6:00 PM
@Ampt olá

@GlenH7 we get along, but it's not quite the independent lifestyle i was hoping to live at 23...

user41796
If it's pride that's pushing you out the door and you otherwise get along great with them, I would consider it.

of course it would give me time to finish that old '53 chevy

user41796
@Ampt So slap a specific period of time on there (say 12 months) and multiply that time by the amount you save by not paying rent. Stare at those numbers for a bit and think about it.

user41796
Or put a specific deadline like "finishing the '53 Chevy (with dad)" and think that option through

6:03 PM
@GlenH7 its enough to make me consider it (definitely with dad. I'm handy but it's quite a project. It's in ~a billion pieces)

@Ampt "I'm just wondering if paying off my loans in 1 year is worth living at home as programmer" - that would make a terrific questions at Programmers wouldn't it

@gnat brb, writing it up. I'm a programmer so it must apply right?
It's got programmer in the title! Come on you power hungry mods!

user41796
@Ampt do us a favor and drop a link in here. Make it easier for me to drop the CV on it ….

Fascist!

lol

6:05 PM
then I can open up the meta.p.se question about why mine was closed
and call you all a bunch of jerks who don't care about the community

user41796
@Ampt guilty as charged. Didn't say I would down vote you though.

@Ampt absolutely!
The reason the "as a programmer" rule came about was because of this very type of question. "What's the best chair for a programmer?", "What's the best desk for a programmer?" - While they appear to be unique to programmers, it doesn't take much thought to realise that they're not. — ChrisF Feb 2 '12 at 21:47

Why don't you guys care about my problems?! I'm a Programmer after all!

user41796

user41796
The video doesn't really answer your whinging, but I thought it oddly appropriate.

6:19 PM
I prefer self-righteous indignation over whining but i guess whiners can't be choosers

Q: How do I prepare for an 'aptitude for programming' test?

Ryan MurphyI have a job interview tomorrow and it's for a junior web developer role. I am really excited about it because I really want to get my foot in the door in this industry. I have been told how the interview will pan out. It will consist of a 45 minute interview with two of their developers and an ...

can we close that? haha

user41796
@Ampt needs 1 more vote

aw shoot. I would but I just don't have the rep. Oh well!
:)

user41796
more whinging

what is whinging?

user41796
Australian / UK term for whining with some slightly different nuances

6:23 PM
Alright, theres my learning of the day out of the way. Can we go home now?

user41796
to my understanding most of what we call whining is really whinging. Whining needs that particular vocal tone to make it whining

user41796
yep, go home. Take the rest of the day off with full pay

I wish...
next year haha

so @Ampt gets paid to whinging?

6:25 PM
@André today, yes. just not to my co-workers
I also get paid to wear my ridiculously large headphones and rock out every day :D

user41796
less of a difference than I thought

anyone from NY out of curiosity?

user55340
@YannisRizos You know what we need to persuade SE to do? Make a "Yannis Hat" for the contest based on your avatar.

user41796
@André in here today? not that I know of.

user55340

@GlenH7, okay. My parents are vising NY, I was wondering if someone could tell me a shop with PS4 in stock.

@André LOL good luck!

user55340
@Ampt Two for summer, two for winter.

@Ampt I know right, probably I will end up with a Xbox One lol

Joe
6:29 PM
In the display of questions as a list, would it be possible to add a small link or piece of info that specifies how many comments have been written for that question?

@André gross. I would hold out for the PS4
@MichaelT please tell me they have fake alligator teeth in them

@Ampt, unless you ship me one as "gift". I will end up with the xbox one.

user55340
Nope... (and no, no teeth at all)

6:32 PM
@André you're on your own there. I just dislike the Xbox one immensly, despite having owned both previous generation XBoxes

Joe
@MichaelT It's probably assembled in the US

to avoid taxes would be my guess

user55340
The summer form - barmahhatsusa.com/index.php?route=product/… (notice the mesh)

probably import it as "raw materials" aka the hat and the brim and then put the two together to form the final consumer product

user41796
@Joe unlikely. comments are 2nd class citizens in the SE world. I can't see them adding anything that would increase their prominence.

user55340
6:33 PM
The "Sun Protection Liner at Front" is really nice for people with a receding hairline.

@MichaelT that experience speaking? :P

user55340
@Ampt Yes.

Joe
@GlenH7 Could they at least do it for unanswered questions so that people don't waste time clicking on unanswered questions simply because the people commenting have requested more info from the OP who hasn't responded

user55340
(My father goes bicycling... has a bike helmet, he's got less hair than I do on the top of his head... one time he went out without a bandana on his head under the helmet... got a striped sunburn on his head)

@MattFenwick: That sounds like a logical fallacy to me. Common Lisp must be numerically inefficient because it is unpopular? I don't think so. It would be more logically sound (but not much more) to say that Common Lisp is unpopular because people don't like math. — Robert Harvey 4 mins ago

user41796
6:37 PM
@Joe Again, my guess would be no. What you're suggesting would require semantic analysis of comments which is a fair amount of effort. Why bother with that for something that's a second class citizen?

