6:11 AM
Morning everyone!
I've added some more data into the answer:
13
Q: What makes certain mountains more dangerous than others?

soph-eWhy do mountains like K2, Nanga Parbat and Annapurna (36 successful attempts, 47 failed) have higher fatality rates than, say, Everest or Cho Oyu (79 successful attempts, 28 failed)? (source) Can I use these statistics to determine what aspect of mountaineering is the most dangerous, between the...

If you are interested @soph @liam @ara @Rory

6:51 AM
@WedaPashi Lovely - thanks!
And good morning all

@Rory: Hey there! Been busy?

@WedaPashi has been a busy week. Usual day job plus interviewing folks for roles.

Morning

@Rory: Did I miss the chance to work with ya? :P Oh dear, I did!

@Rory I'm tired and read 'roles' as 'rolls' then was like... I want a roll...
@soph I actually enjoyed the storyline. I'm almost maxed on it. The multi player is fun.

6:59 AM
@Ara: Morning!

@Weda morning dude

@Aravona Haven't had a chance to play it, yet, but my eldest is very taken with it.

Q: Black bears and torch lights

Helm HammerhandI am hiking in black bear country (no other kinds of bears there). It's dark, I have a whistle hanging around my neck to scare away such a potential bear and I'm using my torch light to be able to see the path. Now, for some reason, the light and noise I made till now were not enough to scare aw...

Ben didn't even seem to read the question, just jumped straight to talking about food, which the question doesnt mention?
The more I am on TGO the more I find certain people do not read questions at all.

7:15 AM
@Aravona he does have a point though - bears aren't generally a risk to people (there are exceptions, especially if you come across a starving or ill bear, or you are in polar bear territory) but generally it's all about the food
@Aravona but I agree with this

@Rory I've seen videos of bears in peoples swimming pools etc. Whilst unlikely to meet one it doesn't mean you cannot be one of the unlucky few to meet a braver bear.

@Ara: True that. Hilariously put! :D

At least he should have amswered the OPs question before moving onto the unlikelihoods. It's unlikely I'm going to fall down the stairs this morning. But could still happen.

@Aravona true

Actually I'm more likely to fall UP the stairs... I'm a clutz :P

7:32 AM
@Ara: hehe
@Rory: How old are your kids?

8:31 AM
Oh look, a tumbleweed

8:49 AM
@WedaPashi 14, 12 and 8
@Aravona sorry - was holding a mentoring meeting with one of my team

@Ara: Hahaha.. Tumbletweed :D
@Rory: Nice!

@Rory no worries :P just thought I'd say something since the chat was so quiet haha

@Aravona busy day today in Scotland.
you know
preparing for International Talk Like a Pirate Day tomorrow

@Ara: What domain you work in? I know you are a programmer. What languages you code in?
@Ara @Rory looks like @liam is still having issue with computer! #BurnTheComputers

@WedaPashi Nah - I was a programmer 20 years ago
I'm in information security
which covers everything from website security to lockpicking, building protection, social engineering etc

9:03 AM
@Rory: Great! I always wanted to get into Cyber Security domain. But then I was mesmerized by the sensors and Tux and Kernel.. So I ended up into Embedded technologies

@WedaPashi Cyber security in embedded tech is becoming more and more important as we get more mobile/embedded tech and the whole Internet of Things. Good area to start brushing up on secure code dev :-)

Morninig!
I've been busy agin
hopefully gotten to the bottom of my problems now
touch wood

9:24 AM
@liam: Morning buddy!

Morning @WedaPashi

@liam: Its 3 pm here :-)

Hence: happy diurnal isomorphism :-P

@WedaPashi 10.30am here. I was stuck in the office late trying to fix this. Still thurs night = climbing!

@liam : Thats great! I can't climb till this month end. Its still raining here, so no climbs. I'll probably starts climbing in early October. As of now I am more into cycling, but I just might consider going to the indoor climbing wall nearby from next week. :-)

9:35 AM
@Weda PHP mostly
@Liam yay for climbing!

@Ara: Okay. Nice.

@Rory Super busy day I imagine, may the force be with you.

