Avoiding inline modifiers but I guess that's too simple...

it's also something almost no one would think of in the first place ;)

hehe true

I'll probably add one more rather general tip tomorrow along the lines of "know your flavours" which gives an overview over the unique and useful features of the more popular flavours (recursion, balancing groups, unicode properties)
(focusing on features that are actually useful for golfing)

Great!

12:29 AM
All this talk of regexes made me want to golf something, so I did this... but ended up with the same answer as the accepted :/

haha, not bad

My golfer spat out a 59 though... I need to add in something which gives harder to match words more weighting :/

I should sleep...
I'll post the regex addition challenge tomorrow unless someone finds some flaws

:) k

I have a music composition sketchpad (in Finale), which I've slowly been adding to over the past two months. Today I hit the 1000 measure mark.
That's a lot of music.
(A significant percentage is a single unaccompanied melody line which changes every few measures, but that's the point of a sketchpad.)

3 hours later…
5:24 AM
I want some sort of showcase page
where I can present my answers that I think are really cool
I'm mighty impressed with that image generation challenge I just did in CJam lol

5:37 AM
There is an "about me" section at your profile
people put there their cool stuff

Me too! me too! look at me! look at me! codegolf.stackexchange.com/users/2381/luser-droog
haha made you look.

should I feel tricked?

6:11 AM
nah. I'm proud of what's there. Just being silly.

@Optimizer deciding how short you need to make your CJam, I see :-)

@xnor deciding if I need to worry or not :P

10:14 AM
lets wait for an APL answer

@Optimizer to what?

Q: Generate the set of prepend-append permutations in lexicographically sorted order

Joe Z.Define a prepend-append sequence of length n to be a permutation of the numbers 1, 2, ..., n that can be generated by the following procedure: Start with the number 1. For each number from 2 to n, place this number to the beginning or end of the sequence (either prepend or append it, hence the ...

@FUZxxl got 1 byte off there with the f@[&0trick
also f@[&0&1 is the weirdest J expression for me now

thank you.
@randomra Indeed, that's what it looks like.

10:49 AM
gah, why does github not let me use an ssh key for 2 accounts
If I figure out how to do it, I will need to commit at least 30000 times to make a net time saving

11:02 AM
what's the problem with that?
You can have multiple ssh keys for you ssh client.

Right, the problem is to regain the lost hour reading about ssh-config ;)

Q: Edit Python to Python2/Python3

MastEvery once in a while I encounter an answer which claims to be Python. However, most Python code is specific to either Python2 or Python3. Often the answer starts with Python Whitch should be fixed to either Python2 or Python3 However, this edit is only one character. I need six to make an...

11:28 AM
@feersum 30K commits per hour is rather huge

noo it's 30K commits per lifetime

oh
but you only wasted an hour

How do I type <blah> in morkdown without it being parsed as html?

11:48 AM
"morkdown"
Do html entities work?

a few things like <strike>

No I mean <

yeah I think I used one for an em dash one time
thanks..that should have been obvious
hmm what 2d regex feature should I implement next
probably |
the code is already so bad and I only implemented the simplest things, lol

12:15 PM
@feersum can't you also solve the boggle problem?

z\B\O\G\G\L\E

@MartinBüttner I could if I added case-insesitivity
It would require z between every letter
\Bz\Oz\Gz\Gz\Lz\E

LOL

Oh right, case insensitivity...

lol @ what?

12:20 PM
\Wz\Iz\Zz\Az\Rz\Dz\Sz\Oz\Fz\Oz
@feersum just the conversion of z\B\... to \Bz\...
(i have no idea what they mean)
\W\iz\a\r\dz\O\f\Oz - What does this do ?

Allows turns after every other letter

the z at the end does nothing ;)

that's a name

@feersum how come udlr includes diagonals?

oops, forgot about those!

12:44 PM
@Optimizer Everything is broken because instead of using the sane 2-minute workaround of adding a shutdown -r now to /etc/crontab he pulls the plug once a day?

that timer does it
it has a rotating thingy
set to 1 day
What's Up ? Not seen you here lately ..

