@Seth sup?

8:25 PM
@Lucio Only if you want to set it globally. If you want to set it per-user, which is usually the right way to do it, then you should not use /etc/environment. In that situation, you can use .pam_environment inside your home directory, instead. (Which is also covered on that page.) Also, if it needs to be set conditionally, so that its content depends on something that has to be tested, then it will have to be set in a script file.
Also, I'm not sure what they mean when they say that setting it in a script file (like .profile in the home directory) is "Not recommended anymore." But so long as you're adding entries to PATH, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, and in fact that's done in the default .profile file, to add the user's private bin directory only if it exists.
To add directories to the end of a PATH, make sure $PATH appears on the right hand side of the assignment (and is separated from other entries, in Bourne-style shells like bash and sh, the separator is :). For example, you could have export PATH=$PATH:/some/directory:/some/other/directory to add directories to the end of PATH. Or export PATH=/some/directory:/some/other/directory:$PATH to add them to the beginning.
You can even add some to the beginning and some to the end in one command: export PATH=/some/directory:$PATH:/some/other/directory Please note that where a directory appears in the PATH matters, because when you run a command whose first word contains no / character, it gets matched against the file of that name in the first directory in $PATH to contain it.

@EliahKagan Thanks for your reply. The article is very useful and complete, but is not very simple to understand objectively..

Good grief.

Q: How do I automatically set my touchpad to turn off when an external mouse is used?

JasonI need a way to automaticallay turn the touchpad off when an external pointing device is in use. I tried setting "turn off touchpad while typing" in System Settings, but that didn't work. A slight caveat is that I use both bluetooth and USB pointing devices, so perferably a solution would be ...

@jrg If you're still here, the comments on the above question could use some cleaning up --^
The first three or so. Please leave mine though, because the OP hasn't seen them yet.
@EliahKagan It now needs re-open votes :/

@Seth none of the comments were constructive - all have been removed - and I've reopened the Q since you've edited it briliantly - cheers

@fossfreedom Thanks. On second thought the OP didn't need to see my comment since we understand the problem.

yep - agreed.

any suggestions to improve my question ?

Q: Looking for practical examples explaining apt-* commands

SuhaibIn terminal, if you type apt- and press tab, You will end up with these suggestions: I know how and where and why to use apt-add-repository apt-get apt-key As for the rest, I want to see some practical examples explaining how to use these commands for a newbie in Ubuntu like me. EDIT: I...

9:06 PM
I think I have some. Lemme look at it some more.
@Suhaib I have suggested an edit for you to review.
Go ahead and either approve it or reject it based on what you think of it.

@Seth thanks

9:32 PM
@GeorgeEdison yeah, and it needs the sign up. I was looking into it... I might do it if I can figure out some ipad making stuff, and all the things to get it into the store. then the fee would have more than one use.

At least we're not trying to get it into the Mac app store :P

Hey folks.
Before I go about editing this, askubuntu.com/questions/262555/…
Was there a reason that one can see, why both Jorge and Luis duplicated all the original info?
in the last hour

@GeorgeEdison yeah, did you read up on the things that you had to do to get a qt app in there

jrg
@Seth looks like someone did it already

@mateo_salta I just read up on the restrictions that any app going in there is faced with.

9:39 PM
@GeorgeEdison also there is the "team" sign up, developer.apple.com/programs/mac/team.html as I'm not sure If I can do all the signing and stuff myself, maybe sometime down the road. Right now its a "forget it Apple" type of thing for me.

Yeah, I'm okay with just leaving it for now.

I was talking to one of my friends that developed for the ipad (sadly he didn't know qt) and he said that you can make an app for it with just the virtural machine - before buying the developer thing. (or an ipad)

@Seth Don't you think that the picture tag should be a synonym of image?
I ask you this because, first, I don't have the enough rep, and second, you like the tags :P

9:57 PM
Hi guys, am making an Nvidia/Ati/Intel general solution answer here askubuntu.com/questions/61396/…
if anybody has Ati knowledge it would be great to create an answer there providing more info about them.

how is this not a dupe of all the skype multi-arch problems? is someone trying to make a skype master question? askubuntu.com/questions/271683/…

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I think it probably is a dupe of one of them. I don't think that's a attempt to create a canonical question. It seems like it's just another instance of the problem, or a related problem. Do you know the best question to close it as a duplicate of? I'm out of close votes "today" but I will be able to VTC again in a couple hours.

Can someone look at this:
Seems like a weird decision. Assumedly many people bork their system and want to fix it. Three methods are recommended from searches on this site. Little reference is made to the pros & cons of any of them relative to the others (that I found). Further, I'm aware that there are various ways to structure partitioning; I chose a simple style and am probably not alone. It may be that this choice has been disadvantageous over time, and hence this could represent an excellent opportunity to change style. Recommending this could change the recommended repair type, hence it's pertinent. — dez93_2000 5 mins ago

@EliahKagan I can't think of any particular one. Skype multi-arch in the search box should turn up a bunch, I just have the close-hammer too liberal so I don't do initial closes

@Lucio There's no tag. The tag has 4 questions in it. The tag is ambiguous--it's used to refer both to graphical images and to images in the sense of ISO and squashfs. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend making something like point to it even if we did have a lot of questions in . But since we only have a few, the solution seems simple--we can simply retag the 4 questions under .

10:12 PM
Good point.

