Q: Dear Ubuntu, thanks but no thanks

AlexYou have made it very difficult to use your operating system. Your installation process is nice, kudos. But once the installation is done, why do I have to search random websites to find software installation instructions?!?!?!?! I am an average computer user, I need: VLC (videos), iTunes (musi...

seriously??
@mateo_salta edited it. Its a question now I guess..
and now my flag is worthless.

And now it's technically a duplicate of ... various.

lol
yup.

@Alvar got it.

12:13 AM
not a real question

Uhm ... that is a question. "How to get a server up and running?"

@FEichinger no, only the title is.

@FEichinger no
you install it and it's up and running

its basically "Tips, tricks and a tutorial on running a Apache server"
waaaaay to broad and not a Q

The body asks for instructions on how to set it up to get the test sites visible to clients.

12:15 AM
exactly
i'll answer it then....

I'd call it off-topic, if anything.
It has a specific use case and target, and it has some point to start at. We fill in what's in-between.

shrugs
well, I just popped in to clean the review queue. I'll BBL

@iSeth C ya

@iSeth Haven't used Ubuntu in half a year now, just using windows. Is more active now than when I was using Ubuntu. ;)

@Alvar Much better. I assume the asker also wants to know how to make that server publically visible, but I guess that can wait until it's confirmed.

12:25 AM
@FEichinger you install it and it's visible right? Has always worked for me.. btw you should move to the general room....

Also, what @jrg says, yes.
@Alvar Locally, yes. But I assume the'y're looking for a way to remotely show it to their clients. But, as I said, we'll see so, once the response comes in.

@FEichinger well apache has always worked straight out of the box for me so don't really know what he is asking for...

jrg
whats up?

oh, we were just discussing the same apache question in both channels.

jrg
ah, ok
lets just move it here then

12:30 AM
And I thought I'd subtlely ping you to tell you about that. :P

jrg
yeah, well, up until a moment ago, i was mobile.

adding apache2 info to my answer now...

@iSeth looks like I just delayed the inevitable, that q is going down in flames

jrg
@mateo_salta with the edit?

@jrg got those links? can't find them when searching...

Q: What's the easiest way to set up a LAMP stack?

jerhinesmithI set up a new VPS instance of Ubuntu and am wondering what the easiest way is to get up and running with a basic LAMP stack (i.e. which packages are required, which configuration options need to be tweaked, if any, etc.).

Q: For security reasons why should /var/www not have chmod 777?

Luis AlvaradoWhen opening a page from my server, I sometimes get a "Permission denied" error which I can solve by running chmod -R 777 /var/www. However, people are telling me that this is a bad idea for security reasons. Why should I not chmod /var/www 777?

Q: how to set up a ubuntu server to be (securely) available from internet?

Steve B(apologize in advance, I'm a pro-windows newly converted to ubuntu... if my questions are obvious, please tell me). I want to build a ubuntu server continuously connected to the internet. I own only IP address. The main purpose of the server is to serve as a source code controller (probably git ...

Q: What's the best way of handling permissions for apache2's user www-data in /var/www?

gyaresuHas anyone got a nice solution for handling files in /var/www/ ? We're running Name Based Virtual Hosts and the apache2 user is 'www-data' We've got two regular users & root. So when messing with files in /var/www ,rather than having to... chown -R www-data:www-data ...all the time, wh...

@jrg booo...ya! baby

jrg
@RickGreen-Turbo yeah!
oh, while i'm thinking of it...

@jrg what now

jrg
@iSeth you seem to be pretty enthusiastic with the cleaning, maintenance and janitorial work, so i'm going to make use of my room ownership and add you.

@jrg @iSeth OH no, here it comes........been there, done that..........Warning Will Robinson......

jrg
12:48 AM
lol

turbo is changing his name and going underground
DEEP under
@jrg Remenber about six months ago...........5K rep..........looking at 10K for some tools If you know what I mean

jrg
so you want me to go bounty off my 11K all to you huh?

@jrg give it to me instead ;)

jrg
@RickGreen-Turbo ok, so here's the deal.
i spend time in the 10K tools. they aren't... intuitive.

12:53 AM
@jrg got my attention..........???

Way to go *hiiiiint*, @jrg.

jrg
no. i'm serious.

hurry up I got to go PEEEEEEE
what

jrg

lol

jrg
12:54 AM

@jrg and, is there more??

@jrg You know what's slightly depressing? I would have coded it barely different from that.

jrg
these are some of ugliest parts of SE. i've spend a year trying to use them, and finding things in there is still difficult.
@FEichinger the /review is what they should look like.

@FEichinger you are a funny, funny little man
2

@RickGreen-Turbo maybe it's true..... ooo spooky.

12:56 AM
@jrg I find /review awful, tbh.

jrg
/review is so helpful compared to all the other moderation tools out there. other than to moderator only ones. but those aren't really useful, except for certain things that I can't talk about. :P
@FEichinger it can be a bit hairy sometimes, but it's not that difficult.
compared to what it was.