Joe
@GlenH7 No no, I am not asking for analysis of the comments. Just a small piece of info written in like size 12 font (or less) that says: "5 comments"

user41796
@Joe But how would you know if those 5 comments were constructive or not? Knowing that there are 5 comments on a question really doesn't tell you anything.

They could all be "+1 great question"

user55340
@gnat Thats... disturbing to look at.

6:39 PM
Deal with it.

user41796
@gnat @MichaelT - what's Yannis' avatar going to look like when he earns the "Yannis" hat?

Joe
@GlenH7 there must be some way to identify a question that is being waited upon.

Waited upon?

waiting for clarification

user55340
What criteria would you suggest to identify 'waited on'?

Joe
6:43 PM
We could consider using a type of flagging tool that someone with a certain amount of rep can click on to say "this question needs more clarity"/"this question requires feedback from OP"

We want you, @MichaelT, to comb through all the unanswered questions and mark them as "Clear" or not.

user55340
@Ampt I do that already "vtc - unclear what you are asking"

user41796
@Ampt The roomba already does that to a degree

user55340
"down vote - this question lacks research"

@Joe I would just use time. if its > 8 hours with no answer, it's probably unclear

user41796
6:44 PM
unanswered questions with a negative score will be deleted after a period of inactivity.

Joe
@MichaelT Like Glen said, a downvote doesn't say much

Q: Why (or why not) are existential types considered bad practice in functional programming?

Petr PudlákWhat are some techniques I might use to consistently refactor code removing the reliance on existential types? Typically these are used to disqualify undesired constructions of your type as well as to allow consumption with a minimal of knowledge about the given type (or so is my understanding). ...

user41796
@Joe erm, that's not quite what I said. A down vote can actually say a lot.

user55340
@Joe I'd actually say it says quite a bit. Just people don't know which it says.

@MichaelT haskell is always unclear. Haven't you been reading the chat?

Joe
6:46 PM
@GlenH7 Yeah sorry, I am misquoting you. Glen said "amount of comments doesn't say much"

Q: Programming while walking around wearing google glass?

foreyezI've been waiting for years now for a wearable Head Mounted Display so I can program as I'm walking, or waiting in line, etc. I don't like sitting in the same place for too long when I'm programming. I think better when I walk. I just looked and Google Glass has a web browser. I guess this means...

"As a programmer"...

user41796
That helps me understand why The Register uses the term "glasshole" to refer to someone who wears google glasses.

and it's gone.

Joe
Won't it be difficult to see the code?
Or see anything with google glass?

@MichaelT he didn't give any info on input

@GlenH7 same here. And outta downvotes, too

6:53 PM
it seems they tend to run out fast

user41796
I have plenty of up/down votes left for today. regrettably, I need to watch out for the serial voting detection.

serial voting?

user55340
@André Serial voting is on one person. We tend to just go vote on everything in an area... I doubt I voted on the same person twice yesterday when looking at that tag.

@André glen usually has his breakfast while he votes

@André everyone here knows it's better not to trigger the script

A: How did this user amass more than 2k worth of reputation?

user55340
Triggering the script means it becomes more sensitive to your votes on that person in the future.

> ...not that I suggest to stop downvoting bad questions, just when you do that, better make sure that it works as you intended.

user55340
6:57 PM
@gnat his answers also tend to be on questions that are vtc deserving.

couldn't you just shadow ban him?

@MichaelT you probably looked into my Favorites :)
@Ampt that would be unfair

user55340
@gnat I was just going through his answers and noting that the titles of the questions are just... unlikely to be good.

user55340
What we're seeing here really is a person from the NPR days not completely aware of the change in the direction of the site.

@MichaelT it sometimes scares me how similar our reasoning is

user55340
6:59 PM
@gnat Our voting patterns are also rather similar.

user55340
(I'm still eagerly awaiting when we get 3x 20k voters active in the vote to deletes)

@MichaelT @gnat clearly you are both sock puppets

user41796
@Ampt but who is the puppet master?

user55340
(down to +173 rep today)

@GlenH7 you just outed yourself

user55340
7:01 PM
@GlenH7 Clearly Yannis.

@MichaelT also known as evil twins :)

user41796
perhaps it's not so clear after all

user55340
Who else but the evil mod?

just a silly question, but how much time each dedicate to SO or P.SE? each day?

user55340
7:01 PM
P.SE a fair bit. SO, just drive by answers and cliff questions.

user55340
As a note, starting off an answer with "Great question" in my mind means it isn't.

user41796
@MichaelT If you have to call out the obvious….

user41796
(then maybe it's not what you think it is.)

