You can't really chase the threads. If they're crossthreaded then they're toast. Best to bore it out, tap a larger thread, and put in a helicoil. A $20-30 job at the lbs.

Not here- it'd be a couple hundred bucks
and oyu need a larger crank extractor too

Wha...? Putting in a helicoil is just a 30 minute job if they know what they're doing. You don't have to take off the cranks either. The alu of the cranks is so soft which makes it easy -- but is also why a helicoil is the only way to go. But you do need the taps -- which makes it worthwhile for the shop to have, but not for consumers.
 
@RoboKaren yeah - I think you're assuming the pedal end of the crank. I'm talking about the BB end, where the crank extractor goes.

new cranks is the way to go.
 
mmmm this is a quad chainring... never seen one before. I'll use it as-is and if it breaks.... dunno.
