@KitZ.Fox linen! I'm an idiot, it's called linen.

Huh. You have some fancy shirts then.

I don't know what poplin is, I'm going with it's a pre-zygotic popple

That wrinkle when you look at them.

@JimmyHoffa s\linen!\\g
s\, it's called linen.\\g

huh I guess it's called poplin

4:03 PM
@JimmyHoffa being at home I'm less concerned. However... that same bookmarklet worked on my work computer too :o

I have never heard that in my life, you'd think people would have acquaintance with the name of a fabric so common.

@JimmyHoffa so it's a textile weave and not a fabric?

@enderland you smell like ketchup
@MetaFight guess so

user55340
@ThomasOwens or @GlenH7 - one shot of look at writing the tag wiki for

@JimmyHoffa actually pretty damn interesting

4:05 PM
yessss... slipped under the radar for rewriting :D

I used to be in the fashion industry. You can trust me.
Stupid script. Damn it.

either way, I can't stand boxers made out of anything thick or stretchy as they invariably bunch from moving around. I wouldn't bother with wool.

It's amazing to me how many different personal preferences there are for things like that

Though I've been meaning to try grabbing pants from amazon because I never go clothes shopping in basically forever

@JimmyHoffa I agree with the bunching argument, however, merino wool can be used in making poplin.

4:08 PM
@JimmyHoffa if you can find a pair/brand/sizing you like first that's a better idea than blindly doing that

@enderland yeah which has been my goal for a good while but that requires clothes shopping to begin with, which happens to never occur

@KitZ.Fox Is there an industry that you haven't been a part of?

@MetaFight $150? aint no one got money for dat
enderland bought the last dress shirts he bought at Good Will

@Ampt Porn. Fishing. Steel. Industrial petro--no, I have been part of that.
I like to keep it interesting.

4:10 PM
@KitZ.Fox your first two read much more interesting if you take out the "."

Also, I'm old.
@enderland And swap the phrases.

@KitZ.Fox pffff you've got nothing on some others here

@enderland I don't recall the last time I bought a dress item from anywhere other than a thrift store... so damned expensive new, and who can tell the difference? I don't like wearing the stuff, why should I pay a bunch of money for it..

@enderland yeah, mega expensive, but I recently realised that I've been wearing the same shirts for over 10 years. I think it's ok to invest in quality clothes now.

<-- currently wearing $2 thrift store leather dress shoes

4:11 PM
@JimmyHoffa yeah. plus I probably have accidentally bought nice shirts without even realizing!
Though employer++ has a pretty relaxed dress code so I'll save some money on clothes, I guess

There is a noticeable difference in quality for a good dress shirt.
Most people can sense it, even if they don't know what to look for.

The fit is better, the drape is better, the seams are smoother and tighter. They last longer and hold a press better.

> I read your last note... Too bad... [company] looses a very talented young engineer....
AHHHHH WHY YOU USE LOOSE INSTEAD OF LOSE /rant

@KitZ.Fox If I'm going to wear a shirt for 10 years I want it to breathe. That's why I'm considering a new merino wool shirt arsenal.

4:13 PM
at least he's a non-native english speaker

ugh, amazon wants to charge $50 a pop for the jeans I'm wearing? I know they're cheaper at the mall because they're always on sale... arrrrr

@MetaFight You should consider linen and cotton if you're looking for lightweight breathability.
@JimmyHoffa You should get union made jeans.

@JimmyHoffa camelcamelcamel and put an alert on it

I just want to make all those poor kids who are toiling for pennies a day in indonesia making the shit we all wear etsy accounts so they can make $10 a pair of pants rather than quarter pence and we can all get the shit we wear at reasonable prices

Wait, that's not the right link. Let me see.

4:16 PM
@enderland huh?

@JimmyHoffa you don't know about camel^3? camelcamelcamel.com
you can install an addin which gives you historical pricing on whatever Amazon thing you are viewing
amazon screws with their prices all the time

Oh. Right. It's Union Line: unionmadeclothing.com

You can also setup an alert to let you know when the price drops

Maybe I just can't make this script work. Maybe it's not possible. sighs
Off to a security briefing. Later!

Q: How should I use Predicates for direct SQL access through System.Data.SqlClient?

user2313300I have an application that uses Code First Entity Framework. There is a repository layer on top of Entity Framework which defines a function that takes a Predicate argument and returns matching results. e.g. interface IMyRepository { IEnumerable<MyClass> Get(Predicate<MyClass> predicate); ...

