Morning All!
@Liam: This answer here looked better and hence more suited to the question being asked. Your answer is also good, it being a very generic say about Hypothermia and its symptoms. The other answer directs well towards to what is being asked. I hope you are not offended if I take that up. +1 to you :)

morning

7:27 AM
@Ahlqvist hows it going? :)

Just fine, how are you @Aravona?

7:42 AM
Morning all

@Liam morning
@Ahlqvist doing good :) bit bored of my rest days

Rest days? No training?

No walking / hiking and no kayaking .... hip flexor injury
Luckily I'm mostly at work... and otherwise keeping myself amused on Twitter lol

That sounds boring. Injuries are really annoying when they restrict you from doing things.

8:04 AM
@Ahlqvist yup it's a bit of a pain, hoping the new workout regime I will start when healed will help prevent it happening again

That part sounds good at least (help preventing it). Do you do a lot of kayaking? In the sea or rivers?
eh, white-water kayaking, not "river"

@Aravona What is a hip flexor?

Did everyone see this
Turns out the path they were walking on simply collapsed
Alos
*A week ago, mountain gendarmes intercepted an Austrian climber at 3,200 meters on Mont-Blanc who was trying to ascend with his five-year-old son and had reached an altitude where the temperature was minus 20C and the winds around 150kmph.*

*"What was awful was that the gendarmes were forced to argue with the man to convince him to turn around. We're not even sure that he won't make another attempt," said Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of nearby St-Gervais-les-Bains.*
:O

Insane.

Puts the issues on Snowdon into perspective!

I was shocked that the causalities were from an UCPA group.
But I guess accidents can happen to everyone.

8:18 AM
@Ahlqvist Yeah, apparently it's a very common route and it simply collapsed. The guide had no chance to hold all five. Could argue there should of maybe been more guides..but yeah seems like a freak accident

That is not, however, the case with the other accidents or events mentioned in the article.
That is just stupidity.
2

@Ahlqvist Indeed, there's a big difference between freak occurrences (which always happen on mountains) and sheer stupidity!
today will be an "Arcade Fire" day.....
:D

@Liam it is one of the muscles in your hip which can get strained due to other muscles being tight... hamstrings, back, glutes... so it's basically a case of I need a full lower body workout

@Aravona huh huh glutes
that means butt....
:-/

@Ahlqvist I kayak currently on my local canal as it is the closest body of water... will also river and sea kayak but unlikely to white water. I have the Thames nearby :)
@Liam yup... I need a better butt.

8:24 AM
@Aravona ha ha

@Liam collasping path sounds terrifying...

@Aravona Yep, I'd imagine it is. It's a sheer arete at 12,000 feet too!
I think it's 12, It's bloody high either way you cut it

@Liam .... **** me.
That's too much for a mountain newbie like me

@Aravona This is why I'm building up to Mont Blanc. I need to gain more experience in snow and ice and alpine style rope work, etc.

I want to do Snowdon again next year, but might do Scarfell or Ben Nevis...

8:29 AM
@Aravona My girlfriend printed off a list of the highest mountains in wales yesterday and has now pinned them on the wall. She wants to tick them all off

@Liam makes sense. I want to climb mountains outside the UK but I've only done Snowdon twice ... started aged 22 now am 25 so plenty of time left to practise and get there :)

@Liam Fab! Welsh 3000s?

I've done quite a few of them already but that doesn't count apparently
....
@Aravona It's a longer list than that

@Liam bookmarked!
Sounds an awesome thing to do :D

8:31 AM
Tryfan is one of my favouites

@Aravona Ah, nice. I kayak mainly in the archipelago, but it not that much this year sadly.

I'm supposed to be making new git repositoriesfor our new project but I think I shall write my second equipment review and then rewrite my snowdon blog post :)

Not that I have any good reason, I just haven't been done.

@Ahlqvist archipelago?

