@Edity People that think you're a bot. I was kidding. Sort of a joke

@hbdgaf Look at my profile info.

I saw that. It's what makes it a joke. I checked.

4:06 AM
I see those eggs as black.
And the nest as bright-white.
;( i never got to experience colors

I've never heard of that sort of color blindness other than in CV. Red/green color blind I've encountered.

Yup
me neither
But i see your profile picture as green..

They are a turquoise blue if that helps.

Thanks

@NathanOsman cool!

4:09 AM
I am really color blind ;(

I'm thinking of setting up a Pi there.

?

To watch the nest. The mother returned shortly after I took that picture.

at least im eating my white toffee

Q: Crouton/linux problem

user170892I've installed Ubuntu on my chrombook using crouton, so I can switch between OS's. However, the screen keeps flickering to chrome OS when I'm using Ubuntu. Does anybody know how this could be fixed? I saw somebody else on the blog who had the same problem so some help would really be appreciated!

yup @Videonauth

nah Edity

?

that was meant for jokerdinos question

4:14 AM
o

ok

you can feel lucky, imagine you see all normal and then it changes around, this would make you crazy
so at least the world around you is constant

4:16 AM

Imma snooze some more.
zzZZZ..

man, 16.04 is really slow compared to 15.10.
Anyone else experiencing that?

it's raining in the middle of the summer. Huzzah

i had no proper time to measure 15.10 tbh i upgraded after two weeks

I see everyones profile picture as Smudged

4:28 AM
@jokerdino that's always fun -.-

or blurred

@Seth Anything's better than scorching heat.

@jokerdino I suppose that's true. I've never been in a place that gets as hot as your area.
I've been to a place that was 43 degrees all week, but it was in the desert so no humidity.

16.04 Yakkety Yak XD XD XD

yeah, dry heat is still relatively better than humid conditions.

4:30 AM
@Seth I haven't switched over, but I'm not on mainline either... so it wouldn't be of any help to you. Did they switch over to Wayland on 16.04 mainline? If so, that could be part of it. Compositing not quite sending the right things to the GPU and sending too much to CPU

brb - breakfast

@hbdgaf I don't think so. The Ubuntu plan is to keep X until xmir is ready iirc.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? - BREAKFAST

afaik only Kubuntu uses wayland atm.

@Edity I'm a fan of secondbreakfast. Did that the other day.

4:31 AM
lol
Ok - goodnight!

@hbdgaf but now that you mention it I do think there has been an increase in CPU activity.
I wonder if the upgrade messed up my intel drivers..

@seth systemd-analyze blame

That's possible. It might be offloading some compositing to the CPU if it knows the intel driver isn't very good at it and expect that if you're running intel gpu, you chose a faster cpu.

4:36 AM
@Seth eh, is your HD getting near full?

mhmm looks normal

@hbdgaf I don't believe so, but let me check.
@Edity goodnight.

idk what normal blame value looks like for disk access. it's just at the top, and I know when my disk gets over 85%, i get noticeable slowdown.
If I haven't posted it already, this is pretty neat

ugh. the intel graphics installer hasn't been updated for 16.04.

o yeah my pc is still on only ping me for something
or i get super-angry.

4:45 AM
grr, I might have to reinstall. I can't even get the disk usage analyzer to work now.
I really don't want to have to do that again..

df doesn't work?? wait what?
also, i need to back some stuff up and clean out this install badly...

5 hours
I have a passage analysis tomorrow in class
And I can't sleep

poor zach. I can't go to sleep either

I'm telling you, 3 more hours/2 hours before you're going to get tired. It's psychological. When you dread something, you don't get tired. Then avoidance kicks in about 2 hours before.

although I can sleep whenever i want to

4:54 AM
@hbdgaf I'm not dreading anything though. I just don't feel tired at all

D: my eyes hurt

And I can't do a passage analysis on two hours of sleep

is passage analysis something like prose comprehension?

I think that's what it is. Analyze a passage from something and write about how the author uses certain words, phrases, etc to convey messages

lol we call it written commentary.

