hello people how you been?

if something is not in the software center, would you compile from source or add-apt-repository?

depends on the time you have

12:28 AM
quickest meas possible

the latter

why aren't the repositories added by default? Why force the user to use this command?

freedom plus its a good way to learn

if an inode contains information about a file, such as permissions, owner, type, everything but file contents and name, then is a "file" the actual data structure that stores the contents of a file?

no
i think not according to this article
http://www.linfo.org/inode.html

12:48 AM
the articel you linked says this;
"A file is a named collection of related information that appears to the user as a single, contiguous block of data and that is retained in storage."
what is "related information"?
is that not the file contents stored in memory on disc drivers?

related info might be date of creation, size
it is

1:54 AM
@JohnMerlino Yes, let's add all the random repos by default! Surely, that will work out well. There are default repos, whatever ends up in there went through a selection process, what doesn't can be added by the user.

@AryoAdhiWibisonoLegopermono: if its based off ubuntu it should work

7:29 AM
hi
@JourneymanGeek so it works for Ubuntu and its derivatives...
If my PC processor is 64-bit, and my Windows is 32-bit, can I install Ubuntu 12.04 from Wubi, 32 or 64-bit?
Oh, my Windows is Windows XP

@AryoAdhiWibisonoLegopermono you can install 64-bit Ubuntu, but do consider dual-boot as Wubi is going to be deprecated.
Backup data before you install & partition.

Oli
@AryoAdhiWibisonoLegopermono And Wubi is slower than a native install.

wubi isn't really supported any more

Oli
And I don't quite know how to say this without seeming racist or at the very least just mildly offensive... But your name is incredibly long, @AryoAdhiWibisonoLegopermono!
Now I've written that it seems pretty silly. You're probably well aware of how long your name is.

even running non-Linux software or even Windows soft is on topic... we are so open minded \o/

Completely offtopic but does anybody have any suggestions on how I might locate a genuine Wordpress/PHP genius, available for hire? I've talked with three people so far this morning who seem to think that customising a template and installing a plugin makes them an "expert".

Q: HAProxy should not forward incoming request to down instance

ok. lemme check.

@charlie this question is kind of vague.
I presume you are running ubuntu right now?

12:13 PM
which one do you think is vague? I may provide additional info
I am at work now, but can check my ubuntu laptop when I reach home tonight

did you accept the popup from firefox/chromium when it asked "do you want to install facebook" ?
lets see if we can figure out the indicator issue first.

yes

then I'll help you with the other question.

okay sure

do you have dconf editor installed?
search for it in the dash

12:15 PM
yes i do
I cant access ubuntu from work...I have it installed at home though
can you jsut check and see if you can post answers to the question links....I'll check at home if you need any work done/feedback

you are currently at work?

unity tweak tool is awesome!

@Takkat we climbed up a dozen places or so. currently #68 in the top rated list

\o/ great news :)

:D

12:25 PM
you deserve this.
It should be top < #10

I can not believe it was such a huge success. :D

people love tweaking.

With the update, I am confident it will climb higher

congrats @Mahesh ... what list are you referring to?

@fossfreedom USC top rated section, raring

12:27 PM
link?
or in the app itself?

not sure if there's an online page..
fire up USC, click more on the top rated section and you'll find it. :D

@Mahesh ... do you know anybody in the ubuntu website team that can fix your unity-tweak-tool web-link? apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/unity-tweak-tool

apps.ubuntu.com doesn't list raring yet. :( pinged Jorge but got no reply.

so all raring-only apps 404 until its fixed.

12:31 PM
I'll give them six months... :P

hahahah..
I'm already considering hopping on to saucy
I kind of love the way Unity is shaping up, though I get irritated at times by canonical's i-don-know-what-to-call-it

have they started the sync with debian yet?
unity-next ? That will have to drop into saucy otherwise I cant see how the next LTS can ship with it.

no idea. they carried forward raring repos, and were planning to sync debian when I last checked.
yup that. I don't think marky will ship an LTS with the new thing. he'll prefer testing.
I'm waiting for the smart scopes.
and the next step, voice controlled HUD on desktop.
and get rid of evolution totally.

ahhh ... all those nice new stuff ... I'll get to use it when 14.04.1 arrives.

which will require a redesign of indicator-datetime, and a contacts app.
@fossfreedom your workstation runs ubuntu?

12:38 PM
I run 12.04 ... I only use the standard releases in VM's

Q: Which Stackexchange site should I use to ask questions about the Windows OS?

Brenton HorneI have some questions regarding Windows 7 and I would like to find a website that's an appropriate place for me to ask them and since I have had a good experience with stackexchange I thought I would stick to it if possible.

@jokerdino how is that meta on topic...?

it isn't. but i am going to let it pass until he replies

you won't mind that i've VTC:OT'd it would you?

Firewall for Ubuntu?

UFW

Anything else?
I'm looking for a firewall or script which will ask me for confirmation when a program tries to connect to the Internet...
Anything like that is available?

don't know of any
but you'd be getting a TON of those requests
TBH if you want to restrict your internet like that you just have a highly restrictive outbound ruleset in iptables

3:38 PM
Oh...

@Hrishi and I say a ton because you've got the update manager going and checking...

In that case I'll use the feature block permanently ;)

you've got other software sometimes checking for updates on their own...
you've got your web browsers...
/me could go on but wont because reasons.
@Hrishi mind if i ask specific reasons/usecase?

I want a firewall like that because I limited Internet connection. I want to use every bit of data for browsing. I don't want to waste to check for update and automatic update etc.

ah...
I know there's a way to disable autochecking for updates...
but I HIGHLY advise you keep your update checker online
because security updates

3:43 PM
Ya.. I know..

@Hrishi lemme guess though:
mobile internet, or...
highly restrictive internet bandwidth limits
right?

Yes.. Mobile Internet :D

Hmm

as long as you don't tell the system to actually UPGRADE
autoupdates won't use THAT much bandwidth
and it's not like it checks that often
(it just pulls a list of updated packages, is all, similar to apt-get update, but doesn't download the packages themselves)

Adobe creative cloud.....
wtf

3:46 PM
@TheLordofTime I see..

@Hrishi so i don't think you need to be THAT restrictive with your internet usage, I've only ever seen apt-get update runs take up to 20 MB on first update, and its usually a LOT lower usage after that
and to be honest, I've used mobile internet too, i keep a 4g mobile hotspot with me all the time
and I don't need to restrict my outbound rules.
/me restricts his inbound rules though... :P

Mine is 2G.. :(
Anybody here uses Emacs?

@Hrishi that's... really old tech...

Ya.. My bad luck..
4G is highly priced here..

what country?
(3g's still better than 2g you know)

3:50 PM
India.
@TheLordofTime Which version of Ubuntu you are using?

@Hrishi right now? 12.04, via a VM because my system is being stupid
but usually LTS or the release prior to the latest release.

@TheLordofTime Oh.. I'm on 13.04

@Hrishi it'd be the same regardless
:P
unless there's bugs that've slipped under my radar

13.04 is giving me hard time with my brightness hotkey :(

see, it's usually irrelevant because I'm usually hooked up to an external monitor :P

4:01 PM
Aahh..
So.... Is there anyway we could make a GUI program run in background even after closing its window? I want to run BeatBox in background just like Rhythmbox..

@Hrishi minimise the window, or put it on a different workspace. If the app itelf doesn't support daemon mode, there's not much you can do.

fair point. i have trouble distinguishing the doesn't know users from the i think they should merge users.
