yeah. identifying BSO's isn't hard. generally, they come from big box stores like walmart or similar.
as for upgrading a bso, generally the best thing to do is just get a new bike. for the amount of money you spend putting in parts that last, you can usually get some decent used older bike that will perform better.
even something like an 80s specialized rockhopper which you can find for well under 100 dollars is generally going to be lighter than most bso's and quicker and more comfortable on or off road than most bso's as well.
