Average outlet in US is 120V +/- 10V. Most homes have access to 240V for dryers and AC. From the reading I just did, the primary issue is that all of your muscles contract from the electrical current. 10A (external application) was listed as being required to stop the heart. I didn't see any mention of effects upon the brain and perception though

user41796
so grabbing on to that 12kV line is going to be a very miserable experience for about 10 - 15 seconds. It takes that long for the brain to shut down from lack of oxygen.

I would assume the brain, being based on electro-chemical signals would be awash in electrical activity
much like a seizure

user20683
yeah

so I don't think you would feel much at all

user20683
it would also trigger your bladder and bowels

user20683
7:12 PM
if it was enough of a shock

not that you would need them at that point

user41796
@Ampt I'm not so sure. Or at least not sure enough that I'd even contemplate the experiment. :-) Friend of mine survived a heart attack. He said the pain from the muscle contractions was one of the absolute worst he's ever undergone. But that doesn't address whether or not the electrical shock would drown out the pain receptors from signaling.

I would assume so. They operate on the millivolt scale and you'd be subjecting them to kVs
it would all just be noise at that point

user41796
@Ampt I have learned not to make assumptions in these cases. :-) Interestingly, it only takes ~60mA of internally applied current to stop the heart. Internal application would come from an electrode or some other probe.

user20683
I have now installed node.js

How many hipster points did I just gain?

user41796
@Weston.h I was just about to make a snarky comment to that effect but thought better of it.

user20683
@GlenH7 honestly it's for using a git UI so whatever

not enough to wear a scarf but definitely more than necessary to consume a PBR

user41796
bonus hipster points for being cynical

@Weston.h 3, unfortunately the SE exchange rate is 1 SE point to 400k hipster points.
@Weston.h using git, now there's 8 more hipster points, you might actually be getting somewhere with this

7:19 PM
git is hipster?

user20683
@JimmyHoffa thinking about building APL or J with python functions

@Ampt What do rubyists use for source control?

user20683
What do pythonistos use? git

@Weston.h You just flushed those points down the toilet.

user20683
\o/

7:20 PM
(I actually have the J wikipedia page up now, been meaning to start looking at it)
Node.JS is all well and neat really. Good for all sorts of things

user20683
namely as a JS repl

@Weston.h Yeah, I would also see it as a fine scripting tool for administrative tasks with all it's IO facilities
How did this get 3 favorites immediately??

Q: Where do my programming skills stand in relation to other programmers

Win CoderI am a student currently studying an undergraduate CS course at a crappy university in a third world country. I do however have a continuous desire to improve myself. My Objective is to bring myself up to the standards of programmers in United States. To further that goal i program continuously(...

people want to know how they are doing. they enjoy feedback that they obviously aren't getting

and how many times will this crappy question be asked! @gnat take your finger off that dupe vote! If it's a crap question we close it, we don't dupe it to another crap question.
(or at least I wish that's what we did...)

Q: How Can I Know Whether I Am a Good Programmer?

Kristopher JohnsonLike most people, I think of myself as being a bit above average in my field. I get paid well, I've gotten promotions, and I've never had a real problem getting good references or getting a job. But I've been around enough to notice that many of the worst programmers I've worked with thought th...

user55340
@GlenH7 gnat used up all his votes?

user41796
@MichaelT I believe so, yes.

user55340
(because I just cast a dup vote on that one... and I'm out of votes now...)

user20683
@MichaelT pity, I just finished it off

user41796
7:26 PM
@Weston.h Thanks! Go for the kill move and delete it too! :-)

user20683
@GlenH7 nah, I'll leave it be for now

user41796
The painful part is we had almost the exact same question last week:

user41796

Q: How to rate your programming skills

VarunAgwI am a student joining graduation course this september. I have been coding from 4-5 years. I used to think that I was one of the best programmers in the world. Then I realized I'm not as I participated in Google Code-In this year. I somehow managed to do 2-3 easy tasks in GCI after facing so muc...