1:08 PM
@Optimizer No, it doesn't. shutdown -r stops the disk cleanly. The wall timer risks damaging the hardware on a daily basis.

dammit Peter, its XKCD

My contract ran out, so I've had other priorities.
It being XKCD is precisely why I'm so surprised that it's using a wall timer rather than a cron job.

heard of sattire ? sarcasm ? anime ? manga ?

@PeterTaylor If the box hangs, good luck resetting it with a cron-job.

someone here was saying that pebble time will hardly reach 20M ...

1:12 PM
I assumed that the reset frequency was selected to be more frequent than the memory exhaustion.
And despite thinking hard for a minute, I can't work out what anime or manga have to do with XKCD, nor any satire or sarcasm which I may have overlooked.

memory exhaustion won't really hang the box...
I never said they have to do anything with that xkcd :P

You just decided to do a random general knowledge test? :P

I made a template function isA<T> which determines whether something is a T. Do I need to also make an isAn function to test whether something is a type beginning with a vowel?

1:34 PM
Yes, but make sure you check the class name within the function and pass along to the proper one (preferably with a warning) if the wrong one is called.

Hmm, for 2D language design should we post working prototypes or post something once we can solve 8 problems?

my threshold was 1 problem haha

Ahaha k XD
I'm also thinking of taking a direction-based approach, hope this doesn't end up too similar (it shouldn't)

2:25 PM
@feersum with a vowel? that's a bit simplistic. what about isAn<Hour>?

What if I'm trying to make a library to be used by many opinionated coders and they use isAn<History>?

I think before you worry about that, you need a regex that checks if it's even pronounceable ;)

@feersum then they're wrong

3:26 PM
@MartinBüttner It's not that simple

3:38 PM
Saying 'history' without the 'h' sound is as bad as saying 'schedule' with a soft opening. Why did the English have to go and screw up English? :P

@PeterTaylor the more you know...
honestly, I don't think I've ever heard someone produce historic, heroic or hotel with a silent h

That probably means you've never talked about any of them to an Eastender.

maybe ;)

'enry 'iggins would be ashamed.

Something else that's mentioned in that thread is that some people (particularly BBC newsreaders) will say "an history" pronouncing the "h".

3:44 PM
somehow it makes me smile whenever I see Peter Shor answering or commenting on something on SE ^^

I'm pretty sure I've heard "an heroic" before.

the last bit of English that always made sense to me is slipping away...

Enlightenment at last :)

Martin, you might appreciate youtube.com/watch?v=eYFQ8DqdGVQ from 28:15 to 29:15.

Which human language has the strictest / most consistent syntax?

3:56 PM
Probably either Esperanto or Swahili.
They're the only two languages in which the verb "to be" is regular.

I think Latin has very few irregular forms from what I remember
but isn't very strict on word order

Latin has practically no rules on word order.

4:10 PM
no APL ans. yet ..
has anyone backed on kickstarter here ?

Once.

how much ?

@Optimizer yes

80 USD

49 secs ago, by Optimizer
how much ?

4:11 PM
between 10 and 55 dollars

so.. did you get the promised items ?
(both of you .. )

one didn't get funded (I still received the album in question as a digital download for free though). of the others, only one has been produced so far, and I did receive that.

Yes. Note that the thing I backed was a board game based on a webcomic, so it wasn't as high risk as some projects on there.

still waiting for 4 projects though

so if it does not get funded, you get your money back ?
(as in did not reach its goal)

4:14 PM
I think that depends on the project

do the project people get the money anyways ?

@Optimizer If it doesn't get funded, yes.

@PeterTaylor answering to which line ?

The more iffy one is what happens if it gets funded but the project turns out to be too ambitious.

cool
the one i want to try out is already funded though .. and looks promising to be properly going to production.

4:24 PM
let me guess, pebble time? :P

nooooo
so many other watches are better than that
and i hate square dial with leather strap

Even better is no watch ;)

if I had to buy smart watch, I would go for LG Urbane LTE
standalone - no mobile required. Also, no android requriement

"if I had to buy smart watch"... who has to buy a smart watch?

exactly

4:47 PM
Also, LG Urbane LTE is targetted to be 1000 USD

Not a fan of the Urbane. I have (and plan to keep) a phone. I'd rather one that paired to my phone. Seems like it would be better on battery life, price, and size. I also imagine you'd need a separate data plan to use it? If I didn't have a phone, maybe, but at that point I'd rather have a phone than a $1000 watchphone.

