anyone of you caracks know whats causing a virtualbox kernel modules are not running problem on a host machine?
i get this notification all the time i boot up my main machine, but not on my laptop

@Videonauth do you have dkms installed ?

virtualbox-dkms:
  Installed: 5.0.18-dfsg-2build1
  Candidate: 5.0.18-dfsg-2build1
  Version table:

        500 archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/multiverse i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

@jokerdino please tell me when finished the merge. :)

is that what causes this ?

no ... I mean the dkms package ->
cl@cl-UW-1:~$ apt policy dkms
dkms:
Installed: 2.2.0.3-2ubuntu11

@Pandya Thank you sir

Hi @LuisAlvarado ! :)

BTW anybody know of how I can set the askubuntu chat to show on my desktop without me having google chrome or firefox opened? is there an app?

@LuisAlvarado as far as I know not ... :)

Thank you @cl-netbox

4:16 PM
@LuisAlvarado You're welcome ! :) ... what you can do is create a .desktop file ... but this launches a browser instance as well ... :)

@LuisAlvarado gratz on 100k ;)

Hi @Rinzwind ... or should I say... MY NEMESIS!

:+)
you better catch fossy. he's easy to pass :=)

@LuisAlvarado 100.000 points ? wow ... congrats from me as well ! :) great job ! Are you hunting our friend @Rinzwind ? :D :D :D

@cl-netbox nah he lost the challenge ;-)

4:19 PM
@Rinzwind hahaha ... and if he comes close you give it all you've got to pass @Oli ... that's for sure ! :D

cant catch oli. he makes on average more than anyone

@Rinzwind no problem ... you can be proud of what you already achieved ... so many great answers and so many points ! :)

I delete a lot so all the bad ones are gone >:-)

@Videonauth this problem is most probably dynamic kernel module support related ... sometimes a reinstall of dkms related packages and reboot of host helps. :)

uh oh reinstalling ubuntu ?

4:27 PM
I have been almost dead for the past 2 years establishing in Costa Rica, but I am know settling, so should be more active like before (cleaning site, tickets, etc..)

i just installed yesterday

@Videonauth no ... dkms related packages

ok lets see :)
didn't help still getting the notify Virtualbox Client: ...

@LuisAlvarado great to have you back!

4:44 PM
@Videonauth which version of vbox do you use ?

5.0.18
installed from the ubuntu repos
i guess
not any ppa version
i just wonder where i can find any logfile about this

@LuisAlvarado o_O

@Videonauth please try this -> askubuntu.com/questions/744994/… - replace vivid with xenial - download ext-pack from vbox website -> download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.20/… and insert it manually -> askubuntu.com/questions/718446/… :) then you can always use the latest vbox version and this works properly ! :)

ok sounds like a plan i just going on and purge it then doing a reboot and do the rest
there are enough errors i have to investigate in my syslog tho
^^

@Videonauth I have tested everything on different machines and ubuntu editions, it really works great without any problems ... just follow exactly the instructions. :)

4:53 PM
rebooting brb
back

They have a section that says Narshmalow

submit --> NARF

heh
I said Netflix as a joke

i did the key step before tho

Is there a way to bypass the key verification?

5:02 PM
there might be but i just did the wget command without the sudo apt-key add - and the key looks ok

@Videonauth can you install it nevertheless ?

yes sure i can install a package without verification but i will get this error message every time i run apt-get update

@Videonauth this is no problem ... same with Google Chrome -> askubuntu.com/questions/724093/… ... please read at the bottom ... just ignore this error ... :)

yeah there are more problems to it if i try to install for example the virtualbox.gues.additions-iso it will remove virtualbox-5.0 and install the ubuntu version again :p
or at least it would if i press y
i wonder if the key has changed maybe ?

@Videonauth do NOT install that iso - download it as I described ...