4:57 AM
i call it COLOR BLINDNESs
lel

we write a load of crap about imagery, similes, metaphors, symbols and whatever literary terms that comes to mind.

Yeah, except my teacher does her best to actually grade.

when i did pe i got a f+

O_o

because im god damn COLOR BLIND

4:59 AM
@jokerdino I wrote one of those about how Animal Farm could actually be construed as a greenpeace piece. My English teacher - "I think you were REALLY reaching on that one, but you supported your argument so well... I had to give it a pass even though it was a stretch."

@Edity, OK enough of it now.

ok then

@hbdgaf lol my work is always lacking substantiating evidence.

@jokerdino did you speak to that user?

no, I generally don't do that.

Their comment is gone. You didn't do anything?

but maybe one of us will tell them something.

@jokerdino I only support with evidence for literature classes. For comp-sci it's mostly, "but did it work?"

@Zacharee1 Seth did

Ah

5:02 AM
0:21 how neat is that? thats pretty neat! XD XD XD

Ded?

O_o 0:21 021 take out the 0 21 thats how old i am DUN DUN DUN

blade19899I have multiple Linux CentOS servers that are scanned with the Google Webmaster Tools and when it finds some malicious code on my servers (shared/dedicated), the ranking of those site drops. Anybody got knowledge of DNS
I have a server which can't ping a hostname, but can ping an IP adres?
I added the Google DNS in /etc/resolv.conf, but that's a temporarily fix. Anybody got any ideas

10:58 AM
@blade19899 If using the google DNS fixes it, you have the wrong DNS server set up in your router or wherever you're setting it up.

Q: Another "why was my answer deleted" looking for advice to be better

JoolsI am new to posting questions and answers on SE, although not new to using the various SE resources. I also get the need for questions and answers to be concise and accurate, we all need answers and quickly. But purely to give me some direction for future answers what specifically was the reason...

@Videonauth I am trying to backup my systems with Systemback of Persistent Live Ubuntu here askubuntu.com/q/774138/25388

11:34 AM
@terdon It's not a router; Its a production server.

@blade19899 OK, then the DNS you have in resolv.conf isn't working. Either the DNS service is down, nor the server is unreachable or something. If changing DNS servers fixes your problem, you know that the problem is with the DNS you are using.

12:01 PM
@Videonauth Firefox problem is persistent itself. It occurs always after restart in the persistent live Ubuntu.

12:18 PM
@Masi did you manage to sort out the encryption issue?

@terdon New lead, apparently the ipv6 on the server is broke... :/ Any ideas on that

@blade19899 No. I know next to nothing about networking. I also have no idea what server this is. The DNS server? The machine using the DNS server? Why don't you post a question?

@terdon There are a bunch of post about Au and the interwebs in general, but nothing seems to work :/

@blade19899 OK, ask a question then :) That's how it works!

@terdon 11 days without my main system. It feels so long time. My other HDs are in so bad shape that I have not wanted work further other projects. I am trying to copy-system here askubuntu.com/q/774138/25388 such that I will have copies of my systems for the future such that no such failure happens again.

Q: IPV6 suddenly stopt working?

blade19899I have no idea, but right now I have two Linux servers(CentOS 7.2.1511 (Core)) that are identical, but on one the server stopped connection to ipv6. The following output is the same for both servers X and Y dmesg | grep IPv6 [ 4.330627] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not read...

2:22 PM
@Masi Damn... I still don't understand what happened. The original issue was very minor.

@terdon Yes, I know. But it is good to learn from it. Backups/clones of HDs are essential. I have cheated myself and not taken them responsibly so it is good time to learn to do it.

Yes, they are...
I also really don't see any point in whole disk encryption.

Yes, it is another thing that I learned. So I do not do it anymore. Just home-folder encryption. But still, they say that I should not store backups encrypted. I do not understand yet why.
Not even home folder.

