5:58 AM
Hello everyone!

1 hour later…
7:19 AM
morning all

7:39 AM
Morning
Cheers @nhinkle

@Liam how's it going?

8:23 AM
@Aravona not bad! You? thinking about heading up to snowdonia this weekend, if it stops raining!

@aravona @liam: Morning!

@Liam that sounds awesome! We should be kayaking this weekend if the kayaks arrive (in one piece this time!)
@wedaPashi morning!

I still have no plans for weekend :(
I just might go somewhere

@WedaPashi I wish I could'l 'just go somewhere' but everything needs planning!!

8:38 AM
Yep advantages of living in Treuddyn, I'm 30 mins drive from the mountains

@liam @aravona: Yeah, I am nearly 30 min ride from mountains and nearly 100 miles from rain forests :-)

@WedaPashi My nearest rain forest is some distance
I think I might have to buy a new car

@liam: Aww

mmmmmmmmmmm

@Liam: I can't drive yet :P But yes, I m planning to learn driving and then get a car.

8:42 AM
@Liam @WedaPashi I have some local woodland around but otherwise just farmers fields.... luckily lots of canals / rivers!

@WedaPashi My girlfriends compaining here piece of crap car is a death trap now we live in the country so she wants mine
which gives me an excuse to buy an impractal and expensive to run car that I don't really need
Though I'll prob talk myself out of it and buy something sensible

@Liam: yeah, exactly. Invest on something that you really need, not on what you really want

Is this page editable?
It's pretty vague and un-useful

@liam: I don't think its editable for users like us. Vague and un-useful in what sense?

@WedaPashi Well it doesn't really say anything.....
It just vaguely says The Great Outdoors Stack Exchange is for people who love outdoor activities, excursions, and outdoorsmanship.
The rest of it might as well not be there
it doesn't help guide new users to what's on topic
Compare it to the SO one
Maybe it's a Beta thing

8:57 AM
@liam: IMHO, its designed acc to how a new user will go through this page. It links the user to outdoors.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask page
Which guides user regarding whats on-topic and whats not
Yeah, there can be improvement in this part: The Great Outdoors Stack Exchange is for people who love outdoor activities, excursions, and outdoorsmanship. that being a very vague introduction

@WedaPashi Didn't notice the off topic was more comprehensive

@Liam what you want is the Litchfield Forester STi (the 400bhp version) - it's a brilliantly capable off roader that is also a crazy performance car. The chassis is that of a Subaru Forester, but it can do 190mph. 0-60 is 4 seconds or less. Mine is the most practical and most fun car I have ever owned, and I have had some stupid cars! It's also cheap-ish, and can do 35 mpg (on the motorway, anyway. It's about 8mpg on the track)
@WedaPashi most sites do get around to updating that before graduating. Worth raising a meta post for it at some point

@Liam; Oh, I just came to know something that really appeared funny (to me at least, if not others) that On-Topic for this site link on outdoors.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask page brings you back to Asking page

@Liam ... I work with cars haha, know Jack about em

@RoryAlsop That looks like an insurance nightmare?! :) ha ha

9:04 AM
Frankly speaking, if I were a new user, I would have never understood whats on-topic for this site using these pages.

@Liam Group 20. Luckily I have >10 years no claims

yes!
#cliche

It really upset my senior partner - his £90k Porsche was slower to 100mph than my <£20k car. And he could only just fit in a set of golf clubs, whereas I could fit a family of 5, tents, climbing gear, a wakeboard etc
3

@roryalsop: Looks like Lovely car for car-camping :-)

28% if the way through the tag wiki editor badeg :)
@RoryAslop I get mocked at work for my focus, but she is great for camping and kayaking! Folded seats down we can easily get a weeks worth of gear in!

9:10 AM
@WedaPashi it's perfect
My mate Dave has a heavily customised Ford Transit. He keeps a couple of kayaks, kite-surfing kit, wetsuits and drysuits and a matterss in it so he can head off anywhere at any time. It's very practical

9:23 AM
@RoryAlsop minus mattress that's what I want eventually
Need my own house first... I wanted to buy this adorable fox doorstop the other day then said to my other half 'Maybe we should wait until we own some doors...'
2

@Aravona heh

9:39 AM
@RoryAslop ... close though, one more week to wait actually then we can talk to a bank manager

@Aravona excellent
best of luck

@RoryAslop thanks... think we are going to need it lol!

