That will be helpful imo

@edwinksl What does LTS stand for?

LTS =Long Term Support

long-term support

5 years of support :)

sorry... I was writing an equally useless message to Anwar about how I need many many more upvotes to see the deleted answer

6:03 PM
@Zanna you will get there in no time

It will not take much time I think

@anwar, are you on telegram? o.O

btw, the message was for mods
@jokerdino was. not using these days

yes, hence useless message :)

Testing new software is a hobby :D

6:05 PM
@AnwarShah considering that OP deleted his own answer and made an edit addressing one of the comments left on his question, I think the problem is back and he is looking for an answer once again.

2buntu.com never saw that

@CodeX ssshhhh

thanks @edwinksl ;)

ah! I see now!

@AnwarShah better you put it in the open. Sometimes, I want to see how others react before I respond.

6:07 PM
OK joker
Jokerdino

@AnwarShah good
Retract your vote?

you wanted me to retract?
no, I haven't yet

No, I am asking if it should be retracted.

or can i ?

sorry, just a little dazed.
Not sure, use your discretion.

6:13 PM
I see I can't retract delete or undelete votes

no, talking about the close vote.

oh. I haven't voted
I was talking about undelete one
well, i think there was my vote. retracted

...yeah.

mods see everything

...no.

6:15 PM
you're guessing..?

No

so?
I have only 2 votes left for today!

I think it was @edwin and you

yeah i retracted mine

there's still 1

6:17 PM
the one who left the comment

so, mods don't see close voters...

roles eyes

not fair...

@AnwarShah that's a lot. I dont use 2 everyday.

I don't know how that happens! only realized when the message shown
Mine has no Desktop->Gnome->LockDown
@edwinksl can you check yours please?

6:26 PM
afternoon!

Always On AMOLED (Display some information at all times) - f-droid.org/app/com.tomer.alwayson

@AnwarShah i don't have gconf-editor installed

oh..wait
he said, gconf and i was checking dconf :(

easy mistake to make

why is he digging up such an old question?
Who is even using 10.04?!

6:28 PM
I really need to RTFM for gpg >_<

badge?

shrug

can be made a generic question imo
and cv to that one?

I didn't touch it.

6:34 PM
O.o
looks like an audit to me

oh man, tomorrow's off \o/

:D

@edwinksl like it?

technically, this is already tomorrow. I mean today.

6:38 PM
@jokerdino same here

@AnwarShah didn't know you folks were liberated on the same day

it's not liberation day though

@AnwarShah it really bothers me that uname -r is formatted correctly but the rest are craptastic

@AnwarShah well then, any holiday is liberation day for me

@edwinksl You're the editor of the month. I thought, you'd like it :)
@jokerdino same

6:40 PM
The only day I like in the week is holiday.

why's that?

Sleeeeep
and lots of time to be on Ask Ubuntu ;)

sweeeeet sleeeep

there were some other mods I think.
Like Bruno. He's no more a mod I saw!

Yep.
I don't know if I was a mod back when you were around.
I think no.

6:43 PM
no. I saw your election, but that time I wasn't active on the site

Hmm, tell me you voted

I remember participating on two Elections since then
@jokerdino yeah. voted of course

I wouldn't vote for me if there was election now.

I can guess it

:(
do they call it Liberation day or Independence day there?

6:46 PM
It's actually National Mourn Day

touching

but it's a bit more political :)
some like it, some don't

it's a nice gesture
and you won't have a problem of people spamming you Happy xyz day like what I am getting here.

nah
but as a holiday, i think everyone likes it

what about you?

6:51 PM
I like holiday :)

haha

political answer ;)

it's better to be politically correct, in these times

I am actually delaying to spend my last two votes :)
can't agree more

I think I am going to get some sleep and pretend to be patriotic in the morning.

6:54 PM
^this is everyone these days

Q: What is it about some answers that attract upvotes?

