woot! tied for second on caveman duels with my first try
time to actually implement the part of my idea that inspired me to try at all :)

woot! my dominoes circuits works for the example input!
this is a glorious day - if I can the solver to not run out of memory for more than 3 inputs, then I will be able to produce massive, unnecessarily big circuits all day long

1:32 AM
@VisualMelon which problem?

A: Proposed Question Sandbox - Mark XIV

Martin BüttnerDomino Circuits code-challenge It is possible to build simple logic gates from dominoes. Hence, by combining these or otherwise, arbitrary binary functions can be computed with dominoes. But of course, everyone who has played with dominoes (except Robin Paul Weijers) has experienced the disapp...

not posted yet, but I've spent too much time on the prequel
so I spent today doing that

ahh

the result isn't very compact
but I'm just pleased it works
the main issue is my solver, which runs out of memory if the function has more than 2 terms
it needs re-writing properly

2:28 AM
I can't think of a good system for caveman duels for keeping data in long term storage files if multiple threads of my script might get run at once

Hello everyone.
I have a small issue with answering questions here. I will post a solution to a code golf in the coming hours. However, the solution in the particular platform and language can be made differently (in terms of looks), although I suspect the implementation of both to be very similar (the only thing I would need to effectively change would be the output functions and some variables).

How would I deal with this? Should I post both answers or just merge the other (possible) implementation with my current (but as of yet unpublished) answer?

4:21 AM
I think you should pick one path and then ask again when you can link us to an example of your situation.

2 hours later…
6:37 AM
@VisualMelon I'll give you the benchmark set later today, so you can test a bit more
aw man.... now I need to find another unanswered, answerable, old question question to get my Revival badge... bloody hell...

Q: Should Users Upvote Winning/Leading Answers

isaacgI've noticed that on many questions, the answer which should be the (current) winner gets very few upvotes and is not accepted. The accepted answer issue is hard to fix, but the upvotes element is easier. The question is: Should we be upvoting the winning/leading answer by default? Obviously, w...

Morning folks
Just wondering... (cos I'm new to the codegolf thing). Should I have proposed my question first. I saw that there's a placeholder sandbox question where people are submitting potential question ideas as answer ?

@EoinCampbell It's not an absolute requirement to use the sandbox, though it's a good idea for questions that you're unsure of.

@Trimsty. ok. Cheers I'd reviewed a couple of other KOTH questions from @doorknob & others and used them as "guidance" for how to phrase the game, rules etc... but I've still had to make a number of clarification edits since that start for things I hadn't considered/missed.

@EoinCampbell well, you got a lot of upvotes xD

9:04 AM
Cool, my planes controller simulation is running
My example planes are pretty dumb though, most fights they just fly into a wall

@overactor :D

Someone gets shot in at most 5% of the fights

I noticed that my rpslv player often loses to opponents who start to use one move exclusively after a few rounds... I wonder if I should set MOVE to 0 by default.

@undergroundmonorail Mine loses to randomness. :P

You can't beat randomness
It's always going to be 50/50
So if you lose, you're just unlucky

9:07 AM
You can beat randomness with a large enough pool of players.

eh, isn't it more like 33/66 in RPSLV?

@Trimsty Every move beats two moves, loses to two moves and ties itself. The only different is less chance of a tie.

Yeah, but in a one on one game, it's 50/50
That's what I meant.

I just had 3 planes crashing into a wall in the same round O.O
Those were the only 3 planes left out of 4 at that point
Yay, someone shot someone!

9:13 AM
\o/

i made a very slightly weighted random rps bot (burpbot) and beat nearly everything 70% of the time
@overactor :D

How did you weigh it?

@overactor There's a 1 in 2 chance that it won't pick the move that you've used the most so far,

@Sparr Hmm, fair point. I may add that I'll clear all files between tournaments, if only for consistency. The multithreading is an issue I didn't think of; I don't really have any ideas on how to fix that though.

then there's a 7 in 10 chance that it'll say "this is stupid, I'll just use it"

9:16 AM
@EoinCampbell Welcome to PPCG, by the way! :)

if anyone is interested in discussing this proposal

TIL I can only sing well in the car. lol

One time I played Rock Band with a bunch of drunk people and was still the worst singer in the room.