@Liam @RoryAlsop: I don't know abt the pretty women in the first pic, but that Jeep is what I am lookiing forward to buy.
I know its not suitable for Car-Camping. But in india, we don't have nay trend of Car-camping thing.

@WedaPashi I would love to have a landrover defender.

@Aravona They are superb. We had a couple over the years when we were in the Falklands. Really simple to maintain with home tools. Ours had bumper jacks as well, so we could get ourselves out of peat bogs easily. And if you have the snorkel you can drive straight through rivers. And heaps of storage inside or on the roof

9:57 AM
@RoryAlsp ... jealous

@Aravona you know you can just type the first three characters of a name, and if there is a unique name that matches, it will work
eg @Ara will just ping you
And @Rory is me (until another Rory joins this chat)
saves you typing too much. Or you can just click on the name to autolink

@Aravona The outdoor car of choice

10:12 AM
@Rory oh lol no I didnt. And @Liam :)
I typo a LOT on my phone so shirtening would help haha
... shortening
I just tormented myself by finding a gorgrous flat I now want to buy :(

shirtening
room topic changed to The Great Outdoors: who said that? [banana-measurements] [because-freedom] [desolate] [enthusiasm-of-weda] [queen-of-tgo] [shirtening]
LOL

@Liam: LOL

@Liam LOL
You should always be shirtening things

And @ara copied + pasted.

@Weda nope... too fricking hard to copy and paste on an S3 lol

10:18 AM
@aravona: hehe
@liam @ara @rory: I just looked at Indian Team for One-Dayers. Its full of all young and inexperienced guys.

Especially in this chat which for mobile is very poor. Probably better on a tablet methinks!
Thank goodness its Friday - and a bank holiday weekend!

@Aravona yeah - I only found out it was a bank holiday when someone rejected a meeting invitation yesterday. You'd think I'd know better...as I work for a bank...
Still not got to grips with bank holidays - 17 years consulting meant I never had any

10:38 AM
@Rory aww yeah, I did three years self employed and damn did I get confused with days!

@RoryAlsop, @Aravona, this is why I'm happy getting a wage

@Liam same... I've worked in corporate for over a year now in two seperate jobs... finally going to be able to beg for a mortgage

1 hour later…
12:11 PM
Set up a smallish field on my lunch

Anyone doing anything interesting?

@Aravona What now?

@Liam Ah - you're level 5 now. Good work. You know there is a huge op in Manchester: Helios
I think it is this weekend. Hundreds of folks going from all over UK and Europe (and Iceland and Norway)
Ops are a good way to level up very fast

@Aravona I've just realised that might be misread. I mean't; do you mean am I doing anything now?
@RoryAlsop Prob would of been faster but for moving out to the country. I had a portal under my bedroom in Liverpool!
@RoryAlsop I'm not sure it's my kind of thing. I like playing the game but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to join in a big mass meet!

@Liam It's actually pretty good fun. You get the opportunity to meet, but then everyone scatters to do different things/take different portals etc. Then usually opportunity to meet in pub afterwards for beer and caek
Plus free swag, such as t-shirts etc

12:24 PM
@RoryAlsop I love caek
ha ha
Whoop, can protect questions

@Liam yeah I'm bored lol was just on lunch

12:40 PM
@Liam yay

@RoryAlsop Nothing to actually protect mind but hey ho

@Liam it's the thought that counts
2

@RoryAlsop ha ha#

Anyway - you need to connect your field to Sealand Industrial Estate :-)

@RoryAlsop That'd be pretty sweet

12:42 PM
:-)
Or as the message says on comms:
> Wh1teVanMan: Calling all enlightened agents, this is a call to arms. There's a big battle against the resistance tomorrow in Manchester. We're meeting at Angel Meadow (near M4 4DB) from 11.00, all levels welcome.

