I'm new to Unix/Linux and someone suggested I try Ubuntu. I like it but I can't figure a couple of things out and don't really have time to google up ways to solve the problem. Answers from a quick search were so confusing. Can someone provide me with a straightforward set of instructions with ea...
so i've been wondering about putting slightly tweaked kernel checksums in to keyslots for luks partition on a tablet (build in something random so your kernel doesn't produce the same checksum as everyone else's). seems like an interesting way to perform kernel validation (luks doesn't mount your data if you swap out the kernel type of thing) and just slap in whatever login mechanic you want
Dell Inspiron 15R Battery has made great strides through historical past. With the creation of the very first electric battery, that was made up of paper and also salt water combined along with metals, these kind of wonders of harvested power have developed in full capacity in that thousand-folds...
hey all, I just received an answer to my question in main that has piqued my curiosity of something. Is there a command which tells you which partition the currently running ubuntu os is on?
would you install the default LAMP server when setting up a new installation even if you never have any intention to use PHP. I will use apache and mysql but never php.
So this is a blatant spam account. The profile description is spam and the profile pic is that of a pretty girl, probably taken without the consent of the owner. Only post is blatant spam. The issue with spam accounts was discussed here. So should this account be deleted?

when i install squid3, i configure my network on squid.conf as 'acl localnet src 192.168.1.0/24' , then i configure proxy settings in my browser. After that it stops the browsing and a message displays that proxy server has stopped your access. And when i give http access to the local net by addi...
I posted this on ServerFault and got some helpful-looking questions, but no answer in terms of what can I do. What, on a low level, can I do to completely exorcise a package that is jamming aptitude upgrades?

@jrg Just thanking you for adding the Ask Ubuntu info into the community website support draft (I am responsible for that page) and I don't know what your timezone is, so extremely sorry.
I recently bought an external drive (mediasonic probox), which I wanted to use to store files and serve them up via samba on my small home PC that has ubuntu server 12.10. Not being very familiar with linux, I stumbled through various guides to try and set it up, but wasn't able to access the dri...

There were a bunch of great questions this morning in the close queue because they were about 13.04. It doesn't make sense to close them just because 13.04 is a few days away. We're supposed to be getting "looser" as 13.04 solidifies, after all, we can't update all the questions on the site at on...
I have a dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and CentOS 6.2 minimal computer. I am connecting a usb webcam with 10 meter usb extension cable. CentOS was able to recognize the webcam as /dev/video0 while Ubuntu was unable to recognize it as /dev/video0.
But both are able to recognize webcam when connected...
The server (usually) withholds the PHP code entirely and only sends the interpreter's final output buffer. Without file access on the server, you won't get the raw PHP.
How would I go about installing Ubuntu 32 and 64 bit 12.10 on the same disk? I would really like to do this if you could help. I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 64bit ATM if that helps.
Edit: What I meant was installing the install cd for both 32 and 64bit on the same disk not the OS itself.

I've seen all the questions about this on Ask Ubuntu, but all of them are about "How to disable them for copy/paste".
In my case, I am not interested in that, but I was wondering why do the Shift + Arrow Keys result in one of the A, B, C or D letters. Why not other letters? Why any letter at all?

Alright. So I've got a dell inspiron 1100. When I try to install Lubuntu 12.10, It install sjust fine, except for the resolution. The resolution s 600x480, and only displays in the top left-hand corner. Same issue occurs when I install Fedora, OPENSuse, Linux Mint, and even Ubuntu 12.10. I've been googling, and my results are all resolved with /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which isn't anywhere to be found. The other thing is that When I use the Live CD, it displays just fine.
I really perfer linux to windows, can somebody help me resolve this and display the full 1024x768? Again it's a dell inspiron 1100, Intel i845 processor, BIOS A32, 120gb Hard Drive, 768 mb ram, and currently I have windows xp installed with SP3. Someone please help.
I have an old clunker - Dell Inspiron 1100 with A32 BIOS.
I managed to install correctly from a USB drive, and the screen showed graphics in full natice 1024 x 768 - as did the 'try from USB' Ubuntu option.
Once I committed to a full install on the HDD, the video resolution comes up as 640 x 480 ...

I made a couple of earlier posts regarding a libssl-dev that, it seemed, was not removable. Some of the replies touched on that there was a problem with apt, and now that someone posted the command to force uninstalling a package, I only have an issue with ack:

@Rinzwind This is the VT100 escape code for Shift-up. It also happens in the tty: type 'read', 'enter', then simply 'up'
Typing Shift-A sends ^[[1;2A to the terminal, but the terminal only displays what he wants, terminal emulators only display A - not sure why exactly
Typing 'up' sends ^[[A, but the terminal knows what to do with it (up in history)
(I meant "Typing Shift-up", not "Typing Shift-A", sorry)
old terminals used such escape codes to control special on-screen operations - terminal emulators were designed to be compatible with such terminals - the key <-> escape code is described in terminfo nowadays
Terminal emulators such as gnome-terminal ("Terminal" in Ubuntu) but also xterm and urxvt are named "emulators" because they reproduce the behavior of older terminals which were the only display of a computer. Such terminals communicated with the computer with a text-based protocol and were initi...