@undergroundmonorail xD

It was fucking fun, though. It's rare that I can sing in public and not feel like I'm being judged by my peers :P

9:25 AM
singing along to Passenger now, having to fake a British accent
lemme get some Modest Mouse or Other Lives or something :S
@undergroundmonorail :D I'm alone atm, so

Fun Fact: Take This to Your Grave is the best Fall Out Boy album.

@undergroundmonorail Fun Fact: If you put headphones on wrong so the right speaker is on your mouth and the left one is on the back of your head
it makes for an epic microphone

and it actually works

my laptop's going to die but i don't feel like plugging it in
to the desktop!

9:34 AM
xD

@undergroundmonorail I'm more of a From under teh corktree guy

@overactor That's a good one too :)
I decided to get food while I was up, which is why it took a couple minutes to get from my bed to the computer 2 feet away.

@Doorknob Thanks man.

cracks throat trying to sing along to pink
today isn't going as well as I'd hoped xD

9:59 AM
Would anyone like to write a very simple plane and test my controller?

A: Proposed Question Sandbox - Mark XIV

overactorDogfight (Almost done, still looking for help) Sandbox note: Since no one has offered hosting this challenge I've started writing some code for it, I don't think I could host it the way I envisioned it so if I do this, it'll be java only. The advantage is that there will be a lot of boilerplate ...

@overactor is that a rhetorical question
of course
:D

Coolio
General feedback would also be cool.

@overactor i'm bad at feedback xD

I'm especially wondering if planes actually shooting eachother is likely when tehy're smarter.
they're
Avoiding the walls shouldn't be too hard

maybe, I'll have to take a better look at this

10:02 AM
I could write some boilerplate code for it.
So you can do something like:

and I've never compiled multi-class java outside of NetBeans before xD

plane.getSensibleDirections()
Which would return an array of directions so that picking any of those will never have you crashing into a wall
but maybe that's too much hand-holding
I gotta go
I used eclipse
which is free

thanks in any case

@overactor k :P i'll just set up a netbeans project actually
@undergroundmonorail nuuu
dogecoinball: poland edition
So I'm writing totally random pointless lyrics to sing randomly in order to come up with a tune.
chrome opened
slowly as usual
i typed in some words
and a website appeared

typing in a textarea
i should get payed for this
writing code all day
for no apparent reason

[chorus]

cream cheese and sprinkles
gotta make the code short
maybe if i use a ziiiiiip
but i ran out of chip'n dip.

cream cheese and sprinkles
drinking iced tea
writing in python
execution time is
not
relevant

not writing java
not gonna declare a class
not writing haskell
i don't like curry

testing my code
scared of a glitch

10:11 AM
goes without a hitch
:)

xD

Steam Games really work fantastically on Linux nowadays. You know what's a pain in the ass to use on Linux?
STEAM.
Every time I launch it I'm thinking "maybe this time it will let me play my games"

10:24 AM
My program reckons the easiest way to make an AND gate involves using a NOT

NOT(NOT(A) OR NOT(B))?
That's what Minecraft taught me.

NOT strictly

that was what I thought it would come up with
but it outwitted me
I won't divulge how it works because that wouldn't be any fun
I still haven't worked out how better to write the solver
maybe I should go outside or something, take a break from dominoes
argh, stupid error in solver wasting memory, it's able to solve XNOR now

10:56 AM
@VisualMelon not bad! ... I hope your solution won't be unbeatably good by the time I post the challenge :P
preliminary benchmark set coming in about 1-2 hours

fun fun fun
it will not be unbeatably good, I'm no good at Maths
and frankly I like the current output too much to want to improve it too drastically xD

11:27 AM
Hi guys

@overactor yo :D
haven't written a plane yet, got distracted by nightcore and erb

How are you doing?
don't worry about it

@overactor i don't know whether to be excited or disappointed at today, lol :P

@Trimsty Why is that?