@Seth I'ld edit out the link... seems like an ad driver question

I don't have the necessary score to propose a synonym in that tag anyway.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing OK. I think he should just do a full reinstall anyway.

Yes. Basically he just said I should do a - a command, b - a command, c - a link ostensibly to his blog, right?

lol
yeah something like that.

@GeorgeEdison @mateo_salta - MacOSX third party market MUST exist

10:18 PM
@Seth I'm not sure where they got the idea that those are the primary methods. The first two methods are probably irrelevant to the problem that user has, though it's hard to know because the information given about the problem is minimal. That question was rightly closed as NARQ. I've commented.

@EliahKagan Thank you.

Q: There should be a way to link from closed-questions to bug-reports

MarkIt is somewhat common for a question to be off-topic because it is too bug-report like. This is certainly a legitimate reason for closing a question. One problem, however, is that unless there is a way of subsequently adding a link to a bug-report, the (closed) question is useless to anyone who...

Q: Why is the Shipping so expensive

user143387i was visiting your onlystore for a few times and I saw a lot of things which I would like to buy. So I put them in my Cart, but when I said Checkout in my Card it says to me that I have to pay 30,00€ for the shipping. This is more then the things I want to buy so thats very bad. Why is the Shipp...

@EliahKagan I totally forget about the ISO. You're right.

@Seth Re your comment: 30,00€ is pretty definitely 30.00€ ... Not everyone uses/used Imperial, you know? ;)

Ah. I wondered. Removed that part. Anyway.. Canonical's store is expensive..
50-60 Euros for a backpack is rather expensive.
Here anyway.

Oh, Europe is used to paying a crapton of money for nothing.
That ... sounded more cynical than it was supposed to.

I'm not worried about it.

11:11 PM
Wait wut?
HAPPENING NOW: U.S. signs agreement for fight w/ North Korea. @clawrenceCNN reports #OutFront #CNN

What did you expect?
This is politics after all...

NK was entirely out of my mind recently. That came ... a little out of the blue now.

Oh.
Stuff been happening over there supposedly.

:O
For those how like the promp of js, this app is just great.

@Lucio Ooh. Spiffy.

11:17 PM
spiffy ... WTF?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing stackoverflow.com/questions/11711392/… so basically the user is greeted with a message that the app can't run, and the solution for users - is to change a setting that has a message like "disable all security", so you can run things... just not on a "allow this app only" basis - basically all or nothing.

11:34 PM
@Seth I already visited that page ;)
still, I don't understand :(
@FEichinger Another bet?

spiffy = nice and new, fancy, neat, cool = he likes what you posted

@mateo_salta Oh, nice

A: Wine won't run ANYTHING

Dimitris Theodoridiswine opens windows applications that can be opened in windows only trough windows explorer, as name says WIN+E (windows explorer). some applications requires other windows components that does not come with wine ( windows explorer only ).

WIN+E (windows explorer) ... Really??!
@TheLordofTime Exactly.

you'll notice the downvote and the comment of "How does this anser the question?"
now, all we need is a mod to check the flags queue and the answer will go *poof*

@TheLordofTime Exactly.
:P

of course, we could just use the NULL rifle on it... tosses a NULLrifle to one of the mods

11:40 PM
banrifle!!!!

no, we save that for spammers.

@TheLordofTime Just try it!! :D
Now I wont help him :P

@Lucio Huh?

avatar

11:43 PM
@Lucio i only take the banrifle out when the SPAMCON is 3 or higher.
spamcon.current();

Screw. You. Firefox.

user image
3
^ that's the current spam condition :P

cool blue

/me took the images from Wikipedia and threw them up on one of his domains, and calls it the SPAMCON system. :P
oh and fun fact.
the current.png is a symlink.
it links to whatever the actual condition is.
if you open it now, it's at 5.

@TheLordofTime I've already saw that picture in Wikipedia :D

11:45 PM
refresh, it'll be at 4 :P

@Lucio Oh sorry. Was afk.

np

and now 5 again.
/me loves symlinks

All I get is 4.

cache purge
and refresh

11:47 PM
Oh, there we go.

You know, I have changed my system language to English, so I can take screenshoots more useful for all the users in this web site. :)

it would be cool if we had a bot to announce the spam conditions..
@Lucio Oh? That's very thoughtful of you.

@TheLordofTime IKR

@Seth if @GeorgeEdison can help with the coding of both the bot and the backend, I can try and set one up.
but first I have to set up a tracking system in PHP

@Seth there is the one bot in the sandbox, it can learn stuff

11:51 PM
What are we doing?

and that'll take a little time.

@GeorgeEdison having a bot for the spam con

@mateo_salta Oh? Lemme go look..

which needs a LOT more tweaking first
/me needs to have mod logins so mods can change it :P
i'm going to be digging around in PHP for the next three months, I think :/

@mateo_salta which sandbox ?

11:52 PM

 Sandbox

Where you can play with regular chat features (except flagging...

Of that one.

@TheLordofTime PHP? No, no, no, no.
5
Don't waste your time learning PHP.
3

@GeorgeEdison Not the bot, the backend to change the symlink.

Oh, okay.

11:57 PM
I.E. a passcode I only give the mods, verification of taht code, adn then change the symlink using a PHP web interface.
thereby I don't have to give shell access to change the symlink
the bot can be $languageOfChoice
the backend for PHP, easy if I hide the processing script as a separate PHP file :P
:O
BITCOINS!
/me just received 1.036 bitcoins.