@Aravona lolz
@WedaPashi This is indoor climbing
My local climbing gym

9:50 AM
@Liam is it easy to get into climbing?
Down here the indoor ones seem rather expensive

view of the central bouldering area at my climbing centre
actually, have a look at these: my little ones many years ago:
I just rediscovered these pics when trying to find something that shows our climbing centre
Wow. This was from my charity 1-mile climb:

@Rory: Great pics. A picture is worth a thousand words!

That last one is a 25 metre climb - guess how many of them you need to do for a mile.....
a nice edge here on the leading side of the arena
and this is my nemesis:

@Rory epic!

Check it out - Europe's biggest indoor climbing facility

10:01 AM
@Aravona yes. Very. Especially something like bouldering, you only need a pair of shoes and an indoor venue
the indoor places can be a little expensive, I pay £8. But that's my gym. Gym memberships are more!

@Liam what is bouldering exactly?

@Aravona climbing on a boulder
doesn't need a harness
usually you have crash mats
check my first two pics
good for core skills as you don't worry about the falling
and you can try and try and try a move till you get it right

@Rory that sounds really cool... not sure if there is anywhere around here that does it though.

user116848
hi

10:09 AM
@Aravona you can do it yourself. Various folks I know take a folding crashpad along to a local rock and just boulder on the bottom few metres of it

@Arrow howdy

generally I'd recommend with a friend, even if you are staying low - just in case
@Arrowfar morning

user116848
:-)

@Rory that'd be a good idea but we dont have rocks here in chalk land....

user116848
@RoryAlsop Looks like fun!

10:10 AM
@Aravona chalk climbing is fun, and can be really fast - loads of holds, generally

user116848
Is that you dude?

@Arrowfar yup

user116848
@RoryAlsop hah :D

except for the two children pics - that's my eldest two about 8 years ago

@Rory I can't thimk of anywhere within 25 miles that would have an area of exposed chalk either to be fair... Unless someone here knows of a good place to Boulder near the Chilterns?

10:14 AM
@Aravona Amersham has an indoor place that has a good reputation - is that near you?

@Rory yeah but last I checked was pricey as hell.

@Aravona fair enough

@Rory I shall recheck :)

this is a pic of our one from the start of the Sky Ride - an assault course suspended 20 metres up :-)
Basically this whole section is half a quarry - with a wall down the middle and a roof over it. The other half is an outdoor climbing centre :-)

urgh their website is foul
shoot them.
Who approved this: theclimbamersham.co.uk

10:19 AM
@Aravona that's horrible!

@Rory isn't it? Prices have dropped a bit though

I can't find any outdoor climbs in the chilterns - it sounds lovely: gentle rolling hills etc

@Rory yeah that's us! Lovely down here an almost every walk you do ends in a pub.

user116848
Totally different subject, but people who climb other stuff (like Buildings) as in Parkour etc. are at too much risk I guess. Because they don't use safety gear.

For now the indoor climb is too pricey (I know £9 isn't much but going weekly would build up...) as we are house buying lol
@Arrow two words, Darwin Awards.

10:26 AM
@Arrowfar I dunno - I pay for my eldest's fees at his parkour and stunt gymnastics club. Looks safer than what we used to do as kids...

user116848
There are many Parkour related videos on Youtube. It looks kinda fun but pointless :)

@Arrowfar search for parkour fail videos - ouch!
It's not pointless - amazing for your core fitness and strength, and some of the skills do transfer across to climbing

Depends on what you are doing @Arrow - some guys just go out and try it, some do it in controlled areas. Anyone who just tries jumping around on a building is likely going to hurt themselves a few times - but as @Rory said it's a good way to get fit and... there is risk in all sport.
Some of the jumps the free runners can do is amazing, I could not jump X feet and do a roll and get up again, I would be a pile of smush

user116848
@RoryAlsop Oh, yes Gyms are safe :-)

@Aravona Hamish's squad played the part of the tornado in a stage production of Wizard of Oz. they were amazing - long flying dives into forward rolls, spinning human pyramids, back flips off walls etc
More than I have ever been able to do :-(

10:31 AM
@Rory Hamish is the best name ever.