That is quite a bit out of my way though

ah
I find myself doing odd things. My commute home the other day was 42 miles further than it had to be. Made some cross-country fields though :-)

I've got my eye on the one on top of moel famau
@RoryAlsop Someone seems to keep it well topped up thouh

@rory @liam there is basically no ingress stuff near me, have the app - done nothing with it.

@Aravona you can add new portals you know?
There's none in my village but I've submitted about a dozen

12:51 PM
@liam at level 1?

waiting for them to come online so just busying myself till they do
Yeah I think so

I have the issue of lack of time, there isn't much I can do in my village and I don't have a long lunch hour so cannot eat and go somewhere at work to do one either

@liam I currently haven't even been able to finish the tutorial, so I'd assume I can't do that yet

even better @Aravona
9
Q: How to create/submit a portal in iOS

SysDragoniOS version of the game has recently released. I faced the idea to submit a new portal in an area where theres is a low amount of them, and all the tutorial that I found consist in "sharing" the image with NIA Service Ops or press and hold on the map inside the app to make appear a menu that cont...

12:53 PM
@Liam it has no shields on it, so as long as you go with some power cubes and a bunch of xmp, you can take it out

@liam not stupid enough to have iOS lol

@Aravona yep
@Liam madmikefalkirk has had over 5000 submitted and accepted!

@Aravona oh yeah

Dynadin still hasn't had his account fixed yet as it crashed on sign up and put him on the wrong side, rather poorly made in the case, there's been hundreds of complaints about that.

@Aravona Niantic are usually really good at fixing that
you can speak to actual individuals. Well, chat in google hangouts with them

12:55 PM
@Rory they had a 6-8week wait on it when Dyna sumbitted a reset request
Still not happened.
I think I'm just gonna trash it to be fair, stick with geocaching :)

@Aravona fair enough ;-P

@rory :)

@Aravona @RoryAlsop, I've had issues submitting portals, apparently the lead times are 2 months+ now. They seem to be having capacity issues

No news on my kayaks :/ supposed to have arrived by no

@Liam it is very variable. I have had some over 3 months, and two less than a week. So their queueueueue is not consistent

1:35 PM
Kayaks just arrived.
2

2:23 PM
@Aravona whoop

@Liam need to give them a thorough check over lol!!

@Aravona don't you do that in a version of the ice bucket challenge?
:-)

@Rory lol .... no?

find some cold water, hop in the kayak, check you are still dry = win

2:43 PM
@Rory not the best way to test a kayak for leaks lol

@Aravona no? Ahh - you do it the other way round - fill it with water and see if it leaks?

@Rory if you don't search for holes first you are just wasting time and effort. It's a pain to empty them again after being on the water. Not making that mistake again, each seam and drainage hole will be thoroughly checked out this time.

@Aravona is this a visual check, or do you use something like compressed air? I have never bought a kayak, only borrowed/rented so never needed to do this

@Rory a visual check... they are supposedly water and pressure checked as part of quality control but the last one clearly wasn't
We missed the last hole as it was in such an awkward place on the kayak
We know better this time

2:59 PM
Today is gonna longgggg day at at ofice :(
Gonna stay in working tonight :((

@WedaPashi today was a longggg day at the office, but I'm getting ready to go home for a long weekend
I feel for you

3:27 PM
@Rory: Have fun mate :-)
@soph-e: Hey there!
@nhinkle: hi there!

oh hey
how`s everyone doing today? :)

Today it was more lively in here at this room than y'day..

lively chats are good!

@soph-e hey
@soph-e Hows things?

things are good, I biked to the office this morning despite the rainy clouds and biking tends to put me in a good mood :)
I hope you guys have better weather than I have

3:39 PM
Oh Mammut why do you make such sexy ropes...
that is all

@soph-e It was throwing it down here earliuer but it's nice and sunny now. Weekend looks good
@AM_Hawk I own too many ropes as it is
@AM_Hawk "What do you want for xmas"
@AM_Hawk Rope.....
Don't you have enough ropes?
Enough.......ropes? Sorry I don't understand

@Liam Have you seen the Millet Opposit TRX 9/10
I follow "I Love Climbing" on facebook, they had a contest recently...I won the rope hasn't arrive yet
it's 30m 10mm and 50m 9mm, use it for projecting sport routes...pretttty cool adn very excited, can't wait till I get it!
@Liam And for the record, none can own too many ropes haha

free ropes, musta been like an early xmas for you ;)