Step one: Design a well architected solution.
Step two: take out all the smart bits citing "budget concerns"
It's the business way!

@Ampt Yeah, that gets to be a complicated story to explain

@Ampt but the chick is suuuch a baaaad actress

Spader was the only good actor in the show such that I recall

@JimmyHoffa the story lines gets pretty unbelievable at points too

What show is this?

But there's also Alan Alda, so it's got that going for it

5:32 PM
@Ampt yeah, I didn't finish the first season even I don't think (don't remember). I found daredevil and promptly forgot all about that show regardless of the strong concept they had plus spader filling the role was perfect but... too many holes in the show when spader wasn't on the screen or when the script writers got to try writing script which they clearly were terrible at

Q: Should I point out spelling/grammar related mistakes in someone's code?

RahulWhile reviewing a co-worker's code,I came across some spelling mistakes in function names and also grammatical errors like 'doesUserHasPermission()' instead of 'doesUserHavePermission()' in function and variable names. Should I point these out to him or am I being too pedantic by noticing these?

I saw that show. Didn't the FBI agent defect and run away and marry the guy she was chasing?

@ThomasOwens Mmmmm no.

@ThomasOwens did you just spoil the ending?

nah, they're lawyers, they squander other people's money

user114359
@enderland The more I make, the more I spend on little stuff, which is easier to control. I'm not spending tons of money on big houses or luxury cars with long-term commitments. I mean like "this month I'll make fewer impulse purchases from Amazon so I can do something else with my money."

@enderland if you think at any point between now and then that shit ain't going to be halted, you are sorely mistaken.

@JimmyHoffa heh. I know... they wouldn't let me roll the vested balance into an IRA :(

"Vested balance" Lol ok
if you didn't put anything in, there's no vested balance at all
I hope you didn't take that over 401k contributions...

6:19 PM
I wish I could just put it into an IRA. alas...

And they legally owe that to you?

I think so

cuz yeah, that's definitely IRA money. Granted, you can't put that much into an IRA at once.

I'm not sure
It's vested though
@Ampt if it had been a balance of less than $5k you can roll it to an IRA when you leave

user41796
@Ampt Sure you can if you're rolling over an account

6:20 PM
is it backed by anyone?

@Ampt a very stable company and a nearly full funded pension

like if the company goes under?

user41796
Then it's backed by the federal pension guarantee fund

Sweet deal.

(rounding)

user41796
6:21 PM
But companies are also allowed to convert traditional pension plans into cash balance plans

how damn... that's a decent chunk of money by the time you hit 65

@GlenH7 my company changed so that new hires have cash balance plans instead of defined benefits plans

user41796
The rate as specified by law tends to favor the corporation's interest. I'll let y'all be shocked by that.

@Ampt I think it was like $5k/year but that doesn't include inflation, so it's not that much

Oh, it doesnt grow at all?

user41796
6:22 PM
@enderland It tends to degree morale for a while when they convert everyone...

@GlenH7 the return on the investment is like 3% over 40 years... it's why I wish I could convert it to an IRA instead :(

user41796
@Ampt traditional pension plans are S sum of money based upon salary multiplied by Y years of service.

user41796
@enderland Just hope they don't convert you then. As the numbers will be less favorable than that.

@enderland ah. so you're just going to spread that dollar amount into those payments.

meh it's 100% free money anyways

6:23 PM
yeah that's not bad all in all

@Ampt I don't get a choice. When I'm 65 I'll get like $400/month from my vested pension balance (assuming nothing changes)
but that's not going to be worth much that far in the future

@GlenH7 Company pensions are federally backed? Sense when? How does this play into the countless company pensions and even government pensions that have folded and said "Look, we just can't pay you because... we don't have anything."

employer^ had a stock option program - where the company bought out your stocks when you retired. around when I left anyone who was there for 20+ years had million dollar stock values.

user41796
That's the problem with pensions - they tend not to fare well once inflation is considered

user41796
@JimmyHoffa Since always. Go look at: pbgc.gov

6:24 PM
but if I could drop the full $25k into an IRA, I'm sure I'd have a better amount of money when I'm 65

what a crock. Company's bitch out of paying pensions all the time, I never knew the gov had to come in and make good on the company's commitments

:26952553 and I trust myself to not lose the money in the pension and/or convert it to something else much more than my previous employee

humbug

user41796
When a company dumps their pension, the PBGC is supposed to see enough money to cover things. That doesn't always happen, and the PBGC is allowed to pay out less than what the original company promised to the employees.