@Ahlqvist that's amazing!
@Liam have you done the Molwyn (spelling..?) Mountains near Tanygrisiau?

8:34 AM
:)

@Liam Yes, all the small islands near land in the ocean :)

Prononced mole-win-i-on
I've done Siabod @Aravona

@Liam thanks! My welsh spelling is awful bur I did learn a few more traffic based words this time!

@Aravona Siabod is a lovely mountain. Means Lonely mountain because it's not attached to any other major peaks :(

@Liam those mountains are great fun though thats where we got snowed on and rained on but loved it... stood on the ege of a sheer drop in the snow by an abandoned slate mining village? Not much like that around! Amazing.

8:37 AM
@Ahlqvist Where abouts are you @Ahlqvist?

Awww bless!

Going to have to sign out for a bit. Got a shed load to do today, speak soon

@Liam I believe the Tibetans call Everest 'Mother of the World' or Holy Mother
Cya @Liam

@Liam Gothenburg, Sweden.

@Ahlqvist Been to Norway and Denmark, never been to sweden. My girlfriend loves "Bron". The TV show!

8:43 AM
@Ahlqvist oh awesome! Sweden is on my list to visit, along with Norway and Denmark (got friends in both)

Sweden is nice, you should visit it (I might be a bit biased though ;) ).
Norway has some great nature as well, loads of good (cross country) skiing if you are interested in that.

@Ahlqvist biased isn't so bad ;)
Going to brb a while to write up some posts for my website and sit on twitter ;) @GoLiveOutdoors

9:33 AM
@Ahlqvist I've never been skiing

10:05 AM
@Aravona Ping us the link once you have done the Snowdon post. Was it good fun?

Afternoon guys
This actually is a good question: outdoors.stackexchange.com/questions/6467/…

@RoryAlsop will do! :) my other half needa to write up Fridays visit to Betws y coed first :) it was absolutely amazing!
@WedPashi howdy!
I've 7 or so bites from the weekend, and they itch like a bugger
had a new question but think its too similar to: outdoors.stackexchange.com/q/5128/3313
@WedaPashi it's an ok question - blood pressure is only something a handful of people would consider important. Plus his question is about 'balancing' blood pressure which garlic doesn't do - nothing balances it, only raises or drops it.

10:49 AM
@WedaPashi Isn't that @Aravona other half answering?

@Liam yeah Dyna gave an answer
Nothings balances BP, and diet can control it easily. Cayenne pepper is way better than Garlic though
The issue is everything works 'in some people' ... I am on the contraceptive pill which is supposed to raise blood pressure... mine hasn't changed in 9 years.

11:05 AM
there are a lot of interesting food questions on outdoors.se
In case you haven't noticed ;)

Lol I have @Ahlqvist I wanted to ask one abiut wild foods in britian but there is a similar one so it would likely be a duplicate.

Q: Does garlic balance your blood pressure on long walks?

phpGeekDoes garlic balance your blood pressure? Do we need to take that in case we have a long walk through a jungle for 2 days? Does anyone have experience on this?

is based on an incorrect assumption. Low blood pressure is the issue in Jungles not high

@Liam what about it?

That's why you need to take salt tablets and drink more

@Liam ... oh really?

@Liam: Even I didn't get your point

Is it a problem?
Blood pressure deviations in the jungle?

11:21 AM
@Liam: Oh, gotcha

I think Dyna said that lol... I dunno I was paying attention... he decided to answer a question... I was playing pokemon.
2

@Aravona LOL
@Ahlqvist Your blood pressure can drop a lot. That's why you take salt tablets and drink lots. Dyhydration lowers blood pressure because there is less fluid in your veigns

@Ahlqvist I would say blood pressure is only an issue on a trek or in a jungle etc if you have a preexisting issue... otherwise it is less likely to affect you.