@Aravona :-) thanks

user116848
@Aravona This is the first time I have heard of that. I had to google it :)

And that sounds fricking awesome! Your whole family just sounds epic @Rory
@Arrow sorry heard of what?

user116848
@Aravona Darwin Award

@Aravona thanks again! I just have a very no-nonsense approach to the world. My dad was an Antarctic/Arctic explorer/pilot dude, so he just basically encouraged us to do things, rather than sit around waiting for something

10:33 AM
@Arrow lol! Oh they can be so funny... Disterbingly stupid but morbidly amusing.

and that's what I encourage my kids, my team at work, my bandmates etc to do

@Rory sounds the best way to live imo! And as soon as @Dyna and I have our house / wedding out the way we will be doing much more of the same

user116848
@Aravona yanno there is a greyish arrow pointed left in the chat here (every post has it) which you can use to relate to a previous comment. To avoid confusion about who is saying what!

Which is why I am losing heart in moderating Productivity.SE - so many questions come in like,"I'm getting close to my exams but haven't studied enough as I go out drinking and playing too much. What should I do?" - and the answer I want to give is, "You know what to do: do stuff! Study, read, work hard - once you have the quals you need for the job you want, then you get to play"
but I don't want to be that impolite/impatient
Right - calls over for now - time to decide what costume to wear to go and vote...

@Atrow... Ya know not everyone uses the desktop browser chat?

10:37 AM
@Aravona yeah - it fails on mobile

@Rory have fun voting! May you vote freely and drink unwisely after

@Aravona heh

user116848
@Aravona So in mobile there is some chat features missing? I didn't know. I don't use internet on mobile phone.

@Arrow it is less functional yes...

@Arrowfar it is very limited on mobile - no linking to previous messages etc. In fact none of the little nav functions at left or right of posts

user116848
10:38 AM
Oh, I see.

user116848
So that's the reason of Aravona's confusion here

@Arrow I am not confused. Don't be rude.
You are the one who made an assumption.
Even when I do use the desktop chat I rarely bother to 'reply' to the correct message
It's quicker not to.

user116848
@Aravona Oh, no. I meant in a friendly manner :-) Sorrrrry again. In chat there are no facial expressions etc. so it is very easy to take something as rude. Honestly, I did think about the rude part.

@Arrow it was not taken friendly and I expect and apology

user116848
@Aravona I apologized.

10:44 AM
@Arrow not a proper one, 'sorrrry' is not a word.

Folks - I don't think this needs to have escalated like this.

user116848
I should have used 'lol' or a 'emoticon' in my sentence above.

@Rory apologies.
@Arrow you should not have made the statement full stop.
Regardless. Never mind it now.

user116848
@Aravona I apologize for my comment above. I shouldn't have made it.

I think it is that limitation of text speak - Arrow hadn't realised you were on mobile and that it had no way to do this, and was pointing out how to make chat work more obviously - Or that's how I read it

10:47 AM
@Rory the issue was not that but how he claimed I was confused over it. Which is an assumption based on nothing. One should not go around stating others are confused over something when they are not. Forgive me but my upbringing taught me that kind of thing is rude.
As I said though, never mind it now.

user116848
I am done for today! Bye!

@Arrow have a good day dude

11:23 AM
I don't understand how people can stay calm when buying a house, I'm going insane

That one question by @soph has earned me so much reputation this week :D 511 in a week. 3 more days to go :-)

11:47 AM
Lol @Weda grats

12:10 PM
@Rory @RussellSteen @liam @Ara : Is it Cross-posting?

Q: Accommodation on the European E-paths

Michael PellI am researching the E-paths and trying to determine what the accommodation situation is. Am I allowed to camp wherever it makes sense? Are there specified locations? Do I have to stay at inns?

2
A: Lodging while hiking the European E-paths

WedaPashiIts nearly just the half of what you would have expected to see. Honestly I had head-scratched many details for European Long Distance Trails. But I realized that they are so long that even if I plan to complete one of them in sections, it would take multiple years considering my current economic...

Both the questions are from the same user. Both appear on-topic.

@WedaPashi I'd leave a comment on the one on Travel - letting the OP know cross posting isn't usually a good thing here, and asking which site he'd like th epost to remain on
It could be on topic on either, but it's usually bad form to cross post like that - we can always migrate if a post doesn't get enough attention

user116848
@WedaPashi hi!

@Rory: Okay. I just put a comment regarding the same :-) Thanks!

@WedaPashi yup - good comment. I upvoted it

@Rory: :-)
@Arrowfar: hi there mate!

