@Michael unfortunately, downtubes are loaded in torsion in addition to just tension :(

@MaplePanda wasn’t there a 90ies MTB which used a steel cable instead of a downtube?

Probably had an extra thick top tube to compensate, or just suffered from a severe lack of torsion stiffness overall