The issue with the phone dependent ones is that they all are Android based
(for now)

This is true, but the "for now" is important. I'd imagine any platform with a significant market share will be targeted, just not first.
Personally, I use and like Android, so that wouldn't be an issue.

so yeah obv apple watch is coming
and I am sure MS will launch one for windows too

5:03 PM
The bigger issue for me is use case. I just don't have any need for one. I wore a watch for most of my life, until I started carrying a smartphone with me. At that point it felt redundant.

taking out the whole phone for just time is overkill
specially . unlocking it too.
(not unlocking, but getting screen to show up)

I don't check the time so often that that's an issue. If I'm at home, work, or in the car, there are clocks available. If I'm not, I'm probably not in a hurry.

@Optimizer Buying a smartwatch to tell the time is even more overkill.

@PeterTaylor who said that ?

When I do end up checking the time, it's normally because I'm standing in line bored somewhere. At that point I now have a smartphone in my hand I can entertain myself with :P

1 hour later…
6:20 PM
Huzzah I can match single chars [/excellent progress]

6:37 PM
Is this for the 2D matching language?

Yeah :P

when claiming earliest posted as a tie breaker .. do we only consider the first edit time due to which tie was formed ?

so weird.

that is, Joe Z is right

6:47 PM
its about the answer.

FryAmTheEggman had 19 bytes before you did
I don't know what's "the weirdest way of looking at it" about considering him the winner

no, about the earliest posted

yeah, he was the earliest who posted a solution of 19 bytes

7:19 PM
When I'm bored, one of my favorite things to do is to surf the various SE sites, sort by votes, and go to the last page.

7:39 PM
Right now I'm at chess.SE.
Some guy wants to learn how to beat a French opening in about 10 minutes.

wow chess SE doesn't have any golden question badges (apart from a handful of 10k view badges)

I'm at crossvalidated.SE now.
The lowest-scoring question might have been intentionally bad.
Title: How to deal with a fake scientist? Details: What makes you to believe that statistics is something is worth to think about. Isn't that a fake science? Do you think that statistics is a real science? Do you think statisticians should be paid?
EE.SE had nothing interesting.
PS I guess crossvalidated.SE is technically stats.SE.

Slightly off-topic, but I just wrote this as a prototype. What do you think?

I'm pretty sure that's not considered "off-topic."

7:56 PM
@PhiNotPi Do you like the idea?

I'm not really sure what it does.

it's a DSL to replace marshalling code
because marshalling data is really tedious in C if you want to do it right.

I don't really think I'm qualified to comment. I didn't even know what marshaling was until I just googled it.

the old problem of "here is a binary file format; dump that into a data structure"
which is tedious to get right with portable code.

8:56 PM
@Optimizer nice job with the 17 bytes!

:)

9:40 PM
I could use a challenge...

give me two random words
1 per user

random

words
I feel like neither word was particularly random

My word was random

okay, this time I'm serious:
ink

9:43 PM
banana

cool
now give me 2 days

huskies

I might just try shotgun numbers in Prelude
or fizzbuzz
that being said, I really need to figure out a good way in prelude to decrement two numbers simultaneously and stop a loop when either of them hits zero

Hey everybody, I was looking around the site, and I couldn't find any code-golf questions that were simply "Sort a List", and nothing more. Does anyone know if we've had one? If not, I'd like to ask it.

Q: Sorting a list of strings without using any built-in sort method

ProgramFOXThe goal of this Code Golf is to create a program that sorts a list of strings (in ascending order), without using any built-in sort method (such as Array.Sort() in .NET, sort() in PHP, ...). Note that this restriction excludes using a built-in method that sorts an array descending, and then rev...

@ma
@MartinBüttner Thanks, I don't know why I couldn't find that

hi

don't encourage them

:)
Did you know that pacas and alpacas are two completely different animals?

I didn't know that pacas were a thing

Well, you do now.

indeed

11:42 PM
Image comparison time!
Paca:
Alpaca:

oh, like completely different

Fun fact about pacas, from the wiki page: "In young pacas, the skin is covered with horny scales about 2 mm (0.079 in) in diameter."