@Aravona Yes, true. If your fit and healthy and eat amnd drink well, you'll be fine.
Garlic will have practically zero effect

Whilst blood pressure changes are an issue you are unlikely to let yourself get massively dehydrated anyway. When you are on a planned and controlled trek that is, not talking suvival without any gear.
@Liam exactly... a good BMI, diet and fitness will keep you going better than Garlic.

11:26 AM
@Aravona I do love garlic though....
:D

Plus would one not have to drag a bunch of garlic pills or cloves all over the jungle...? Garlic for less insect bites though... but you need to eat it daily for months for an effect.

@Liam But dehydration is probably a bigger issue from not drinking enough rather than blood pressure.
oh, you seems to have said the same thing
I should read all posts...

@Liam same :) we have a garlic and salt and herb grinder... very tasty
@Ahlqvist lol don't worry... I miss a lot of posts due to my phone not auto reloading the page

@aravona: LOL @ Pokemon! :D :D :D

@WedaPashi lol yeah currently replaying Platinum

11:32 AM
@aravona: I think at this rate of edits, you will get Deputy so soon :-)

@WedaPashi why how many am I on??

@Ahlqvist yeah were agreeing! :)

12:10 PM
@aravona: You can see that on your profile
@aravona: Oh sorry! I messed up the badges. 80 "Suggested Edits" will get a "Strunk and White" badge
@aravona: 80 helpful flags will get you "Deputy", a good number of "Deputy" badges allotted to users is this site should have. Helps to keep the site clean from obsolete and un-necessary stuff.

Lol I wondered what you meant @WedaPashi but with only 13 flags I'm miles from Deputy. No clue how many edits I've gotten

12:35 PM
@aravona: What app do you use for Geocaching?

@Liam great answer on the Garlic question. Just realised the guy asked 4 seperate questions in one which is pretty poor anyway

The 'offcial' one is pretty good @WedaPashi

@WedaPashi the officical one
Well... the one by Geocaching.com

@Ahlqvist: Oh great. Thanks

But I have to tried any other app, so I can really say if there is anything better.

12:41 PM
@WedaPashi most people don't use an app though they will use a GPS then log their finds or DNFs on the website
Also I am not a premium member currently but might make a team in future :)

Switching from my Garmin geko 201 to the app was a huge improvement though
Way easier to just search in the app for something nearby if you have some extra time. More sports with a specialised gps (without map) maybe.

@Ahlqvist that is true whilst you have decent signal and battery... when those die out it can be a pain... especially when your phone is over a year old.
We had the signal and battery issue in the Common Wood in Penn.... goliveoutdoors.com/common-wood

Yeah. It depends a bit on what type of geocaching you do as well. Just take a cache in the city when you have some time to kill = phone and app is great.
Caches out in the forest or taking caches all day long = gps is better.

I use Endomondo when I go trail-running :) Its an amazing APP

@Ahlqvist due tocost of GPSs we use phones eith the app even in forests but with a downloaded offline map of that area. We do 6-7 caches over a few hours that way.
@WedaPashi that other tracking app you suggested a while back is good :) I also have the OS Locate app now too

12:51 PM
@WedaPashi is always so enthusiastic!

A: Does garlic balance your blood pressure on long walks?

Liam Does garlic balance your blood pressure on long walks? Garlic is proven to lower blood pressure. Not balance it. Though this study also suggests that the this reduction was not large enough to be statistically significant. So no garlic does not balance blood pressure, neither does it (scien...

@Liam Austrians are pretty tough people :D
Just kidding, really sick stories in that article, thx for posting.
13 deaths in less then a month close to Mont Blanc is sick
I recently read a story from two guys who climbed Mont Blanc and when they came back to the hut they were totally excited and said it was their first climb on a mountain. They gave a special hint to the guys in the hut like if it's an extreme insider: "Use crampons!"
There is also a waste problem on Mont Blanc and last year I think they banned camping. They are maybe going to only allow ascending the mountain when you use a local mountain guide...