/review is awesome for community efforts, yes. But as actual moderation tools, it just feels wrong.

If this is all ya GOT I Quit.....

jrg
@FEichinger trust me when i say they do a good job. i'd have a hard time getting a better designed thing for the job.
other than suggested edits. the old one was better.

@jrg still haven't heard the proposal...........
serious
really serious

jrg
12:59 AM
@RickGreen-Turbo my point is that the existing tools in /review are really good compared to the 10K tools.

never mind, I wet myself

Let's go for the middle ground. /review would need quite a bunch of tweaks for the 10k tools.

jrg
nah. not really.
just add in a few queues for delete votes, undeletes, nothing big.

I got puddles.......
swimming now

I think actual moderation tools need lists rather than queues, though. Queues promote sloppy "get past it" behavior.

jrg
1:04 AM
the diamond tools are like that. but at the same time, it also promotes a "get past it, nail them" behaviour.

So that's why nothing happens :P

wow

Wait ... did he ... answer his own question asking himself if the links helped?
Wut is dat?

jrg
1:06 AM
yeah
i saw that.

That makes no sense!

@jrg he is talking to himself in third person...

Well, he's trying to make some sort of link collection regarding hardware-recommendations.
But that is neither a , nor does it exceed and the search in actual usefulnests, nor does it contain any actually useful info.

the third person thing makes it all a bit creepy...

1:15 AM
I'd go with NARQ, perhaps?

It does that to RolandiXor as well.
RolandiXor is leaving...

jrg
bye @RolandiXor

Hey, I started the whole talking-to-oneself-in-third-person thing ...

@RolandiXor bye :)

After @Mochan and @iSeth started talking about me ... in front of me.

1:16 AM
@jrg has been responded to.
@Alvar as well.

@FEichinger Mochan started it. She just asked me if you had got an invite to my party

@iSeth only rules are: try to keep it on topic, and don't have wild rave parties in here. unless we hit 80% answered rate, in that case, party away.

Have we come to a conclusion about the holy mother of tags, btw?

don't know using windows now and haven't been using Ubuntu in the last half year...

@FEichinger what is the tag

@Alvar R U backwards or what

@RickGreen-Turbo just a gamer, and Spotify and eclipse work better in Windows...
And I hate Unity...
I rather use Windows than Unity.

I don't rally like any DE ... I use Unity cause I don't give a flying, it doesn't need any further config to work like I need it and it is included in the default install anyway.
Heck, I need nothing but some kind of editor and a local apache server ...
It's just a matter of keeping work on a ... well, working system. yay-bad-puns

@FEichinger gedit and apache == win

1:34 AM
Pretty much. Firefox as well, to view it in a proper browser.

@FEichinger firefox isn't good anymore, Use Chrome.

Chrome is bloated while it offers nothing additional out of the box.
Firefox is bloated as well, but at least it has some working dev tools.

@FEichinger you don't need anything more than adBlock and that exist.
@FEichinger true, never used dev tools for chrome so have no idea...

Firebug > Chrome's dev tools thingy
And Firebug is installed much more easily than any chrome extension I've found.

firebug is awesome.. used it while I was learning web security :)

1:37 AM
Really, if Chrome had offered a better experience earlier than .. what do we have now, version 30?
I'd probably have used Chrome. But now? No way I'm gonna swap.

well I downloaded hackerfox with all the necessary tools and extensions :).

would agree

firefox is chasing chrome in version numbers instead of developing it like they should...

Oh, I have a better reason even: Chrome is so bad, it doesn't come pre-installed on Android.
Anyways, we're drifting very far off-topic here.

1:38 AM
who use android when you can use iOS! ;)

@RickGreen-Turbo LOL

@FEichinger yeah... this is the new general room
@RickGreen-Turbo wow, heavy answer.

@RickGreen-Turbo I still say: Kill that question with fire. Right the hell now.

erm, if you're stuck on windows some things that don't work properly on any other browser including firefox work on chrome. just saying

jrg
@FEichinger i don't see any flags.

1:40 AM
@FEichinger 911 i'll get the hose

@jrg I am pretty sure I flagged it.

jrg
@FEichinger chrome dev tools kick firebug, sorry. firefox is a better browser all-around though.
@FEichinger i don't see anything.

firefox is better for developers, chrome is better for users, the end.

Hmmm ... Neither does my flag history. Weird.
I thought I'd flagged it as NARQ ... Well ... Flagging it again, then.

@FEichinger you were powned by jrg ;)

1:42 AM
i used to like FF. then i had to admin/support a site that only renders properly on chrome from a win8 basic install

jrg
@FEichinger and i won't handle the flag, since i've already made my opinions on that question somewhat clear. i'll let foss or bruno take care of it.

