@JourneymanGeek 1960 here :)

lol
@andrew.46 Oh I've seen @terdon on one of the periodic mod video conferences and elsewhere
and I literally associate terminals with those old glowy green monochrome things... and he's not decrepid old enough for those :D

1:09 AM
hm
"*** The target kernel has CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_ALL enabled, but
*** the signing key cannot be found. Module signing has been
*** disabled for this build."

Thats something I didn't need to figure out the last time >_>
I distinctly remember this working on an older kernel tho but can't remember when it last worked, I set this up, tested it, and moved it over, then decided to update it

6 hours later…
7:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think the SuSE beta was more or less the only ones to ship the kernel before the kernel developers themselves started wondering why NICs were failing left and right

2 hours later…
9:22 AM
@vidarlo yeah, people have been reporting this since 2020 :D

Thats more interesting. Why not fix it before shipping? :)

10:09 AM
apparently its less common hardware
for extra fun I need to sign the driver for it to work, but I can't enroll the key cause this machine apparently was in CSM mode
(in my defence, my routers generally are trouble free and I forgot to check...)
I think the 6x kernels might work better
ah, there's a HWE kernel
lets try living dangerously
at worst I will just need to reinstall the world :D
HAH
@vidarlo good talk :D
the HWE/6.X kernels fixed it on 22.04
now if PAST ME HAD BEEN SMART ENOUGH TO INSTALL THE MODULES TO TEST....
now the irony is, I'm installing an older version of ubuntu on another box... since support for firewire is broken on newer kernels... and I need it to do some archiving

Ohboy. "less common hardware" is always interesting
Remember playing with a Sun Sparcstation and Debian 3 back in the days
and a Alpha 21164 machine
Was a friggin beast.

10:24 AM
@vidarlo intel's older 10 gig cards - really lovely, but these days there's in the wierd place where you can get them almost cheaper than a 2.5 gig card

10G is really cheap
was ordering network switches at work for engineering network four-five years ago. Ended up with 10G backbone because it was essentially same price

lol
for home use its starting to be interesting

yep
Biggest problem is switches
they tend to be noisy, which is often a show stopper for home envs

oh
I've got a flex XG (4 10 gig and 1 1gig, all copper) and some chinese thing 4x 2.5 copper + 2x 10 gig SFP+

And for me - I don't see the need either... 1GbE is enough for now

10:28 AM
my router's some SFF/passive machine that does 2 10 gig (SFP+), 5 2.5 gig (copper) and 2 gigabit (SFP!!!)

thats nice

lol. I don't have any practical purpose. it just happened to be cheaper when I was planning on building my network (and I had some money I had to spend on tech stuff from work) to get the XG

mm
I tend to go cheap :P
don't want to spend a lot of money on it

uhh
the chinese switch's about 50-70
router's ~300 but my last router's hitting about 5 years with up to date software so, it'll last forever (which is actually a problem since I need to remember how to build these things), as was the flex xg
oh and if you shop around PCIe x8 (will work in x4 for one port) cards are ~20ish
I think switch prices are almost at the point where they'll drop
(also I love the fact that I was trying to build and sign my own kernel modules, when the solution was a oneliner)

10:56 AM
Hehe
yeah... just that I tend to stick to whatever I can scoop up used

lol
which is why they're loud
and the 'used' market here is non existant ._.

Q: network UNCLAIMED with new net card (22.04.1)

millercentralI installed a new Intel X540 10g network card in my Ubuntu 22.04.1 pc, but I'm struggling to get it working (built in 1gbps ethernet ports are working). lshw shows network UNCLAIMED - anyone have any insights on what I did wrong or what I can do to get it going? Details below, thanks! lshw -clas...

someone had the same issue in 2022 ._.
so at least 2 years

11:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek "Used" from employer and such ;P

1 hour later…
12:52 PM
Can someone cheer me a little bit up?

@nobody what's wrong?

1:16 PM
