@gschenk swallow still on pill version, but IV version stopped yesterday.
There are no downvotes on that question
I have enough rep to see its +3 and -0

@gschenk I detest detailers, and I get the impression the only really good quality internal geared hub is the Rohloff. I've got the Nuvinci on my cargo bike and love it—the fact you can change gears freewheeling, stopped, under load is great. And it's half the price of the Rohloff, and maintenance-free.

@RobertAtkins I thought they need an oil change every year?

7:40 PM
"The NuVinci Optimized CVP is provided with permanent lubrication and the CVP internals are maintenance-free for the life of the product." (fallbrooktech.com/sites/default/files/videos/MANU-NFIN-00.pdf)

@RobertAtkins interesting. Your mention of nuvinci was the first time I heard of it.

And of course, its from Holland! Very new indeed, 2006. 2.5 kg is quite a lot (if one often has to shoulder a bike). Low maintenance is nice, step-less automatic shifting sounds fantastic.
Are Sachs 7 speed hubs also low quality? How does it show, reliabilty, maintenance?

@Criggie there's so much mention of Schrader valves. Is that only for some nostalgia or are those in use anywhere?
I've had some on a pram in Canada. A friend of mine had a MTB in the early 90s with Schraders. Were a total pain to inflate, he always had to come to our house since whe had a foot pump for a caravan.
We found out by accident that Dunlop valves fit the rim-hole, and could replace his innertubes with cheap ones from the petrol station, rather than expensive ones from a bike shop.

@gschenk Every bike tyre here is a schrader / car / american / auto valve UNLESS its a road bike.
All the MTBs use schrader.
Dunlop and woods valves are super rare

NZ?

Yep
Presta is the standard valve on road bikes.

shopping bikes and old bikes use Dunlop, Road and MTB presta.
They're typically called English and French valves, respectively.

Servos here all have air pumps for car valves but that's it.
noone uses country names here - its schrader or "car" , or presta, or "wtf is that ?"

10:29 PM
Well, its because bikes from England used to come with Dunlop valves, and those from France and Italy with presta.
It was all dunlop except for fancy bikes here until recently, changed maybe in the 80s or 90s.
Isn't it rather difficult to pump up Schraders? If the pump head isn't seated perfectly, it will just deflate the tire as soon as the valve is pushed in?

No not at all. You simply thread on the hose or clamp on the top, and pump.

From my experience with small pumps, it happens every couple of pump strokes that I change the angle and lose seal.
Oh, haven't seen a tread on. Only those that are pushed on and then a lever is flipped to depress the valve inner.
I've pumped up the pram a couple of times, but that was with a floor pump.

then you're not on far enough.

10:44 PM
interesting, cheers.
Oh, do you know if this is a fairly recent development? I suppose in the past most bikes in NZ would have been from England? (thinking of Raleighs dominance)

11:43 PM
maybe in the 60s
but asia is a lot closer
