Ok, I know this question has been done to death, but might there be some value in getting an MCSD certification? Say, from a "Yes, my previous work has been in Winforms, but Microsoft says I know WPF" perspective?

not in my experience. certifications that are not CCIE are indicators that you are not only lacking practical experience, but also make poor financial decisions.

but I also hate everything, so there's that.

Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert? Why would I need that?

shrug it's the only cert that I know of that provides suitable testing so it cannot be crammed for.

What matters is the employers' perception, not the quality of the tests. The two aren't necessarily in alignment.

@RobertHarvey Thus my graphic

quite true.

How accurate is that graphic? Can I use it as a priority list?
Oh, and my college recruiter already mentioned keywords. The more the merrier.

the only cert worth a damn is a college degree, IMO

@RobertHarvey Writing a compiler or OS is not a bad thing to do in your spare time anyway
@whatsisname Personally I would hire someone without a college degree if they rocked a technical interview and seemed like they could walk and talk and dress themselves

They are worth something, though. Many jobs list Bachelor's or Masters in a related field as an essential requirement. Without it, they won't even look at you.

@durron597: regarding that graph, "looks kind of drunk in facebook photo" would be a +10 for me

/me goes back to checking in compiler code without a degree.

> [So What's the Value of Microsoft Certifications?](http://www.geekswithblogs.net/dlussier/archive/2013/09/01/153907.aspx)
After years in the Microsoft Certification program I’ve concluded that holding a Microsoft Certification has value only if you're looking to be hired by an organization that needs it to fulfill their Microsoft Partner Competency requirements. I cringe when I see forum posts from people who talk about all the time and effort they spent getting certified in hopes it would result in higher pay or better jobs. Microsoft Certification doesn't do that. Real world experience