5:15 PM
yeah just dl it from oracle website
and the extension pack aswell

@Videonauth no do NOT download the main vbox from ORACLE - when you added the repo it should be offered version 5.0.20 - download only the ext-pack

yeah i did but downloaded the extension pack and the iso for guest
installes the ext pack through virtualbox itself

@Videonauth you only need the ext-pack ... please insert the ext-pack as I described in my answer

did
so i not need to install the iso anymore in the guest system ?

@Videonauth no ... please read this -> virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

5:23 PM
the key has changed
wget -q -O - virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc | sudo apt-key add -
you can add this to your answer

@Videonauth : The only thing that is described wrong on this site is the sources.list ... it has to be sources.list.d/oracle-vbox.list

this is for debian8 and 16.04

@Videonauth no - what I wrote was valid for the versions as of time answering the question ... for xenial answers this is correct. :)

now im not getting that error anymore about no key :)
did you see that i added a line in your answer ?

@Videonauth no ... where ?

5:28 PM
6
A: Not able to install Virtual box in Ubuntu

cl-netboxAlthough Ubuntu 15.04 is not supported anymore, you can install VirtualBox this way : First completely remove all traces from the previous VirtualBox installation attempts. sudo apt-get purge "^virtualbox-.*" Download and register the ORACLE public key. wget -q -O - https://www.virtua...

@Videonauth nice ! :)

i think i makes sense or you will see alot questions comming up i followed ...xxx and i get error

@Videonauth maybe I check all my old vbox answers and change it ... :)
@Videonauth thanks for your edit ... but you forgot something maybe ? what about adding upvotes when the answers were useful for you ? :D

@Videonauth nice ! :) thanks ! :)

5:33 PM
well i only changed the line in your first answer the second one you might have to update yourself :)
speaking of this askubuntu.com/a/719378/522934 one

@Videonauth just checked ... I made some 15 answers where I have to change it ... :)

wow ok :p
so now going to check on the other errors in my syslog
want it to run as smoothly as possible

@Videonauth okay ... I have to go now and do some maintenance jobs on my wife's ubuntu ... see you tomorrow ... hope your vbox problem is solved now ... was a pleasure talking with you ! :)

only good thing is i have run in many troubles on my laptop already
yeas its solved just did a restart and no annoying messages

@Videonauth that really makes me happy ! :)

5:40 PM
shouldnt the lines for virtualbox not be in a seperate file ?

@Videonauth which lines ?

in sources.list

@Videonauth remove the line ! chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/29791120#29791120 ... echo "deb download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian * contrib" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/oracle-vbox.list

@Videonauth all external repos have to be in sources.list.d folder as a separate file ... sources.list is for ubuntu only

5:44 PM
okies

@Videonauth goodbye :) have a nice evening ! :)

@cl-netbox you too and thank you

6:23 PM
@Videonauth You would just have to post a single message every two weeks to keep it alive...

yep :)

I had such a room myself for a while, but one time I forgot to keep it warm and I never missed it either though... ;)

im only not sure if keeping a resource not used is a valid behavior

Nah, nobody cares.
You're not disturbing anybody with that room.

@Videonauth a mod can overrule that restriction for you, just ask :)

6:26 PM
ok next time i know that :)

@Seth Can a mod block a mod?

not really.

Could anybody help me with installing my Android-x86 VM? That question only got 5 views since yesterday, and two of them are from myself... unix.stackexchange.com/q/284241/103151

view+1

:D
but what about answer+1?

user139252
6:32 PM
\o

@ByteCommander only netbox ever talks about kvm

user139252
I've not really used KVM, sorry @ByteCommander

I spoke to him already. He helped me getting UEFI support in general (works with Ubuntu VM), but not for the Android-x86 one...

6:45 PM
Why do some questions get upvoted a lot but has no answers?

maybe because people have the same problem and or the question is good and clear

Is the if you do something good for me then I will do something good for you thing allow?

in which context ?