@Alvar He can't remove flags, afaik, so ... I guess the system didn't get it.

@FEichinger or did it? ;) no just kidding...

jrg
no, i can't remove flags.

right cleaning was it...

1:44 AM
They would show up in my history at least. Which this one doesn't ... Well, now it does.

remove flags would be just wrong, so I'm happy now :)

jrg
@mateo_salta ..................................

Q: How to get the "Get R Done" hat

mateo_saltaHow to get the "Git R Done" hat for the Hats. I would like to have this hat, It is a cool hard hat. Pictured below:

@RolandiXor the cake is a lie

1:58 AM
askubuntu.com/questions/234187/install-flash-for-firefox-20-0a1 I just got spanked...... @jrg what did you do now?

@Alvar indeed.

:)

BTW check the review queue, I have questions there to be closed.

jrg
@RickGreen-Turbo you managed to attract multiple "not a answer" flags. :S

@RolandiXor Never realized there was a review button in the menu :S

2:00 AM
choke....but, it was an answer. The question justified the answer. The answer didn't justify the question NAH
@jrg never mind. I'll quit being a smart ass

lol, that didn't "Get R Done"

i voted to close the damn question 2

@RickGreen-Turbo It wasn't the answer is needed, but the anwer it deserved.

@mateo_salta u need more up votes...

I had one (for a moment)

2:04 AM
@Alvar :>

@FEichinger I know, I know

Q: Will installing Ubuntu on one partition affect the files on another?

RyanIf I create a partition to backup files in windows before installing Ubuntu, is that partition safe after installing Ubuntu? Also I plan on replacing Windows 7 with Ubuntu.

One vote here to mark answered.

I would go more with duplicate on this, since it's duplicate of all the links he have stated in his answer... askubuntu.com/q/234210/10698

2:08 AM
I could get a hat if this were voted on askubuntu.com/a/232667/46312
I want one

@Alvar I NARQ'd it, cause the entire premise of the question is, well, wrong.

Q: How to undo forgetting new packages in aptitude

zubaCan't remember how many new packages there were before I've choosen that menu item. Does aptitude remember forgotten packages after rerun?

Anyone know the answer to this?

"I don't think you can."?

(I've noticed a terrible shortage of votes on both questions and answers, we need to fix that).

@FEichinger would you, could you edit it to make it better?

2:10 AM
@RickGreen-Turbo The thing is, the intention of that question was nothing but to link all questions with a similar target. That's what tags are for.

@RolandiXor I been blowing 40 votes a day

@RickGreen-Turbo gg

@FEichinger that could be fixed too

Editing the question to a "real" "Where to get an ubuntu laptop?" does make it a multiple duplicate - of all the links in the answer (Which is also a NARA, actually, as it only asks "does this help you?").
So, either edit + close as dupe or close as narq.
Why the edit when it should be closed anyway? Get my drift?
Of course we could consider a canonical question to that, but ... I don't think we need that yet. I haven't seen a recent rise in questions about that.

askubuntu.com/questions/234210/… BTW he got the Git-R-Done hat @mateo_salta
you want to close the question as NARQ

2:18 AM
"How can I buy a freedom-respecting Unix laptop " - What?!?!?!
@mateo_salta I'll vote to close that question since it has no purpose
meta.askubuntu.com/q/5638/10698 Close this question, it's just a "scam" so that he could get the hat. it's not an answer you need. it's stated in the info that you got when you entered the competition.
there's no point of it...

you could answer it @Alvar

@mateo_salta no I can't since there is no point of the question. just close it.

@jrg help me close this...

eh, whatever

2:22 AM
or you can just remove it.

now no one will know how to get r done :(

I really need to sleep now. Good night all! :)
@mateo_salta they will by visiting winterba.sh

we still don't know if it works on meta

Okay, I'm gonna be a bit blunt: Who cares?

@FEichinger d*mn right!

2:24 AM
or how long you have to have +1, way to ruin a little fun

Seriously, it's an overlay for your avatar. That's. It. Don't be so bloody obsessed with it, for god's sake.

yes, true

@Mochan I'm out of watches, but you can have a wall clock :P
Plus, I made modifications to your hands, they're pretty awesome now... you'll love them

2:34 AM
@RolandiXor Screw that.
@RolandiXor Awesome...! Are they made of gold?

Platinum.

Or... since it's you - gold-plated?
@RolandiXor -plated.

Nope :P

Yaaaaaaaay!
But they would be heavy ;(

2:35 AM
I was only faking the spammer get up...
@Mochan not with the antigravity features.

Solid platinum hands ... Ouch.
@RolandiXor Wouldn't anti-gravity features also make them entirely useless?

@FEichinger nope ;)

Whatever, just sew em back on.

Not when you can fly...

2:39 AM
@Mochan they will reattach themselves in a few minutes.

@RolandiXor I'm scared!

Don't worry, I've tested them... on a dummy, but tested them anyway.