You Know It! it was a cool contest...you ahd to guess how many ppl would enter their email for a chance to win, person who guessed teh closest to the actual number won!
I waited till 11:58pm and guessed based off the number of Likes and Shares the prize got that day

oh wow, for a good guess you'd have to try and extrapolate from the number of followers....and be p. lucky!
oh, smart haha

3:46 PM
@AM_Hawk That's a new one on me! Makes it quite heavy to haul in and out though, no?
80M is a LOT of rope!

Ya, it's 63g/m so works out to 5kg(12lbs)
luckily the area that I will be doing my projecting is a 3min approach from the parking lot haha
2
anywhere else i agree, too much rope to haul...

@AM_Hawk yeah over that distance, who cares!

@AM_Hawk @soph-e @Liam: Whats the plan for weekend?

@WedaPashi I'm hoping to do a bit of scrambling with the girlfriend (if we can find a dog sitter)
Route called bristley ridge in snowdonia
@WedaPashi You?

My only plan is a housewarming party to attend on sunday, since it's on the other side of town it might be a good excuse to do a 30km bike ride there, and then back

3:55 PM
Take in cantilever stone

ohhhh that looks like a fun place

@liam: I'll be working tomorrow as well, and that sucks a bigtime. :( But I am gonna go for a ride tomorrow night and be back on Sunday afternoon, so that I can watch Premier League on Tele. Can't trek/hike, the toe if you can remember.
@soph-e: A good ride make a day perfect!

oo lunch time, toodles!

@soph-e toodles...lol

;)

3:59 PM
@WedaPashi Who you support? Or do you mean the cricket?
Girlfriends just informed me here arms bust so no scrambling... :(

@liam: I am referring to English Premier League
@Liam: I support Liverpool. And I know you are an Everton fan :D

@WedaPashi You would call me a "bluenose" and I would call you a "kopite"
FYI

@Liam: LOL :D
@soph-e: What part of the world are you from?

4:18 PM
@WedaPashi Bouldering&Camping at 'Half Way Log Dump"...Funny name I know but one of the best Bouldering spots in Ontario!

@AM_Hawk Reminds me of St Bees
But warmer

This is at a place called "Badami" in India
its a beautiful place :-)
Nearly a 300 miles from where I am.
@AM_Hawk: Sounds exciting :-) whats with the name? "Half way long dump"

@AM_Hawk My girldfriend used to live in ontario
and whistler
Home time
Bank holiday this week so I'll porb be back Tues
Have a nice weekend ya'll

4:38 PM
@Liam: Take care dude. have fun!
@imsodin: Hi there
@kevin: Hi Kevin!

@WedaPashi good morning

@nhinkle: Hey there! Good morning to you! I am in India and its already 10.20 pm here :-)
@nhinkle: Nice webpage Nathan :-)

@WedaPashi Hi

@Kevin: How are the things at your end?

@WedaPashi A bit hectic

4:50 PM
@Kevin: Oh, that bad. Work?

@WedaPashi I honestly don't know what the deal is with the name haha

@Kevin: Actually same here. I came early in office today morning and I am gonna be in office the whole night. Just having a timeout to relax a bit, meanwhile the kernel gets compiled :-)
@am_hawk: Ok. Looks a like a good place though.

@WedaPashi if you're not into bouldering, right around the corner is "Lion's Head" a much better name
@WedaPashi Badami looks like quite the cool place!

@am_hawk: This too looks a brilliant place to be at.
@am_hawk: Yeah, its good. With all the old temples and Caves "Badami" is getting a bit crowded these days. But yeah, most of the tourists don't bother to wander in the boulders where we get to climb. I am not a too good kind of a climber though, love climbing there..

cool
The only trouble with Lion's Head is you need to rappel down to a hanging belay for every climb...If you can't climb out it is a 2.5 hour walk through dense sharp bushes hahaha i've heard some pretty good horror stories
the routes are hard too, majority are in the 5.12a-5.13d range

4:58 PM
@am_hawk: Oh, thats tough for me :-)

@wedaPashi I'm in Montreal, Canada, it's only 1pm here!

