@YannisRizos given the circumstances, wouldn't it make better sense to simply remove this outright off-topic, totally ignoring what Programmers is about question, so that it won't pollute site front page — gnat 51 mins ago
@gnat I usually like to wait a while, for the OP to take notice of the closure and comments.

At -5, it's off the front page already.
That said, I just noticed that this isn't the first time he posted an SO question here, and we already had the same q-ban discussion with the OP. So, there's absolutely no reason for me to wait. Gone.

Question for the mods:
how does [this answer] not net this guy over 10,000 rep? He's currently only at 7000, so unless he bountied a ton of questions, or went on a downvoting rampage, how is he not easily over 10k?
ah... rep capping
nevermind

user55340

@Ampt May 29 '12. 212 events... thats mega rep capped there... that would have been 2120 rep... but 2.1k of it was rep capped away.

@Oded at least? I thought at this point that it was at most

I'd expect bobince to have taken that crown though.

2:29 PM
he rep caps daily

you can only catch up at a certain point with accepted answer or bounty rep

he really has no further use for rep, since nothing he does can increase the rate at which it flows in

Yeah, and his answers get accepted. Even days, weeks and months later.

user55340
I find myself very divided on this. You do have 10 moderator flags for when close votes run out, if you find something really ought to be closed. And the close votes do stick around, in the case that for example a question gets undeleted. But on the reverse side, users under 10k find it really difficult to undelete questions. In the end, I don't think this "loss" is really problematic or abuseable (as among other things it's not as if you can see who voted on your question prior to closing). But I don't see this feature being harmful to implement, either, since the wrongs are just as rare. — Grace Note ♦ Nov 4 '10 at 15:56

user55340
@GraceNote is this still suggested that the 10 moderator flags be used for pushing things to a quick close when you run out of votes? On SO, the custom flags can be even slower than close votes at times... and if you're a responsible flagger you are more likely to have 100 flags available than 10 flags (and I'm sure that the mods would give me very dirty looks if I was to go on a flagging spree of "this needs to be closed quickly - blame Gracenote") — MichaelT 12 hours ago

@JimmyHoffa - it's a legal question. Please enjoy burning it to ashes.

@GlenH7 I'm tired of re-logging into SE

user41796
Then don't log out? :-)

At some point in the last year they've jacked the login system up, probably for "added security" but the result is everytime I go to any SE site it asks me to login, and if I login then go to another SE site that other one doesn't have me logged in.
Pain in the arse.

user41796
@JimmyHoffa What browser are you using? I don't have that issue.

5:00 PM
@GlenH7 chrome, I suspect my security extensions don't like whatever changes they made because a year or so ago it wasn't a problem

user41796
DESE never remembers my login automatically, but I normally get a "Welcome back!" message whenever I visit an SE site

user41796
I think they set a cookie of some sort, so if you've locked that down then that would be the issue.

user41796
Would it persuade you if I told you it was a really crappy legal question that needed to be nuked? :-)

@GlenH7 That did persuade me to click the link, but I wasn't logged in...

@GlenH7 I don't believe you.

5:05 PM
Now, I'm not going to hang the guilt of Syria or Somalia over your head. But making the world a better place starts with one little step at a time.

user41796
With Syria I can categorically deny any involvement. But let's not play 20 questions, please.

user41796
Oh, and Greece. I had nothing to do with Greece. That was all Yannis.

@GlenH7 I'll just assume 'categorically deny' is some political double speak that means 'I might have, but maybe not, but let's not get into details, because I don't like thinking about all the blood'
here you're just trying to garner delete votes, but instead you get blamed for Syria. What is this world coming to...

user41796
@JimmyHoffa Seriously. See, and that's proof of what I was trying to explain. Because you couldn't be bothered to type in a few characters (despite having typed way more in this chat), I'm now being unjustly maligned.

Guybrush ThreepwoodI'm going to rule out incest here, I don't suppose that's what Lewis had in mind. do you guys think a description of something can be both abstract an unambiguous
*and

user41796
6:11 PM
@whatsisname YES! or maybe NO! or maybe "more context please?"

sure
so, this company I am contracting for had some pretty lousy software and some pretty lousy requirements/specification documents
so the new project manager guy, who is a hardware guy and not a software guy, is very focused on writing requirements documents
which is reasonable, however in my opinion his expectations are a bit off
what he is essentially asking for is a given software to be implemented entirely in an MS word document
but at the same time says the requirements should be abstract and not specific to implementation

user41796
@whatsisname Let 'em try...

well I don't want to try because that is a waste of my time and boring

user41796
Requirements can be precise and not tied to the implementation

so, he's said that requirements should be abstract, but at the same time should be unambiguous in intent

user41796
6:14 PM
"Guest users shall have an address associated with them."

and then constantly says that requirements for hardware are "it will be blue, and be wireless"
"Is it blue, yes or no"
and expects stuff like that in descriptions of the software

user41796
"All addresses shall have entries for two street values, one city, one state or province, and one zip code."