user41796
So don't worry, the employee can still get screwed in this case too

6:26 PM
I'm sure they don't let people roll it to an IRA when it's very high because most people would probably just cash it out right away and take a huge tax hit, screw their retirement, and they don't want that :P
But... I'm more financially literate than most people in the country anyways. oh well

user41796
@JimmyHoffa It's one of the reasons why the favorable terms were put into law about converting a traditional pension into a cash balance program. Took pressure off of the PBGC

@GlenH7 the thing that pisses me off about this is that company's get to lay false promises, bilk the pension for their execs, and then the tax payers are on the hook for it

user41796
That came about when IBM, AT&T, and maybe GE were being sued over their conversions

howabout no frickin pensions and everyone has to plan for their own retirement like they god damn ought to
grumble grumble

user41796
@Ampt You mean you don't believe in the social security fairy either?

6:28 PM
@Ampt it's been done. Have a look back in history to see how that worked out.

user114359
@Ampt I agree. Which is why I have my own IRAs and 401(k)s

user114359
and when I leave an employer, I roll the 401(k) into an IRA and manage it myself

user114359
I can have five investment options.... or 500. At my age, I choose to invest my IRAs more aggressively (but still diversified)

@GlenH7 oh how I wish I could just have the 15% for social security as additional income for my 401k! ugh!!!

no retirement benefits for anyone is a simple policy of: Them that didn't save in the good times (or never had good times) deserve to rot away on a diet of cat food and cold for their elder years when they can no longer work.

6:29 PM
@GlenH7 I believe in the common good and social equality and that there is enough wealth in the world that we shouldn't have to exploit people. I also believe that people should plan their life in accordance for what they want. If you want to buy a new frickin ferrari every year in your golden years, then you should have to plan for that during your working years.

user114359
@enderland sorry, that Ponzi scheme is mandated by Congress.

user41796
@enderland I actually disagree with that approach as the vast majority of US citizens aren't qualified to handle those funds

@GlenH7 I know, for most people it'd be a disaster, which is why I'd only allow that if you showed significant competence/planning for your retirement

user114359
@GlenH7 part of the problem is we, as a society, do not teach our youth how to manage money. I took an elective in high school on finance, but nothing was required. As far as I know, that is still the case.

I suspect I'm more aligned with socialism than capitalism in that regard- I support a basic income in place of welfare/social security
no one starves, but if you want a better life, you work for it.

6:31 PM
and I'd want a yearly renewal of that (perhaps even means/asset tested somehow?)

@Snowman that was the case for me as well.

@Snowman I got ridiculously lucky in that regard

user41796
@Snowman Still the case. I know quite a few high school aged kids

user41796
@Ampt that's what social security was originally meant for

I never really was a spender, then when I went from grad school to FT I realized... "I have no idea what I'm doing and am about to get like $40k in disposable income a year" and so I took Financial Peace University, which made me interested in the whole subject and it snowballed

user41796
6:32 PM
And then congresses raided that nice little pot o' cash. And also failed to update the rules based upon changes in lifespans and health.

@GlenH7 I don't like the whole "based upon your 5 highest payed years" or whatever. Everyone gets the same. period.
just keep it simple

@GlenH7 precisely.. the thing is with all the tools in the world, a large portion of people just aren't able to make great decisions. It's not their fault, and no matter how smart or stupid you think your fellow man, even if it's 1 in 10 people who are literally incapable, should we just say "10% of people are going to live utter destitute misery cuz I got mine" ?

@Snowman I learned how to manage my money by playing RPGs.

@Ampt it's not based on that, it's heavily progressive already
@MetaFight lol! I had a game that I think contributed to my saving mentality, because if a war happened and you didn't have significant savings (a 'warchest') you got obliterated. Since it was a 1 turn/day thing you had to do this over time, too

user41796
@JimmyHoffa tbh, I always believed the push to privatize social security was simply a thinly veiled attempt at putting more money in the hands of the brokerages.

user114359
6:34 PM
@MetaFight StarCraft helped too

@GlenH7 had to double check your username for a second...
@Snowman you want to keep as low a balance in starcraft as possible though - at the highest level anyway

@enderland exactly. Games aren't perfect teachers, but they help you learn to plan for the unexpected.

user41796
@Ampt I think that runs into most people's sense of fair play. With the counter argument of "I earned more so therefore I should have a bigger safety net." But there's something to be said for the simple version.

mainly because time is more valuable than the resources in that game

user114359
@Ampt yeah but it is still all about resource management. No credit. Want to build a Battlecruiser? You damn well better have the cash on hand. Save for it.