@overactor nobody's home today so I can do whatever, I decided to dedicate it to singing practice and attempting to compose

11:31 AM
@Trimsty Is it working out?

the bad part is that I suck at it just as much as I did with everybody here,
good news is that i'm only an hour in and there's still 5 left
@overactor nope xD
all of the tune stuff I think of seems cheesy and overused

That seems normal
originality is tough

i can't wrap my head around music being binary
1 for higher than the last note, 0 for lower, lol

There's more to it than that though, surely

@overactor yeah, chords, dissonance, melodic centers, key changes, minors, harmonics
dorian scales, arpeggios, degrees, dynamics
but none of them are helping ;_;

11:35 AM
Maybe you need to listen to more different sorts of music?
expand your library

@overactor perhaps, I play classical music and I've been listening to Modest Mouse, Other Lives, Pink, and Lorde all day xD

I only know the latter two

@overactor meh, they're not very well known

Who's your favorite band?
or musician

@overactor i'd have to say Lorde, Team is awesome
not a big fan of Royals
@overactor Got your controller program compiling now
time to make a plane >:D

11:49 AM
Sweet
@Trimsty My favorite at the moment would be The XX
Is it clear what the helper classes/functions are for?

@overactor haven't dissected it too much yet, was too busy using duckduckgo
:P

have problems with google tracking you?
download ghostery

@overactor ooh, shiny
also, for (int i =0; i<2; i++) {
that missing space is making my eye twitch o:

hah, good point

^ probably the most educated opinion i can have of anything

11:54 AM
fair enough
so, how is my code treating you?

@overactor so, getPossibleDirections() just returns all the directions that won't kill you immediately? :P
pretty good i guess :D

no

;_;

It returns all possible directions that are valid
My Dumbplanes show you a test to see if going that direction will kill you or not
if (myPlanes[i].getPosition().add(possibleDirections[random].getAsPoint3D()).isInAr‌ena(arenaSize)) { // We'll try not to fly directly into a wall.
directions that pass that test will not immediately kill you

@overactor kewlio

11:57 AM
If you want it to work a bit better you'll have to test if you're not right next to a wall and flying straight at it
You can test how close yyo are a wall with:
plane.public int getDistanceFromWall(char wall);

nice
reading the spec and all of a sudden
> To visualize this, grab your rubik's cube (I know you have one)

and to get the char you can call plane.getDirection().getMainDirections()
do you have one?

yes
yes i do

getMainDirections() returns an array of chars

NSEWUD?

12:00 PM
if it only has one element, you shoudl check if you're right next to the wall represented by that char
yup
['N','U'] if you're heading north and up
because being right next to a wall and heading right for it means you won't be able to get away
avoiding getting stuck in corners wil be a bit more intricate

interesting

Should I include a helper method that checks if a certain move will get you inevitably killed?

nope
i don't see that being necessary :P

I feel like some things should be left to the contestants

it kinda reminds me of the vector racing challenge, the whole point of that was to not hit a wall

12:04 PM
In order to shoot people, you'll want to simulate possible moves and see if your expected shooting range intersects with your enemies flying range.
Don't make it too complex yet though

got some lunch
a.k.a the world's sloppiest pb&j

Tasty hopefully

:D
aaaaaaand it's gone
@overactor oh btw, I initially got a lot of errors because the PlaneControl class file doesn't have a .java extension

thanks, fixed

@overactor is "valid direction" defined by where your plane is facing or in what direction it moved last?

