@GerhardBurger I feel it looks geeky because I edited the answer to generalize it; ie; if someone faces this issue and wants this to work with other applications as well (not only XBMC). Otherwise, there is a simple script (about 15 lines) and instructions on how to set it up so that we don't need to remember to execute it all the time. BTW, your answer involving caffeine is also very good. It didn't occur to me that there could be some application to prevent screensaver/sleep mode getting activated.