Android DevHere are the two top answers that I've written. They both have 8 upvotes. You'll notice they are relatively simple answers. http://askubuntu.com/a/812186/518562 http://askubuntu.com/a/793353/518562 Now here are two of my own Q&As that I spent quite a bit of time working on, and one has 1 upvo...

8:17 PM
@Seth Did the NSA break into the entire internet or something?
Or maybe their server is swapping.
Or maybe a main internet distribution site is down.

8:33 PM
Heh.
They just have too many ads and trackers.

Q: No Analogue Output on Pulse Audio Control (Ubuntu)

Mason FirmanI'm very new to Linux and I have decided to go with Ubuntu. So far, my experience has been smooth however I've installed Chromium and have had trouble outputting HTML5 video. After doing some research, I read a forum post that suggested that I should install Pulse Audio Control. I've done so and...

9:11 PM
@Seth Yeah, I know. You should see speedtest.net

huh??

@Seth 80% of the page is ads.

ohh, right. Use speedof.me.
it has ads, but they're not nearly as intrusive.

Good grief! I've earned 160 reputation today!
@Seth good to know.

Q: Why is a zombie waiting for its child?

tomasI'm digging through different sources, but can't find a good description of the anatomy of child reaping. This is a simple case of what I would like to understand. $ cat <( sleep 100 & wait ) & [1] 14247 $ ps ax -O pgid | grep $$ 12126 12126 S pts/17 00:00:00 bash 14248 12126 S pts/17 00:00:...

@AndroidDev GASP
@Serg too busy eating cake to realize

arch-chroot is a beautiful thing...

Question of the Day: Should I buy a TMO Note 4 refurbished for $184.99 or one that's new for $257.99?

@Zacharee1 yeah, i thought the same

9:44 PM
@Zanna that almost sounds like Scottish accent words :p
but with huge exaggeration
arch laddy

@Zacharee1 you have hand-held device shopping addiction, confirmed !!!!

chroot yeself oer thar
@Serg To switch to T-Mobile we need T-Mobile phones. I want to keep my Note and so does my mom
so we need to go to eBay
Now, back to my Excel spreadsheet

would it be bad cheating if I alias grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg to update-grub in Arch?

@Zanna um , at least on ubuntu there is already update-grub command , so it might be in conflict

DESCRIPTION
update-grub is a stub for running grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
to generate a grub2 config file.

9:49 PM
it's only in Ubuntu
that command does what update-grub does in all the other Linuxes afaik
thanks @CodeX

@Zanna ?
@Zacharee1 excel???

eh?

looks to me you pinged wrong person

I really should pic a more distinct avatar hahaha

oh yes, I meant thanks @IanC
sorry!

9:52 PM
np :)

people, that's what too much arch sorcery does to you

hahaha :) that's nice

DIR:/xieerqi|16:01|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ file $(which update-grub)
/usr/sbin/update-grub: POSIX shell script, ASCII text executable

DIR:/xieerqi|16:01|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ cat $(which update-grub)
#!/bin/sh
set -e
exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@"
@Zanna welp , you are correct

it was meant to be a joke, like, you can take the user out of ubuntu, but you can't take ubuntu out of the user
3

ubunut in serg's case

10:05 PM
Ubunut , the nuttiest of them all

I forgot what the $@ at the end means

awww I broke my wireless interface

does it expand to all the arguments?

@IanC yes, as strings.

thanks @Seth!

10:07 PM
@Serg @edwinksl ubunut could even be a title! In a good way.

a bit useless on this script though, since the only options for grub-mkconfig are -h for help and -v for version

user136984
Anyone got any ideas?

Q: Why is there a strange grey border on the top and right edge of my screen in GNOME?

Paranoid PandaI have recently noticed that there is a grey border the same colour as the GNOME login screen background which is about 1 or 2 pixels thick and goes on the top and right edge of my screen as can be seen in this screenshot (I edited it in GIMP so that all but the grey has been turned to white so y...