@soph-e: Ok. Good

5:13 PM
@WedaPashi do you know if there are some particular matches I should look out for in the premier league? I like soccer but never watched any of the league games, I don't know which matchups might be more interesting!

@WedaPashi which one is that?
I'm taking a climbing class this winter, and a mountaineering class. Looking forward to it!

@nhinkle whereabouts will you be mountaineering?

@soph-e I'm in Oregon, so I presume when we do our trip(s?) it'll be to somewhere in the Cascades. My dad's seen classes from my university up at Mt Hood

I had my first mountaineering experience early this june, did a ~6000m summit in Peru and I still can't get over how great of an experience it was

@soph-e: Umm Premier league is pretty exciting. But look out for fixtures that has these teams playing: Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Horspur

5:20 PM
Wow... that's a pretty tall peak.

@nhikle: I really don't know how much one would learn out of a class, but yeah proper mentoring and guidance is much needed with Climbing and Mountaineering

Highest I've ever climbed is about 14k, but that was hikable, not a climb per se.

@soph-e: Oh, 6000 mtr is pretty much a good altitude. Kudos to that! Keep trekking!

@WedaPashi thanks, I'll check out the schedules for those games and see which ones I can catch in the near future!

@WedaPashi the classes are offered through my university. The "class" is mostly what you say, mentoring and guidance. More experienced people showing you the ropes, figuratively and literally.

5:22 PM
good classes are really important for mountaineering moreso than climbing (i would think), there are many lifesaving skills to use

@Soph-e have you climbed at Val-David?
Val-Morin

@AM_hawk no! I've been meaning to find places nearby but didn't have the time yet
what is there at val-morin?

@soph-e: Ah, I believe the other way round. Mentoring and guidance is much much needed in Climbing.
@nhikle: 14K is a Good height. How much altitude did you gain?

@soph-e I'm in Toronto...I usually go down to Red River Gorge in Kentucky or the Gunks and the Daks haven't made a trip to Val-David yet but from what I've read there's over 500 established routes(Sport and Trad)

I've been to the Daks a handful of times so far, we did a weekend on Mt. Marcy (winter camping, it was freezing!) to prepare for Peru. Not comparable, still fun!

5:26 PM
@WedaPashi (feet of course... 14k meters would be quite high). About 3000 ft of elevation gain on the hike.

@nhinkle I am jealous of your location...Smith Rock is one of the most developped sport climbing areas and so many bolted multipitch routes! you ahve such a big playground haha

@AM_Hawk I plan on trying the outdoor rock climbing walls at Rigaud (closer to the city for me), I just have to find other climbing who can show me the ropes (literally, I have only basic rock climbing knowledge)

@nhikle: That was obvious. Quite high? Oh, that would be top of the world.

14k meters is twice everest, isn<t it? :P

I think they mean 14k feet

5:27 PM
Well let's see. That one (Mt Dana) is actually 13k feet, and about 3000 ft of elevation gain. I've also gone up White Mountain (which unfortunately has a road to the top), which is 14k feet but only about 2500 ft of elevation gain.

@AM_Hawk Of course they did. :-)

And then South Sister which I think I posted a picture of in here recently is 10.5k feet, and 4900 ft of elevation gain on the hike.

I've been up at 14k Metres a couple times, it's really high...
I was in a plane...

@AM_Hawk it is quite nice.

@AM_Hawk I didn't know Val-Morin had rock climbing routes, I'll need to look into it

5:28 PM
@am_hawk: LOL :D

@AM_Hawk it is pretty nice having such good access to nice outdoor recreation areas.

@Nhinkle I'm jealous of most of the west coast for this, the Outdoors lifestyle seems very strong there. Visiting Vancouver made me interested in seeing more of the outdoor life!