12:18 PM
@Weda out of interest in your answer there which Rambler websites did you look at? Ramblers themselves are a membership based group :)
@Weda also good call on the double posting.

@Ara: I referred a few websites, and that was a couple of years ago..
Let me dig through bookmarks
Traildinho I remember for sure. It wasn't british though
@Ara: Miss-spelled.. Its Traildino.. the 'nho' part says that I m a soccer fan :-) :D

@Weda I meant the one you posted an hour ago... but you've updated the link anyway

@Weda that one :)

user116848
Oh, I didn't know humans have terminal velocity (Room's topic looks nice!)

@Arrowfar oh, of course. It's easy to test, too...

Lol @Arrow @Rory test it like they did the cats

user116848
12:32 PM
@RoryAlsop Like?

hahaha.. Ask @liam

1 - find high thing
2 - jump
.
5 - profit
no, I mean, you just measure your airspeed
turns out it's about 120 mph
in a broadly flat attitude - you can go faster head down

@Arrow they tested the terminal velocity of cats by chucking them out a multi story window... Something like between floors 3 and 13 the cat will survive and land... Due to hitting terminal velocity?

user116848
And I guess in Parkour people break this up by going into forward roll motion. Which looks kinda awesome.

Whoever came up with the experiment was clearly a tad mad

12:36 PM

user116848
@RoryAlsop Also in 'Abseiling' and 'rappelling', right?

@Arrowfar abseiling and rappelling are incredibly safe by comparison

user116848
@RoryAlsop Yes, you are right :-)

user116848
@RoryAlsop Yes. I have watched that video. Those guys are tough lol

@Arrowfar tough/mad :-)

user116848
12:39 PM
Yes, tell me about it :)

@Rory did you choose a costume by the by?

@Aravona Yep - kilt, studded leather jacket, handcuffs and chain belt; and for my 8 year old assistant - she was mostly in denim, with denim shorts, pink crocs, and rocking a Rapunzel hairstyle

@Rory I'm rocking a Rapunzel 1m long plait at the mo too ;) she clearly has good taste

One local representative from each side. The Yes lady was looking very glum and not making eye contact, and the No (our local Labour guy - very nice, but talks a lot) got into conversation with the only other person there, so I really didn't have an appreciative audience
:-(

Awww! I bet you looked badass

12:45 PM
@Rory: hahaha.. @Ara is right may be :D

I have a question I wish to post but not sure I am wording it well...

@Aravona or possibly like a dad having a sad mid-life crisis :-)

@Rory all dads are epic :) mine still says 'freez-amundos' when its cold :P

@Aravona lol

Basically my question boils down to: If a member of your team falls sick mid-trek, and you are rather far from the closest amenity, what is the best cause of action to ensure the safety of the indivudual as well as the team?
Is said question too broad?

12:48 PM
@Ara: I don;t think so its too broad. Sounds worth asking!

@Weda crazy the things I think of when unwell... hah

@Aravona I think as long as you point out that it isn't a particular illness, but a general: what essential activities (first aid, signage, movements) should the team do when someone is sick

@Rory I think I've worded it like that :)

@Ara @Rory: Even sticking to the First Aid part sounds good enough

@Weda first aid I always think of as injury more than illness, would you say it covers both?

12:50 PM
I'd say so.

user116848
@RoryAlsop So, I liked one answerer on the main site who said in their answer that in trekking, climbing etc. don't let your team members get bored (by making frequent communications and asking how they are doing etc.) Come to think of it that plays a large role in outdoors. And that kinda thing is free too :-)

user116848
+1 from me for that answerer :P

@Arrow definitely, and you are never ever too old to play i-spy

@Ara: If first aid is only about injury, then why would someone have aspirin in the medical kit at first place.. or even Metroniazole, or Domperidone

I think it covers both - it's what you do in those initial minutes, where it can make a real difference

12:53 PM
@soph: Hi there!

@Rory cool :) also saw an answer of yours recently on sun allergy and added a comment to your answer :)

@weda good morning! :0

@soph howdy

user116848
@soph-e Morning! :)

@Aravona oooh - that's not fun; being an outdoor person and having a sun sensitivity :-(
@soph-e afternoon

12:57 PM
@ara @arrow @rory how's everyone doing today?

user116848
@soph-e Good. Thanks! And you?