12:19 PM
the direction it's facing

@overactor Ah. If it had been the other, you could just get them on your tail, turn around and fly backwards, and shoot them :D

you'll need at least 4 turns to turn around completely
I think

@overactor yup

yeah
and you'll move 3 spaces in one direction while doing so

...we're discussing the requirements of flying a fighter plane backwards
:D

12:23 PM
Luckily, this is not possible
you can pretend you're flying a bit diagonally but really you're zigzagging slightly

I know what I'll name my submission though

Top Gun?
something with backwards?

uh, nug pot?
i'll probably name it "rear-view mirror enthusiast"

Is that a drug thing?
ah

top gun | nug pot

12:27 PM
Good thinking by the way, getting behind someone is key
ha

;3
"Rear-view mirror selfie!!" - my submission
snap

add in a hashtag maybe

I wonder when somebody will submit an EmoWolf plane?

Probably not long into the compo

i should take advantage of this opportunity

12:31 PM
You could have your planes crash into eachother
or shoot eachother

or just fly into the nearest wall
I'll call it the Emo-Focke-Wulf

they can't easily fly into eachother.
because two planes can pass eachother
when they move to eachother's position
like in the create your wolf challenge.
I've updated the controller, you can now automize doing a bunch of fights after another.

:D
just finished writing the emo entry, lol

does it run?
Or rather, does it fly?
Ba dumm tss

:P
I dunno how to actually load it in, lol
oh wait, i was looking too far left in the code

12:49 PM
and now?

@overactor just ran it
The match between DumbPlanes and EmoFockeWulf begins and will go on for 100 rounds.

ROUND 1

DumbPlanes's first plane: x: 0 y: 5 z: 0 direction: S cool down: 0

DumbPlanes's second plane: x: 0 y: 8 z: 0 direction: S cool down: 0

EmoFockeWulf's first plane: x: 13 y: 8 z: 13 direction: N cool down: 0

EmoFockeWulf's second plane: x: 13 y: 5 z: 13 direction: N cool down: 0

DumbPlanes's first plane move: direction: SWD change: true shoot: true

DumbPlanes's second plane move: direction: S change: false shoot: true
when you said DumbPlanes, you weren't kidding, were you :P

This was a bad run, even for them
You only ever went North

@overactor they lost to planes that don't actually do anything

What does your plane do so far, just fly forward?

12:53 PM
yup

I might most of the time to that
I don't think I usually survive 13 rounds

@overactor and the code is 278 bytes
just to move forward o_O

You should be able to do that more easily

package Planes;public class EmoFockeWulf extends PlaneControl{public EmoFockeWulf(int s, int r){super(s,r);}@Override public Move[] act(){Move[] m=new Move[2];m[0]=new Move(myPlanes[0].getDirection(),false,false);m[1]=new Move(myPlanes[1].getDirection(),false,false);return m;}}
i could probably use m[1]=m[0]; though

well, it's not a VERY easy challenge
Shouldn't that be LazyWolf btw?

12:57 PM
@overactor but the plane is doing it because it wants to die
lazywolves don't want to die, they want pizza

if you want to die, you should check if you're close to the U or D wall and then move to which ever is closest

@overactor but emowolf hates java and wants to starve himself
:P

Flying straight it is
beats dumbPlanes

plus this has the added irony of beating some submissions
which emowolf also had

as emowolf often does

1:00 PM
now it's 234 bytes
oh, i can remove @Override

Is EmoWolf always golfed?

@overactor he should be
anyway, just ran another round;

DumbPlanes's first plane move: direction: SWD change: false shoot: true

DumbPlanes's second plane move: direction: S change: true shoot: true
DumbPlanes did even worse this time!

@overactor The original one was, this one is not.

God damn, my planes are dumb

they make for better EmoWolves than mine!

