10:00 PM
@hbdgaf I think this is a good question: askubuntu.com/questions/433924/… and I am sorry to see that someone has voted to put it on hold.

@karel that vote isn't me, but as long as it gets the requisite votes to keep it from being auto-deleted -- it's still useful even if it is deleted/on-hold

@karel I agree actually, the question will still be useful once 14.04 hits.

yeah, more about what is going to be in the release, and how launchpad works when they delete stuff

@searchfgold6789 It will be useful if it is still here a month from now.

i skip the step in question in the use case for that question by disabling username/password login and just using pre-shared keys. it's a valid-ish question, but i am on the fence about it. the question and answer both have enough votes to stem off auto-deletion though, so not that big a deal. the close reason might change or it might get re-opened. either way, the flagpost is set.
think, unsupported changes to bug. still closed. still has votes. still is useful and not auto-deleted. no problems. why fight with it. the system is working its magic.

Does unity use QT? Not GTK?

@terdon has(unity 2d), dosn't, but will be.

@Mateo strange. Theoretically, the global menu thing comes via a package called appmenu-gtk but on my 13.10 I only have appmenu-qt and -qt5

11:07 PM
appmenu is the bane of crossplatform compat

@hbdgaf ;)

also, unity is written in qt. it's like, we're using gnome desktop but dev-ing on Qt, so it's quite antithetical.

@Mateo is it? Had no idea
I am just wondering why the hell this works. It does, but why?

A: Need full menus in gvim

terdonA dirty hack: sudo -u memilanuk gvim That will run with sudo, bypassing the global app menu but as your user, so you still have easy access to all your files, no permissions issues etc. To make this simpler, set up passwordless sudo for this command: Run sudo visudo, which will allow you t...

@hbdgaf I thought they made a switch somewhere in there... or was that just the qml stuff

unity is still Qt. It's a better decision in either case, I just think if you're deving on Qt you should choose KDE. It's like saying I want meat and potatoes, but i want to cook only with vegetables. It just doesn't make any sense at all.

11:13 PM
And there is something in Unity that does make sense?
Sorry, my prejudices are shining through
Would you have any idea how to disable the global menu thing for a specific app? My answer above is a horrible hack, there must be a more elegant way of doing it.
One that does not require me to start with an empty ENV (env -i) by preference

@terdon unified experience across devices. so unity on a handheld makes sense. it makes me feel like i'm a four year old on a desktop though. i just use something else because i don't need to be trained to use an OS.

@hbdgaf I like it on my notebook, but yeah I switch to xubuntu/kubuntu on a desktop

@hbdgaf argh! I hate that. Everyone is on this bloody handheld bandwagon. I want an OS that is designed for my hardware class. I don't want a desktop OS on a handheld and I don't want a phone's OS on my PC.
Windows8, Gnome3 and Unity all doing the same crap.

@terdon I agree, but everyone that buys stuff is clinically retarded.

@terdon well, they are just starting ;) so there are going to be wth moments

11:17 PM
Yeah (he says, and hides his iPad behind his back)

my hardware list: old hpdv7 that is missing keys, asus touchscreen laptop from walmart in the 400 range on clearance, raspi, android pre-pay, raspi, nexus 7, and no TV.
yes, it's in there twice because i own it twice

@hbdgaf nice :). Mine: cobbled together desktop (still has a floppy drive from 15 years ago) all sorts of stuff in it, dell 54500 laptop with LMDE, lenovo t450 with Arch, 1st generation iPad, Pi that I don't really use and no TV.

I'm not even going to list all my computers, but one of my favorites (haven't used in a while) is a dual processor Pentium 3 :)

I still swear by that lenovo. It even survived being owned by my ex for a year! Poor baby.
You guys seen this?

Q: Terminal displays nothing, can't log on to account

KsullyTrying to create a new partition for home, I entered this code: sudo cp -Rp /home/* /media/9f5f94b-1296-4e58-bd44-e92ea217f948 Terminal then displayed nothing and now when I log in to my account, I am brought immediately back to the log in screen. How do I fix the problem without reinstallin...

my old desktop was shipped after the hard drive retaining screws and one of the two power supplies were removed. i don't own tech i can't carry on my shoulders.

11:23 PM
@hbdgaf I take it you don't drive then?

no. i don't. even if i did, i wouldn't own tech that didn't fit in a suitcase.
intrinsic lack of trust type of thing.

Fridge? Nah, but I get your point. I've had to lug my desktop from Greece => UK => Spain => France

@terdon lol, the last step on the tutorial he linked is "sudo rm -rf /home_old" that could go terribly wrong...

@terdon the fridge is screwed to the floor. it's not tech, it's a fixture in a camper.

@Mateo oh shit, yeah, that's probably what they did...
@hbdgaf heh, still tech when you're chatting with a pedantic bastard, and you are right now :P

11:26 PM
@terdon but maybe just to home... or worse accidentally put a space after /

@terdon fair enough.

@Mateo Well, the tutorial actually says "Make sure you check that the files are there", which translates to "Don't be a friggin moron!"
Cool! They upgraded the chat flag dialog!
We can actually see the flags before clicking!
FINALLY!

You can only counterflag messages that have been flagged... well then evidently someone was being an asshat ;)

@hbdgaf Yeah, but it used to be horrible, You had no idea where the flag came from or why and actually had to join the source chat room to see it. They must have changed it recently

I just dropped a message in Gaming...

11:30 PM
want to test? I see a message I can flag ;)

in Game Development, 1 min ago, by hbdgaf
Guys, calm down on the flaming and the chat flags. I don't like seeing a thousand flags for marginal statements in an argument. Pick an awful one and flag it or let it go...

About a year ago some idiot flagged a posted picture of a vegetable that looked like a penis. It was a vegetable for crying out loud!
Is this even possible?

Q: What is the best way to install ubuntu on flash drives

user146881I need to install a single version of Ubuntu on 2 usb flash drives, what is the best partitioning scheme to use for this situation? all i want to do on the flash drives are play minecraft, and use for minimal everyday things. the current on i want to use is /dev/sda = / 8gb (My root) /dev/sdb...

@terdon I'm not sure how I would decided on that one depending on context and likeness. Just saying, that's a gray area... I mean, just because it's ACTUALLY A VEGETABLE doesn't mean it does pass the DBAD test.

It was just posted as a joke, not a comment on anyone. It was also obviously a vegetable, no one could mistake it for the real thing.

i couldn't say. i'll just let it go.

11:43 PM
Any ideas on that Q? My guess is that installing the system on two separate drives won't work.
