knowing what the 8 cognitive functions are (Se, Si, Ne, Ni, Te, Ti, Fe, Fi).
The first letter, E or I, basically signifies what attitude your dominant function is.
The second letter, S or N, tells you what your main perceiving function is.
The third letter, T or F, tells you what your main judging function is.
The fourth letter, J or P, tells you which of the judging or perceiving function is extroverted.

2:50 AM
Okay, I think I'm starting to understand some of this.

Let's look at ESTJ, for example. E means the dominant function has an extroverted attitude. S means that the main perceiving function is sensing. T means the main judging function is thinking. J means that the main extroverted function is the judging function, i.e., thinking (in this case).
(i.e., in this case, the main introverted function is the perceiving function, i.e., sensing in this case)
Looking only at the STJ, you can already tell that the two main functions are Te and Si. The first letter tells you which of those go first.
So ESTJ is Te Si, and ISTJ is Si Te.
From the first two functions, you can work out the third and fourth. The third is the opposite of the second, and the fourth is the opposite of the first.
Opposite here means the "other" function in the same category (perceiving or judging), with the opposite attitude.
The fifth to eighth functions are known as the "shadow functions", which are even weaker than the first to fourth. In standard order, the fifth is the same as the first but with opposite attitude, the sixth is the same as the second but with opposite attitude, and so on.

@orlp Let's see. Ti is clearly the highest, though your Te is also very high and can be a contender for the dominant function. Ne, Si, and Fi are also very high.
Te Si Ne Fi is my chosen interpretation, which makes you ESTJ. Another possible interpretation is: Ti Ne Si Fe (though your Fe is really too low to be 4th slot), which is INTP.
Your chart is somewhat oddball to be able to interpret straightforwardly.

I think that at some point, he changed his picture to Doorknob's and took on the exact name
The guy ran for moderator in one of the past elections, with practically no rep or participation or anything...

@Justin Correct on both counts.
(Both that Wobbuffet tried to impersonate Doorknob and that they know each other in person.)