Am I remembering wrong in thinking there was meta post from I believe @YannisRizos speaking to not using dupe closure for questions that should be closed due to quality regardless of them being duplicates?
@GlenH7 We get this question like every other week...

Q: Is there any programmer's skill tree?

John PrestonI mean something like skill trees in RPG games, for example, like this Diablo 2 tree. So, when you want to do some rocket science (implement C# compiler), you have to reach this skill on tree and learn bunch of basic skills before that. Any suggestions? Or maybe someone can create this tree?

user41796
@JimmyHoffa which is why we need more delete voters. The one I linked only has 1 delete vote at the moment (mine)

Q: Evaluate one's skill and improve it?

GuapoI've taught myself a set of scripting and programming languages and right now I am very pleased with C#, I am the type of person that learns best by doing it and while I am able to create pretty much any kinda of application, my coding and skills are not as good as I wish. How could I evaluate m...

user55340
@GlenH7 Check again...

user55340
But crap is bad, and doesn't help SEO.

user41796
@MichaelT "just a few more, c'mon now....."

user55340
I'm suprised how long it took programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/196120/… to get deleted...

7:30 PM
Don't look at me with my measly 1.3k rep lol

user41796
@MichaelT almost makes me think there ought to be a delete review queue for 10k+'ers

user55340
There kind of is...

user41796
but I want me badges, me matey. badges, gotta have 'em

A: Voting to close - duplicate of a closed question

Yannis RizosLet's assume Q2 to be an exact duplicate of Q1, which is closed for any other reason. We close Q2 as a duplicate of Q1. And then Q1 is edited and reopened. Assuming the system works, Q1 wasn't closed for a trivial reason, if there was a chance to salvage it, we would have instead of closing it ...

user41796
@JimmyHoffa That's fairly old from a close philosophy point of view

user41796
I think there has been some MSO discussion around it, but I'm always afraid to go over there.

user20683
@GlenH7 It's not so bad. Being very drunk helps. How do you think Yannis manages over there?

user41796
@Weston.h I thought he kept repeating to himself "At least it's not politics.SE"

user20683
that too

user20683
7:36 PM
I'd never want to moderate one of the religion sites or politics. I might have the degree for it but nope. Just nope.

@Weston.h This explains his MSO rep

user20683
@JimmyHoffa I wish my SO/M.SO rep was better but I just like Programmers more

user20683
I prefer to debug my own code

user20683

user20683
I boils down to commitment to project

7:37 PM
That pretty much sums up my feelings for SO as a whole

user20683
here, we've got solid, conceptual stuff that will stand the test of time. There, it's hard to say what's obsolete and what isn't

interesting thought problems are fun but if I have to fire up a compiler to check behavior it's no longer as interesting

user20683
right

user20683
that's exactly it

user20683
I'd rather come across an interesting pattern here and be like "I wonder what that looks like in Python"

user41796
7:39 PM
I hate maxing out on my delete votes. I need MORE!

user20683
@GlenH7 run for mod

user20683
our field last time was...poor

user55340
Each 1k rep is 1 more delete vote.

user41796
@Weston.h no upcoming election afaik. And I think we ended up alright with the new mod that we got.

user20683
@GlenH7 true but there should have been more of a competition. half of the voters voted only for me and no one else

user55340
7:41 PM
Non-binding delete votes take much less flack than the ones who have a diamond after the name.

user41796
Although Yannis has offered to loan me his credentials so I can wreak havoc on the cruft....

user41796
@Weston.h because the choice was that overwhelmingly obvious. Duh.

user55340
@Weston.h There was good reason to cast it that way.

user20683
I'm not saying there wasn't

user41796
@Weston.h we know, but we're not going to let you dig out of this pit quite yet.

user20683
7:43 PM
By all accounts I've done a pretty solid job in the last 6 months

Q: Community Diamond Moderator has locked & deleted multiple answers but why?