I'm doing pretty okay, managed to wake up on time to get to class, progress!

user116848
I guess no one from US here today

@Rory yeah mine thankfully gets better when the summer wears on

Q: What to do if a team member falls sick?

AravonaRecently I feel ill whilst car camping and it made me consider the situations when not around amenities. In addition to this I recently was part of a four man one dog team climbing Snowdon and one of us fell ill with a severe migraine, and we carried on despite the migraine as the team member wis...

Todays task is to replicate everything that I've done on my own machine over the last week on everyone else's machine...

12:59 PM
@Rory @Liam @Weda @soph feel free to edit to help - I know I don't make sense at times

user116848
@Liam hi pal!

@Liam oh goodness, long task?

@Aravona Proving that way! It's not bad, just having to document it
It's a lot of jumping though hooops!

@Aravona minor grammer edit, but the q looks grand

@Rory yeah... don't tell @Dyna how I typoed D:
@Liam my most hated thing is where I do so much to a server I'm not sure what fixed it... and have two more to do...

1:02 PM
@Ara: hahahahaha @Dyna can always see the edit summary :D :D
@liam: Replicating.. sounds boring..

@Weda shh don't tell him how to do that

@weda thanks for the details you added to your answer to my question :)

@soph: My pleasure :-)
@Ara: lolzz. He'll figure it out :D

1:20 PM
@Weda probably lol. I've a nasty headache

1:35 PM
@Ara: I am a regular with Migraines :-(
@Ara; I have tried answering your question.. But its more restricted upto stupid Diarrhea and Headache.
@Ara: Thanks for the edits.

@Weda some follow up on your answer as 1 is curiousity but for me 2. didn't actually answer what to do if you have to stay put... do you keep the person isolated? do you asign a single carer, do they have to have completely seperate food / water from everyone else, etc..?
I know for the most part it is common sense, but for me for example, when Dyna was looking after me when sick, he still stayed in the same tent / aresa etc etc.
Mostly your advice was 'just turn around' I want to know a lot more about if you have to stay put?
I obviously wouldn't do the top gear advice of.. leave a man behind, at any point the person can't be on their own lol.
For me personally, any member of a team is vital too :) but then I only trek with friends and they are important people :P

1:56 PM
Though @Weda I have to say thank you for one thing... I'm now checking if my medicinal allergy is life threatening... If it is I think I'm going to consider a medical bracelet... In case I'm out cold on a trek or something...

@Ara: hahaha.. I am still horrified with how did I post that Dex question

@Weda I'm sure it was fine really, I did wonder why you have Amoxicillin in a first aid kit though, is it recommended to take broad spectrum anti biotics with you, or is it a 'if you already are being treated with it' issue?

Amox with controlled dosage (often single dose) helps with skin irritation/infection.
Amox helps fighting bacterial infection.. Trekkers are most vulnerable to bacterial infections I beleive.

@Weda is it freely available in India then? Here you would have to go to a doctor to get it so would already be prescribed it.

Yes it is.

2:06 PM
Also as a broad spectrum anti biotic, you need to take a 'good bacteria' drink afterwards to help you recover. Hospital advised that to my future father in law
@WedaPashi Oh that's kinda cool - I have Amoxicillin for blood, I have taken it more than I think I've had hot meals

@Ara: Aww, thats kinda bad..

@Weda was awful until I had my tonsils out - ear infections every few months for like 9 years

The only medicine that I've taken so far this entire year is Aspirin.

@Weda I believe Amox is prescription only, or at least I've never seen it off the counter
I'm on Lansoperazole for Acid Reflux, 30mg - but I try not to take it and change my diet for it, the meds are for the worst weeks
Though now I'm considering a medical bracelet if my allergy is a bad one... Thanks to your answer @Weda :)

2:25 PM
@Ara: Welcome. I have added some more details

@Weda very good answer now thanks :) all questions sated.
And luckily my medical allergy is non-life threatening according to my mother, which is good news!

@Ara: Cheers to that!
@Rory @Ara @liam @soph : I hit 5K! Yayy!

@Weda congrats!

@Ara: Thanks :-)

@weda nice!

2:36 PM
@soph: Thanks :)

man, climbing has too many terms. Sport climbing, trad climbing, lead climbing, free climbing, free solo climbing, redpointing, on-sighting, flashing...