@IanC I'm not sure it means what you think it does anymore. $@ expands to all the arugments passed to a script (in this case Serg's script). It doesn't mean it expands to all the arguments grub-mkconfig offers.
err, in this case the update-grub script.

oh I broke something else... :(

10:10 PM
@IanC yes , that expands to a string of command line arguments. It is very useful when you want to preserve each argument , it's the same as "$1" , "$2" , "$3" and so on

@Seth yeah, I meant the arguments parsed to the script. Like update-grub something. But it will pass those arguments to grub-mkconfig, by appending it to the end of the script as a string
but since grub-mkconfig doesn't have any option besides -h and -v doesn't seem really necessary to have "$@" there

@IanC that is correct. I thought you might have meant it will expand to all of the possible grub-mkconfig arguments :)
TIL: $* will expand to all the arugments, but concatenated together in one string.

Here
DIR:/xieerqi|16:12|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ bash args_test.sh 'one two' three
one two three
one two
three

DIR:/xieerqi|16:12|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ cat args_test.sh
for item in "$*"
do
   echo "$item"
done

for item in "$@"
do
   echo "$item"
done

Hurrah! my Arch boots!

yeah, $* and $@ are different, $* will parse all arguments as only one argument
I mean, it was something like that, been a while I don't review bash script haha

10:14 PM
@IanC same as char **args[] in C

Has anyone ever seen type micro-A or mini-A?

@IanC by the way, where are you with that C book ? when do you want to start doing Ruby ?

@Serg I'm on lesson 30, still 20 and something to finish it

@Seth I have seen mini-a, but not micro a

since they are getting a little more complicated now it's taking me a bit more time to finish each lesson

10:17 PM
@Serg where?

@Seth uh . . .what do you mean "where" ? here is the US . . . cellphone charger

@Serg pretty sure that's micro-B

@Seth Mini A looks the same as Micro B

user136984
Well, goodnight everyone! :)

but the connectors are on the other side

user136984
10:25 PM
I wish they'd hurry up with releasing the updated kernel version with that patch! The 27th is just too far off!

@Zacharee1 they look similar, but if you look at the profiles below you will see how they are different.

@ParanoidPanda I'm surprised they even released the details before a patch was released

@Zacharee1 yup , the pins are in different positions
welp, i just dug through all my usb cables ( at least those i know where to find ) , and seems like all of the ones i have are micro -b

yeah
I never even knew Micro and Mini had A and B versions
I thought it was just Micro and Mini

me either.

10:56 PM

@Serg Make USB Great Again™
@NathanOsman I have a great relationship with the USBs. The USBs love me.
upvote before Pilot downvotes :p askubuntu.com/questions/812316/…

Welp , aside from all that , USB is one of the best protocols ever. We can has bunch of jump drives, USB keyboards, mouses, even fans and LED lights, coffee cup warmers , you name it
The world is cray-z about UBS

we can has?
@Serg that's why it's called Universal

@Serg USB teapot, anyone?

lol
what about a USB powered water boiler though?

Ha, I expected actual teapot for boiling water
@Zacharee1 eh, probably not likely. You can't boil on only 5 Volts of power . . . although with some amplification, maybe

I love that *nix devs actually put some humor in stuff

If you're lucky

@NathanOsman it probably means that kexec will be loading kernelz, in stead of grubz

So looks like I want to select "no" then.
I'm about to rebuild my kernel.
We're going to soon find out what 16 GB of RAM can do to help.

Q: LVM: /dev/mapper/vg-volume or /dev/vg/volume when mounting?

FallenWarriorRecently, when adding a new logical volume to my /etc/fstab, I noticed something odd: some of the volumes were referenced as /dev/mapper/vg-volume and others as /dev/vg/volume. Therefore, I decided to choose a common notation but I am unsure which one to use since both are currently in use and ...