but I can't seem to convince him that what he's asking for, what he thinks he's asking for, and what he's expecting, in my opinion, are all different
yeah, but those aren't very abstract, either
basically, what happens
is we have a very abstract requirements document
I implement it
but, because I am the software developer, at requirements-time I can see all the way down to every line of code instantly in my head, he can't

user41796
abstraction is a function of how far away from the system you want to look at it

I can see you guys are already having a conversation, but I figure I'll try asking the question here to see if I can get a quick answer rather than posting a question proper on SO or Programmers.SE: Can anyone tell me if there is a tool, addon, or setting for VS 2010 that will make Javascript display members of a class or var like a period will for classes in C#? My company has a pretty sizable library of javascript utilities and I want an easier way to see what they've implemented for it.

user41796
@Dispensador check out: vswebessentials.com/download

so, any time I implement something slightly differently that what he expected, despite meeting the "abstract" requirements, he then says "well uh that should be in the requirements document"
and before long the path towards everything in the MSword doc is underway

user55340
(or from Safari books: my.safaribooksonline.com/book/… )

New boss's new way has a bunch of flaws in it? Okay, roll with it. Eventually he'll see the issues.

user41796
What I'm hearing is you really have a "pick your battles" issue not a requirements issue

while rolling over is a tempting solution
in the long run it will cause me trouble

user55340
First off, unless you are a seasoned veteran with double digits in the experience with the company... you've got less than your boss does.

whats really frustrating, is that I understand his position, and I actually agree with him.....when it's hardware

user55340
Get two copies of that book, give one to him... and you read one. At the end of a week or two, have a meeting about what you've both learned from the book.

6:24 PM
it also doesn't help that there are only 3 of us, and he is used to working in a company with several thousand engineers

Sounds like something you would do for a multi-million dollar contract
I'm guessing that's probably not the case here

10 mins ago, by GlenH7
@whatsisname Lots of folk think they understand what requirements should be listed to start. And then just punt when the inevitable misses are pointed out.
What you need to do, is realize what I just quoted, and also that your boss is 100% wrong when he "knows what you want" - so ask more often

he's gonna have a hard time justifying all that overhead for a fancy looking word doc when you're halfway through the project and all you've got are a couple hundred lines of code and a 3000 page word doc haha

@MichaelT This also depends on how much of a PiTA his boss is for others to work with, some longer tenured folks have close to 0 capital too because they can't be worked with

user55340
> Cooler heads have realized that any development technique has a need to discover the requirements as a prerequisite to serious development. In turn, the cooler heads have absorbed requirements processes into their development life cycles. Instead of attempting to do away with requirements, intelligent methods simply approach the requirements need from a different direction.
The real concern—and this applies to any kind of development technique—is to discover what is needed without producing unnecessary, premature, and wasteful reams of documentation.

ampt: right
if I did nothing for an entire year but write requirements documents, he'd be A-OK with that

well... it's up to you to figure out how much trouble that would cause for you and your career

except, then we would have gone a year without any new software or updates or anything, etc, which is a problem of its own
yeah

6:37 PM
you don't want the sinking ship to take you down too
then again, he's your manager and its up to you to follow him

user55340
Employer^^.. the senior developers were basically relegated to that ('they know what needs to be done - their time is too valuable to be spent coding... have them write waterfall tech docs and give that to the jr devs...')

yeah I think I'll chat with the "other" boss and I'll either roll with it and not care, or they'll move me to other stuff
likely the moving to other stuff

yeah its really up to how the higher ups see failure
it may come back to bite you

yeah, it could

@whatsisname did you know coffeescript will automatically bundle your iteration results as a returned array if the last line in a function is inside a loop, it's implicit return assumes you want to return the result of that line from each iteration so it creates and array and bundles the results into it and returns it from the function
I just did it on accident, it's awesome

6:48 PM
I did not know that

I just noticed one of my recursive calls is automatically returning an array with basically the flattened graph I'm recursing

I've never used coffeescript though, so you could claim just about anything and I wouldn't argue ;)

And yep... he did click the big red button (I had the profile open in another window... other accounts are 404'ed)

Terms of use are very clear and need to be followed.

@MichaelT got it

shit, it's lunch time. Stupid JavaScript crap stealing my times

user41796
@JimmyHoffa real javascript hackers just skip lunch

6:59 PM
This guy did
had to make that lunchtime train out
Do I get to be a real javascript hacker now?

user41796
@Ampt No, you work for a corporate behemoth.

user41796
By definition, you are "unhip" and therefore cannot be a true javascript hacker.

but....but... I work for a small, hip, trendy company that got bought by a corporate behemoth

user41796
But you can pretend to be one. And if your corporate behemoth so wishes, you can participate in projects that churn out more and higher quality code than what several true javascript hackers combined could do.

thats fine, I didn't really want to be a javascript hacker anyway
I think that javascript has some very fundamental flaws and whoever decided that we should be running it on the server as well was nuts.

user41796
7:06 PM
@Ampt Oh, don't even get me started on that one

user41796
Crockford has got some crazy and interesting projects in place for that. I fear what the repercussions may be if they are successful.