7:11 PM
@MichaelT I think I will be out of CVs tomorrow

I asked because having a 5 digit rep is a life goal for me :P

user55340
The way to get there on SO is different than P.SE. SO really wants people to play "Fastest Gun In The West" (FGITW) to get rep. P.SE tends to be a "really good answer a bit later to a question that gets attention"

@MichaelT here, we tend to play "Fastest Downovte In The West" over FGITW drafts

A: Multiple Interfaces in Java - Good or bad

PSRIf interface B needs more than which are available in A then it is good,

Nov 7 at 13:16, by gnat
...this comma in the end drives me nuts, what depths of knowledge (or ignorance) does it hide? These guys at SO have funny habits (as far as I can tell, this is typical draft FGITW "answer", posted two minutes after the question was asked and abandoned by the author after the question has been closed and migrated). Another thing that drives me nuts is how it managed to get an upvote?

user55340
(My favorite game - 'stealing' accepted answers)

user41796
@gnat How is that question still open?!?

7:21 PM
I noticed that on SO, if you don't answer it within 30 seconds, someone else will.

user41796
is it wrong to experiment with meh questions?

@GlenH7 easy peasy, my CV on it has expired, and I haven't yet collected enough evidence to flag it for mod-closure
2 days ago, by gnat
@MichaelT I learned not to worry about stuff like that. If question picks enough bad answers, I can always get it closed with flagging. 3-5 of my flags a week have a message starting with "please consider closing the question (flagging because my vote on it has expired)" - and the rest usually provides sufficient evidence for the moderator to agree about closure :)

user41796
I'm wondering about adding a 15th answer to push it into CW status and then deleting my answer to see if the CW status is permanent

@GlenH7 Well, clearly it's for science so it's ok

user41796
@gnat erm, the title alone begs for opinions. And the number of answers validates that.

user41796
7:24 PM
and I can't believe the top answer has 55 votes…. bleh

@GlenH7 I think 2 deleted answers will count your answer as #13 CW-wise. But don't you worry - with title like that, next two answers needed to push into CW will arrive pretty soon

user41796
@gnat that's a good observation; you're right. <sigh> So much for that experiment.

@GlenH7 what needs answering?

A: Multiple Interfaces in Java - Good or bad

@Ampt - enjoy the imaginary integers.

@GlenH7 This is perfect. I'll get all my rep from being a sarcastic ass.

user41796
only fitting for a meh question

Well, I kinda agree with you @Ampt

user41796
You should put a link back to the top answer in the first part of your answer. Put braces around everything from There's … to If you think about it. Really drive the point home.

user55340
The combining of interfaces in one interface is just... ug. No. Bad. Don't do it - it gives you nothing more and makes it harder to move it.

7:35 PM
@GlenH7 good call

user41796
oh, I'm so dumb. I can always post multiple answers on a question to test out my CW theory.

@MichaelT, that's my feeling, But I was refering to the "sarcastic ass" statement of @Ampt

user41796
doing so would kind of invalidate the flag I threw on the question though...

It's spammy but... i dont think that's the answers fault
the question is asking for recommendations about a tool, which that is
I believe the concept was that if an answer was bad, check the question. If the question was bad, downvote the question rather than the answer
I don't think that answer deserves the DV

No, just a close vote.

Hey guys. Wanted to inform you up front: Just asked a question on the main site. Hope no one smacks it down for the lack of research. Point is that it's that tough to ask that question (what should I ask, where should I ask) that I struggle with finding the right words. I'll narrow it down as comments come in.

@kaiser use the wiki image for the page if it exists
you aren't the first to come across this problem
see: facebook

@Ampt sorry. Wiki Image?

search for something not on facebook officially, like your city
itll look for a wiki page for your city, grab the data + any image that exists
and use that

9:28 PM
@Ampt Are you referring to Wikipedia?

@Ampt Thanks for the hint. That's the lazy approach I've already thought about. I was just picking locations as an example.

@kaiser My trouble with your question is I'm not sure if you're looking for a way to quantify how "pretty" an image is or if you are looking for a way to provide images relative to a keyword and you would like to make sure the images are good quality?

It's about the "quantification" (right word?) of "beauty" and the image analyzes.

I see my stalker is applying his single downvote to all of my answers, as usual.

@RobertHarvey IIRC it's 5 downvotes and the community bot will trigger, revert and punish

SE system is built to account that. Don't think about it.

I don't always like your answers, I rarely find anything wrong with them
in fact, have I ever downvoted you? hmmmm

@Mike It's probably some pedant that requires absolute precision in answers (or his definition of answers). Either that, or someone bent out of shape because I voted to close one of his questions (something I do a lot on P.SE).

9:38 PM
@RobertHarvey you get used to that fact that people get angry. that's sadly part of the system.

@Mike instead, you'd better restore the "voting balance" in the posts that were unjustly voted down (I'd do that myself but am out of votes for, like last few hours)