user55340
You guys don't believe in Santa but think the Community user isn't human? BWAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAAHA — Tim Post yesterday

user41796
@MichaelT I think non-binding close votes take more flack. Binding Delete votes can only be found through the 10k+ tools, so the effects are much less likely to be seen.

user55340
@GlenH7 But the guy who had it deleted and disagrees with those evil mods... its harder to disagree with several people who are not inherently evil (they lack a diamond).

user55340
7:51 PM
I mean... they even complain about Community deleting their stuff and that he's a diamond mod.

user20683
It's really hard to disagree with me.

user55340
@Weston.h I disagree.

user20683
@MichaelT I see what you did there.

user41796
suspension in 3... 2... 1....

user20683
@GlenH7 nah, Michael's earned his keep

user41796
7:52 PM
Community Mod is evil. Frequently screws things up.

user20683
Community Mod is made of stupid

user20683
you should see the things it tries to do that I and the other mods are like "no, bad Community!" whacks with newspaper

user41796
@Weston.h I have seen some of the flags it raises. They really leave you shaking your head

user20683
@GlenH7 Like I said, "Made of Stupid".

user41796
I can't disagree with you in this case.

user41796
7:57 PM
some days I feel bad for anyone else looking at the chat logs who doesn't know where to pick up on the subtlety behind the banter

@Weston.h Why should there have been more of a competition, because so many people actually want to moderate here? hah. Your only real competition could hardly tolerate participating in meta or chat

user20683
true

user55340
Poke at the election stat gathering page - elections.stackexchange.com/#programmers.stackexchange

user41796
There's my excuse - I'm still working on my Sportsmanship badge

user20683
I still lack Copy Editor

8:03 PM
I lack a ton of badges

user41796
There's only 6 Copy Editor badges awarded on P.SE

user41796
So I need to work on that one too

user20683
Aye

user55340
I'm still wondering what the parallel universe "other mods won" are like.

user20683
I didn't even have Strunk and White when I was elected

Wow, this is the first time this comment has been both correct and helpful that I've seen:
Since this just pertains to design and doesn't include code, it would be best for Programmers SE. — Jamal 3 hours ago

@Weston.h Good point.
How's my edit, too much?

Q: Where should I put methods that make an Http Request to get data from a web service in iOS development?

Raphael OliveiraThis question is more about architecture / code design. I have a Model Car in my iOS application where it's parameters like name, year, value etc are fetched from a web service in order to fill a list with cars data. Where should I put the method that asynchronously goes to the server and ret...

user55340
@JimmyHoffa I was almost about to make the same edit.

user55340
I'd take out the first preamble and hard rule though.\

user55340
@Weston.h if you don't get an answer on TAOCP, it might be reasonable to consider punting it to CS.SE.

user20683
8:18 PM
@MichaelT I'll give it 24 hours at least

user20683
it's on topic for Prog and I'm trying to be less aggressive about punting decent questions that are technically on-topic

user55340
Its not off topic here at all, its just... getting into the nitty gritty of taocp tends to be over the heads of most (myself included) industry programmers.

@MichaelT That's just a simple algorithm, if you sat down and read through it you'd probably find the answer
TAOCP doesn't seem too difficult from a theory standpoint, it's just dense as a matter of information. Reading it is like (and often is) reading assembly, it's not complex, just takes some concentration

user20683
@JimmyHoffa

user20683
8:28 PM
And they say front end devs don't need math

user20683
:P

@Weston.h They don't, stuff like that they do for fun not for need; solving data processing problems in the back end needs math, front-end devs play math

user20683
@JimmyHoffa true

user20683
rejiggering my resume

user20683
gonna do it up properly formatted this time

@Ampt I think we drown it because someone tested it against a 2 by 4

9:08 PM
were we worried the 2x4 was a witch and would turn someone into a newt?

9:36 PM
@JimmyHoffa I didn't dupe vote, note the list of closers (hit the CV limit before that crap was posted)