And if javascript truly does become the language of the future and everything becomes a javascript app, I'm retiring and opening a brewery

user41796
Hee hee. Someone downvoted my duplicate abuse answer.

I kinda wonder what could be the reason to downvote this:

A: "You have asked terrible questions, please get away or ask better question"

gnatBased on your past questions, system decided to warn that you may be approaching question ban. This is described in more details in Warn new users when they ask a question after a previous question is closed, downvoted, or deleted at MSE (bold font in below quote is mine): Starting today, we...

user41796
@Ampt There will be a huge market for beer at that point

user41796

@gnat If the downvote is recent, I'm betting revenge for the duplicate answer question.

@gnat oh no site meta downvotes! the rep! :)

@GlenH7 seems recent to me, if memory serves it wasn't there yesterday...

Q: Make voting activity on your posts available on site metas (what you would get from rep if metas had rep)

Monica CellioChild metas don't have rep, so there's no point in tracking a rep stat or reporting changes. But one of the things rep updates do on main sites is to alert me when there's activity on older posts. On metas, unless I revisit a question I'll never notice that there's been a bunch of voting (which...

@enderland I cry over every meta DV!!!

user41796
@gnat 'cause they happen so rarely? ;-)

@GlenH7 of course! By the way, it's unlikely personal against me, I just noticed Oded's answer there is voted down as well

jeez, I better go upvote you to balance the rep out
oh wait.

user41796
7:17 PM
@Ampt It'll help the hurt feelings.

Oh no! Not hurt feelings! Upvotes for everyone!

user41796
@gnat I'm sure Oded has quite a few stalkers. Little do they know that he could figure out who downvoted.

Personally, I keep a tally next to my bed with all my downvotes, and reflect on them every night

user41796
@Ampt If that's the case, I don't think your girlfriend was upset about you buying a laptop. I think there's deeper issues to address.

Tim Post probably lost his keys again, is all.

A: Should 'drive by' down voting be more effectively caught?

Tim PostThe answer was down voted because I lost my keys. Please, stay with me, let me explain this odd chain of events. Earlier today I couldn't get to the store on time because I could not find my keys. That caused me to miss the opportunity to run over a golf ball, which would have bounced between a...

-1 for losing your keys. — GlenH7 11 secs ago

user41796
Of course, some idiot really will downvote the answer and then I'll look like the bad guy.

alas, I don't even have enough rep to upvote the answer

user41796
@Ampt Weird. You ought to have picked up a 100 rep site association bonus on MSE

I may have bountied that away

user41796
7:28 PM
@Ampt Indeed you did

@GlenH7 you better don't know how many guys I made look bad that way. It often happens that I stumble upon some answer having no DVs, see comment explaining what's wrong in there and vote down, based on that comment. I think I saw it alt least handful times that later, answerer was complaining that they were voted down by commenter :)

@gnat oops :)
I like how we had the opposite problem this morning
negative comment with no DV

user41796
@gnat Fine. Fine. Ruin my fun. At least the diamonds can still see my snark.

@Ampt now, when you make a critical comment, don't forget to add "any votes down that may appear after this comment are gnat's not mine"

user41796
@Ampt That's because we had failed to see the genius of the question and upvote it into orbit.

7:30 PM
@gnat as if I hadn't already been doing that

@gnat is there a suggestion somewhere to only show the review count for ones you can actually do?
I can't really find anything on meta

@enderland yes, I saw it at MSE recently

user41796
That request has been in place since the new review icon rolled out.

user41796
The answer I remember was "No, because it's too expensive on the DB to calculate individual tallies"

Oh. that's lame

user41796
7:32 PM
Of course, I may have paraphrased that a bit.

I basically stop doing reviews since I can't get rid of the icon anyways
I konw this is really pathetic but.... meh

user41796
Trying to say you need different bits of cheese to entice you?

No, more that when on smaller sites such as Workplace I cannot get rid of the queue even if I have 0s across the board makes the icon much less impactful, since I can't really affect it

user41796
You can make the number smaller....

@enderland I didn't stop reviews, but that's probably because I got used to totally ignore that useless indicator (otherwise, I'd probably stopped too)

7:47 PM
you mean the little red number?
mine only ever shows for suggested edits
not sure how that works

@Ampt you need moar rep

I can do close votes and reopen votes
and those never show up

@Ampt you'll get to see it soon, when you get 10K :)

A: Notify users of possible reviews on toolbar

Anna LearAs of a few minutes ago, we are replacing the pending suggested edit count in the top bar with the number of pending reviews for diamond moderators and folks with the "moderation tools" privilege (i.e. 10k users on graduated sites and whatever that level's at on betas): We are excluding the Cl...

Hahaaaa suckerzzzz
its still odd that the only thing that shows up for me there is suggested edits
from what I'm seeing, I should never see that at all
WTF?