1:06 PM
@ProgramFOX thanks.
They try to hard too die,
hence thay are not cool.

dominoes: the little holes in them are turing tarpits.

fabulous! thankyou kindly
time to find out if my newly improved solver isn't completely useless
will, it took the best part of a while to run out of memory on the 4bit parity checker

1:21 PM
well, this is a certifiable disaster, it's not coping with anything with 3 inputs still except a couple of examples I chose to be easy

Wow, a fight between two DumbPlanes went on for 33 rounds

@overactor o:

And then this happened the next fight:
ROUND 3

DumbPlanes1's first plane: x: 2 y: 7 z: 1 direction: S cool down: 0

DumbPlanes1's second plane: x: 2 y: 7 z: 2 direction: SWU cool down: 0

DumbPlanes2's first plane: x: 11 y: 9 z: 12 direction: N cool down: 0

DumbPlanes2's second plane: x: 11 y: 3 z: 11 direction: NWD cool down: 0

DumbPlanes1's first plane move: direction: SU change: true shoot: true

DumbPlanes1's second plane move: direction: S change: false shoot: true

DumbPlanes2's first plane move: direction: NWD change: true shoot: true

wat

They flew into eachother
hmm:
SCORE: DumbPlanes1: 3 DumbPlanes2: 6

IT'S A DRAW!

1:25 PM
:/
btw, documenting my music day fail; multiplayerpiano.com/Failedmusicday

Stupid little mistake
can't listen to music now, sorry

right, I definitely need to rethink the solver, this is quite inadequate

meh :P

@overactor I have a suggestion: replace this:
if (player1Score - player2Score > 1) {
out.println(player1String + " WINS!!!" + eol);
} else if (player1Score - player2Score > 1) {
out.println(player2String + " WINS!!!" + eol);
} else {
out.println("IT'S A DRAW!" + eol);
}
With this:

i like how you're forced to abstract cmp even though it's exactly what you need

1:30 PM
if (player1Score > player2Score) {
    // print player 1 wins
} else if (player2Score > player1Score) {
   // print player 2 wins
} else {
  // print draw
}

that makes sense

imma work on my actual plane now
...after i make some fettuccine

I think I'm done with my code

and by fettuccine i mean mislabeled tagliatelle
stupid supermarket

Have a nice meal

1:36 PM
@overactor ty :D
pours milk into pot, sets it on fire with spirits
i think i'm doing it wrong

any final feedback from anyone?
I'll throw it on the main site in half an hour - one hour.

@overactor actually just a reference to the bad translation on the back of the gas camping stove box
it was either that, or calling a medium

SCORES:

DumbPlanes1: 8 points.
DumbPlanes2: 4 points.
DumbPlanes3: 7 points.
DumbPlanes4: 5 points.
DumbPlanes5: 4 points.
DumbPlanes6: 2 points.

THE OVERALL WINNER(S): DumbPlanes1
With 8 points.
It's official, dumbPlanes1 wins, you can all go home

@overactor By the way, when posting your question, you can add <!-- language-all: lang-java --> at the top of your question. That gives all code blocks in your question syntax highlighting.

i always do it to my posts, partly to avoid somebody else editing it

1:44 PM
I always add it to my posts because it looks a lot better, especially with languages such as C# and Java.

Thanks for the tip @ProgramFOX

You're welcome!

i've just cooked my finger as well as the pasta by accident, lol

Does anyone else think the Forest Sim is a bit restrictive for a popcon? I don't see what creativity it really allows.

not as bad as doing it to your face (which I've done, i couldn't possibly get it to look any worse anyway)
@Geobits yeah :/

1:49 PM
@Geobits, yeah; maybe some parameters should be left to the entrants.
It's more like a coding challenge, with the feel of a wasted popcon.
The OP basically did the creative stuff.

@Geobits I've been contemplating that for an hour now :D
The only creative thing is the visualisation
but it's a lot of work upfront to even get to the visualisation part

It would make way more sense if it was the other way around.

Yea, I'm trying to figure out exactly how it could be changed to make it a better challenge before commenting. It's hard to say which way is best.

The OP provides a way to display forests and the entrants generate them and have them evolve
The one with the most beautiful ecosystem wins.

Because it does seem like it could be turned into something fun.
But as it is, it just feels like "write my program". All work.

1:53 PM
Exactly.
It seems like an entry to a challenge sans code.
and not like a question.