6:35 PM
@GlenH7 you don't have to "believe" that - it's well documented. 401k is the same, go read from some people who worked at the SEC during the 70s/80s when 401ks became a thing what they saw plain as day: Company's found them cheaper and brokerages gave them kickbacks for converting away from pensions or other benefits

user41796
@Ampt I'm old. And I've been connected to the political machinery before. And the underbelly is just .... frightening.

@Snowman Actually the recommended strategy for that is to expand more and have a higher income, so that you get a BC's worth of minerals/gas in the same amount of time.... haha

@JimmyHoffa I'm still surprised companies like Vanguard haven't just destroyed that industry, since they basically operate a business model that is completely unlike the big investment banks

user41796
@JimmyHoffa And the fact that it was pushed heavily by "Mr. All-my-buddies-are-bankers President" didn't help either

privatize social security is same thing: Bunch of banking lobbyists push for it so they have more money to fiddle with, corporations who want to pay less overhead on their workforce lobby for it, and their lobbying attempt is all this "Hey common citizen, we want to make it so you don't have to pay for Tom down the road just because he's lazy!"

6:36 PM
yeah StarCraft didn't teach long term saving :P

@enderland If the map wasn't completely stripped of resources by the 20 minute mark, you were doing it wrong lol
@GlenH7 If you want a bigger safety net, invest for one. You don't get to take a bigger spoonful out of the pot

user41796
There's arguments to both sides is all I'm saying

Oh for sure
I'm not saying my way is the best way.. but I think that within my lifetime, there will come a point where more people are out of jobs than in them due to automation and artificial intelligence

@GlenH7 the fact that many people will not save and will spend everything is one reason I think it's a good idea (in spite of being heavily libertarian in many viewpoints) - those people are going to require something eventually anyways

and when that happens, how does the system work then?

6:38 PM
we're basically there @Ampt
there are a lot of people who are "useless" other than basic manual labor, or surplus, or however you want to phrase it to be less offensive

@enderland nah, we still have unions and all that. I'm talking full on automation for everything.
we're close, yeah, but not quite

user41796
@enderland This is quite true. I know too many people who should know better but aren't really saving for their retirements

when AI can automatically program itself to do manual labor jobs like sweeping floors or stocking fridge shelves.... that's when shit hits the fan.

@GlenH7 I read articles about "average assets for retirement" and cry when I look at age breakdowns

And we can either go Star Trek, or Elysium when that happens.

6:40 PM
@Ampt till that soil or the local lord will kick your ass off it. Also it'll be illegal to own robots or automation products yourself (Who knows what damage people would do to the good of others if they had such power without the proper knowledge and experience of one of the corps, we might as well just let people lay broadband on their own!)

user114359
@enderland I just assume I will be working well into the age where I should be retired.

right now it's looking like elysium...

hello
I am writing in JS
var loop=0;
while(true){
loop++;
}

@GlenH7 yeah. that's.. the problem. I read an interesting article comparing incomes/lifestyles to the 50s or something, talking about how much worse off we are now in spite of making enough to cover the lifestyle of the 50s in a much smaller percentage of the working week - it's the extra "needs" and "luxuries" that cause the problems...

when I type console.log(loop) nothing happens?

user41796
6:42 PM
@enderland Agreed

user41796
There's a lot more "gotta haves" that have recurring payments tied to them

?

@Ivan what are you trying to log

the times while loop is executed

you're just logging the function pointer

user41796
6:43 PM
@Ivan Or what did you expect to happen

you need to look up a good JS tutorial

user41796
^^^ That

@Ivan the loop will execute forever
well eventually you'll crash something, I guess

I expect loop to be equal to 7, if while loop is executed 7 times

user41796

6:44 PM
if I enter the console.log in the loop it prints 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

user41796
Go complete all the units there

I know JS at basic level, and idk why it doesn't work as it have to
has to*

@Ivan explain in words, what each line of your code does

function countDivs(html){

var loop;
var div;

while (true){

loop++;
div = html.indexOf('<div', div+1);

if (div<0){return false;}

console.log(div);
console.log(loop);

}

console.log(loop);

}
*html is a string with html code

In other news, my first world problem is that amazon was out of stock on a replacement valve that I need. Other vendors had it, but wouldn't let me upgrade the shipping time. So I have to wait until the following weekend to fix the humidifier in my house.