Anybody can help me with IPV6 issue ^

@Masi because encryption implementation is as it is tricky and fragile piece of code, and if the code changes only so sligthly there is a possibility your encrypted backups are lost. that is the main reason for not making the backups encrypted

2:28 PM
@Videonauth Is it possible to make backups unencrypted from encrypted home folder?

yes by logging in as the user which home folder you want to backup

I am searching some backup tool, now studying systemback, but have not understood the situation.
Good!

log in as the user and use tar -xf backup.tar.xz /home/<user.name>

@Videonauth I want to do system backup + home.
Of the system state. Such that, I can restore the system, just by putting in the HD.

system backup you make normal way and then store the tarball for the homes

2:31 PM
What is the normal way?
Use Live USB, then ,...

yep then deja-dup for the whole rest of the system and then a tarball for the users home
two files
at least thats the way i would do it
especially because the system doesnt change to much over time and can be fixed with an upgrade, and home user folders need more often a backup
because thats where the relevant data is in most cases (exceot mysql db)
god im so nervous right now
45 minutes till my eye surgery

What kind of surgery?

eye surgery

Which?

oh i will but with an eyepatch over my dominant eye
cant read really much with my left one

Yes, it will be necessary for protection, some time.
Antibiotics may be needed if you get too much discharge. You can ask them in advance so you do not need to go back get them.

Hello everyone :D
does anyone know how to add default entries in zenity forms??
zenity --entry=username --entry-text=severus works fine but zenity --forms --add-entry=username --entry-text=severus wont work :(. It is showing --entry-text is not supported for this dialog. Does anyone know the proper syntax ??

any way I can install Kubuntu on my 3rd partition without having it overwrite the bootloader from my primary partition?

@Seth Tell it to either i) not install a bootloader or ii) install it somewhere else.

@terdon I can't seem to tell it not to install one, but I can tell it to install grub on the flashdrive. Would that do?

What do you care if it does overwrite it though? Your Kubuntu GRUB will be identical to your Ubuntu one. I guess they might change the themes but even if they do, just boot back into your original and run grub-install again.
@Seth Sure or on another partition or whatever. More to the point see above. What do you care whose bootloader you have?

@terdon aha! I didn't realize grub-install was a thing. alright, maybe I'll just roll with that. It's just a pain since it gets overwritten every kernel upgrade.

@Seth ???

4:07 PM
@terdon because I have a custom configuration on my main install that I'd like to keep.
@terdon nvm, I'm confusing two different things there.
and I don't like the kubuntu theme :P

Why would it be overwritten? But anyway, yes, you can go back to your main install and run sudo grub-install /dev/sda or whatever.
Or update-grub first to get the new system as well. I'm sure I have an answer with this somewhere.
2
A: Update GNU GRUB

terdonBoot into either Ubuntu and run sudo update-grub That should generate a new grub config file with your newly installed OS. It should appear next time you reboot. If it doesn't, run this as well: sudo grub-install /dev/sda That will install grub in the MBR of your first hard drive. Change...

update-grub doesn't work. I tried that last time.
hmm, should I try btrfs?

'yo Byte
well I did it. I went with btrfs.
I have no idea what I'm doing xD

I never used btrfs. What should it be good for, compared to ext4?

4:13 PM
no idea.
I've heard a few things, but I cannot recall them off the top of my head.

@Seth Huh? it might be update-grub2 nor something or grub-update. In any case, you can do it manually, it just runs grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub.cfg and grub-install /dev/sda

@terdon weird.. it didn't work last time.

But it did this time?

same theme from the other install, didn't pick up my configuration..
@terdon haven't gotten that far yet, still installing :P

@Seth Perhaps you were sharing the /boot partition? I guess you could always change the theme manually. Or just tell it to install grub to the USB as you said and be done with it

4:18 PM
@terdon I don't.. think so?
but I will try this stuff out again later today.

Oh oh... Sharing /boot is a bad idea, as I had to learn with Ubuntu+Arch recently...

lol, that makes sense

@ByteCommander :)

Does anybody know if I can set 16.04 up to open the Dash's application lens instead of the home lens as default when clicking on it, as well as with 4-finger-touchpad-tapping?

@Seth Hi , what happens when I put a bounty on some others question and if I dont get any answers at all ??