@WedaPashi well done!

i get so confused when i read about whatever new and exciting achievements in the climbing world

@Aravona I tried that one - but hate it. My current usual meds justinvolve following painkillers every day with Rennie's :-)

@soph it's an exciting climbing achievement if I make it up the stairs without falling over in my world ;P
2

2:39 PM
@ara yeah sounds about right for me too!

@Rory I tend to aim for diet based AR soothers.

@Ara @soph: You can do better.. Its just that you may not have tried climbing

@ara I bought new shoes figuring I'd trip less often if my sole wasn't half ripped off, but no. I still trip on invisible cracks in the floor. It's hopeless!

@Aravona Ahhh - I'm not a full on classic Scottish diet, but I do like things that aren't necessarily the healthhiest

@soph: I better not talk about terms in climbing.. @Rory and @liam are far better guys to talk about that. :-)

2:41 PM
@weda I tried climbing but it's hard to get into when none of my close friends climb

@WedaPashi I really enjoy climbing, but I don't know what redpointing or flashing are, and I'm too much of a chicken for free solo
@soph-e I've always managed to find folks at each office I work

@rory free solo is crazy

it's worth asking
@soph-e Especially for those of us terrified of heights!

@rory yeah the ropes make up for the craziness of climbing up high, but without the ropes...nope!

@soph: Do not make your friends Climb, instead make friends who climb :-)
@ROry: Exactly

2:46 PM
@weda before befriending anyone else i'll test them on their climbing skillz

@soph: Sounds like a plan.

@weda I've been trying to get my friends into climbing but they're all broke college students

@soph: Is there a climbing gym nearby? May be you could get started with simple routes with their trainers.

@soph-e it is one of the cheapest sprts to begin
it just gets more expensive as you get better and want more challenge

@Rory: +100 to that mate, And I can get here chatty as much I can :D

2:54 PM
@Rory on not healthy... We have found when AR is bad or I've been unwell the best cauae of action is junk food... Anything else upsets my stomach... After the bug in weymouth it was a mcdonalds cheeseburger that saved me lol

It's not cheap...the climbing gym nearby costs 15$ to get in, or ~70$ per month
80$ for good shoes, 50$ for a harness, 15$ for a carabiner, it adds up!
50$ for a climbing course to be allowed to belay, too :P

@Ara: Ttats why I am a total veggie! Touch wood, I am never on medicine expect for an aspirin once in a week.

@Aravona noooo - say it's not so. I eat no junk food - in fact the entire family avoids them. I have visited McDonalds twice - once in Prague (where they did sell champagne, which was nice) and once back when one opened in Edinburgh....

@Weda I cannot be vegetarian even if I wanted to be...

@Ara: Hmm.. As long as you eat well and healthy, it doesn't matter :-)

3:05 PM
@Rory when my mum left I used to just cook myself chicken nuggets and chips almost every night so I lived off junk food... And after that I went through depression and was rather thin. I assume it's just my body reacts better to junk food now because of that!

All I care about is: Life should be Large, rather than being Long :-)

@Weda I'd rather have a long life than a large one O.o

@Ara: Thats totally fine :-) Perspectives..

I value a good end of life over a long or large life :P

@Weda probably because 'large' here in the south is a polite way to say fat haha!

3:15 PM
@Ara: No.. I didn't mean fat. Large is more traveled, more climbed..
Who watches Sherlock Holmes series? I loved all seasons so far!

@weda the BBC series?
that one is great!

@soph: yeah, that one..

@Weda that's an interesting way to put it I see what you mean! We in Bucks would probably say a fuller life :3

There's another new sherlock holmes series where they cast watson as a woman, I have many doubts as to that series' success

@Weda @soph still never seen the bbc sherlocks.

@Ara: Do see it. Simply great!

@ara it's a really good series, the camera work is stunning, and so's the music...and the plot is pretty cool too ;)

@soph: The other one you talked about is gonna fail.. Its a personal opinion though..

(Hi) I agree about the US show, if it hasn't failed already.

user116848
@soph-e Well, that too bad :D It's US series btw. Very nice cast too :)

@arrow is it like the CSI series?

user116848
@soph-e No, it is not like one of those boring CSI's. They have some 'machine' concept there that picks up the names of people in danger etc. Here:-
