Smokey is here again.

@Seth must be a language thing, but still curious to the repz comment?

7:48 PM
Okay ;) everybody the link is a lie!

@JacobVlijm terdon's answer pretty much summed it up what I was going to say.

@ThomasW. That was fast... askubuntu.com/questions/791101/…

It must be american slang though if you are having trouble understanding it.
Or internet slang more likely.

@Seth What are you referring to?

@AndroidDev continuation of my reply to Jacob

7:57 PM
Anybody know what dd stands for? Data destroyer??

@AndroidDev Disk destroyer, data destroyer, disk dump, data dump, data duplicate, etc...

23
Q: What does dd stand for?

invertI know very well what the command does, but man dd, info dd tell me: 'Convert and copy a file', as does GNU Coreutils. Google says its an abbreviation of everything between medicine and bad webchat slang; except someone saying it means 'data destroyer', something used in PC forensics - I'd be ho...

@Seth To sum it up, nobody really knows it any more...

copy & convert :) just been named dd because cc was standing for c compiler :)
computer myths developing :D

8:12 PM
in light of why c is named c
i wouldn't be surprised by what you said

dd = data duplicator? :P
(just kidding, I don't really know)
wouldn't surprise me though

diskworld destroyer
bet @Rinzwind will hate me for that ;)

dd = dum dum

@edwinksl well was one of the answers in the question thread @Seth linked

oh seth linked something? i didn't see, let me check that out
it makes sense though
sort of, kind of, actually not really

8:17 PM
it is funny somehow that such information is lost, and i bet it is for many linux/unix commands lost

there are many many things.... many of which have been lost to Time and the dawn of the New Age of Computing.
:P

yes even if we should have known better already at that time ;)

@Videonauth I want him banned!

why is the icon for the save button in libreoffice still a floppy disk

@Rinzwind xD

8:20 PM
@edwinksl Because it's still a floppy disk in Word and other major word processors

we should modernize the icon

legacy icons will stick around for eternity

xD

they are the Immortal Artifacts of the computing world

@edwinksl let me guess, changing it to a pestilenzial hamburger?

8:21 PM
@Seth I see. Thanks for clearing that out.

hamburger is the correct answer to many things, including save icons

yawn good morning

@Videonauth no destroying my turtle or any of them elephants :=)

So... serious question. What is this "RELA" thing?

In USA Donald Trump Trumpets You

8:35 PM
Transcription factor p65 also known as nuclear factor NF-kappa-B p65 subunit is a protein that in humans is encoded by the RELA gene. RELA, also known as p65, is a REL-associated protein involved in NF-κB heterodimer formation, nuclear translocation and activation. NF-κB is an essential transcription factor complex involved in all types of cellular processes, including cellular metabolism, chemotaxis, etc. Phosphorylation and acetylation of RELA are crucial post-translational modifications required for NF-κB activation. RELA has also been shown to modulate immune responses, and activation of RELA...

Not quite. Posting question.

we are back in bio? >:)

@Rinzwind at least it is not /b/

Q: What are these memory strings? What do they do?

Kaz WolfeRecently, I dumped my memory strings (just because I could) using sudo cat /dev/mem | strings. Upon reviewing this dump, I noticed some very interesting things: .symtab .strtab .shstrtab .note.gnu.build-id .rela.text .rela.init.text .rela.text.unlikely .rela.exit.text .rela__ksymtab .rela__ksymt...

apparently rela = relocation

8:38 PM
RELA (ReLo c A tion)

If you have a source/explanation to what they do, post it as an answer!

i found something but i don't understand most of it

@KazWolfe what for each of the lines? not so what we expect from a question ;-)

yeah yeah, working on it.

The header file <elf.h> defines the format of ELF executable binary files. Amongst these files are normal executable files, relocatable object files, core files, and shared objects. An executable file using the ELF file format consists of an ELF header, followed by a program header table or a section header table, or both. The ELF header is always at offset zero of the file. The program header table and the section header table's offset in the file are defined in the ELF header. The two tables describe the rest of the particularities of the file. This header file describes the above mentioned headers as C structures and also includes structures for dynamic sections, relocation sections and symbol tables. The following types are used for N-bit architectures (N=32,64, ElfN stands for Elf32 or Elf64, uintN_t stands for uint32_t or uint64_t): El

@Rinzwind fixed. ^^

@KazWolfe lol there is 1 downvote on your qn

@edwinksl I know.

not me111!!

@KazWolfe Offered a +1 to fix that

8:43 PM
@Edity If there's a downvote, there's obviously a problem with the question. I'd rather know what's wrong with it so I can fix it, instead of keeping it at a zero or positive score.

@KazWolfe or there's something wrong with you >:P

>:P

@Zacharee1 I'm actually asking a legitimate question about a function of Linux seeking answers. There's no reason to question my sanity now.

idk
link?

@edwinksl well i as well only can guess around but a search for some of the strings mentioned made me end up on the page of the GNU binutils

8:44 PM

I got this message 2 years ago

well... I see one problem: it is not about Ubuntu. It is about the kernel.
I would have asked this on U+L

@Videonauth i ended up on the manpage for elf

@KazWolfe someone said Too Broad in CV

8:45 PM
@Zacharee1 I know. I can see CVs.

yep and elf is part of the gnu binutils

@Rinzwind Should I nominate it for migration?

readelf - Displays information from any ELF format object file.

seems like you are more likely to get the correct eyeballs on your question in U&L

8:47 PM
I would yes :)

guess so too

oh and just nuke this one after opening a new one on U+L

I just flagged it for migration because I'm lazy

NOOOO
WHY WINDOWS WHY\

9:03 PM
I am done with Windows.

@edwinksl Im actuall reading onto some kind of python tutorial, and came across that line : evens = [2*i for i in range(10**100)] which should throw a MemoryError, but instead it simply clogged up my laptop so i had to do a mean hard reboot, any ideas why ?
I mean why it should throw an error is clear

hmm

hmm not sure, i never really stress-tested my python like intentionally make a huge list ;)
docs.python.org/2/library/… seems to suggest the exception is raised but "the interpreter may not always be able to completely recover from this situation"
i am assuming you are using python 2?

py3

ilak xunli D:

9:11 PM
very nice :D

it didtn even come to print out the error message :))

@slkniwde problem is what?

in fact its a silly tutorial app i downloaded from google app store, but it gave me a quicker overview

oh well
the solution to your problem is downloadmoreram.com

just wondered about this one
ow, well this reallly might solve it ;)

9:14 PM
10**100 is a pretty large number, you gotta have to do some serious downloading

10**100 == 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000‌000000000000000000000
my guess is that it simply does not check the amount of ram before but rather rpints out the error if it runs into trouble, but then it might even be to late already, thats a serious flaw in the interpreter :)

yeah it does seem odd because you would imagine that the interpreter already has enough info to determine there isn't enough ram to do what you told it to do

^ what he says ;)
i have to give python one thing to print out or calculate such big numbers i would have to get pretty creative in c++

Banned- your account has been banned

to say it in 4chan words, the pool is closed ;)

9:26 PM

@KazWolfe im pretty much aware of the basic story ;) thank you

@Zacharee1 mhmm looks interesting even if i not scrolled down to the plot