I just feel like asking questions.
Like @Videonauth example vote one of my question and I will vote one of yours questions is that allow can I get block for doing?
I miss paranoid panda.

this is heavily frowned upon as well as serial upvoting

6:52 PM
Okay so it is not allowed.

you should only up-vote something which is in case of a question, very clear to read and clear whats asked , and in case of an answer if it was helpful and throughout

I know that you don't need to echo.
LOL

but i had to say that otherwise @jokerdino hits me on the head with something unpleasantly heavy

:)

6:55 PM
How is your eyes doing?

still hurting a bit and tearing all day long but beside that fine

that's like 'apart from all the bad things, I am doing good'.

yes indeed
installed 16.04 on my main machine yesterday and getting settled slowly
squashing errors

it reminded me of that when you said that.

7:00 PM
JDino I got my deputy bage need to tell a mod. :)

ah good. keep up the good work

So many spams

spam spam spam spam spam ....
most annoyingly its itchy all time long and I'm not allowed to rub on it (my eye i mean)

7:38 PM
@Seth You got a little brother!
:D

I've always wanted a little brother.

can someone tell me why a 4 GB iso file doesnt fit on a 16 GB USB stick ???

@Videonauth FAT!

mhmm this might be it

What can cause this one?
sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
I have nothing running.

7:50 PM
@Videonauth Format the stick as ext4 or NTFS or split the iso up into two files.

I cannot even start Software updater. I had R running but now it should be closed.
It has been now so 12 hours.

@Masi Probably the updater is still running. Run pgrep -a apt and pgrep -a update, that should show you most of the processes that could use it...

They do not help.
masi@masi:~$ sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
masi@masi:~$ sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
masi@masi:~$
masi@masi:~$ sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

No!
Of course not. It's a different lockfile.

pgrep -a apt
14963 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/sbin/aptd
15150 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/sbin/aptd
masi@masi:~$ pgrep -a update
3395 update-notifier
@ByteCommander Sorry, I did it. Can something be broken?

7:53 PM
Also, deleting the lock file is strongly discouraged, because it will mess up stuff is there's really a different process running.

@ByteCommander What to do now?
Why is there such a thread first in Google?

Can you do a reboot? That should be the simplest and most graceful way to terminate the background processes...
Else a killall update-notifier should be okay as well.

@ByteCommander Yes, it accepted it.

But check the two pgreps again before.

@ByteCommander The problem came from upstart and runit: unix.stackexchange.com/q/284249/16920
@ByteCommander The bug/thing there caused the system the lock.

7:56 PM
And I don't understand why you were so surprised about me saying that you should not delete lock files. Read the first sentence of the answer you linked:
> This should be used as last resort. If you use this carelessly you can end up with a broken system. Please try the other answers before doing this.

Such a stub answer should not be an accepted answer and highly voted.
Warnings do not work. You need to argumentate why.
Such a bolding only distracts.

Ts...
Also, please rollback your edit to your question on U&L.
This has nothing to do with each other!

in British accent Someone delete a lockfile?

Q: Which script is responsible for mounting an HGFS share on an Ubuntu 16.04 guest running on a Windows host in VMWare Workstation 12?

Aaron Allen FulkersonI'm trying to change the permissions of the mount so that the owner of all files/folders in the shared folder residing on the Windows host doesn't default to root. I've found this http://www.zendbox.de/2015/10/10/how-to-change-the-owner-on-a-shared-hgfs-folder/ but I figure there has to be a bett...

@ByteCommander Ok. Done. I just know that the thing started the problem.

7:59 PM
update-notifier launches automatically in background, this is normal behaviour. That you tried to run an apt command just in the same time is an unlucky coincidence.

Close duplicate question with almost the same title: askubuntu.com/q/775317/367990
@NathanOsman Who/what is Robin?

The bird.
The American robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the Old World flycatcher family. The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast. It is the state bird of Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin. According to some sources, the American robin ranks behind only the red-winged blackbird (and just ahead of the...

Oh! I did not know that a Robin is actually a bird breed... Thought it was only a name.