4:31 PM
@SeverusTux nothing happens

I still loose my points right??

yes.
that's the whole point of a bounty ;)
brb rebooting

hm...

which question?

Q: In zenity forms, how can I set default values (initialize) entries?

Leslie TurriffI've got a zenity form working, but I can't find any information on initializing the entries. The Zenity help manual webpage doesn't address the issue. For example, the example from that webpage is #!/bin/sh zenity --forms --title="Add Friend" \ --text="Enter information about your friend." \ ...

4:34 PM
hmm nope

so.., is there any other way?? other than zenity?? similar tools??

@SeverusTux check out yad
it's a newer alternative to zenity.

but its not default in Ubuntu :( , OP will have to install yad to run my script

yep.

@SeverusTux alternatively, don't populate the fields, populate the variables instead. Something like this (using the example from the SO question you linked to):
#!/bin/sh

## Default values
default="John,Doe,jdoe@mail.com,05/14/2016"

zenity --forms --title="Add Friend" \
--text="Enter information about your friend." \
--separator="," \
    --add-entry="First Name" \
    --add-entry="Family Name" \
    --add-entry="Email" \
    --add-calendar="Birthday" >> addr.csv

case $? in
    0)
        echo "Friend added.";;
    1)
        echo "No friend added, using default values: $default"
				echo "$default" >> addr.csv
    ;;
    -1)
        echo "An unexpected error has occurred."
The user won't see the values but you could change that with something like this:
zenity --forms --title="Add Friend" \
--text="Enter information about your friend." \
--separator="," \
    --add-entry="First Name (def: John)" \
    --add-entry="Family Name (def: Doe)" \
    --add-entry="Email (def: jdoe@mail.com)" \
    --add-calendar="Birthday (def: 05/14/2016)" >> addr.csv

Gloop, another "I want it exactly like it was in windows, but I don't want windows" -case. Am I too grumpy? askubuntu.com/questions/774320/…

6:44 PM
@JacobVlijm All is well. He took the first step by switching over to Ubuntu.

@jokerdino Haha, sure, I'll remove the comments.

@JacobVlijm why is that a bad idea?? could you please explain??

@SeverusTux Sure, I was writing a comment to explain, but I will contimue here :)
@SeverusTux In the Unity Launcher, an application should only be represented by one icon (.desktop file). This should always be the same, and it should be the application's own launcher, with the correct keywords set and all. If you create multiple .desktop files, calling the application in their main command (first Exec= line)
, not only its appearance in the Launcher might get corrupted (new windows of the same app will also appear under the home-made icon), but keywords might be incorrect. Unclean practice.

@JacobVlijm okay. but why is this not happening every time?? why cant I reproduce it ??
I ment, see this : askubuntu.com/questions/739400/… , remember this convo?? why is it not happening in mine and OP's computer?

@SeverusTux I bet you can, create a simple launcher, calling a folder in nautilus, or a terminal with options. Run it and then run the main application.

7:00 PM
@JacobVlijm , ahh... I got it, I agree

@SeverusTux The thing is, it is unpredictable, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. On earlier Ubuntu versions, it practically went always wrong, but I guess Unity got smarter :)

@JacobVlijm , this is what bugs me. Randomness is humans thing, Computers cant do random

Hello.
@SeverusTux depends how you define random...
If we limit ourselves to Newtonian physics, the concept of "random" doesn't exist.

@NathanOsman Hello :) , I ment computers can only do pseudo random things, even for generating GPG keys, it asks the user to do random things.

@JacobVlijm that isn't so amazing :p

7:12 PM
@Zacharee why not?

It's amazing if you are able to predict it
But it's something that happens a lot that we just don't think about ever
So I guess it could be pretty amazing to think of, but I personally don't find the concept too exciting :p

Only time makes the difference between infinitely small and 1

@hbdgaf Aha! It says "see you space cowboy" :D
@JacobVlijm ?

@Zacharee1 forget it :)

sigh
Ever have it when you're booting your Android phone and suddenly the boot animation spazzes out? :p