6:46 PM
@Ivan no, you really don't :/

user41796
And I'm too lazy to call and chase down a replacement through the various hardware stores in town

@GlenH7 if you want I can give you some spare humidity from my apartment.

I want to print the number of div elements in the string

and they are equal to loop executionb btw

kind of similair

@Ivan You're overestimating your ability. Go visit that tutorial and work your way through it.

2 mins ago, by enderland
@Ivan explain in words, what each line of your code does

user41796
@Ampt I was wondering what RMA you were referring to earlier

user41796
There's an interesting question - what type of water would be least corrosive in that case

6:47 PM
@GlenH7 sorry, must have left that part out. Yeah, contacting the european vendor to get my replacement... it's been fun so far
@GlenH7 Their proprietary brand of water, of course.

user41796
I was skimming the transcript anyway

I just used distilled

user41796
@Ampt Oh blech

but apparently nickel loses to distilled water.

@GlenH7 It's a mystery to me how, in the soggy hole of a country, none of the houses have proper insulation or ventilation. Every house in this city that's more than 10 years old is freezing cold in the winter and filled with mould year-round.

distilled will strip things faster

and it voids your warranty if you say you use it
so... yeah.

oh bummer

user41796
@MetaFight Definitely need better ventilation and dehumidification then

so I used their super awesome proprietary stuff for sure.

what is an RMA?

6:49 PM
warranty claim
no clue what the actual letters stand for

Return Merchandise Authorization

user41796
Their proprietary stuff may have had a better balance of the minerals in the water to prevent said stripping

that's what google suggested but I couldn't figure from context what you meant

@GlenH7 likely it does.
I'll use it this time for sure

user41796
I wonder how mineral spirits would have done

6:49 PM
Also @GlenH7 not sure if you like reading, but this book is a good book on the subject we were talking about before

@Ampt Return Maybe AlrightNo?

but nothing in their instructions says you have to use it

@GlenH7 what you mean overestimating? where is the error?

its just on some forum posts

user114359
Return My Alcohol, please!

6:50 PM
@Ivan You are overestimating your skill level

user41796
@enderland Cool, I'll check it out

word-ku?

@JimmyHoffa not enough semi-colons

;;;;;;;;;;;
there, use those

user41796
6:51 PM
Along with cowbell, gotta have more semi-colons

well, I did it this way
var divNumber = (html.match(new RegExp("<div", "g")) || []).length;
console.log(divNumber);
is it correct?

does it work?

yes

then yes!

:D it is strange
the previous way worked too but only inside the while loop?!?!

6:52 PM
when in doubt: regex; doubt++;

@MetaFight You have a problem. You solve it with regex. Now you have 2 problems. The end.

@Ivan you don't understand loops then.

@Ivan You're overestimating your ability. Go visit that tutorial and work your way through it.

@GlenH7 Tutorials are for noobs and losers, why would he use those.

ok, I will, but I have to do it soon, so no time to watch tutorials atm

user41796
6:55 PM
@Ivan Then feel free to keep banging your head against the wall and not getting anywhere

@GlenH7 Keep head banging?
Metal.

you don't understand JS, right?

@Ivan nope. We don't use JS here

user114359
@GlenH7 also, more coffee

only Haskell

6:56 PM
okay

user41796
@Ivan Go ahead and believe that, yes

@GlenH7 Shhhh I'm going to tell him about the truth and light that is Haskell.

user41796
Haskell is better than jQuery, no doubt

@Ivan many of us do, it's just we've all done this stuff for many years, coming down to the level of absolute beginner is both unclear to us as well as confusing to you which is why it's suggested you use materials intended to help absolute beginners

Glen citing government conspiracies, Jimmy being helpful? Did you guys go all freaky friday on a tuesday?

6:58 PM
@Ivan besides that, it's rather clear you're trying to skip over a lot of steps in the learning process which you think will help but with our experience, we have learned very well that it won't. You need to go read, practice, and learn before tackling anything of any complexity. What you're trying to do is like trying to read without first learning the alphabet.

in other words, getting the answer without understanding how to get there is not going to help you at all long term

user41796
@Ampt Shhhhh... don't tell. But we swapped user accounts for the day.

user41796
@enderland or short term