8:05 PM
mhmmmmmm

@terdon Do you have any idea about this unix.stackexchange.com/q/284249/16920 ? Should I run JdeBP's proposal. It is the only obstruction now with the other thread.
@ByteCommander I keep getting the lock after the reboot. Do you know how to proceed?

18 mins ago, by Byte Commander
Else a killall update-notifier should be okay as well.
After that, check the two pgrep commands I gave you again.

@ByteCommander No does not help.

askubuntu.com/review/late-answers/567390 great this test system keeps keelhauling me over
-.-

@Masi Check the pgreps and post them.

good morning :D

@Seth can you have a look at that, i did read the answer and it looked for me legit, i not read the comments below it

@Masi Well, but this has nothing to do with the locks any more.

@ByteCommander Yes, but back to the original problem.

Yes. But I can't help you with that specific one. You should probably try what the answer proposes...

8:19 PM
I do not really understand the main idea.
It is just a beginning, and not complete.

What is going on here?

@Masi You run Ubuntu 16.04 which has both upstart and systemd as (whatever the proper name for that is, but they're responsible for managing services and the boot process somehow) installed.

@ByteCommander Can I delete either one? I should work.

As the answer describes, the runit package tries to find out which (whatever) your system is using, but probably gets confused because two are installed and it picks the wrong one.

(aka Yakkety Yak)

8:22 PM
Nope, I don't think you can uninstall one.

Any idea for the complete resolution. It seems to be a bug.

But not 100% sure... (?)

post it in launchpad

If it's a bug, file a bug report.

I'm mad.

8:36 PM
@anyofthemods could someone remove the dreadfully ugly threads of comments here: askubuntu.com/questions/775025/… about everything that is useful (or not) is said and done. @jokerdino ?
...Sorry I also took part in it...

@Edity your silence is imperative at the moment...

o

Okay I lie, just joking, whats up?

8:40 PM
the plane

MS keeps sneaking in optional updates that try to install the Windows 10 upgrade app

@Zacharee1 im happily now a fulltime linux user and not seeing those sneaky updates anymore :D

@Edity that is a good place for it...as opposed to the side of a mountain range...

lol

@Masi Nice. Now you have to wait for reactions. I can'T do anything about that.

8:41 PM
i am watching LoL esports

@Zacharee1 just do it..you will only regret it.

Win 10 might be nice for the standard dummy-user, but it's horrible to administrate IMHO... :-/

yep

@ByteCommander I like it a lot better then Windows 8.x

4 min rule- don't ping me

8:44 PM
@Edity what is the 4 min rule?

not to ping me...

@Edity that is not a rule, that is just demanding people not to ping you...

lol

@Edity but I am not one who answers demands lightly...

ok its annoying

8:46 PM
@Edity what? getting pinged?

@Edity probably the only way to escape this is to leave the room or turn your speakers off! :D :D

constantly ping

Or I leave. It's late... See you! o/

:c

@Edity well that is the price of playing here...

8:46 PM
bye

@ByteCommander well good bye then.

(and don't take that little joking seriously ;) )

@Edity does disabling desktop notifications kill the pings?

spam-ping me!

@Edity haven't I already been?

8:48 PM
lol you have been

@Edity and you can't really spam, there is only so many messages that you can send in a certain time frame.

@TheXed

@Edity however I don't really remember what it is.

@TheXed
lol

@Edity?

@TheXed?

Stop pinging.

@TheXed

@Edity?

I got a ban twice.

its 10 second ban noodle

It's true...and it is funny...if it isn't you...
@Edity no, they can ban you indefinitely...

I ate 10 second ban noodles only once.
it tastes "banny"

The mods can delete your account also.

8:58 PM
@Edity lol, go make yourself useful and go answer some questions or something...

O_O
I don't post questions or answers

Or flag
or edit

cuz mods can use my post to make themselves useful

@HenryWhiteHatHacker I think I would literally cry if my account got deleted.... 6 years of hard work...

Bow down it's Henry!

8:59 PM
@Edity then what do you do here...besides ping me?