This weekend we're going to go explore around newberry crater a bit.
Newberry Volcano (with Newberry Caldera) is a large potentially active shield volcano located 40 miles (64 km) east of the Cascade Range and about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Bend, Oregon, within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument It is not a typical shield volcano because, in addition to erupting basaltic lavas, it also has erupted andesitic and even rhyolitic lava. The volcano is 20 miles (32 km) in diameter and has an approximate volume of 80 cubic miles (330 km3). It possesses a large oval-shaped caldera 4 × 5 miles (6.4 × 8.0 km) in diameter, called the Newberry Caldera. Within the...
My GF hasn't been before, and I've only been there in the winter to go skiing, so it'll be a fun time.
@soph-e the outdoors lifestyle is strong indeed.

I am contemplating moving out west...I like the mountains

Anywhere that has snowy mountaintops, I will fall in love with

5:35 PM
Sounds like a good plan. You all should come out here.

get me the plane ticket and I'll be there in a heartbeat!
(or in a plane ride, I guess...)

in The Velodrome, 2 mins ago, by nhinkle
Just made campground reservations at Crater Lake for late semptember! Free park admission for national public lands day, and most of the road around the rim will be closed to cars... BIKE TRIP!

@nhinkle I will be in Oregon/Washington spring/summer next year for a trip to do: Mount Baker
Glacier Peak
Mount Rainier
Mount Adams
Mt. Saint Helens
Mount Hood
Mount Jefferson
North Sister
Middle Sister
South Sister

in The Velodrome, 2 mins ago, by nhinkle
Crater Lake is a caldera lake in the western United States, located in south-central Oregon. It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park and is famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot (655 m)-deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall at a rate such that the total amount of water is replaced every 250 years. At 1,943 feet (592 m), the lake is the deepest in the United...

#Peak Bagging

5:37 PM
@AM_Hawk how many months? That's quite a list!

@nhinkle 2-3 weeks
I was recently in Colorado and did a 14'er a day for a week

Jeez. That'll be intense.

I'm still looking to see if I can do a couple of them in one day

@AM_Hawk which of them do you think you'd be able to do in one day?
All of those are pretty much all-day climbs. Although if you were backpacking you could probably do the 3 sisters in one go, but not on one day.

@nhinkle I still have to look at the map and see what access is like and drives between
I would be moving fast, running not walking...

5:40 PM
My hunch is you'll be looking at closer to 3 weeks than 2.

I know rainier will be 2-4 days

@AM_Hawk I'm guessing you've done most of the Dacks' summits, then?

Many of those are runnable but several are not... they're really mountaineering trips. You have to be roped up for portions of some of them.

Soph-e no i only recently got into Hiking/Mountaineering...I'm a Rock Climber/Ice Climber interested in getting into Alpinism

@AM_Hawk where are you coming in? Flying to PDX or SEA?

5:42 PM
so i'm training rock/ice/mountaineering and going to combine them all and go for a nice trip to the bugaboos/Rockies or a range in Alaska

wow that sounds like really cool stuff

I have a friend living in PDX that will be joining me so probs fly there and then drive north bagging the peaks
@soph-e Yup, When I climb I just feel so alive!
@Soph-e Love the Outdoors!

@AM_Hawk you gotta check this out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adirondack_Forty-Sixers

@AM_Hawk a handful of those are south of PDX too. Wondering if it makes more sense to do those first (more of the Oregon peaks are walk/runnable), then move back north.

@ Soph-e ah yes my friend who i'm going to the gunks with next weekend has done it
@nhinkle Yup, what you said, try for the PDX summits and then go north

5:46 PM
@AM_Hawk once I get a bit more climbing skills i'll have to go to the Gunks...I just bought my first pair of climbing shoes 3 weeks ago!

@soph-e Have you heard of the presidential traverse, i'd like to do that one weekend...Not too far of a drive from toronto

There's an indoor gym really close to my work place that just opened a 120ft wall, i'll be able to get some endurance with that!

@soph-e Gunks is great for beginners lots of easy climbs with good exposure, super fun palce
*place

@AM_Hawk you could probably get the sisters and jefferson and hood in about a week, although jefferson is kind of hard to access because of where the native american reservation is.

@Soph-e what is the name? I have friends in MTL and am there every now and again, they usually climb at Allez-Up
@nhinkle Thanks for the advice, i'll keep in mind when planning

5:49 PM
Allez Up gym, it's right near the Old Port
